Bimbisara and Prasenjit used marriage alliances to strengthen their political position.
Bimbisara and Prasenjit both had married other parties sisters with mutual consent.
What we have to learn from these two is to understand their strategy of expansion as a overall picture.

INTRODUCTION
Bimbisara belonged to the Haryanka dynasty.he ruled from 546bc -494bc.Geographically, the kingdom of Magadha had many advantages, especially in military terms.However,Magadha was not strong enough to conquer heavyweights like Koshala and Vaishali.. So, Bimbisara entered into matrimonial alliances with Koshala and Vaishali.
KOSALA- His first matrimonial alliance was with the ruling family of Kosala. He married Kosaladevi, sister of Prasenajit. He was given the Kasi region as dowry which yielded large revenue.
VAISALI- Bimbisara married Chellana, a princess of the Licchavi
family of Vaisali. This matrimonial alliance secured for him the safety
of the northern frontier. Moreover, it facilitated the expansion of
Magadha northwards to the borders of Nepal.
CENTRAL PUNJAB-He also married Khema of the royal house of Madra in central Punjab.
Ajatashatru who was a successor of Bimbisara, used both strategy and military means to affect his opponents. The war with Koshala began after Prasenajit took hold of Kashi and stopped its revenues from getting to Magadha. The loss of revenue , made Ajatashatru prepare for a reply on the battlefield.. From each side , with the war not coming to any conclusion for an extended time, but ultimately, Magadha prevailed. Prasenajit returned Kashi and offered his daughter in marriage to the conqueror.
CONCLUSION
Thus from above point we can conclude that matrimonial alliance was used as a means of teritorial expansion and safety not only during mahajanpada bt also at later times

The Buddist literature Anguttara Nikaya gives a sixteen kingdoms called "Sixteen Mahajanapadas". Among them,in the mid 6th century BC only four kingdoms___Vatsa, Avanti,Kosala and Magadha survived.
1. Matrimonial alliances with other parties daughter or sister was a step towards expanding their power and also to strengthen their political parties.
2. Udayana, the ruler of Vatsa entered into matrimonial relationship with Avanti, Kosala and Magadha.
3. Pradyota, the ruler of Avanti married Vasavadatta,the daughter of Udayana.
4. The ruler of Kosala, king Prasenajit,he also entered into matrimonial relationship with Magadha. His sister Kosaladevi was married with Bimbisara, who was a Magadhyan empire. And to settle down a dispute, Prasenajit married to the daughter of Bimbisara.
5. Bimbisara: (a) He had 3 wives. His first wife was the daughter of the king Koshala. The bride bought Kashi village yielding a revenue of 100,000 as dowry.
(b) His second wife, Chellana, was a licchhavi princess who gave birth to Ajatshatru.
(c) His third wife was the daughter of the chief of the Madra clan of Punjab.
(d) Marriage relations with the different princely families lent enormous diplomatic prestige and paved the way for the expansion of Magadha into westerd and northward.
The benefits of matrimonial alliances are that they gain support from their wive's kingdom. This secured a military support from them at times of wars or battles as well as reduced the risks of attacks from that region. Later, if the daughter or sister was only the successor,there are chances that the kingdom or a part passes over to the groom.

They are saying that Prasenajit's sister married with Bimbisara and then Prasenajit married the daughter of Bimbisara...

Thank you for the Class Sir. I have a doubt regarding the Alexander Invasion. In Ancient History by R.S.Sharma, the author says that Alexander invaded India during the reign of Mahapadma Nanda and Alexander did not 'dare' to move towards the east because of that. Sir, Could you please clarify on this point ? Is it important to have a clarification here or should we just understand that it happened during the reign of Nanda Dynasty ? Sir, also how to approach the questions when questions are asked from areas where different authors have different opinions ?

Please know that most of the governments were Monarchical in Gangetic Plains.
Magadha & 3 others which we have discussed in details were also Monarchical.
Republics were just scattered around the foothills of Himalayas and Northwestern India.
