USB-C to 3.5mm Mic Adapters - DJI Osmo Action 3 & Action 4 Owners watch THIS for better audio!

  • There is so much confusion around the DJI Osmo Action 3 and how to connect an external 3.5mm microphone. Some people suggest cheap USB-C to TRRS adapters while others insist using a TRS adapter. But which cable really provides the best audio quality when connecting a mic to your Action 3? And why does TRRS / TRS even matter? Watch this video to find out!
    DISCLAIMER: The Digital/ Analog TRS/TRRS concept can take A LOT longer than 5 minutes to fully understand. This video is intended for other DJI Action 3 Owners who simply want to know which USB-C to 3.5mm adapter they should buy for their mic.
    If you're microphone has a TRRS connector, I would suggest a TRRS to TRS Adapter (like the RODE SC3) and then into a BOYA BY-K4.

    Very well explained difference between TRS and TRRS. I bought DJI Osmo 4 and I'm looking for a good setup for motovlogging. Generally, the sound of the engine means more to me than my speech, but for now, I don't have a clear idea of how to do it without having a hundred cables and accessories. First, I'll look for the Osmo Action 3.5mm Audio Adapter, which I think is designed for motorcyclists. As for recording two separate audio channels, I'll have to figure that out later.

I saw over on B&H that Sennheiser actually has a locking usb-c to 3.5 cable specifically for the little MKE mics - they really should have included this in their kit; it's called the Sennheiser CL 35 USB-C Locking 3.5mm -it's the same blue coil cable - high quality with locking ring.

      @@WayneRECs I agree the price is a little steep at $30 for Sennheiser vs. $19 for Boya dongle. but for me, it was worth an extra $11 to get a locking connector, coiled cord, and elimination of another dongle. Hi, with the Boya adapters being out of stock for many of us, after watching this video, I can say that the Saramonic SR-C2003 definitely works. I have done a video showing my new setup in a motovlogging situation. I had to put an in line volume control to soften the the mic’s output, as the audio was heavily distorted at speeds over 45mph. Wayne mentioned, there might be a future update, which would rectify this, I do hope he is right.

    • @gigihanmandarin
      @gigihanmandarin ปีที่แล้ว

      Distortion is due to wind noise. You need to find a position for the mic where the wind noise does not bother the audio (try the cutout area for bluetooth earpiece), or switch to a full face helmet with better wind resistance.

    @Wayne RECs - do you know of a way to get replacement USB-C cover/door for the Action 3?
    The door either falls off or I have to remove the cover/door to connect the USB-C cable. I contacted DJI but the tech wasn't familiar with the cover/door and told me that since I didn't have the part number he couldn't find it. I'm wondering if the cover/door from the Action 2 would fit - but all the suppliers I could find seem to be non-USA. I got the impression that the cover/door for Action 2 was not allowed to be sold in the USA for some reason.
    Let me know if you know the history for the Action 2 cover/door and if it might be usable on Action 3. I'm sure I will eventually lose the Action 3 cover/door and will need a backup.

    Thx for the video. Just picked up an Action 4. So, the adapter and the mic cable have to be TRS yes? You can't use a TRRS adapter with a TRS mic cable because of the ADC circuitry in the adapter. But, can you use a TRS Boya adapter with a trrs mic cable? Also, I have several lav mics that are TRS, is there a way to use these with my USB-C iPad? Cheers.

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your questions! While I can't speak to ipad use, you actually can use a lav mic that has a TRRS male end. You would need (yet) another adapter like a RODE SC3 which would turn your TRRS mic into a TRS mic and then connect that to a BOYA BY-K4 adapter. Even though inexpensive USB-C headphone adapters are meant for TRRS cables, you're right in that they are not designed for TRRS mics. It's can be confusing as it seems like matching up like connectors should work, but the internal circuitry and the physical metal connections (of TRRS plugs & jacks) don't necessarily match.

    Thanks for this very useful video! Would you have any recommendation which mic I would need for the following environment: I want to record within sports cars a very native sound of the noises (especially of course engine and exhaust noises). So I assume it should be omnidirectional? But I should also be capable of handling loud noises? And "of course" I don't want to pay too much 😉

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for your comment! For something like your situation, I'd recommend you start with considering recording your audio in 32-bit float (as opposed to 24-bit or 16-bit). 32-bit float will give you the ability to record a normal environment and also extremely loud (or sudden or unexpectedly loud) sounds (like engine and exhaust noise).
      With regards to mics, you'd likely want to prioritize one with a higher SPL (sound pressure level) to accommodate those louder sounds. While an omnidirectional pattern seems ideal, depending on how you're shooting your video in the car (camera placement) and where you are mounting your microphone, something like a stereo mic could give you some nice directional sounds.
      Factoring overall cost, the new Zoom M3 MicTrak might be your best option. It is a 32-bit float recorder with a built in mic that can be switched between a mono pattern to a wide stereo recording (and comes in at $200 USD). While mine is en route, I do plan on making some videos about it after a bit of testing.

    Okay.....this isn't quite related to the same thing as your video but maybe you still have some good advice for me. I just bought a 3.5 mic that came with two tiny cords (one trs to trs and one trs to trrs depending on which one you plan to use). I have to buy and extension cable to plug it into my headphone jack on my laptop (unless you prefer another method/adapter for plugging it in). My question however is should I buy a trs extension cable for the one or a trrs extension for the other. Do you think there is difference in the sound quality for either of those?

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Beau! It really depends on what kind of 3.5mm jack is in your laptop. If your laptop only has a single 3.5mm jack, then it's typically a TRRS. But on older PCs for example, they used to have 2 jacks (sometimes green and red) which were TRS (green for headphones & red for mics). Newer PCs stopped color coding them but may have a mic symbol or a headphone/mic symbol to connotate what the jack is.
      Sound quality isn't the big factor here, it would be getting the right cable to make the proper physical connections to transmit the full audio signal. Hope this helps!

  • @GrimReaperEntertainment1
    @GrimReaperEntertainment1 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey! You can definitely use a cable like the BOYA BY-K2 (male TRS) but the only issue can be the cable length. Depending on where your mic is mounted, the BY-K2 might not be long enough.

    • @GrimReaperEntertainment1

      @Wayne RECs Thank you. That makes sense, too. I forgot about the mic placement and usb c connection distance.

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With a mirror less or DSLR, distance is most likely not an issue. But because the Action 3 is soooo wide, depending on the mic design, mounting it can get pretty far away from the USBC port if you want to keep it out of the frame. But the BY-K2 is longer in length than the BY-K4.

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, I saw your comments! The BY-K4 adapter runs pretty hot. It's well suited for on camera mics that will be a little bit away from your subject or even lavs clipped on the chest. With close mic'ing a lav in a helmet for motovlogging, you have a few options with the Aciton 3. You can buy the official DJI Audio Adapter, which while intended specifically for the Action 4, does work with limited functionality with the OA3. This adapter is designed to provide less gain when motovlogging and as such, allows for less chance of distortion when close mic'ed.
      Or you can look for a lav mic with a lower sensitivity. I like the Sennheiser XS lav which is a USB-C lav that has a lower gain than using a BY-K4 adapter.
      Likely the reason your referenced creator doesn't have issues is because the Action 4 has a built-in limiter as well as lower gain settings which I think were specifically intended for moto use.

    • @WayneRECs

      Yep, when the Action 3 has a stereo mic connected and is set to record in Stereo, it will record two separate channels. So in the case of the MOVO DoubleMic UC or a Deity D4 Duo, when the mics are set appropriately, the front mic will be recorded in the L channel and the Rear mic in the R channel.

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      An USB-C to TRS adapter like the BOYA BY-K4 will properly accept your Sony ECM LV1's stereo signal (as the BY-K4 is a stereo adapter). But you will also need to make sure the Action 4 is set to Stereo Mode under the channel option of the Mic settings when PRO mode is enabled. If the Action 4 is set to Mono mode, it will combine the L/R signals of your mic into both audio channels of the recording.
      Hope this helps!

    I installed the Mimo app to my 1 y.o. samsung galaxy a52s 5 but it won't connect to the camera. Since you can't download firmware from DJI anymore I can't update the camera. Oh well, the GoPro 11 is only $10 more right now.
    I gotta admit, I'm a little disappointed.

      I got the DJI Action 3 all packed up, then decided to try one more thing. At this point, I had already used my 5 chances to "activate" it and couldn't get past that screen anymore.
      My phone is on Android 13, but my wife's identical Samsung Galaxy A52s is still on 12. I installed the DJI Mimo app on her phone and finally managed to get it recognized and connected. I went through the setup and downloaded the firmware update. And..... now it also connects to my phone.
      As it turns out, the app is fussy about Android 13 on many phones, but the new firmware fixes that. It's quite a catch 22. If they still allowed downloading new firmware, people wouldn't have the problem.
      A side note, it wouldn't connect to my old LG 20 with Android 8.
      Now I'll give the Action 3 a chance before returning it.

I have an Osmo Pocket 2 and had purchased the DJI USB-C to 3.5mm Pocket Adapter, which proved to only be compatible with the Pocket series and not the Action series. No clue why that would be...but hope others don't make the same mistake and buy the DJI product hoping that works. Was nearly about to purchase the new DJI adapter for the Action series USB-C to 3.5mm, albeit the design is sweet and square shaped sitting on the side of the Action 4, it is 4 times the price as the Boya adapter. Interestingly enough, the wireless mic I am trying to use is the Boya wireless mic system, but did not know about this Boya adapter. Just ordered it and should arrive tomorrow, hopefully, as our trip is this weekend. Will post a confirmation that this adapter functions with the Action 4 & Boya wireless mics. Cheers!

Even though GoPros have a USB-C port, they are not enabled to accept USB mics or generic adapters. As is the case, GoPro makes you buy their proprietary MediaMods or their 3.5mm adapter dongle/brick. This is actually the primary reason I bought the Action 3 over the Hero 11.

    USB-C spec natively supports analog audio. So, there is no need in a converter "inside a cable". I'd say it depends more on cable quality and whether it supports transmission of analog audio from/to USB-C. Normally, a device that supports smart USB-C with analog audio has all the required converters and just need for the cable to deliver the analog audio to USB-C.

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Michael! Thanks for your comment! While USB-C can deliver analog audio, I don't think the Action 3 has the capability to accept and convert it via the USB-C port. Even though USB-C was meant to make everything easier and universal, there is so much diverse functionality that it can be super confusing (& frustrating). I personally think that digital audio via USB-C is the future (almost forced by phone manufacturers) and that eventually camera manufacturers will jump on board, much like DJI has done.

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for your comment! To answer your questions:
      1) There is a wide variety of success when using TRRS to USB-C and/or TRS to TRRS adapters or any variations on these. A lot depends on the design of the 3.5mm to USB-C adapter. If it's a mic adapter, I've successfully used a TRRS mic into a TRRS to TRS adapter into the BY-K4. However, using some kind of TRRS to USB-C adapter instead, may not transmit the full audio signal. I think that answers your question?
      2) While I like the VideoMic GO II, if you're looking to invest ~$100 USD, I'd seriously look at the new Deity V-Mic D4. It retails at $99 and has a USB-C output & a gain knob on the mic for more control. It also comes with better wind protection. Check out this video for my experience with it: th-cam.com/video/I28Kq0k1-ZQ/w-d-xo.html
      Personally, when it comes to how the Action 3 handles audio, I've discovered you're much better off using a mic that has some kind of gain control as the Action 3's gain seems to be more of a digital volume control than and analog gain control.

    The aftermath 4 months after...
    I did buy a Boya BY-K4 after watching your video. Thanks for the recommendation. It works well.
    However, there's a "traditional" problem when I'm filming my phone or action cam like Sony RX0 with any external mic, the noise level rises drastically when I stop talking. It is obvious that these tiny electronic gadgets were trying to maintain the gain level by "compensating" the silence continuously. This didn't happen when I was using the internal mic of my cellphone.
    And yesterday I got my Saramonic SR-EA2U, which is a simple USB Type-C audio for phones. The sound quality is just as good. Yet there's no such sharp increase of noise level in the silent part of recording. This reminds me of you saying digital input can be the future trend.
    I was just wondering... have you ever experienced such problem of higher noise level in silent parts of recording with external mic? For me, it's almost universal. This still happened even when I connect the Rodecaster Pro II with Sony ZV-1 (not as serious as in other cases). Of course, I know to switch off the auto-level functionality of these devices. Yet that keeps bugging me somehow. Digital input could be really better in this respect.
