This song was more than just a performance for him. It’s not just a song to go to sleep to at night. It was a total rejection of Francisco Franco and everything he stood for in Spain. It was a statement against fascism and for freedom. There’s really only one cellist I rank up there with Pau and that’s Janos Starker. They were both in different ways refugees from the forces of fascism and they used their music as a force for good against these injustices to humanity, and that’s why their music will always be so much better than people who simply play to entertain others.
This is WHY TH-cam is important and I am blessed to live in the 21st Century. I can 'trip upon' the path of Pau Casals. So beautiful. So profound. 💝🎶 '
So wonderful!!! I met Casals at a concert he conducted when I was in my teens. I ran up on to the stage after the concert in the hopes of meeting him. As I was trying to get my teacher David Soyer's attention in the dressing room, I looked behind me and there sat Casals in a big armchair looking at me. I ran into his arms and burst into tears. He held my face in his hands and smiled and shook his head for me not to cry. I was too overwhelmed to speak and ran out as quickly as I had run in. It was an very emotional experience for me. Many years later, my friend Jackie Du Pre told me her husband Danny had been with Casals and apparently Casals spoke of the encounter. Jackie said "Was that you Christine?" I was amazed, laughed and said yes, it was. I had always wondered if the experience was emotional for him too. Thanks for posting! :)
This is a moving story, for there are many beautiful players, but there are few, that make me close my eyes ,head back, and blue out with shades of colors, people, places, and things,I remember. One of my all time favorites, thank you,Christine. To the great Casals, your heart still lives today with everyone.
Actually this posting interpolates an earlier performance, dating most likely to the 1950's when he was well into his mid-to-late 70's. His command in those early years of his "festivals" was simply astonishing. Only one other string player performed virtually unimpaired at so advanced an age: the violinist Nathan Milstein. The performance Casals gave it 95 is preserved on TH-cam but only the first part (with repeat) is shown. The last time he played the cello outside of his home was in Israel, only a few months before his death, where he played a movement from one of the Bach suites for Golda Maier. Available on TH-cam a part of a documentary I believe. (He still practiced every day, and began each day at the piano with one of t HR prelude and fugue sets from The Well- Tempered Clavier.)

I first heard his song about 40 years ago. on the radio. And I've heard of his Catalonia. Today, when I listen to the song I forgot while watching his video, tears well up in my eyes. I'm getting old and hearing old stories again. from seoul.
This is so special and amazing! I'm so glad people have uploaded so much of his work. He is my great great uncle. My great great grandfather Mariano Casals is his brother. I wish I had lived when they did and could have known them. What a God given gift. To pour out his soul through music. Just Heavenly!
@fferna67 I read his biography when I was about 12. My mother gave it to me as a gift, together with the 6 Bach suites for solo cello. Since then he became the idol of my youth!
I am from El Vendrell, and as far as we know, the master had two brothers only : Enric Casals and Artur Casals... No Mariano's involved in his family... Who are you?
This melody played by this man, and his words accompanying it, reduce me to tears each time I hear it and send me to my 'cello to improve my playing. Wonderful. He was a gift to the world.
His voice had all the passion and emotion of his playing. This was not only a profound musician but a fine example of a human being. When he cried out ' peace peace peace' i nearly choked with emotion and then came the sound of his cello. Ive heard all the greats but this man was probably the most remarkable of all both as musician and human being. I think if the cello could speak words it would be the voice of pablo casals just as his soul shone through the cello. Ive never experienced such a perfect marriage between a person and a musical instrument. I deeply admire heifetz but this is a much deeper level of music. The only performer i would compare with the great composers.
You cannot refrain from crying when you hear this, more than 45 years after this was played. Even if the piece is based on an old folk song, Casals’ rendition is just so full of melancholy and solemnity. Thanks for posting those gems
Nunca lo olvida. Gracias Don Pablo. Lindos recuerdos en los años 60’s visitando el Festival Casals en el teatro de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Hermoso legado🕊🕊🕊
oh my... no words... it is so very lovely... i am grateful, too, that i learned of him... i will always keep him in mind... i wanted to like all the comments, but, whewww--- there are sooooo many!!! thank you sir, (though you are gone now) for this lovely gift of your playing for all to see and hear...
It's a shame people my age don't listen to this type of music anymore. I'm going to do a project about him that I have to present for my history class, so that even if they forget it, for a while more people will know his name.
Pau Casals is not the author of that work, do not get confused, he was a great cellist, he fought against Francoism and fascism that is not small, but the melody of anonymous author dates back to the Middle Ages, what Pau did was a transcription for the cello.
Christmas Eve and whilst making a playlist to help me relax and sleep I came across Pablo Casals and Song of the Birds. What a gift. I’ve listened to it on repeat non stop for the last couple of hours. Transcending everything else right now.
His legacy, his vocation, his discipline are a model to all youth. We must stand under values. He took very seriously performance. There is no excuses you must give more than 100%. You need to give it all and above period.
I BELIEVE THE PERFORMANCE WAS THAT OF VERDI'S "THE MASKED BALL:" CARUSO, BACK STAGE, BEFORE MAKING HIS ENTRANCE, A GIRL WHO WAS MAKING HER MET DEBUT, OBSERVED CARUSO SHAKING LIKE A LEAF, AND SHE ASKED HIM WHY. "YOU HAVE TO GO OUT THERE AND SING 100%. I HAVE TO GO OUT THERE AND SING 150%. I AM THE ONE ARTIST BEFORE THE PUBLIC WHO WILL NEVER BE FORGIVEN FOR THE SLIGHTEST FALLING OFF !" CARUSO AND CASALS WERE SERIOUS ARTISTS !
I can't tell any words.. just crying after hearing the voice of Casals. I feel deep sorrow, regret... If I pass upcoming examination for music teacher in high school I will play this video for my students. I know some music textbooks include the score of this song in my country. It's so precious and special video.
With this we can all rest in peace- at least the hope of it: the work, the play of it, are rooted in earth, and yet transcendental. The commentary of Casals, his words the very same.
It's nearly 14 and not 40 years! Impossible to understand 100%, but he played in public longer than until 1931. Make sense that he played until he was 80 years and from then on never for 14 years.. Thx for this video!

Almost 95 years old during this performance, less than 2 years before he passed away! This performance is so moving.

I'm sharing this in my Facebook wall today in memory of his death anniversary.
keeping researching him because he is a special man, maybe you have music in your blood and bones!
@fferna67
I read his biography when I was about 12.
My mother gave it to me as a gift,

beautiful. just... spectacular. my great great great uncle at his best... this song makes me cry
+Leaf Casals i hope his spirit continues...a genius soul
Leaf Casals,
such an honor to have an illustrious ancestor as Pau Casals.
Me too. I weep with joy.
It's called a piece
You wished he being your uncle... As said before he hadn't any brothers named Mariano... So stop making believe you are family. Stop lying!!
thank you for Pau Casals's real voice. This music makes me profound.
This melody played by this man, and his words accompanying it, reduce me to tears each time I hear it and send me to my 'cello to improve my playing. Wonderful. He was a gift to the world.
Now imagine if you were catalan and all your family had suffered the same fascist oppression as him...
i was just thinking of the same phrase...."he was a gift to the world"..
Casals was not only one of the most influential and respected cello players of all time. He was a man for eternity.
Every time I hear this peace played by Mr.Casals, my eys
Stay full of tears.I cannot controllthem. This music were composed
by a true God!
It’s a traditional annonymous catalan song
Wonderful compilation of our Spiritual Father, Pau Casals. Listen and remember and long for him!

My words. Thank you!
He is Pau Casals and not Pablo Casals. He is catalan and this is why he named Pau Casals (catalan name).
You cannot refrain from crying when you hear this, more than 45 years after this was played. Even if the piece is based on an old folk song, Casals’ rendition is just so full of melancholy and solemnity. Thanks for posting those gems

Shivering and almost crying right now
Sublime. Ouvir Casals, lendo Neruda e com o Picasso em fundo ...é o paraíso em ARTE !
Love him and love this song. So humble and so brilliant.
Actually saw him play in the late 50’s - early 60’s in Colorado. Magnificent, just a lone figure on a darkened stage!
Such a profound message! Very, very important today. Thank you very much!

True - but unimportant! The way Pablo Casals plays it, he makes it ethernal...
He is the perfect interpretator of an age old song
Christmas Eve and whilst making a playlist to help me relax and sleep I came across Pablo Casals and Song of the Birds. What a gift. I’ve listened to it on repeat non stop for the last couple of hours. Transcending everything else right now.

Incredible song incredible man!!!
stunning music and magical performance.
The greatest cellist of the 20th century, and certainly among the top 5 cellists to ever pick up a bow in human history, period.
I think of Pablo Casals as the greatest cellist, like I think of David Oistrakh as the greatest of the great violinists of all times...
so beautifull.....
