    Hi Martin gad you stored it out sounds like its running great.
    A classic mistake which i still do myself is changing more than one thing it could be and causing another problem.
    Signs of cutting out after full throttle at tick over fuel in the bowl not high enough to reach idle jet but i'm a bit late watching your video.
    These small engines are so sensitive to changes spark plug type exact gap ,air filter and airflow after re jet , belt changes and springs will bog as gearing changes at wrong engine rpm.
    The biggest lesson i have learnt is don't always think because its new its not faulty, I had a brand new carb and still had problems changed everything coilpack, stator and flywheel, pickup. reedblock and reeds all the expensive stuff only to find it was the new carb that was faulty.
    Keep those video's coming love watching them.

    Nice job thinking your way through a frustrating problem. Had the same problem with a moped I worked on for my sister-in-law. To start with someone had the thing hydro-locked with oil pouring out of the fill hole when it was not running! I actually got it started after fixing that problem and messed around with it for a couple of days and finally got it up to 45 mph five times in a row without it bogging down and was doing back flips when I got back home! When I gave it back to her I told her I wouldn't be disappointed if I never saw it again! So far she has left me alone. I guess she got the message! Frustrating little things.

      Too much oil in the crankcase won't allow the engine to turn over. Can also happen if you have a carb that is malfunctioning and dumping fuel into the crankcase. The fluid pressure "locks" the piston in place thus no start. It can also happen with coolant in a liquid cooled engine.

    • @ionutgur
      @ionutgur 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hy Paul, what do you mean by having the air box back on correctly? The carburetor should work fine even if it s disconected from it, shouldn t it?

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Air leaks can lead to a weak fuel/air mixture which in turn will affect performance and could potentially damage the engine if running too lean.

    • @ionutgur
      @ionutgur 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to know Martin, thank you, i m trying to start my scooter while having the air filter disconected ( i have a vespa sprint 4 stroke, new model 2014 -2016); what do you advise me to do? Also i have vacuum from the engine pulling the fuel into the carburetor; if i take the carburetor out i ll find fuel in the constant level chamber but the intake manifold is dry as bone

    After working on this kind of bike for some years it's always something simple. I always started with a 72 jet then worked my way up until it ran smooth not all the little piaggio t2 scooters ran on the same jet size as all had slight differences in performance. THE nrg always seemed very responsive after derestricted especially the water cooled ones

  • @MowerMan
    @MowerMan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Martin I had this on my yamaha jog and although it felt like fuel restrictions it was because it was getting too much air through the air filter. It really felt like fuel restrictions and the petcock had a diaphragm in which was worn out. However once it started it ran fine.

    glad you got the fuel starvation sorted --- i think you might get a little more performance by reducing the main jet to a 58 (i was told as a rule of thumb to add 5 to the main jet size when de-restricting ), a 56 mentioned elsewhere may work but with the aftermarket exhaust (is it a geovinci?) might make it a touch lean at full throttle ----- if you want to test if slight leaning out of the mixture improves the performance, try dropping the needle 2 notches (assuming a 5 notch needle) which will give an approximation of what the 58 main jet will be like.

    Well done mart .like a little terrier when you get the bit between your teeth.i knew you couldnt leave it without trying the big jet again .im supprised tho when you sussed out the vacume pipes you didnt try it first to see if it made any difference. So was it running on the fuel thru the vacume side of the carb rather then the fuel bowl then flooding out ?

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Pete, there must have been an issue with that original vacuum unit as well as a dirty carb.

  • @stephengardin2423
    @stephengardin2423 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just for the heck of it, you should try the 65 jet you first had to put in the carburetor. That should really spice her up. Thank you, Martin.

    • @stephengardin2423
      @stephengardin2423 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct. The problem will need to be sussed out. A bigger jet again will allow for finer tuning because the volume of air has increased by over100%. The spark plug looks very nice as far as colour is concerned. I don't recommend chopping the side post of the spark plug off. Yes, it will increase igniting strength however, it will dramatically decrease long-term reliability. For racing purposes, it works out great because a race isn't that long and sparks are free to the teams generally and their ignition systems are many times more powerful than what is found on the street. ;)

  • @dodgydruid
    @dodgydruid 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally would have left the bigger jet in place and run the engine around a bit to see if that improved the plug colour, as when you had fuel in it in between the stops, the engine sounded quite sweet to my ear and very lively. The problem with rerestricting it with the bigger exhaust is the air-fuel pump balance will be inequal and I fear you will have lumpy performance.

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No lumpy performance Ian, it runs as sweet as a nut with no flat spots. I drove it 20 miles and it runs great. It has the bigger jet in and the restriction plate out as I said at the end of the vid.

    hello martin, be lurking around for some time enjoy your vids, hope this makes sense, if the re-stricter plate was removed the idle jet [set to 1,1/2, turns out from closed would be set with the plate installed], would need to be adjusted maybe 1/2 turn or one complete turn, the carb could be running lean as the throttle is the next step in the carbs operation[main jet] ? when riding the scooter, hope this makes sense because im writing this even im confused, cheers alan

  • @Taliesin6

    if the choke is stuck in extended position like mine was, you can test it by losening up the 2 screws holding it down and pulling it up a bit and see if it runs better, in my case the et2 wouldn't start at all until i almost pulled the choke out.

    The sprigs in the auto pulley system are weak. Not allowing the engine to rev up before increasing ratio.

    Do you think the last person sold it because of the bogging down problem. I started to cringe when you wore a tee shirt on the bike. I've never seen a ultrasonic cleaner before and thought you was going to make chips.

    You forgot to remove the emulsion tube (needle jet), on the carb. Put in lighter weights, in the variator, or remove 2 or 3 of them, to keep the revs up.

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It runs great, no need to play about with the variator, the owner is 54 not 17 bud.

    I can't understand how it managed to run at all with the fuel and vacuum lines reversed!

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there was a problem with the vacuum unit. I have seen people drill them out before where fuel flows through the unit so you never know what previous owners have done.

    • @dereknicholson4831
      @dereknicholson4831 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole thing appears to be nothing more than a vacuum operated petcock. Unnecessary complication to protect those who can't remember to open one from themselves. I prefer the KISS Principal! :)

    Looks to me like that stupid airflow restrictor is the main problem? That really hacks me off, they put all these speed restrictors in the system, for no good reason. As long as the rider is a careful driver, wears a helmet and gloves etc., why restrict the tiny mopeds and motor scooters to less than those tiny motors can do? It really angers me.

      Hy Daniel, how can the exhaust influence the proper functioning of the engine

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a 2 stroke engine,the pressure in the exhaust is an important tuning factor to clear the exhaust gasses so the engine can breath freely, hence Dan's comment.
