It's extremely common when thinking. Your brain can't efficiently do multiple things at once so it puts some processes in a loop so it can divert resources/focus/thinking-power to something else before revisiting those processes for revision. You can also apply this to speech patterns and words we use more frequently than others. For example when splattercat wants to move things just a little he often says "ever so slightly". Everybody has these little quirks in their speech and actions and for many people, it's just random cussing. Sorry for the wall of text.
I don't know if I agree. Making those resources non-buildable areas is obviously a design choice made to limit the player. Allowing players to change that would do nothing but make the game easier.
I think they need the bulldoze option as well and they can compermise with the player by making it require a decent amount of gold to use it, or reduce the player's overall score by 1 at the end of the round every time you use it (like say your final score was 300 but you buildozed 50 zone areas. That would make your final score 250). I would be happy with eather of those choices.

I just realized. With the bulldozer command, assuming one has been/gets implemented... You can cheese the hells out of it. Bulldoze in the middle of say, an iron field, or a stone field, plop down your quarry, and BOOM. Maximum production from one building. That would be amazing.
I think the idea of playing aggressive vs being cautious is that if you can expand out in a way that leaves you the same number of choke points as if you built your initial defenses closer to base, at the cost of a few extra pylons, it's worth trying for. The zombies seem pretty tame starting out and the pause option gives you a lot of leeway to make regular checks of your perimeter.
I beat the 1st map just yesterday on 100%. Some tips. 1, get about 30 Rangers to be expanding with early. 2, economy economy economy. 3, Turn off oil when you have a full stockpile. 4, advanced mills aren't worth having. 5, After the 2nd horde you'll get a wave of zombies from all sides so you need to have at least 1 thick wood wall and a ballista on each wall. 6, Rush the ballista tech and place one as soon as you know what side the 1st horde is attacking. 7, Expand as much as you can after every horde, wood walls and ballistas are fine until the 5th horde then you need stone. 8, get 10-15 titans as soon as you can and clear the map so you can expand to cover it all with walls and defences leave yourself about 30 days to do all the building before the final horde aim to start building for the final horde starting on day 60-65. 9, Don't use gates, they have lower hp than walls over the same area, just delete a piece of wall if you want to go outside your walls, similarly towers have more hp then walls in the same space but are more expensive.

For choke points also do a dub wall than a single spacw then dub wall with a tower built into the rear of the second wall. It will stall them much more effectively though you can only do this in small funnels. That also makes segregating your city to slow infection a litter easier it you got the room.
Not sure if you want to try to use a tactic that I use but here it is. Instead of making a soldier center go right for the wood worker and research ballistic towers fast. You can then set up some ballista's for defense and then go for soldiers. Having that word researcher available you can rush to farms and cottages.
MY SUGGESTION: I would suggest doing layered defenses. Meaning that you have a tight wall against your colony that is just past your developments (houses, factories, mills, ect.) then you have a concentric ring a few tiles (maybe 10) away that will have your main defenses on it. Make sure both inner and outer ring has solid defenses (towers, ballistas, electric towers ect) so that when day 70+ comes you can fall back to a fresh set of defenses and can continue the fight. Play aggressive at first to secure some of all resources, then turtle the F*UCK out of your chokes. Make sure your choke points aren't hurting you though either. Make the enemy funnel, not your defenses. Your walls should be 6 or more pillions wide so you can set your defenses correctly. Enemies don't stack on the same square, they have to wait their turn to die. If you're reading this Mr. Splat and it doesn't make much sense, just let me know and I can make a visual presentation for you so that my tactical genius (lol) can be understood. I love your videos and MOST IMPORTANTLY, we watch your videos to watch you play the game. SO, have fun and kill on!
if you dont know the basic stuff to secure yourself in germany (ip switch etc,) ur most likely fucked since politics managed to go 1 step further to fuck with access and storage of information regarding internet usage. So while you mean it good it can get others into trouble as well paying alot more then paying the little amount of money this game costs. i think developers deserve the money for good games ( if it is a reasonable price 20-30 Bugs for a new good game are fine) There are downsides for you advertising this way of purchasing games as well. Such as dragging to much attention to the webside you mentioned catching the laws eye. I understand you meant it in a good way so please do not think i mean what i write in an offensive way.

I feel like in a zombie apocalypse defense is more important than offense, since in a world like this the enemy is nigh infinite. You can't kill them all.

Got it on Steam when it was released, amazing game, I like the fact that it's difficult (rts pleb), I don't need a game to hold my hand, I'll learn on the job, currently still getting to know the basics and the best way to progress, but this looks very promising! Enjoying it immensely and because of the random maps, the replay value is very high.
Just what ever you do DON'T get complacent!! I got to day 54 and had a horde from the east and dealt with it but also got hit from the north and it was a wipe simply because i didn't have the solders needed to defend the walls.

I feel like it would make things much easier if you first built one layer and you went on with the second only after you are protected on all fronts. I agree on building in general two walls. What I don't understand is why building it immediately. You end up having the same wall even, not functional until you complete both layers... whereas if you put the first layer and then the second you would be protected even before finishing the second layer...
I've found ways to save skum ironman games. Find the save games on your computer, make a copy of it every so often and then if something goes wrong delete the main save and rename the copy to what the main save was called.
Something I have noticed while watching people play this game is the soldier center always goes down really late. I see people focus on walls first and that usually spreads their city out and makes it hard to defend with the small number of troops they give you to start with. By the time the hordes start coming there are huge wooden walls everywhere but only five or six guys to defend the whole thing. I imagine it would be more effective to use the walls and troops to defend key building early on rather than entire choke points. It looks like expansion in this game is linked to your ability to defend it so the larger the military the better you can defend a larger area.
He good have gotten the 10 wood spot. If you look carefully at 2:35, you’ll see that he was hovering over a 10 wood spot! Throughout the video, you can see that he loses opportune places.
Splat if u don't want ironman mode, just take the backup of My Documents-> My Game-> They are Billions Folder. Its the save game folder. If something goes wrong just replace it.
Remember to save some land to the right for farms. I mean, it's a HUGE grass field, I mean it's the biggest. I bet you have never seen such a big grass field in "They are Billions". I mean it is truly the biggest field in the game, ever, it's humongous! It's true.
u can bypass the ironman mode. find the save files and save them as a backup for yourself. copy them back into the save folder to restart from that save
Why not do a ring on the outer defense with spiked traps Inbetween the ring and then put ballista around your inner walls that should help with the jumpers
What about inner wall without gaps. And outer wall with gaps where zombies will try to pass. And you can defend this gaps very well. What AI will think about it?

Save scumming in my experience prevents learning. You don’t suffer they hard consequences of your mistakes, so you’re liable to make them again. That’s how I got better at Xcom, when you lose your Alpha squad because of one positioning error, you’ll never be that aggressive again
Honestly, I have to ask. Why are you not building quarries and shit to gather up that ore around your base? Even if you have no use for it right that moment, having both a reserve and a resupply line of it already up when you do would be massively helpful.
and you can save scum i had too they gilched through a area that units cant pass. you go in the my games folder and use the backup save file. (Does anyone know if any types of infected can cross water or get passed trees?)
There is a gap in the wall on the west side of the lake to the north east. Right at the shoreline. Also, does the difficulty ramp up in a sort of exponential way, or does it reach a maximum that is controllable if you make the right choices in early game. In short, is the game beatable, or are you destined to loose?
Immortan_JoJo ahhh ok. I was watching another guy he was able to place gates using the landscape shifting left and right and made a 3 or 4 lager thick wall. At 3 it stopped the jumpers.
Hi @SplatterCatGaming since the AI keeps looking for a gap or weak spot why not trick it to your advantage. Like keeping a gap in a wall or probably missing a second wall spot in a double wall making it look like the easy way into the city.
Anandan Konar they go off of soldiers and other defences not just walls so even if he did that theyd go to a double wall without soldiers before they went to a single with soldiers i believe
@nathan rea aahhhaa I see... so this could be more like a trial again stacking walls and defense structures on one side and pulling all the defense units to the opposite side. Wonder what parameters the AI would calculate than hmmm...
if you could save scum this game it'd be easy to master in 3-4 plays and then you'd be out of content... as frustrating as it is I feel most of the joy & longevity comes from incremental success from play to play
You're building your walls at the end of chokes, meaning when they mass your walls they don't get grouped into smaller areas.
If hes not at the tesla coil tech yet than those small choke points will fuck him up if its in large numbers. So Its better to have a bigger wall.

When you use a funnel make sure you move the horde into the choke point before they hit the wall. It forces less zombies to hit the wall.

2nd attempt got me to day 93. I didnt know every zombie in the game would head my way for the last wave. I was woefully unprepared

copy them back into the save folder to restart from that save
Why not do a ring on the outer defense with spiked traps Inbetween the ring and then put ballista around your inner walls that should help with the jumpers
What about inner wall without gaps. And outer wall with gaps where zombies will try to pass. And you can defend this gaps very well. What AI will think about it?

Save scumming in my experience prevents learning. You don’t suffer they hard consequences of your mistakes, so you’re liable to make them again. That’s how I got better at Xcom, when you lose your Alpha squad because of one positioning error, you’ll never be that aggressive again

Honestly, I have to ask. Why are you not building quarries and shit to gather up that ore around your base? Even if you have no use for it right that moment, having both a reserve and a resupply line of it already up when you do would be massively helpful.

and you can save scum i had too they gilched through a area that units cant pass. you go in the my games folder and use the backup save file. (Does anyone know if any types of infected can cross water or get passed trees?)

There is a gap in the wall on the west side of the lake to the north east. Right at the shoreline.
Also, does the difficulty ramp up in a sort of exponential way, or does it reach a maximum that is controllable if you make the right choices in early game. In short, is the game beatable, or are you destined to loose?

Also to help play the ai what you can do is leave a path open just maze it and set up defenses in your maze.

Immortan_JoJo ahhh ok. I was watching another guy he was able to place gates using the landscape shifting left and right and made a 3 or 4 lager thick wall. At 3 it stopped the jumpers.
Are there control groups in this game?
Hi @SplatterCatGaming since the AI keeps looking for a gap or weak spot why not trick it to your advantage. Like keeping a gap in a wall or probably missing a second wall spot in a double wall making it look like the easy way into the city.
Anandan Konar they go off of soldiers and other defences not just walls so even if he did that theyd go to a double wall without soldiers before they went to a single with soldiers i believe
@nathan rea aahhhaa I see... so this could be more like a trial again stacking walls and defense structures on one side and pulling all the defense units to the opposite side. Wonder what parameters the AI would calculate than hmmm...

if you could save scum this game it'd be easy to master in 3-4 plays and then you'd be out of content... as frustrating as it is I feel most of the joy & longevity comes from incremental success from play to play
