The EV manufacturers (other than Tesla), need to see how important this it is to get this under control. Thanks for keeping us informed as to what you are finding.
Your content is awesome. Doing the work so we don’t have to. Honestly, this is why I can’t leave Tesla. I have seen so many horror stories with EA, it puts me off from trying other vehicles I really want. I hope things get better down the line, but for now I’ll stick to Tesla just for the supercharger network.
One thing that’s worth trying, along with calling EA, is using the other cable. About half the time switching to the “wrong” cable makes it work with my Bolt. Not sure if it works with other EVs. I think it puts some torque on the connection to make better contact.
Thanks for sharing these videos, I’m taking our Lightning from South central Kentucky to Orlando in a month and after 2 months of owning the truck I am super happy and impressed with its capabilities.. However, I am now SOOOO weary of EA chargers that I’m a little less confident in making the trip without issues. At this point my strategy will likely be stop at any fast charger available every 2 hours to ensure plenty of buffer in case an ENTIRE charging station fails to provide a charge.
Love your videos, guys! Very helpful. I'm wondering, however, why you haven't called the EA help number. When I've had problems charging, I call them and they are invariably helpful and can usually solve my problem. There's a lot of stuff they can do remotely to fix a charger problem.
@@AUav8r05 I've done a fair amount of long road trips in my ID4 to and from Minnesota from California, using Electrify America exclusively. 80% of the time, the chargers have worked flawlessly. Most of the rest involved switching from one charger to another once or twice. Only twice have I had to call EA for help, and once that was only because I didn't have a cell signal to my phone, making activation of free charging impossible. So, calling for help has not been a frequent issue, but it's nice to have when you need it.
@@rickdibello3823 that’s good to hear. I’d love for EA to succeed or any other third party. In my limited road trips with Tesla, I’ve never had an issue. Hopefully others can match or exceed this charging reliability.
The TFL guys had this issue also. It really doesn't matter how fast it charges if you spend that much time just getting it to work. This is going to be a big problem and it HAS to get fixed or Tesla is going to be the only vehicle folks will be willing to travel with.
I had the same issue with EA 350KW charger on Aug 20 in NC.. It was the exact same charger I used on Aug13 with my Rivian. The 150KW worked fine. Someone else called in to EA to get it to work while I was sitting there. Wondering if EA had a mass issue with the 350KW chargers that day.
I have to hold up on the back of the charge handle while the circle spins to get an EA station to charge my Chevy Bolt EV. Let go when the charge actually begins. Here's the reason. The charge can't start until the locking pawl comes down to hold the charge handle in place. The heavy cable tilts the handle down and prevents the lock from fully engaging. Still have to try two or three units to find one that works.
I wondered if this could have been their issue while watching this video, I’ve seen Kyle Konner on Out of Spec have to hold up on the handle of the DC fast charger to initiate a charge
Watching your videos along with other ones like it re-assure me that buying a Tesla was the right thing to do. I will keep my gas powered Chevrolet Traverse for road trips and towing.
Having both a Mach-e and a Model 3 I have had issues with charging on both vehicles. I have found that the charging stations themselves are usually at fault. I have experienced an entire Tesla supercharger station suddenly go offline. Another time where my charge (@ 40%) started at 98KW only to drop a minute later to 34KW and continue decreasing all the way down to 12KW over a span of two minutes, I moved over to another charger but got the same results. Other Tesla owners were also experiencing the same issue at this particular station (it was eventually fixed). With the Mach-e I tend to avoid the 350KW chargers because they tend to fail to charge often. I find the 150KW far more reliable, especially if I start the charge on a 150KW charger. If I start with a 350KW charger, because the 150KW is not available, I found that if it fails to start charging on the 350KW it’s almost a guarantee that it’ll fail on 150KW unless I let it sit for a least 5 minutes before trying to charge again. Having said that, I will agree that the Tesla chargers are more reliable than the CCS ones.
Yeah the husband is making a repeated mistake of calling the power of the chargers 🔌 in kWh and not kW. I hope he corrects himself in the following videos. I understand this is new tech to all of us. Much love from South Africa🇿🇦.
Suggestion: if your Frunk is empty, open it to cut the glare on the screen when recording. Did the station cooling start? If the cables get to hot, they will throttle back the current. You might also try the Tesla trick and put a damp cloth over the connector.
I agree on the auto makers working with the charging station companies to make sure everything works the problem is they currently have no need to lift a finger because they're selling out their vehicles regardless.
Last week driving from ATL to SAV stopped at Tesla SC in Macon and 2 of 10 were out of service. Next day on my way back there was a Tesla Tech repairing them. EA and EVgo lets them sit for months without service.
I’ve had the same issue. I think it’s a truck issue and not an EA issue. I’ve tried fast charging with different charge port. Charge point, EA and EV go no luck with either. Very frustrating. Will have to take the truck back to ford
Two questions: 1. On the bottom right of the EA screen there is a Continue icon with a down arrow. Is that anything? 2. Does the Rivian behave better at EA? Thanks, stay cool, and happy travels anyway....
I’ve had lots of issues with my 2020 bolt charging, now I’m a little worried that I converted my reservation to order on the lightning. At least ea has some good locations, like that one close to zipline
I was hard on you guys prior, but want to thank you for the videos showing how the ev system is so bad. So frustrating seeing you guys find a charger and how much crap you have to do just to charge. Tech is not getting better.
Yes Ford is partnered with electrify America so you'd think they'd get them to work on these chargers. Thank goodness when I take delivery of my lightning I'll be charging exclusively at home. Your charming rate drops drastically after 80% SOC.
What’s so ridiculous is that EA is part of the whole VW thing and they’re giving away free charges with VWs and Audis. So even for their own customers this stuff just isn’t working. Make sure you tag EA when you post these to Twitter or Instagram. EV sales went up 60% in the first half of the year - 7% of all vehicles sold in America were EVs. So more and more people are going to start experiencing the same frustrations you are. And this absolutely could just kill EV sales.
I like your videos. Real world. Looks like one of the common problems is EA. We are getting some EA chargers in Cheyenne. ( some day they may turn them on). Those that pull trailers will have some issues. Even if I were to put in a order now it (If I could) it would take awhile before I could get it. I would still like to see what will be offered by GM/Chevy and the improved models that are coming. Keep on showing us the Good, Bad and Ugly.
Interesting to see how unreliable EA is in your experience. Ionity, the EA equivalent in Europe, is getting quite good. Also there are plenty of alternatives regarding different charging providers along the main highways. But still not at Tesla level of reliability. Greetings from Germany 👋⚡️
I believe Plug & Charge with Ford EVs is only at Electrify America stations. We are fortunate that we have only had charging issues one time on our Mach-e.
Another suggestion; when you call EA to report a problem, let them know you are a u-tuber and are recording a video about your charging adventures, and everyone is seeing your problems with the EA stations.
Thanks for taking the hit on the new electric truck..🤠I’m waiting a couples of years so they can work the bugs out 🐜 I’m also waiting for the Dodge electric truck 😬
EA needs to do themselves a favor with their public image and step up and respond to these videos. Plenty of people out here thinking about buying an electric vehicle and not doing so because of issues like this
It really does shake my faith in EVs. We have charged our id4 at that EA several times without issue. But we have had trouble at others occasionally. But these s Chargers need to work every time, not most of the time.
The only thing different that I see between the supercharger network and EA is Tesla's is proprietary and EA is suppose to accommodate all the different EV brands. So I am not sure if that is what the conflict is. Tesla's supercharger network got it right on its first rollout. Everybody else can't seem to figure it out. Lots of customer complaints. All the talk is how they are going to expand their networks. They ought to focus on reliability. I am guessing it's more of a software issue than hardware. There networks can't do a handshake.
After the Dieselgate emissions cheating scandal broke in 2015, VW set up EA spending $2 billion on building and promoting the charging infrastructure in the U.S. was part of the automaker's settlement with the U.S. government. Not sure maintaining and expanding were part of the deal. And I think you are spot on..Ford, GM, Kia etc will need to put pressure on EA to do better. The number that they will admit to is that one out of every five EV purchasers in California dumps their EV and goes back to gas because of the aggravation related with finding chargers, finding fast chargers and then finding charges that actually work.
Tesla just needs to open up the supercharge network and sell an adapter. Everyone would be more than willing to pay for the electricity, in exchange for stalls that ACTUALLY WORK! omg it's maddening.
I wonder if they did any sort of testing on the chargers after they've been installed? Like right after they were built and then periodically to make sure no one has sabotaged it from actually working.

My family just went all electric with an Audi e-tron and a Porsche Taycan. Vehicles are incredible....but got to figure out high speed charging.
It will be nice to see Tesla open up the network, but I do worry how that will all play out. It could cause problems of it's own! Hopefully it's all sorted sooner rather than later!
A major reason why I wouldn’t buy an EV right now is because the charging is so unreliable and so many issues charging. I have never seen a video of someone charging where it has went flawless.
This is why i'd only buy a tesla ev. the other charging networks aren't reliable. Most were compliance projects by VW who HAD to put up chargers as a condition of their diselgate sandal. There were no stipulations that they had to work, be maintained, have a gauranteed uptime, that i know of.
This is exactly why I have only bought Tesla's for EVs. The divorce between the manufacturers and the fast charging companies is just a game of hot potato as to who is at fault. Non-Tesla Manufacturers are just using EA as a compliance network and really hurting EV buyers by not caring about the total ownership experience. I am beginning to think that EV go and electrify America are doing this on purpose. What a way to discourage people from buying an electric car by having the charge stations down or difficult to use. Electrify America was installed by VW group because of the diesel gate, it was part of their settlement with the US government. With only one VW electric car the ID 4 sold in America, it is not in their interest to make charging convenient. Tesla who only sells EV's it is in their interest to make sure charging is convenient. What is a disappointment is Ford and GM are not supporting charging stations.
Something as simple as charging your battery you would think it would just be simple. Imagine autonomous driving they can't even make a battery charge nevermind these trucks driving for you nope.
32 cents a minute...how many minutes does it typically take to charge. Lol when u can actually charge? I don't understand the move to EV's. I'm averaging $50 a week in gas as long as I don't let it get below half tank lol. But the push tho...just doesn't seem like the technology is there yet to be pushing an entire country to buy EV.
I just drove from CA to ON, Canada, hi in Nebraska!. All Tesla superchargers just worked. Tesla is invested in making it work. Where as other automakers pawn off charging to third parties. Hot potato.
Sad how predictable this is. I can only see using this truck of you have at home charging available daily. EA and others need to figure this out quick.
Tesla is just so far ahead of the game . Having there own charging systems it's easier to solve problems . Tesla also is ahead on home charging . You can use a 30 amp 240v electric dryer outlet 3 wire no neutral for Tesla . Ford is 32 amps which is to much currant for a 30 amp circuit . This will limit charging for vacation rentals . You guys are the ginny pigs as early Tesla owners were . They will figure it out but auto manufactured are not tech companies . Also electrify america is also new . It will take a decade until things get more seamless . More or less you have a truck that it will be a struggle to travel with at distance . Probably would be better off with a Tesla to do that at this time .
The EV manufacturers (other than Tesla), need to see how important this it is to get this under control. Thanks for keeping us informed as to what you are finding.
EA has to get it together.
I’m annoyed for you guys. Thanks for documenting your pain.
🤞🏽 I hope this whole process gets streamlined!

See the videos on TH-cam. Fast charge ruins the battery. Get max battery life with 6-to-8-hour trickle charge.
Never seen a slow gas pump.
All this screwing around will be REALLY fun when it's -30

I heard u can report issues though the ford pass
Have you heard TESLA will soon open their charging network to non-Teslas? EA have got to get their act together. You guys are beyond patient.
Oh this is going to get much worse! Wait until you got four or five cars lined up ahead of you and you, wait for 5 hours or more just to get a charge.

Get a tesla less headache, i had tried 4 evs so far, nothing even compare to tesla. Range, network, sw, speed.
Looks like I'll be keeping my Tesla another couple years while ElectrifyAmerica and others get it together.
It's only going to get worse

Why does the Lightning suck on road trips?
Higher speed = less KWH per mile. These EV's like going 55MPH or less.
This is why Tesla is king. It shouldn’t be so hard to charge a vehicle.
Hmmmm sounds like you should’ve bought a diesel…
That’s why I only buy teslas, waiting for cyber truck
Your theory should start with who owns Electrify America? Does legacy really want people switching to EVs so quickly?
If you want to streamline the process buy a normal car. Waiting an hour to charge your car is soooo dumb.
That's why we should buy hybrids
A gas car would be filled in 2 minutes
Exactly. $40 to charge in 90 min or $110 to fill up in 2 minutes. Based on my Hr rate, my time is more valuable.
You should have bought a TESLA!!!!!!
THIS IS INFURIATING! UNACCEPTABLE! 😡😡
Ford needs to step up and do something. Because you know what?? This is NOT AN EA PROBLEM. ITS A FORD PROBLEM!!
What’s the point? EVS are a huge step backwards. This is so dumb.
Wow not good , then gas is much better then electric , to much problems
Go trade it in on a gas vehicle.
The Tesla SuperCharger network will save EV's.
Part of the problem when your buying this trash
All this screwing around will be REALLY fun when it's -30
