    Always amazing to see how much junk settles out of the fuel. The "blow" method is the best test there is. Tasty, too!

    I just bought this Vespa. Mines a 2003 w 1,400 miles on it and is pretty flawless. However, as much as I want to ride it, I see that the previous owner has a bottle of Walmart 2 stroke oil in the underseat so I'm not going to ride it until I have the proper Motul, Yamalube etc.. 2 stroke oil to run in it. Nevertheless, I loved your video on the small improvements to make on this bike to pep it up (ie. delimit the variation, carb plate etc.). I'll be doing these as well although I'm not sure yet of the proper jet size. The other thing that distresses me about this scooter it the autoluber. I think mine's fine, but I'd really prefer to just mix the gas/oil myself instead of relying upon the auto-oiler. Thanks for your hard work and passion!

    Martin, I believe you're correct. That junk in the bottom of your catch bottle looked like water and rust. The carburetor will probably have some corrosion built up in the small orifices. The flat spot could also be attributed to a stretched diaphragm. Best of luck and we'll be watching. Thank you.

    You have done a brilliant job on this, she sounds great 👍. Just running a bit rich, needs a tweak, slightly smaller jet (58) or even try the original jet and a good ride I reckon. Check for vacuum leaks but I think you have covered that already. She's nearly there. The brass plate you removed from the carb isn't actually a restriction, on other scooters they are but not these, mine ran fine without it but you might wanna try putting it back in just to see, it's free so worth doing. Can't see the bike being lean with the 60 jet on a standard engine, unless of course you have a major air leak. I have a brand new rubber inlet manifold here, check yours, if it's cracked you are welcome to mine for free.
    So, check for air leaks (inlet manifold cracks, carb gaskets, vacuum pipes)
    Put in standard jet or high 50's, consider putting brass plate back in.
    Strip carb again, check jets and gaskets.
    Go for a good ride.

    It sounds like you have a vacuum leak, which makes the engine run too lean. Or your mixture needs adjusting. I’ve had this problem before, vent in the fuel cap could be blocked. You’ve done Great job Martin, I’m sure you’ll work this minor problem out. 👍

  • @TheMrWoodsman
    @TheMrWoodsman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would try putting the original jets back in the carb to see if the problem is still there! It’s all a process of elimination! Good luck and please keep us posted.

    Hi Martin. Picked this up of a piaggio forum might help: sounds like incorrect air screw setting if it's at the very bottom if it's around quarter it's the slide. I would start by taking the carb and carb box off check all jets are correct and set right and not worn(slide) put it all back together with new gaskets. If it's still the same after that check the piston rings they may need replacing, poor compression can cause hesitation on throttle response.

    I’ve already done this for a different problem I have the et4 it was flooding through fuel through the engine into the crank case it now runs out of fuel with just less than half a tank as I said in a earlier comment going to fit a external fuel tap and filter as far as I can tell that valve just shuts the fuel off when the engine is off will let you know weather this solves it as far as the flat spot you have that could be the Excelerator pump look for a little valve on the bottom of the carb that is opened when the throttle is opened great videos by the way

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fuel flowing into the crank cases can happen if the fuel is finding its way past the float needle into the inlet. Can be the float height or needle valve letting by.

    I've had the same issue, all be it with a chinese GY6 scooter. In the end I just replaced the carb (was all rusty and dry cracked gasket, may have been a vacuum leak in the carb) and intake manifold as these chinese parts are cheap as hell anyway. That fixed it for me. As for the flat spot. You may want to try filling it up with higher octane gas. Not sure what they have in britain, but I fill it up with 98 instead or 95 and it makes a difference at full throttle.

    What a bummer with the way its running are you certain that you got all of the sedimate out of the tank ? You could try running an auxiliary tank from like a lawnmower or even a soda bottle that is clear that you can see how it is using the gas ? If there is a chance that its gotten any thing left in the original tank it could act that way and the other thing is try going down a couple of sizes with the jet or maybe up some more. There is a lot more that the engine could be needing. When you figure out how much you opened up with the modifications you made. On mine I jumped up 3 sized just from drilling out the exhaust pipe. Good luck I wish you the best !

    • @retrorestore

      It could be a vacuum problem do you have a vacuum gauge that you could put it where you could see it while riding it ? That would be a simple test especially where you have to feather it into going faster ! Best wishes

    @stevehill4615 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, it's not clear in your video if the flatspot is present from the start or if it occurs after a period of running, if it's the later could it be the tank breather isn't working causing a vacuum in the tank after a period of fuel consumption (easy to check --- leave the fuel cap loose, see if fault remains), also are you sure the vacuum tap is working correctly, I always thought it shouldn't be possible to blow through the tap (pipe on the side) unless a vacuum was applied (pipe on the bottom) as was the case with the old tap.
    Tank breather suggestion is not a common fault but neither is it unknown (breather can be in the tank cap or separate on the tank usually with a one-way valve fitted), if you could upload another video of the conditions and symptoms that would help narrow the possibilities of the fault.

    With all the sludge in the petrol perhaps the jets are clogged, I know when I’ve worked on old engines that have had stale fuel stripping and cleaning the carb and blowing the jets through ( in the old days just like you did with the fuel filter but it made you go bluer in the face!) usually got things going again

  • @Menditman2014
    @Menditman2014 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi it's sort of an off the cuff response, but couldn't you change the carb back to standard then try it. You would then know if it was the actual carb at fault or the changes you made. Anyway I have hassles like that all the time repairing mowers, I blame a lot on the new Chinese carbs I buy, some seem fine some are a pain in the a**e. You'll get there in the end🙂👍

    Just a thought, but as you have de-restricted it, perhaps the fuel pump arrangement can't keep up with demand.

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no fuel pump Benedict, it' is a vacuum operated gravity system and I think this is the problem.

    • @BensWorkshop
      @BensWorkshop 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The vacuum operated gravity system has a delivery rate like a pump. Your jet is larger so it's possible that it is using more fuel than can be delivered by the fuel system. You could test that by either re restricting it or just driving it at its design speed and see if it's OK then.

  • @lzr32
    @lzr32 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    leaks from the vac hose or where it attatches to engine cases .
    the needle with rubber tip that attatches to plastic float could be jamming or not set to let enough fuel in before the float shuts the inlet back off.

    Now Mate, I know you'll sort it. However you might??? have 2 problems. A bit of fuel starvation but also a weak spark. This has bit me in the arse a couple of times in the past. 100 Kwak in 93. Seemed like a fuel problem, ended up needing a new coil. It's just you said it has a flat spot, spark breaking down under load. Bit of a ride, stops when the coil gets hot. Few minutes later it cools down and fires up again.

    • @retrorestore
