  • Welcome to our TH-cam channel! My name is Violet and my SDiT is Atlas- at the time that this video was recorded he is a year and 7 months old golden retriever. This is part 2 of a mini series documenting how I’m preparing my service dog to go to universal studios in Orlando, FL for the first time! In this video we go run errands, do some wheelchair training, and more to prepare for our upcoming trip! Come along to see how Atlas does!

Service dogs and miniature horses are the only animals permitted under the ADA to go to public places with their handler to mitigate their disability. Please do not bring your pets into non-pet friendly places. Please do not fake a service dog- this is illegal as well. Remember you’re not just faking a service dog, you’re faking having a disability. Penalty can range anywhere from a fine, misdemeanor, or even a felony depending on state laws for bringing pets to non-pet friendly places, for faking a service dog, and for distracting a service dog.
Service dogs are specifically task trained to help mitigate their handlers disability. This can take years of intense training! Please do not distract a service dog or a service dog in training as it is vital for the safety of their handler!
    Thank you for watching!!✨🦮

I just wanna say how awesome it is seeing how far you both come. I watched your video about how long it took you to get Atlis and Several of your beginning training videos through until now all the progress you both made is amazing and makes me inspired am I training with my own service dog. You’re one of the most most authentic and real handlers I found here on TH-cam. Hope you and atlas both had a great universal trip and I can’t wait to watch that blog

Awww thank you so so much!! That means more than you know!! I really try to keep things as real as possible to help others and so no one feels alone so it really means the world to hear that that is showing through! It’s also really hard to see the progress we’ve made so to hear it from others who have watched our journey really helps and it means the world to hear that too. Thank you so much for being a long time supporter and watching our content 🥹❤️✨🐾❤️✨😭

I really appreciated you incorporating the wheelchair part. I was just wondering how young you started teaching him to walk beside your wheelchair. My 13-week-old SD Prospect (German Shepherd/Husky mix rescue expected to be 90 lbs fully-grown) is still learning to heel properly with a standing person (my mom). But since I’m an amputee who spends most of their time in a wheelchair, I’d love some tips if you have any. Thanks!

Aw thank you so much! I didn’t start wheelchair training until he was about 1 when I knew his heeling had been solid without a wheelchair for quite a while! Training looks different for everyone, but taking thinks literally step by step with learning how to heel really helped Atlas❤️

@@helperpupatlas7377 I would give anything to be able to walk and establish a solid heel that way first, but that’s not a possibility right now. Hopefully once I’m back in my prosthetic leg and have re-learned how to walk after being out of it since October due to two major surgeries and then falling and breaking my femur/hip 2 months ago. I’m just super grateful that my mom is working on that standing heel for now 👍🏻🐾🐾

@@thewilltowalk6651 that’s completely understandable and completely okay! Training is going to look different for everyone! If you feel starting to train your pup next to your wheelchair now is what’s best for you right now then I say go for it! I’m not a professional and I can only really say what I’ve done/would do in a training scenarios! Maybe using a food lure to help get your pup into position and take one step while luring while your in the wheelchair could help! Also heeling next to wall can help train them to walk straight with you. I’m sorry if I wasn’t much help, but know that just cause training looks different for you and your pup doesn’t mean that you guys aren’t doing amazing or on the right track! You got this! ✨🦮🐾

@@helperpupatlas7377 I really appreciate your response ❤️ I think I’m gonna try out creating a “heel box” so that she know to face forward when we heel. She has been ignoring food on outings and preferring praise, but I introduced her to peanut butter yesterday and JACKPOT!! So I’m hoping to get to Lowe’s today to try walking and if she checks in at least a little because she is doing decent on the leash but interested in the sights and sound of the store (which is understandable for only 15 weeks. I’m also thinking it will help with distracting her from my other dog going bonkers with excitement (barking, howling, jumping) when he sees a dog or person when looking out our bay window. I was in tears worrying that he was ruining Remi because he has made her cautious of visitors and started to join in the chaos, but I was reassured by a trainer that fixing this behavior in my other dog will make Remi change back because she is just feeding off of his energy and mimicking his behavior.

Hi. I love all your videos. I have two Q’s for you. Feel free not to answer them if they are to personal for you. I am looking into getting either a lab or a golden d from a breeder. I want one that has some working line drives to it possibly. Would you feel comfortable sharing with me what breeder you got Atlas from? I am just trying to build a repertoire of good breeders. Also how do you make sure Atlas is safe and comfortable when you trim his fur? If I did get a golden I don’t think I would be able to afford taking it to the groomer regularly to get that done but would prefer doing it at home after baths, brushing, and nail trimmings. Any tips are welcome. Thank you.

Hi! Thank you so much for watching our videos, it means more than you know!! When grooming Atlas I started pretty much from the moment I got him- I slowly desensitized him to the tools I had to use so scissors, brushes, nail Dremel, ear cleaner, etc. Basically what that looked like to start with was using a clicker and marking and rewarding for any contact/interest in these objects. Once he was comfortable around them and interacting with them on his own I would lift these objects and touch them to a point on his body- ears, paws, etc. and click and reward. Once he seemed comfortable with that we started to turn on (in the case of the nail file turn on and touch the non-filing side to his paw) and touch those things to his body before slowly actually using those things. If he seemed uncomfortable after the first couple of clips(scissors) or uses of the dremel I would stop what I’m doing and do something fun instead like playing with a toy. But when I would use these tools on him I would always mark and reward for any amount of time that I could use those things on him, no matter how small. Now that he’s used to these things it looks a little different- I don’t have to mark and reward for every pass of a dremel or scissors. But I do always stop and take a break if he needs it. I have a video about cooperative care that shows what that looks like now for us! I hope this helps! I too can’t afford a groomer, but I enjoy doing it myself. So it’s definitely something to think about when getting a golden. ❤️

I also want to add that I groom him myself not only cause of financial reasons, but mostly cause I don’t trust anyone else to handle him. The only people I trust to leave Atlas with are his breeder and my boyfriend. I’ve just heard and seen too many horror stories and a service dogs career is such a fragile thing that it could only take one bad experience to ruin their career!

@@helperpupatlas7377 I bet. Service dogs are so important and it would be hard to leave them with someone who might be inexperienced with dogs or not give him a good experience
