you know, usually when a band cover a song they do it to honour the band who wrote it. Green Day's point wasn't to tell everybody "hey, we're better than the clash!". they just enjoy playing this song and wanted to honour one of their favourite bands.

Never knew Green Day loved Buddy Holly and the Crickets that much 😆
Just kiddin' I feel ya. Green Day does not have a snobby attitude at all....they will, however, defend anyone who is being treated badly/unjustly. I'll never forget the stage dive Billy did when someone in the audience wouldn't stop fighting..he asked nicely, then not so nicely....they still didn't listen so he leap/jumped feet first to stop the fight. He was vicious. I believe that fight stopped quite promptly. 🤣
They are on the underdog's side, 100% . Not out there to out-do anyone. Ever.

I Fought the Law" is a song written by Sonny Curtis of the Crickets and became popularized by a remake by the Bobby Fuller Four, which went on to become a top-ten hit for the band in 1966 and was also recorded by the Clash in 1979. The Bobby Fuller Four version of this song was ranked No. 175 on the Rolling Stone list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2004, and the same year was named one of the 500 "Songs that Shaped Rock" by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Buddy Holly's Crickets did the original after Buddy's death. Bobby Fuller, a fellow west Texan who loved Buddy Holly re did it in 64 or 65 and had the biggest hit as well as the definitive version. The Clash, while touring the US heard it on a jukebox in a diner and decided to cover it, also having a hit with it. Since then, it's been covered by the Stray Cats, Green Day, and the Dead Kennedys amongst overs. I don't care how many times it's been recorded, it's still a great song and most everyone has done it justice. I did not care much for the Dead Kennedy's version and my favorite is the Bobby Fuller 4 version. This is pretty great. I hope I don't have my hipster card revoked for liking the Green Day version.

He bends the note too high and it kinda sounds like shit.... :/ the singing is good tho, but he doesn't even touch the solo, which was kind of a disappointment. I have to say, the clash did it better, my opinion anyways.

I've been lucky enough to have seen The Clash play live on a number of occasions - including an unforgettable free and unpublicised acoustic session at Glasgow Arts School. Clash fans should be thankful to Green Day for keeping an awesome punk version of this song alive.

  • @Cubs1719

@cpj93070 Haha yes I know thank you. As we all know A - Hitsville USA is a moniker Motown Records used as both a reference to their chart-topping prowess and their original headquarters in Detroit; and B- The Clash's title is a reference to Motown in relationship with the emerging British Indie Rock scene of the late 70's vs the "Fat-Cat" Major Studios (such as Small Wonder and Factory). I simply couldn't fit all of that in the original post: I was hoping people would understand my leap :(

@impalax327 that's only a live band, on the studio versions Billie Joe plays all the guitar parts. Other people are only credited to things like piano and saxophone. I own American Idiot and Dookie and it says Billie Joe -Guitars, no one else is credited for guitarwork. from Warning onward they started using two guitars so he asked his friend Jason White to come on stage with them and play lead guitar so and he can jump around and entertain the audience while just playing rhythm guitar

The whole point of a tribute is to play the song in your own way, it's ment to be a honor to the artists who crated the song. And it's not the point that everyone who liked the original loves the cover.
I'm sure the clash is only happy that people play their songs in a new way. At least that's what i would have thought if people were to cover something i had crated.

@sicsuperjoint112 thanks, and just as a side note, you're probably an adult and i just wanna let you know i'm a suburban teenager, and while most of the kids in my school are exactly as you described, i'm not. don't know if you think all suburban teens are like that, but in case you do, i'm just letting you know. (i'm actually not sure if where i live is a suburb, but i really think it is, it's a midsize city near Los Angeles and inside the metro area of Los Angeles. that's a suburb, right?

@cpj93070 I guess what I should have written was:
" See I am not even a "punk", my favorite types of music are Motown (Hitsville USA! - Which reminds me there's a Clash Song whose title is a reference to Motown Called Hitsville UK. See they -The Clash- switched the USA to UK in order to comment about the major labels. Boy what a great Clash song!) and Hip Hop."
Hah that doesn't work either. Oh well I guess I'm just going to have to hope people are smart enough to make abstract connections...

@ObamaDnigg thank you for those kind words. I think you are reading a bit deeply into my words. I believe I said "this is just awful," NOT "Green day are awful." Im terribly sorry for any confusion you may have previously had.

For those who say Green Day isn't punk rock, they still are! Their definition of punk rock is playing what they want to play and so eff off anyone who says they aren't anymore, Green Day has their own version of punk rock!
