Bret, the control on the left side of the Rode VideoMic + isn’t an amp, it’s a two step high pass filter. It’s meant to reduce rumble from ambient sources like traffic or machinery. I also agree with the comment about the dead cat. When I use a mic in high wind conditions, I use a dead cat, but put the mic on an extension arm, pointed downward, to keep it out of frame.
Thanks for this. Our main struggle now is, if we make the OSMO that big (hand holder, phone, mic), maybe it's best to stick with the Sony 6300 and a Gimbel.
Thanks for the comparisons. I would have gained a more complete understanding of whether buying an external mic was worth my investment if your comparison included the sound quality from the Osmo Pocket itself, without any external microphone. I agreed with your assessment of which products were better. FYI, it is likely that the identical appearing Movo and Boya mics were both manufactured by the same third party manufacturing company who sold their microphone product to Movo with one set of specifications for audio quality and to Boya with another. That way each company can compete in the market at the price point that matches their business plan. An important service you provided was to let viewers see that just because two competing products that look the same, but one is at a lower cost, doesn't necessarily mean it is a better buy. Buyers always benefit from side-by-side performance comparisons.
I’ve been vlogging exclusively daily for the past few weeks with no mic on my osmo pocket and am very happy with the sound quality. Initially i was planning on getting a mic but i just don’t think it is necessary anymore. It’s a great standalone camera after the firmware updates
Brett, the only trouble is you can’t us those large mics with the dead cat because the dead cat will always be in the shot. A small mike is best and keeps it simple. TRS stands for Tip Ring Sleeve and TRRS then stands for Tip Ring Ring Sleeve. So ring ring is stereo like you had on the first small mike. I think with just the TRS you were getting one of the Pocket’s mic, thus the strange sound. DJI is preforming highway robbery with shipping the mic adaptor comes out to $60.
@@brettgaramella Try a wired lavaliere mic. I'm working on a video now about only using a digital recorder with you and then deleting the video out of the camera and laying in the video from the digital recorder and the sound on the video always sounds the same. I should finish it in a day or two. But with the lavaliere pinned to your lapel, it always sounds great.
Glad to see someone else understand the TRS/TRRS abbreviations. Have you come across anything which indicates whether the Osmo Pocket is capable of stereo audio? My guess is it doesn't.
@@3goldfinger Yes, I know. I have been involved with this for over 40 years. The thing is that two monos' don't make a stereo. With a TRRS the Tip is common. The two Rings are the left and right and the sleeve is the ground.
Another very helpful piece, Brett. I think that it emphasizes the point that one might well make sure any mic you purchase to use with the Pocket is returnable if the output is too low (or high). As for me: I am using an inexpensive lav mike with my new DJI adapter. From Amazon: Neewer 3.5mm Hands Free Computer Clip on Mini Lapel Microphone(3X Lapel Microphone) For 'talking head' stuff, it is so good and so simple to do. I don't have to build up a bunch of stuff. I just use the Pocket with the mic adapter and the lav mike (with foam or dead cat for wind). Very simple and easy. No, it doesn't look like CBS did it! But to me, the beauty is to 'run and gun' on location shots, mixing B roll with talking headshots with an occasional interview (using one of the available two-lav mic kits out there). Before the mic adapter, doing talking head and interviews wasn't useful on the Pocket without something like my H1 (one more thing to carry and more effort to sync it up in post). When there's no talking head, I just use the Pocket's internal mics for ambient sound and to help sync the audio in post. So there are just three pieces I need to carry: the Pocket, the mic adapter, and the lav mic. They ALL fit in one pants pocket, and you don't attract much if any attention especially from security-types. It's a "minimalist-at-all-costs" rig. I would like to try your rig, but then I'd have to carry all that stuff (and make sure it's all turned on!). BTW, I tried the new mic adapter with a USB-C male to female data-power cable I have. It works. I sometimes use this same data cable to remotely connect my Android phone to the Pocket. But I digress. To summarize, the mic adapter works and makes absolute minimalist videoing with decent audio possible. -Just one man's view.
@@brettgaramella Thanks. I think if a lav is good enough for the Colbert Show, it's good enough for me. I like to blend in and a DSLR, Joby, and a fluffy dead cat don't blend. One downside i can see with Osmo pocket position of the inplug is that it is downside. I have the same problem on my gopro 7 with adapter where the cable is hanging down. If you shake a little, or move camera fast, the cabel might loosen a little bit, then you will either get no sound, or you will get sound from left to right.Or, you will get a little noise in the record. It takes just a little tiny bit of loosing and you got a problem. This was so big problem for me that i ordered a new case to my gopro where i could put the adapter so that the cable was not from downside but on level side. Not sure jet since the case was ordered from china and i have not jet received it, but my tips is that it will be better since the cable is not hanging down. Btw, very good video, i am considering buying either the movo 10 or 3000. They both was good. Thanks for a great video:)
Hi Brett! I use my pocket to record footage in night clubs and at festivals. If I’m standing anywhere near a speaker the bass distorts the audio. Would a microphone resolve this issue? Thanks
Does the Sennheiser Ambeo headset work with the DJI Osmo pocket? I'd like to record 3D binaural audio using the Sennheiser Ambeo Headset with the Osmo pocket, but I'm not sure whether the Ambeo headset is compatible with the Osmo pocket. The Ambeo headset comes with a lightening cable (ideally integrated with IOS devices), but I can connect it with the Osmo pocket using a USV-C to lightening audio adaptor! If the adaptor doesn't work, is there a way to make this happen?
The DJI 3,5 mm adapter is a major problem. DJI is not fair with their customers. They sell the DJI Osmo Pocket with a bad microphone so that you have to buy the adapter plus an external mic. You must add all that stuff to the price of the Osmo. So just think about the usage of your Osmo pocket before spending your money for a DJI external mic.
You shoudl also turn the mic away from your face while you are talking. The MOVO VXR10 and Boya are shotgun mics that have a directional pickup. The meant to only pick up sound from in front of them. The VXR300 is a stereo omnidirectional mic that will pickup sound from all directions, this is most likely why it sounds tinny because it pickup your voice reflecting off your set.
Nice review... but does the audio levels low, moderate and high affect how the mics project during recording? I still am confused as to why you have the different audio settings, especially when you don't have the DJI audio adapter. Where would you use these settings?
Well, another week has passed, and it seems pretty clear that this adapter is an expensive POS. Only option is to use an external recorder, and I think the Zoom H1 fit the bill, just the right size.

How would you use a mic adapter if you are using the wireless attachment (plugs into the same hole) on the bottom of the camera to use the Mimo phone software without a cord?
Hey, would this work with the bottom wireless adapter mounting on a tripod extension that points the USB-C connector to the side which would then have an external mic connected to it via the official USB mic Jack connector?
I like the $52 Rode video mic compact which unfortunately was not included here in this comparison, especially against the movo vxr10 that you recommend. but, your video was great, very informative & exceeds
You need a 3.5mm connector with TRS (Tip Ring Sleeve) plug end (thats the one with 2 rings), Its the only one that will work correctly with the osmo pocket.

Hi Brett. Not sure if you mentioned on what audio settings you tested the mics, but I have tried on all audio levels on the Mimo and I get low volume on all settings. I wish you had used the video from the Osmo as well to convince us that you are actually recording on the Osmo... Not that I a doubting you :). As I read in the comments that the adapter will not work with the wireless module, I think I will pass on this and stick with my external Instamic. BTW the plugs are TRS (2 lines) and TRRS (3 lines) so when you are buying a cable you will know. TRRS is used where there is a headphone socket on the mic as it has 4 channels while the TRS (stands for Tip, Ring, Sleeve - being the parts of the plug) is mic only.
I bought rode videomic go for my dji pocket 2 but i get a glinch in my audio. I tested my mic on other devices, it was working perfectly. Then I bought a 3.5mm trs to trrs cable and this time camera was not recording any audio.
Does the Osmo Pocket require Phantom power? I tried it with a Boya by-hm100. I think the adapter I bought from Osmo is faulty. I have bought two of them. ;(
Thanks for this video. I am just starting with this kind of setup. And I bought VXR10 exactly this model, but I am surprised that it massively underperforms with DJI OSMO Pocket. The volume comes out 20 times lower than expected. Or am I missing something like putting it a bit far (maybe 3 feet distance)? In the OSMO Pocket settings, I have boosted the audio settings up to +20dB. Still, I could not hear my own voice properly. Are there any other things can be done? I will really appreciate any input :) cheers!

I'll stick with the x3000r. Mic adapters are garbage and break very easily. I keep looking for a new 4k 60fps camera, but it must have a mic port and external charging to be long term useful.
To my ears, the Movo VXR 3000 is the best. By the way, this a stereo mic. I have no idea if the Osmo is able to record stereo audio. I was never a friend of mono recording. However, I can´t find it over here in Europe.

Thanks man. That’s a useful video. Impressed with the value for money Movo!
Does the Osmo Pocket require Phantom power? I tried it with a Boya by-hm100. I think the adapter I bought from Osmo is faulty. I have bought two of them. ;(
Brett...
Thanks for an excellent video comparing mics for the Osmo Pocket...very professionally done!

Thanks for this video. I am just starting with this kind of setup. And I bought VXR10
exactly this model, but I am surprised that it massively underperforms with DJI OSMO Pocket.
@@brettgaramella Thanks, Man, I will try it out in less distance first.

can someone let me know what microphone is good for DJI osmo microphone that is good for 4k walking, that doesnt capture breathing but just street noise? or is their a DJI osmo new that takes out breathing when walking with it outside, cause im having some trouble with it. or is there any camera that takes out breathing noise when walking, let me know thanks for the help for anyone that knows.
I'll stick with the x3000r. Mic adapters are garbage and break very easily. I keep looking for a new 4k 60fps camera, but it must have a mic port and external charging to be long term useful.
Hello!
I have a question, can you use the 3,5 adabter with wireless module?
Did you ever find out?
@@maxim9875 Unfortunately no
Hey Brett do you or any one else know of a way to LIVE MONITOR audio with a head set while recording with the DJI OSMO ?
To my ears, the Movo VXR 3000 is the best. By the way, this a stereo mic. I have no idea if the Osmo is able to record stereo audio. I was never a friend of mono recording.
However, I can´t find it over here in Europe.
@@brettgaramella How should I change a Mono Audio into Stereo in post? You can always work with what you already have. If you don´t have it, you can´t work with it :-)
There is no audio information from left to right if there is nothing to record it that way.
@@brettgaramella If the DJI Osmo does not record in Stereo on the spot, it would be better to use something like a Zoom H1 in addition and synchronize later with the footage in post.
I know that that in 2019 some people have no idea what Stereo is, anyway:-)
Great video!👍
Great comparison 👍 I know witch one I want now 🙂
Great presentation and very helpful information. Thanks!
Nice video very informative! I should start my daily vlogs using this mics! But i like both movo and boya but the most tempting to me is boya! It sounds clear! Thanks for your vid

Excellent review, Thank you.

@@brettgaramella yep if you spot one let me know please thanks

Can u use this mike with the adapter on your macbook pro 2016-1018?
Voice over on videos. I’m thinking to use it as a mike on taking videos and voice over on videos to save money.
Brett Garamella good idea! Thanks bro!
Thank you for the video.
Great video/mic comparison!
Wondering if they are all "ripoffs" of the Rode VideoMic. At least they look pretty much the same :D Thanks for the video anyway!
