    Very nice cutaway. I think you dealt with the problem well. You tried to remedy the situation, and when you found that the problem got worse, you acted quickly and executed your EP's in a quick, stable manner. You were on the ball and aware throughout. It's very easy to sit here as an armchair skydiver and tell you 'everything you could have done better' but I applaud you for being calm and dealing with the malfunction well. I think this video is a good example to show to other skydivers.

    • @tfairborne501
      @tfairborne501 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree completely.. from the moment it came out of the bag it was an apparent cutaway. It was packed wrong. There was nothing able to be done about it. Grabbing the crossed over line was worthless and also put the jumper into a hard spin by pulling the risers together.
      It didn't have to be su h an ugly cutaway.
      I guess your slower version of seeing things makes it seem nice to you. Get more than. 300 jumps and a few years in the sport.....or better yet be a pro since 2000...I just might see more than the normal pull and pray jumper.
      That is my assessment after watching it once. Should of went for handles right away. Fixing a step through in the air isn't working unless he was gonna cut that line

    Thanks for the comment. I think that since I had the same exact malfunction on my first chop I knew what to expect. I aslo learned that handles are expensive and not to throw them this time. Chops are not fun and can be scary but at the same time I think that your training definitely takes over

  • @devinm170

    It was just bad packing on my part. My left brake went over my canopy and on to the other side. More than likely this happens when you land and can sometimes get tangled up in the lines. Its an easy to fix and easy to spot malfunction, at the time i did not really know how to spot this type of problem. If you do get your AFF you will spend plenty of time learning about malfunctions also i recommend taking a packing course (something i never did but should have)

  • @ernietorres2940
    @ernietorres2940 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A lot of times it is a question of your packing habits. It's more operator error than equipment failure. When you get in a hurry and pack sloppy, it's more likely to happen. You are correct in that if the reserve didn't function properly, it would not have ended happily.

    I borrowed a rig (= borrowed pack job) and opened up with this same line issue. Your natural reaction is always to pull it down to see if anything can be done. Mine was a little more stable but I didn't like how it was flying and we had some turbulent winds on the ground that day say I decided to chop it. Trust your reserve.

  • @devinm170
    @devinm170  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I see discussion on cutaway and altitude etc. Minor malfunctions maintain to be so untill the point of 2000 ft. Any malfunction under 2000 ft. Like, a twist without spin for example. There are exceptions though. If for some reason your toggles don't react aswell as they normally do but your canopy is fully deployed with no spinning, or twisting, then there is no risk for any problems below 2000 ft, except maybe a comfortable landing. And may it be the case you have a big malfunction and you check your altimeter and for some reason you are below 1000ft. No more cut away, just pull the reserve along.
    This is what I learned in ground school.

    as an older skydiver, i have to say, rounds left little doubt about when to cut away. (mae wests even) I see so many videos of square cutaways (i jumped early squares and triangles but they always opened, albeit trashy) that I would have to have training to know this should be cut away. the idea of a square reserve was coming into vogue as i left the sport and seemed such an anathema to us that even now it freaks me out.

    Just go to your local drop zone and talk with them when you turn 18. They will provide everything you need to get certified. look online at your local dropzones website and they will have more info on prices for classes. look under AFF. I paid $1400 to get all the classes and coaching (3 tandems, 5 coaching solos and all the ground school). It's expensive at first but gets cheaper later on. also check out Dropzone.com

      Usually about 1 second. The reserve takes a couple of seconds to fully deploy and inflate, as you can see in the video. Some situations result in a longer time between cutaway and reserve deployment, if the jumper wants more separation.

    • @davidwang5770
      @davidwang5770 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      cupcakefreak11 No in the video you can see the line tangled is becoming downplane which will cause you to spin in the air.. low speed becomes high speed malfunction. So the right thing to do is to immediately cut-away and deploy your reserve

  • @Xarathos
    @Xarathos 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The hell with that shit... Cut away, open your reserve... Have it repacked, and you're jumping again in no time...
    Of course that if you use F111, 7 cell canopies, precision or big canopies, you can safely do a PLF if it's flying leveled... But you're risking yourself of having a sprained ankle, or even risk breaking a few bones on most canopies in a normal wing load...
    Should you hit the ground hard enough to sprain your ankle... You would've thought 'Why didn't I cut away and safely land my reserve...' for a few weeks of being grounded...
    Machos who don't cut away aren't better than someone who sees a malfunction and cuts away in no time...

    • @Xarathos
      @Xarathos 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Dekowski yes indeed. honestly, i had to view the video again and read my previous comment. I forgot about it.
      I don't know if I was replying to someone else's comment. Now, regarding to the video... I would've chopped it sooner. You can see from the begging that you're not going to be able to fix it.
      Cheers!

  • @joslinnick

    • @thomasbrown4291

      That depends. If it's not opening, looks bad or is spinning, just chop it. If it's stable, then look at your altimeter. If you're above two grand you have a little time to mess with it. But if you're down to two grand, chop it.

    This is clearly a packing error. I am surprised that this is not something you have been teached...if this is the case then this is a grave mistake from your instructors...

    I've seen a brake line step through landed. (at SNE last month) Chopping it is probably a better Idea.

    Hmm, how common is this? I thought it was very unlikely to happen, but i've seen it in quite a lot of videos.
    How scary is this? I mean you consider your self lucky or it's a thing that happens to pretty much every skydiver at least once. It seems to me that if the 2nd canopy would not have opened, you would have crashed...

    • @thomasbrown4291
      @thomasbrown4291 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a completely preventable malfunction. All you have to do is run a line check with the four outside lines on the canopy. You should also be able to run the slider up & down the lines. That's all it takes, whether you or someone else does the packing. But do it yourself first ; do your line check, set your brakes, make sure your slider's open and cock your pilot chute. Every time.

    dochayes1 = My Point Exactly!!!
    If he hadn't messed with his slider, and lines his canopy would have been safe to land as was. For all you new, young skydivers... I learned to jump as a student without an RSL or AAD!!! Rule of malfunctions... Better to land with what you got than what you haven't got. (That refers to lo pulls mainly).
    Nevertheless, people cut away today for too many paranoid reasons, like line twists!!!
    For everyone out there, Including Performance Designs.......... Stowing Brakes IS NOT, for Soft openings!!!!! Stowing Brakes are for 2 reasons! And neither has to do with causing or preventing malfunctions at deployment.
    1) = In case a skydiver opens face-to-face with another jumper, at half brakes she has more time to pull the right riser to avoid a collision.
    2) if the jumper opens unconsciousness or with line twists = cannot steer the canopy! Then the canopy AT LEAST flies at 1/2 velocity, given zero winds... So the jumper can land safely with a PLF!
    At this Jumper's Video in question: What I was stating is: That if he had simply left the Canopy as was, he could have landed it safely with a PLF!!!!
    Are all of you who keep replying to my advice, that naive or obtuse actually believe that No One has ever died from a Cut-Away???? or from a Reserve Malfunction????
    News Flash commenter's! Nothing in Skydiving or Life guarantees absolutely Safety! Especially a Reserve Canopy!
    I have been in the sport for 31 years now! And have only ever gotten injured from Skydiving at TSC in Japan twice (on my knees and pelvis / hip ) due to avoiding immature and in-properly trained Japanese skydivers, who frequently make bad decisions such as Gauntlets and panic attacks at final, causing me to veer off and hard landing to avoid a life threatening injury for both of us.
    However, with regards to Malfunctions.... I only have had 1 cut away, without a Steven's Lanyard, (RSL) in 1989 due to an FXC Fire and double deployment with Round Phantom Reserve!!!
    All other Malfunctions, including ruptured steering lines, I have never gotten injured at landing nor freaked out and went right away into a cut away!!!
    Also, the ONLY PURPOSE of All Canopies is to: Provide Drag to slow down your descent and soften your landing! That's all.
    In this Video, His Canopy, was Providing Drag, Lift, 1/2 Brakes, And Was Fully Deployed and Flying Straight!
    For all You "instant cut away supporters" who don't believe me: Try Joining the US Army Airborne Infantry!!! There they all Jump with the SAME SIZE CANOPIES, regardless of Body Weight, and Carry at least an extra 160 pounds worth of Gear.... And guess what? They cannot Steer or Swoop, Slow-down or land their canopies softly, and Always land at an Angle, mostly sideways or backwards!!!! Especially the F1-11 Dash 1, and T-10 Canopies, that I jumped for almost 20 years!!!!
    PLF's Can save lives!!!!
    Try it some time!!!!
    Safety overrides your pride! And it's always better to land, with grass and dirt stains on your gear, than blood stains!!!
    Golden Knights!
