Comic Relief: Friday Night Live Lives Again!, 12/03/93 - Ben Elton introduces Newman & Baddiel in History Today! Not my copyright (obviously), just sharing found ephemera.
One of my best ever moments on Twitter was talking to David Baddiel a few times over thread replies in about 2017-18 and being very cordial with him, only to land him with a "that's you that is" eventually. I got a thumbs up and a retweet as it must've tickled him. Very few others even got the joke. I think most people now only know Baddiel as the 3 Lions or Fantasy Football bloke, but he was a really funny guy at one point, as was Rob Newman. Me and a mate still do the "that is" joke all the time and it's always hard to see it coming even though we know each others humour. You know that dead rabbit we just saw over there? That's your dinner that is. That kinda thing.
I always thought that David Baddiel's professor looked a lot like Dr. David Starkey(back when he sported a moustache). Does anyone see the resembalance?
You can hear that by even the early 1990's the audience struggle with this. Too few of them have been to unis with characters like this on the teaching staff.
And unfortunately now, too many go to university who are nowhere near the calibre. Hence why there are ridiculous degrees available. Get universities back to the 10% that are the calibre, or charge full whack for the Mickey mouse courses with no loan, no funding, zero. That would mean you could fund the meaningful courses to be free. Science. Engineering. Doctors. Etc. That's what this country needs. Not media studies. Not accountancy. Not literature.
Its obvious the audience have no experience of The Mary Whitehouse Experience, Punt, Dennis, Newman or Baddiel - its embarrassing. It also didn't help that they repeated the same jokes. Ben Elton already took that job. Cringe.
Sorry, lads. Loved the sketches. But it's a bit tired and overdone here. And they lent into the, 'That's you, that is' too quickly towards the end. Also, Baddiel sounds like Baddiel in this.
Someone scolded me once for quoting Newman and Baddiel all the time, but has there honestly been anything better since? Apart from Mitchell and Webb? No.
@@80sandretrogubbins25 tbh it was a bit of a false opposition... Because I can't help but think of Newman specifically - the _stand up_ ... his intimate conversational style of lulling you into a false sense of security before unexpectedly pulling the rug from under your feet was so playful and effective, I haven't seen anything like it since. He's a comedy genius.

Was the audience awake ??? This is quality comedy and they didnt notice.
In 1985 a Glasgow Uni Union audience would have ruptured themselves laughing.
That’s the gold standard
“That’s you that is..”
What a gem. Never seen this version of the show before 😅
I like how they changed it up a bit.
Hmm, a bit... thats your willy that is.

It could have been the inspiration for the look of the character.

Punt & Dennis?! I'll let that just sit like a dog turd on a sunny day.
Was the audience dead or deaf?
pretty sure after 5 minutes, the audience were wishing they were either.
Most of it was repeated material from their previous TV appearances. Plus, it had been over used by this point.
“That’s your mum that is” earned them millions. Inexplicably popular but eventually people noticed it was shit

There's a huge juxtaposition there
Ali G was a revelation. But to be honest the 90s and early 2000s was great for comedy.
