Your respect for the fish really comes out in this vid. Wish more people were into catch and release fishing...also a mark only retention fishery for B.C. chinook just makes sense.

I have wanted to fish on that side of the island for years now just can’t get away from the Barkley sound.

Great show! I hope you guys in BC can get those hatcheries to start clipping 100% of chinook and keep fishing. There are so many frustrating things happening with our fisheries in Washington and BC. Closures are definitely not the answer.

We hope so too. Frustrating for sure but I think we will be able to make the proper changes happen one day.

@@gmoney1762 Mid August to mid September off the west side of San Juan was always the season I looked forward to most. We used to do well in July but the big fish and numbers were when all those fall chinook returned. Most people concentrated on coho and pinks then though so it always went under the radar. Someone would catch a king here and there but if you know where and when to be there the chinook fishing was some of the best in the state. One of my best days chinook fishing was the Sunday before Labor Day 2004. We had 4 chinook in the boat and were back in with the fish cleaned and eating breakfast before 9:00am. Mine was 38, my friends was 33, my moms was 22, and my dads was 13. We tried to talk my dad into releasing his but he said no way, haha. Most of those fish in Aug-Sept are BC stocks and are not clipped so who knows if or when it will ever be open again. It makes me sad that my nephews may never get to experience it like I did.

@@gmoney1762 Hopefully some day it will be open again for hatchery chinook because a lot of those late summer/fall cookie cutter 10-15lb chinook are probably BC hatchery fish from rivers like the Vedder. I have a favorite spot on the west side of the island that I really miss fishing.

Alaska is trading the lions share of the impacts hence closures in BC. If it was open to hatchery retention impacts would be higher

That is exactly what needs to happen and we are conservationists who will gladly put money/time and effort into healthy stocks for all to benefit.. now just get dfo to follow the science lol and I work for the gov so I understand how frustrating that can be lol keep the great vids coming luv it 👊🏻

I had no idea your salmon fishery management is decades behind the science. Having salmon fished from Prince Rupert down to lower Vancouver Island I certainly appreciate how enjoyable and productive your salmon fishery is. To choose closure over not clipping an adipose fin is IMO just poor management. When we first started fin clipping here in the Northwest, several organizations provide volunteers for fin clipping days. It is not that hard, a good way to meet and chat with follow anglers. Your hands do get cold, so bring some hand warmers.

Absolutely, I think there are many options to consider and implement that would be much better than what is currently happening.

Guys, just so you know after speaking with a biologist there are by-catch of chinook salmon in quantities over 60,000 pounds just dumped back in the ocean from commercial fisherman. They’re not allowed to keep the salmon because that’s not their target fish so they are dumped back in dead. This system of fish management is deplorable and needs to change
