Some of the most terrifying moments I ever had in cars, were in my MR2 roadster hydroplaning on motorways and oversteering on roundabouts. These things are so much fun - just a basic 4 wheels and an engine.
I have a 2ZZ, God yes, when people in 4x4 are plowing through 1inch standing water and I'm holding on for dear life! I had a proper brown trousers incident on an appropriately named motorway 'slip road'. I was accelerating quickly but smoothly in damp conditions up to 70mph when I hit a slick bit of tarmac. The rear end snapped left and immediately I was in the next lane and heading for a bush. I somehow caught it and over corrected and it snapped back right almost as violently. It snapped once more back to the left and I was already thinking "this is it, I've run out of luck and talent, there's no way I'll catch the next one" but fourth time was the charm and I somehow found myself straight and level at 60mph and still on the road and lane. God knows what it must have looked like from the car behind me's perspective, heroic hopefully, comedic more likely. I stayed way below the speed limit for the rest of the drive and counted my blessings. That's the thing with grip, it sometimes feels like you have all of it until you suddenly none of it !

Judged by the speed at 8000rpm, this seems like C65 (6MT) from Japan/US spec MR-S (with 1ZZ), not the C60 or C64 that came with the 2ZZ... that explained why it dropped a lot of rpm. EDIT: Oh, the owner said it! It was indeed 1ZZ's 6MT! And the Toyota VTEC is VVTL-i.
I had to double check, I believe it's a 5-speed. it actually topped out in 4th where as with the C60 with stock output it will top out in 5th. This is the first time I've seen a video with a 2ZZ mated to the 1ZZ 5-Speed likely C59, it actually had somewhat better ratios than I thought because it was always my belief it would probably drop out of Lift in almost every gear but was only the case with 4th (and likely 5th).
There's definitely software to make the camshaft change over around 5500rpm, instead of the current 6200rpm. Nevertheless the 2ZZ's 6MT fits the powerband better of course. My 2ZZ-GE is Supercharged (from stock) which makes the cam switch less abrupt, but still noticeable.

Frankenstein motorworks does some cool bits for the mr2/mrs platforms. I'm not sure if the 2gr/2ar conversion is more affordable than a k series swap but it is another option. A turbo would also really wake this thing up. Either way, going forward from this is a big jump in mods cost. Sequential trans seems a bit overkill without working on giving it more guts first. Many are saying the 6-speed manual does wonders for it but the 5-speed would probably be perfectly fine with a turbo to make up for the lack of torque. @mgcharoudin mate the only issue with that setting was the gearbox. The guy has a great car on that configuration and if he swap the c56 gearbox with the good one c60/64 from celica or corolla you'll be talking of something else next time. I've got the same car, ssme engine, same suspension fully on uniball, bracing and almost everything you can add on that chassis, same RzR shifter but I have also the right gearbox and things changes drastically. If I come there with mine you'll be talking about low the spring load on bc coilover (4+6 kg), about seats (that are not performance oriented like that seats) and you'll be RIGHT Misha, because it's more a "street oriented car" BUT You'll not feel that lack of power before lift. I totally agree with you. Just another thing: that shifter is a masterpiece but has to be settled properly, it has longitudinal and transversal engage setting excursion + other settings about how much pressure you need for upshift/downshift I mean: once you set it properly for you if works like a charm. But your settings could not be the best for another driver. Anyway the thing is: until you don't get the right gearbox and the right setup on that car you can't be happier than that in the Nurburgring (and I see you already quite satisfied on that car) and 2zz is a great engine to be a 30yo 1.8L that revs to 8.5k rpm peak (stock + aftermarket ecu). Keep following and supporting you from Italy 🇮🇹 Ciao Misha 😉
Better to change vvtl-i to engage at 5500 rpm not 6500rpm and it will make much more sense. Unless owner only take car on track so gearing will help also, but its nice to have overdrive gear for cruising and cooling down engine.

I remember the same problem with the gearbox in the celica and the 1zz mr2, its where the Ep3 was way better
I used to own this car. Sans mods.
Great track toy. Another 50-60 hp would do wonders with the lap time
@14:50
Myself a mechanical neophyte, how would this be remedied in layman's terms?
Have you considered vulcan alpha making a street legal MR2 wing? There is currently no such thing on the matket.
Very cool lap misha, is a good car this MR2
My dream car in action with dream driver ❤️🔥
Been waiting to see him in an mr2
Great build just shorter ratios then much better n its VVTLi as other guy mentioned and tune to drop crossover to 5500 or 5200 would be cool as well. Mr2 ran well behind Porsche 🔥
Can you please start take timelaps and show that in movies? Should be really intressing to see differnt times on differnt cars 😀💪🏻
nice driving
Luv’n the MR2!!! 👍😊👊💥
Wouldn’t having a giant rear wing and no front splitter cause it to oversteer? Or is it better in this application.
Oversteer would be the rear swinging out, so the wing giving extra downforce should reduce this - once you reach a certain speed.
Man that thing looks like its constantly right on the edge of over rotating and ending you mid corner
Would a power fc help with the dropping out of vvtli? It helped a ton on my swapped spyder but i have a celica 6spd.
Overtake 11.18 🎉❤
That face at 7:32 = priceless lol
Keep following and supporting you from Italy 🇮🇹
Ciao Misha 😉
I like how you got the gearing in the end.
0:01 do I have insurance for that?
0:02 I can't believe I let this guy drive
0:04 whew, nevermind
biggest mod on these engies is to chnage the finial drive to keep in the power band
Better to change vvtl-i to engage at 5500 rpm not 6500rpm and it will make much more sense. Unless owner only take car on track so gearing will help also, but its nice to have overdrive gear for cruising and cooling down engine.
@@pilot554 iam sure they some times use a toyota saloon 6th gear and then drop the FD to keep the motorway gear
With more power it looks like it could be a very nice track car!
The power is fine but on a track like this yeah it´s not ideal.
Shorter gears will definitely help.
Isn’t this the engine in Toyota’s matrix XRS and in the lotus Elise but supercharged ??
Yes 👍
Dude looks like Luigi Mangione in that helmet
I Wuld love to See a lap in the Techno Spirit r MRS from hot version
0:32 Bro, it’s the first thing I noticed! We need to see the video about that Chinese plated car!
Any chassis re-enforcement in the front? These cars are kind of floppy in the front. Always curious what people are doing to alleviate the front-end flop. Overall, great build!
take out the frunk, put in a strut-brace.
@@mixalisstathis274you don't need to remove the frunk for a strut brace, just need to trim some of the plastics around it.
No reinforcement, just ARB and springs, did not feel the need of it
