Thank you. A brilliant demonstration of how this all works. I am looking at the 991 (non A) but late 2016 model. Your demonstration was slow enough for me to get my head around all of the menu items and other things you showed. I think I am now sold on this radio. My other option was the 450 D, but I like, now I see how it works :) :) Again, thank you.
What an absolute dream of a rig, I have just got the FT-991and I couldn't be happier, after testing it against the 7300, the 7300 lost in every way possible. Thanks Yaesu and I don't really need the 'A' so will stay with the FT-991. '73.
I wished you'd spent more time on the spectrum display. This is the unique feature of some of these new radios, and the ability to spot and tune right to a signal is something many of us are not used to. Wandering through the menu's is really not all that interesting, frankly. Thanks.
Thanks for this overview, Tom. I just got a 991A and and am eagerly waiting for it. It's a big step up for me from the 450D, though it's been a trooper for a long time. SHow us more when you can! Mark - KB7OOM, Keizer, OR
Glare on the scope made seeing the details you were pointing out unreadable. Thanks for the video. Also sharing the audio from the rig would have been great.
Excellent short tutorial! One suggestion, if I may. Video camera was either too close, angled slightly off, not quite focused, or some combination of these factors. Made seeing the various labels on the keys difficult and the various key/knob functions on the screen could not be seen when you were demonstrating adjustments. Otherwise, a very good video. Please do a more detailed in-depth video on the 991A. Your explanations were easy to follow. Thanks again!
Nice video. Thanks. Yaesu always had a funky way to get to the 60 meter frequencies. So what happens when the FCC changes the frequency range for 60 meters? Looks like a neat radio for portable operations. One radio do all ! Barry, KU3X
hi there quick question does the ft 991a has 11 metes i mean i like to buy it so i can chat with my buddies drivers in Brasil the frequency is 25855 -111and 24545 -242 negative let me know if u can thank you walter
You can only do 11 meters on the Yaesu 991a if the MARS mod has been done. It's a matter of taking the radio apart and running a soldering iron over two points to bridge the solder joint. That's all there is to doing a MARS mod. W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee
I have both the ts2000 and the new 991a. both cover the same bands up thru uhf. If you work satellite, the ts2000 has a birdy right on a birds freq making it unusable on that bird. the ts2000 does not have a spectrum scope. The ts2000 is a number of years old whereas the 991a is a newer radio. Having both, i kind of like having the 991a for a change. de w5kub
@@t4thfavor1212 Also the Kenwood is full duplex on both VFO at the same time. You can receive on VFO B while transmitting on VFO A. This is necessary for most Satellite communications.
What has been your experience with the delta loop compared with your dipole? Is it oriented vertically or horizontally? How do you feed it--where do you feed it--do you use an external tuner?
@@w5kub I use an off center fed dipole (long wire with Unun 4:1) for 80 - 10 meters. I have a Cushcraft Ringo Ranger II with the ground radials and that 2 meter antenna is a REAL listener/talker. I have a copper J-pole for 2 meters/70 centimeters and use an Antron 99 for 10/11 meters. I got my 991a with the MARS mod so I can use it on 11 meters. Now all I need is a 6 meter antenna. remingtonh mate the 7300 is only a hf rig this is a multi band transeiver total diffrent to a hf only rig if your intrested in only hf operations then sure but if your doing multiple band operations the 991a is the way to go ow if you own a 7300 then sorry to say you should of waited as the new 7300 is coming out soon which will kill the old one cheers mate 73s from vk3 land xx
Where do you hear that Icom is releasing a new version of the IC-7300? Could you link your source? Since the 7300 is a SDR, all you need to do is update the firmware, and boom, new radio!
I sold it with half price. I have a lot of yeasus and this one is the worst I had. Tuner is not working corectly ( it increase SWR!!!), I lost my power transistors - servis don't know what is the issues with those TRXes, bias set up is done wrongly at factory. I thiught it's impossible to destroy end transistors at ham trx. With 991 ut's easy. Menu is complicated and touch screen not COMPLETE used like at IC 7300. Just 100 memories (even predecessor has 200), impossible to stor satelite shift via pc memory managment. Operating VFO is always A - why it's not changing? CAT is working much slower than at 15 years ild FT857. SHAME FOR YEASU.

I am tossing up between the FT 450 D and the 991 (not A), but late model 991. How have you found the 991A?
Didn't realize that radio came out soo long ago.....I want one.
Glare on the scope made seeing the details you were pointing out unreadable. Thanks for the video. Also sharing the audio from the rig would have been great.
thanks for the great review very helpfull will be purchasing on soon 73s keep the great vids coming
Very cool
Merci beaucoup l'Ami !
Tom, Thanks for the excelent review,.. but the video looks blurry, check your cam..YV5EMG

Thank you for the review. How does the FT-991A operate on FUSION

great review very nice thank you

you never got into, the C4FM and the Wires X in the radio . 73
Thanks for the review, but i wish you would have also addressed the cw mode.
I guess I'm quite randomly asking but do anybody know a good site to watch newly released movies online?
@Valentin Leonel try Flixzone. Just google for it =)
@Joziah Kamdyn Yea, have been using flixzone for years myself =)
@Joziah Kamdyn thanks, I went there and it seems like a nice service :) Appreciate it!!
@Valentin Leonel glad I could help =)
WOW, You have the same intro graphics as my channel...
Lol! Didn't realized it until I scrolled thru the comments!
Your channel sucks
Mine won’t transmit to my local repeater on 145.290. It will only ka chunk it. No voice goes though. Any ideas?
eham reviews of the 991 where not to good. Several had problems. I hope the "A" version is better. I like the looks and features of the radio.
hopefully you dont get a lemon out of the box i guess cheers 73s
Does the Yaesu FT-991A have a built in ATU?
yes it does.
Yes .

Why in the world Yeasu did not full duplex module in this radio is beyond imagination. That would make it a all in one transceiver. Shame !
Thanks, but you need a new camera. Video of radio is out of focus and blooming. Scope and waterfall looks completely white.
Nit Pick, Nit Pick. Don't you just love people that nit pick !
I've got myself down to this 991A or a Kenwood TS-2000, what does everyone think?

w5kub good, I think I got it figured out now. only thing I'll miss is the crossband repeater function on the kenwood.

I ended up going with a ic-7300 :) I didn’t need vhf/uhf as bad as I thought I did.
what antenna or antennas are you using for the 991a?
various antennas. I have fan diipole for 80-40-20 I have delta loop that covers 40-6 meters, I have inverted v"s for 15, 17 meters.

How can you xmit on 9.330? Freebanding?
we send our audio to a licensed international shortwave station wbcq and they broadcast it
wish i can win one

He's talking about the IC-7610, which is not a new 7300 or a replacement, a different radio with different features (and over twice as expensive).
