    An EXCELLENT deodorizing for washable items is to use WHITE VINEGAR solution, maybe 1/4 cup per gallon water to start (you could always increase the ratio if doesn't work); polyurethane coated material is notorious for smell after years, but this restored my tents & rainwear.
    BTW, Our paths crossed at Pine Grove Furnace S.P. You sat at my table in front of the ice cream general store; I was not familiar with your channel/notoriety. But have since followed along. I must say thank you for the episode just exiting N.H. into Maine where you mentioned passing "New Shoes" and then stated his channel "Trailhead Justin." He had remarked about my enthusiasm in one of his vids when he passed me in lower PA. I was stunned to hear my name being referenced! I wanted to see his progress but had no luck since the trail handle & YT name were different.
    El Camino de Santigo is also in my plans this fall, same time frame. Knee replacement is May, tho.
    iBUEN CAMINO!

    Thanks for the clothing video, Jay. You're a great explainer.

    Thanks for your information and help for many of us. It was your suggestion that I used along the trail, which was to put my puffy on top of myself, outside my liner but inside my sleeping bag for an extra layer of warmth. It did the trick every time.

    To avoid blisters on my feet I wear compression socks with boot socks over them now. Back in the 1970’s I wore cotton socks with wool boot socks over them. I am a Type 1 Diabetic since age 6 so am very careful with my feet. The socks rub against each other rather than my skin rubbing against the sock and shoe

    I showed up at Melanzana without an appointment, asked if there were any cancellations that day and the gentleman welcomed me in. It’s worth a try if you find yourself in Leadville.

    Burgeon Outdoors out of New Hampshire makes an equivalent fleece. I have one of each and they're comparable, just slight differences in style of the neck area. You can buy Burgeon online.

    Hey Jay, thanks for the update. There are plenty of "here is my thru hike kit list videos out there" but much less "here is how my gear did on the Thru Hike" so valuable information!

      @dodge_walks ปีที่แล้ว

      Also unless I've missed it, how did your footwear hold out? I ask as I wear the same model of Asics that I think you started in.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shoes worked out well! 4 pairs used and 5 pairs of insoles. I've worn the same model for all my long hikes now so they've always been pretty reliable so far. I get 500-700 miles out of them based on terrain.

    I walked away for a bit and now I'm trying to find the one thing I meant to watch. Makes you realize why YT added the chapters capability, haha! oops!
    Thanks for another great video!

    I got one of the kerchiefs after watching your videos and love it. I use it like an adjustable buff. Being able to use it as a headscarf when the wind gets up makes it incredibly versatile.

      When I flipped through videos for clips for these videos I was wearing my kerchief all the time. I'm planning on bringing them on my backpacking trips this year as well.

      When Jay did his pre-trail gear lists and introduced the Shimog (spelling 😂) I thought “great, I have a connection to pick one up in Bahrain” So, I placed my request 😮😮 The Chief (a Middle Eastern Linguist that studies the culture) said …”Mommmm, NO!! That’s very disrespectful for YOU to wear one…” oops. She sent me a few “culturally appropriate” options. They’re nice, though. I’m not sure how I feel about taking them to the woods 😂😂

    Jay, Please consider soaking your clothes with vinegar in a cold water wash. It will remove almost all odors and musty smells on your well selected hiking clothing.

    If you add a small amount of ammonia to your normal detergent wash, it will remove the smell from your sweated in/smelly clothes.

    I remember when you were wearing your moss green fleece and pondered if you fell off the side of the trail, got knocked out, and ended up next to the mossy logs at the bottom if anyone would see a person lying there and not another moss covered log. LMAO!

    The kerchief - I think that’s North x North? They shut down last year. I’ve been looking everywhere for one (after seeing it in your videos) but just can’t find it or something similar anywhere 😢

    Did you wear a liner sock inside your waterproof socks? This was a very good recap; very useful for hikers. Thanks.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yes, I wore the Injinji liners. They don't last long so I had 2 pairs of liners while I had the waterproof socks.

    Hi Jay. Love your videos! Curious if you used a gps unit on your hikes for emergency communications. Thanks!

      Yes, I had an inReach Mini 2. I like it for its tracking.

    You might want to change the link for the Shemagh to one that points to a product sold by Varusteleka that a 43” square Merino wool scarf, basically. They also sell Shemaghs. The link you have is dead as that company went out of business, apparently.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I had no idea about that company but that's pretty good people can still get it somewhere. It seems about the same. I may get a green one while it's available!

    It seems like A LOT of people have long underwear on the trail but you didn’t find that you needed that? You were warm enough with yours shorts and long Columbia pants?

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, didn't need long underwear. I usually slept in my running shorts and even in the coldest nights I always removed the leg bottoms every night because they were usually dirty. My legs and feet run warmer though.

    Jay - Great videos/content - Followed you from beginning to end on the Appalachian Trail. Question about the Injinji socks: Did you see any significant performance difference in the lighter weight Injinji socks, and do you still prefer the mid weight trail socks, even though they didn't dry? I love my mid-weight but also wondering if the lighter weight would be better for warmer months. Thanks

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed the same benefits with the slightly thinner ones but I enjoyed the additional cushion of the hiker thickness socks better. They also feel softer overall so they felt better. I've worn the same hiker socks throughout the PCT and AZT and felt they weren't too hot either and I have hot feet.

    What shoes did you wear?

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have extra wide feet so wear the Asics Venture 6 with Superfeet Green wide insoles. It's been my shoes for all of my hikes so far. On the AT I wore 4 out and threw it out after the end.

    Not sure why Melanzana can't sell stock online like other grid fleece vendors who aren't huge operations. (Fayettechill. Lightheart Gear, Burgeon Outdoor, etc)
    I'm not paying $250 to Colorado scalpers on ebay for a $79 grid fleece hoody. I'll pay the $99 to Judy at Lightheartgear for basically the same style of hoody.
    To me, it's just a status symbol thing. "Ewww, we are exclusive." 😜

      They really needed to go. I didn't show any pictures of the liner inside the shorts but they were basically more holey than netting. Pretty bad.
