      I don't see the sense in more towing videos with the lightning because it's plain to see that the lightning isn't suited for long distance towing. Making more lightning towing videos isn't going to improve its towing range.

    I pull my 7x14 cargo (tool) trailer around town all day long with my 23' Lightning Lariat. The trick is this, charge fully overnight in the driveway and avoid the highway when given the option. I rarely have to use a public charge station, and if I do, because I have apps and lots of technology in the truck, it its easy to plan for. It takes 30 minutes at a fast charger to get to 80%. I drop my trailer, hook up to charger, eat my lunch, do some paperwork, its about45 minutes out of the day, but like I say 99% of charging is done in my driveway. If you are commuting or doing jobs in a town or city, this truck is a dream. If you are hauling a car trailer from New York to Nebraska, you definitely want to look at something else.

      That's wild to me that people are just fine with a 30min stop at the gas station. Imagine if I told people that to get 80% full in the gas tank it was going to take 30mins...they'd be livid, but somehow electric car owners are fine with this...wild

      @@franquil85conn probably because most charging is done in the driveway overnight at a cost of like $7-9 for a full charge. It's wild to me that people are ok with paying $150 for a tank of gas.

      @ElliebotConstruction you think there isn't going to be a shift? Registration costs are gonna be high to account for the tax you aren't paying at the pump and how much does that battery cost again? $36000, Oh yeah ford warranties that high dollar battery for 8 years or 100k miles but only guarantees 70% battery retention, so that 230mile range could go as low as 161 and ford still says it's good. Also, a ford lightning lariat will run you around 72k dollars and a f150 lariat cost around 62k...so I'm not sure where you live at that's 4.90 a gallon (how much it would cost to fill a 30.6 gal tank on the f150 and make it $150), but that's 67 fill ups you can do before the initial costs catch up between the two. At 2041 gal, that is 41k miles I can drive before I catch up to the 10k price difference not counting the 220 setup installed at your house to fast charge it or how much money in electricity spent to drive 41k miles. Not to mention way less payload and way less towing. Hell if you like it great, one day the technology will be there to make it really worth it when it comes to saving money, but it's not there yet imo (for a truck at least).

      Definitely, the J1772 combo charging infrastructure just isn't setup for vehicles that are towing.

      I saw a lightning with a big travel trailer in a pull through charging station a couple weeks ago.... its not a bad deal if it's a pull through. Now if it went to the charging station I took my wife's mustang to last weekend.... he'd be in trouble, angled parking spots with short cables, I had to put the splitter over the curb to get close enough..

    my gues is that the range in colder whether is higher then in hot. the tow package have a dual AC compressor unit to attempt to hold the temp in the battery and motor under control. in colder whether those compressors skuld not have to work as hard.

    Even though the lightning tows trailers very well, it's obvious that you shouldn't expect very much range when doing so. To make it even worse, there aren't enough public chargers for the lightning and those that do exist are often out of service, busy and the majority of them aren't setup to accept a vehicle that's pulling a trailer. With all that said the lightning will pull any trailer up to it's max towing capacity and do that as good or better than any other F150 pickup. And there isn't a range issue as long as you use it to tow locally and can charge it at home.

    Question - with that much weight couldn't you have batteries or generators in the object you tow that could extend that range. Like that mobile home.. couldn't you just about pull over and charge with the batteries or generator in the home?

    My trailer is only 4k lbs fully loaded, not certain you can just double the range given I'm a little less than 1/2 the weight of the 9k trailer in the vid. Also, difficult to estimate range when terrain will play such a huge factor, towing up through the mountains vs a flat coastal beach vaca, but maybe you could throw something at me anyhow? Also wondering how long it would take to recharge it roadside with my Honda 2200 :)

      @@J56609 Yeah you could go to the Wal-Mart EA chargers, drop your RV in the back somewhere, and then charge for around 30mintues to 1hour, then go another 75miles, etc... assuming you can find enough chargers on your route and that are working and arn't being used by others... Going any kind of distance towing would take all day, you would probably always want to go no faster than 55mph to optimize range.

    If you’re just guessing the hitch weight it’s a bit flawed as a payload test - hitch pin weight varies by how it’s loaded not just overall trailer weight.

    So all you have to do is not use any climate controls, radio, lights, or anything else and you only go through most of your extended range battery in 27 miles...but the torque is instant? Wow. Sign me right up for that. Sounds super

      Yep, we go from 10L/100km empty to 17L/100km (summer) to 21L/100km winter when towing a 2000kg totally enclosed trailer. For some weird reason people don’t understand physics thinking an ICE is some magical perpetual motion machine 🤷‍♂️
      Our new Lightning will be a great add to our contracting company 😁
      At max capacity they managed almost 150 miles which is impressive. 131kw/0.9kw per mile=145 miles.

    Electric is not efficient unless your a goto town type of person
    People spend 17-40$ on charging stations and wait 30mins to 2 hours typically eating meanwhile I can buy gas and use bathroom and grab a snack and be gone in 15 minutes or less

      Nobody in their right mind charges to 100% at DC fast chargers. I generally charge between 10% and 80% and it takes less than 35 minutes. I’ve learned to plan rest stops and meal stops while the EV is charging .

      @@jshapiro34 I used to tow with my Lincoln Navigator so I do appreciate the advantages of a gas vehicle. But overall I do prefer towing with the F150 lightning. I only tow my boat about 10 times during summer and I’ll gladly trade the inconvenience of a few days with the advantage the electric offers most of the year.

      Trucks are built to tow before haul a family period.
      And boat ? What kind because theirs a difference in towing a boat that’s 4-8k in weight vs a bass boat or Tahoe t16 deck boat that struggles to weigh 3k
      Also what’s your lake drive 40 minutes same lake every weekend ? Never loaded the family up and towed to another state or lake 4 hours away ?

      @@jshapiro34 i have a 24 foot speed boat which weighs about 5000 pounds, and a pair of jet skis that weigh 2500 pounds. The Lincoln Navigator is rated to tow 9000 pound and the F150 lightning is rated to tow 10,000 pounds. I usually launch at Newport harbor California which is just 48 miles away so I’m easily able to get there and back. I do have my SUV for trips to Lake Havasu which is about 245 miles away. This would indeed be inconvenient to do in the Lightning. And Lightning would not be the right choice for someone who tows 10,000 pounds frequently but I doubt that many of the 700,000 gas F150’s sold each year are used that way.

    Hey Ben, you must be from a big state. 110 miles to get to your neighbor? I know you're exaggerating but people are trying to diminish the truck as much as possible with stuff like this. How big are your counties? In this test with this massive trailer, you could cross Rhode Island 3 times on a charge. I think it can handle a county.

    1:50 for available payload, 150lbs is already allocated for the driver. So at 200lbs, you should only be taking off 50lbs. All that being said, you never want to push the truck to its limits, having 20% to 30% margin is generally advised.

    I'm not a fan of electric vehicles, especially trucks! But wow, that Ford was impressive 👏 surprised that Ford did as well as it did with all that weight! So glad to see you and JBreviews doing videos together. Would like to see more videos stressing the payload on GMC and Dodge. Because we all know the boogeyman in the room is that these companies are trying to force average truck buyers to buy HD's instead of their mediocrity 1500 frames! And with real-life situations, it's nice to see what these 1500's can do given their limits.✌️out.

      People should be buying HD trucks since if you get a crew cab on any half ton truck I guarantee you the payload is exceeded if you have passages and tow. Hd are only like 3-4 more than halfton, not crazy.

    They need to come out with trailers specifically made for this truck that regen the battery through the trailer hookup while towing. It won't give you a net positive charge while towing due to physics, but it will mitigate the power loss, while also extending the range.

      They have already created a travel trailer with it's own battery and electric motors on the axles. It will actually assist in towing the weight of the trailer therefore increasing the range of the truck. Downside, it costs $109k lol

    I’m a fan of JBs channel so pretty cool to see him on your channel.
    As for the video, well you can see EVs are definitely not ready for real world towing. And plus an enclosed trailer like this is the absolute worst for towing efficiency. It’s like having a big parachute behind you. The stability is good because they are so heavy, nearly as much as JBs 3500 and that’s a big part of towing stability. Power is good too because it’s instant like you say. But the range is just not at all realistic. I have a trailer very similar to JBs for my racecar and I typically have to tow 260 mile round trips to go racing. So this Lightning wouldn’t even make it one way to the track lol.

    I think Electric trucks have their own place along with gas and diesels. In the same sense that you wouldn’t use a naturally aspirated truck to tow in the mountains, or you wouldn’t use a diesel dually to tow locally; you could use a EV truck to tow locally.
    There’s no perfect powertrain, you use what suits your situation.

If I was towing a trailer like that, I too wouldn't want to drive it very far since it would go about 118 miles on a full charge getting .9 miles per KWH. However, I'll make a few points about the Lightning: I'm more concerned about the amount of air being pushed as that effects the range dramatically. That trailer with a fairly square shape will have more effect that a similarly weighted trailer with different size (cross sectional area) and coefficient of drag. Many camping trailer are similar or even bigger than that trailer, so they too would be a poor choice for towing long distances. A 41 minute charge adds about 76 more miles for this trailer (65%. charge *131KWH*.9 miles/KWH). So if the chargers are available, I might be willing to OCCASIONALLY tow that kind of trailer up to about that 190 mile range, especially since that kind of rip usually entails a 10+ minute break anyway. Many chargers may be hard to get to with a trailer, especially during certain times. However, I have used them pulling 24' boat without disconnecting. And in Utah, some chargers are set up for that. I've mentioned before that I've towed my 24' boat filly loaded (over 6500 lbs)on freeway and hills and got 160 mile range averaging 1.2 miles/KWH. So it works in many situations but not all.

    Great vehicle in many ways…except at actually doing truck things.
    I’m no ev hater, I just don’t think the tech is here yet to do this type of work. None of my camping friends, myself included, want to have to charge every 100 miles. It’s just too little.

      The lightning does great at all truck things if you use it locally. I traded in my 2014 F150 V8 flex fuel , crew cab with towing package, heavy-duty suspension that averaged 10 mpg and about 8 mpg when towing. My lightning platinum does everything that it could do better and a whole lot cheaper with none of the maintenance that I had to perform on my 2014. Absolute the best F150 that I've ever owned.

    If you’re looking to tow regularly this truck is not for you. Which is only a small percentage of truck owners. The crew cab truck has been the new family hauler for years. They dont tow anything but like the space and size for the family. But it’s nice to know that the EV trucks can tow that weight in case you need it someday. Stick to diesel if you tow often. Lot of people crying here about this and that. Lol. Not everyone has the same needs and wants people. Carry on

    Instead of the max load torture test, what about a reasonable test of normal 1/2T truck uses? Say 25% loaded with trips to the hardware store? Towing a 16’ fishing boat?

    Do a longer test, bet you don’t make a 90 mile trip, that’s been proven before. Thanks but no thanks. We are leaving soon on a 3,000 mile plus trip with my 5.9 towing 7k plus 1k in bed I get 11-12 mpg x 34 gallons you tell me how many days I would have to add to my trip never mind anxiety.

    ICE half tons would probably get 100 to 125 miles towing this. 13,000 lbs is WAY more than a half ton should be towing.

    I could not even go to the dunes and back with one charge towing a trailer with toys
    I live 60 miles from the coast dunes. Sad why ford why this is useless as a work rig unless you live 20 or 30 max miles from home.

    100 miles when towing on a charge - completely unfit for purpose - imagine towing a boat or horse float or trailer and having to stop to recharge ever 100 miles - if you can find an available charging station with access for a truck and trailer. You would have to be an idiot to buy one of these trucks if you want to tow.

    When android phones first came out the batteries sucked! That was when you could take the battioit of the android. So everyone had 3 batteries with them for the day. Now in 2023 android batteries are excellent. So: Now in the Earl stages of EV vehicles the batteries suck like android 15 years ago. When 2030 and beyond arrive... Especially with regenerative breaks... Batteries will be excellent in EV trucks because Big companies will have been improving them for years. People won't remember How long they use to have to wait to charge their car...they will remember how they use to need a mechanic to work in their engine and how they use to watch their money get burnt through the engine. Imagine 20 years from now advanced auto parts and O'Reilly's etc will be a thing if the past because EV will receive engine software updates just like android and IOS do today. A mechanic will be a job of the past.

    I love the technology. However I don’t think electric is quite there yet to compete with the 2500+ diesels. But trust me as soon as that technology is better I will switch in a heartbeat.
    Electric is definitely doing well to directly compete with the gas and small diesels like GM are producing. Only a matter of time as batteries range and charging speeds increase.
    I’d say once electric can get to about 350 miles to a charge WHILE towing then we will be ready.

      I stop every 200 miles when towing 7K with my Ecoboost. I think 250 will be enough if they transition to 800V for faster charging. Most tow trips are relatively short. My longest single day trip was 800 miles from Houston to Northern New Mexico. I think the savings would be worth the extra time, especially since it's rare for me to tow that far. Most of the savings is accrued with daily driving anyway. I skip $100 fill-ups for my Expedition and drive my EV around town instead.

      I meant electric 2500+. When I’m towing 15k lbs it’s hard enough to find somewhere to park and eat let alone park and charge.
      That’s why once the range is better electric will be perfect. Even with a diesel I tend to stop and fill up then take a little break and grab something to eat and rest for a few before moving on. If I can get most of my charge back in about an hour while the family and I eat, use the bathroom, stock up on snacks, it’ll be perfect.

      I think solid state by later in this decade and the e axles for hd trucks magna is working hard on right now will enable something like that. 🤔
      I mean our next energy took a tesla model s, gutted the stock pack out. Put in their own prismatic cells, new bms system etc. All still in the stock pack case, bolted it right back under the car. Added only about 300#more weight and they went 770 miles at hwy speeds in Michigan winter and over 850 in the summer time without any charging stops. So long long ranges can be done with evs to. It's just gonna be a few more year's.👍🏻

      @@4literv6 That was a prototype pack that combined multiple cell types. ONE is still building its factory, it's going to be awhile before we get ample cell capacity and solid state deployed to production. Tesla has been building EVs for years and it's still cell constrained. But EV trucks are still really good for fleets and trades that only cover a metro area. Who is towing a trailer 100 miles every day? I bet most fleets see far fewer miles than that. And the vehicles will get progressively better. The fuel and maintenance savings for fleets are substantial.

    It have the((((( PLASTIC)))))BLOCKs in the bed! Not a 5th set up. Or a BALL set up. Think about it BEN. It's going to a video do it right. I pulled RV with a 03 Chevy 2500 SO SO many. From top of Indian where the made from to cal. You need to ADD the ((slide )) 5th it's will probably 250. Then the rails and the bolt and nuts. You need but 350 in the bed of the truck. Then go from there !!!🤔🤔🤔. OVER LOADED. !!! I promise you it's over loaded about 800. Not good. What kind of tires on it. It's F. 8ply. Or d 6ply. 6 ply will not do a 5th wheel for a long period!
