I played that amp mayby 10 years ago in a music shop in Hamburg, Germany and man was this a beast! I think Randall really naild the core for what they are famous for in terms of heavy metal sounds in this amp. And I personally love the esthetics of this head to.
Nice review and nice Riffs to ✌️✌️✌️
Thank you so much for the kind words @Fight4Madness! Agreed absolutely sic head and looks killer, one on my fave lookin amps of all time!
I love Dave Linsk’s tone on Ironbound by Overkill with this head. Gloriously heavy! Keep up the awesome content man!
Awesome demo! I dig the super precise gain character of channel 2 on this amp. Those mids are unmistakable. Pretty cool that Overkill used a hybrid for a while, would explain that unique crunchy and air tight tone.
That massive power section addresses many of the issues people have with solid state power sections in general starting to sound unpleasant when pushed to higher volumes. The aim was to create much more headroom for a solid state setting to mimic the “pleasantness” of a tube power section while the preamp did the rest. Very uniquely dry and tight amp.
You nailed it!
dude the solid state preamp tone is awesome!
i truly miss this amp, a bandmate had it and let me dile in his tones, fantastic stuff
That riff was simply awesome. Another great video. Thanks
Thank you so much for the kind word Chagas!
I owned two of them and yes, they are amazing. Especially through the old school Randall Jaguar 412 cabinets or the original PV triple X cabs. There’s only one negative. Almost no amp tech wants to work on them because after looking at the schematics, they all look like, they just found 100 dead bodies and call it a nightmare. That was my experience and I talked to at least a half dozen renowned amp techs; from NYC to Miami. No dice.
Sounds amazing 👊💥 Very defined, crispy clear chugging.
Nice Review Eric, Awesome playing as always to! This may be worth looking into if you can find a nice Clean one at a decent price, it has some good features. I still have my Original 80's Randall Mini Stack! I may need to get this to play around with to.
Hey Johnny Romero, thank you so much you are too kind. Absolutely I recommend one of these if you can find a clean one for good price, it is a pretty dang fun amp to play through and man when you decide to krank it up, it get with the program but in a different way than a tube amp. I prefer tubes when kranked but this is a cool alternative
This and the T2 were my dream amps as a teenager. No idea what I'd have done with a 400 watt half stack, but I was sure I needed one.
You still do!!
I must find this weapon. Awesome vid even more awesome playing! Subbed👊
Thank you so much @Philipmentzingenart! It is an amazing amp for sure!
I've always wanted a V2 and the T2 - killer amps!!!
wow that sounds ridiculously good.
Sic amp @AkiraSpectrum! Thanks for watching and responding!
I've got the T2, pretty darn good amp but I'd love to come across a V2 for a good price!
Heck Yes, the T2 is another killer amp! They are out there hope you kind one!
Great review, Eric!
Thank you so much for the kind words @kingmafw!
I definitely hear the arch enemy sound of the 2010s
Sounds great man
My first amp, damn i actually miss it..
Really great playing, and awesome tone.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Love mine too. What cabs did you find paired best (besides the matching cab) ? I’ve often wondered with that huge power section.
Hey @davepigram9928, IMHO I favor stock Marshall 1960B cabs. Years ago I used a Marshall 1960B for a long time, live and in the studio then moved to a Legacy 4x12 with vintage 30s. Recently I did enjoyed playing this amp through my Mesa Boogie 2x12 for studio use. My personal fave though, Marshall 4x12 with the G12T-75s. How about you?
I’ve never tried it with a Mesa cab but I agree that the best sound I’ve had was through a 1960A cab.
Lol. Didn't expect you to have such crushing riffs. Never judge a book by its cover.
So glad to have you check out the video @severmore-qh3tp, and hope you will stay for many more!
Great riffs and review, Eric! This amp rips for sure! Did you have any problems like overheating while using this amp with your loadbox? I was skeptical about the 400 watt power section and did not try to connect it to my loadbox.
Thank you so much @DeathMetalManiac1988! Heck yes this is an amazing amp! No issues with overheating using with the Two Notes Captor X, IMHO this amp can run for days. I have heard some fans are louder than others and have heard about fan replacements but I never experienced any issues. What loadbox do you have?
@@X9Eric Cool, this sounds good. Then I have to try to connect my V2 to my loadbox. I use the React:IR by St. Rock if you heard about it - it's similar to the Two Notes Torpedo Live.
I own both t2 and v2.. They're great but most people don't know how to use them right.. throw a boss gx700 in front of it ;)
I want to mention only one thing.
The v2 and t2 and some other Randalls designed by THE GURU OF TONE BRUCE EGNATER.
That's why it has all these things.
I have 2 of the Archetype models. Love when they work but can't find anyone to fix the issues.
Oh no @DavinTilley sorry to hear that! This is my third V2 and the other two I bought brand new and worked perfect through gigging and recording. This one I bought used and came with a problem.. It loses volume on channel 3 (the tube channel) randomly. Always wanted to check out the Archetype to see if there are any differences. I would have rather bought the Archetype all three times but they are SUPER rare. Ever compared to a regular V2?
A guy is selling this top used in good condition for 500$. I play a lot of metal like Pantera but also music like Iron Maiden. I am a fairly new guitar player but I play a lot. I am also playing in band with friends and this amp would be stationed in the rehearsal room.
Firstly is it worth 500$ in good condition and secondly is it too much for someone that has played for a year but plays very actively. I will play smaller shows further down the line and there seems to be no shortage of watts anyways I know nothing about Randall since there is no store selling them in my country, but from what I can tell by this video this amp seems like a steal for 500$?
It sounds very much like Dimebags sound in the video, I really hope I can dial in something to play more of an Iron Maiden sound as well.
Nope, I'd buy it for that @mathias6423! Gid e up and enjoy as it seriously rocks!!!
May i ask how you recorded the amp? Did you go out from the 400W into the captor? Or did you go direct from the pre? Isnt it problematic to usw the captor with the poweramp bcs the captor is only capable of 100W or is it different with solid state poweramps? I cant find anything regarding this topic on the forums. I have the v2 as well and im not sure if i can usw it from the poweramp out with the driftwood loadbox. Thanks mate
Hey @raymondtash, I ran the Randall speaker out into the TwoNotes Captor X, from the Cap X into my audio interface. Does not matter if the amp is tube or Solid State just make sure you are using the correct ohm Cap X, mine is an 8 ohm.
Not familiar with Driftwood loadbox, sorry
Hey thanks for the quick reply; Yeah but the captor x can only handle 100W while the v2 has 400W! Isnt this problematic?
Yeah these things positively kill... I love mine, I'm never going to sell it.
If you liked this amp, you are too easily impressed. I was an early buyer of the V2 and it couldn't hang with anything else in my amp room. Literally everything else was better.
didn't just like it, loved it!
does it sound better than the Evh III ...i do doubt it but will listen to the video.
to my ears, isnt better but the EQ is something I wish All amps had. Onboard EQ
IMHO no. But I would use the two amps differently and each provide killer tones maybe in different ways. Please check out some of my videos on the EVH to compare them. Let me know what you think, thanks
I just picked up the T2 because I couldn’t find a decent V2. Am I missing out on anything besides the extra channel and EQ?
Hey @txc123! I hear you they are rare and hard to find! The EQ on the V2 is a MAJOR component of this amps sound IMHO. Though you could achieve the same thing by adding an MXR ten band EQ pedal! Otherwise the T2's rip as well! Happy riffing!!!
have any reliiability issues? any repairs? heard theyre a pain to take apart and repair.
Have owned 3 @they_arent_human. 2 were bought brand new and no issues with tons of gigging and studio use. This 1 was bought used and it had an unresolved issue on channel 3. Killer amps, IMHO. Hope that helps,
@@X9Eric still unresolved? Can get one used. Looks a little dirty/rough. Listed as great condition on GC. It may just need a cleaning though. Just dont want to buy it and have to do a major repair or anything. Says it's fully working. Think I should spring for it? I have a usa 6505+, egnster armageddon, 333xl infinitum, and evh stealth 100. I love vh140c and dimebag etc. Thinking the randall would be a good addition.
Kinda like a Marshall Valvestate 8100, except the Randall has 400 watts!
Exactly. 400 WATTS... This thing is just flipping nuts!
Can you share your settings please?
Hey @shredev, they are in the video!
Why the hell did they discontinue this amp?
Agreed!
Because when I compared them to my ultralead, Herbert or modded Marshall's, the V2 sucked balls. And my Randall X2 heads smoked it. It was a shitty amp.
Do you use a loadbox of ir loader?
Yes, Two Notes Captor X
Jesus Christ is Lord and King of kings.
Pantera lmfao worst tone ever
LOL, it used to be THE tone everybody wanted. Time marches on that's for sure
Lol arch enemy..NOT metal
they're not metal?
Jesus Christ is Lord and savior. King of kings. Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that he is Lord. Praise you Father God and Lord Jesus.
Sir, this is Wendy’s.
