Surviving Unexpected Winter Storm in My Van (Everything is BROKEN)

- This unexpected winter storm came through while I was traveling in my van and unfortunately, everything was broken. I had no heat, no water and I was miserably cold riding out this storm for 5 days until the ice melted and I could travel again. 👉 Get your FIXD OBD device for 67% off: www.storychasi...
There are many problems with taking a van into a winter storm when it's not four seasons. Living in a vehicle isn't always amazing, in this video, I'll show you the realities of van life. The majority of the days we experience near-freezing temperatures and I don't have heat or any running water. It broke during the last winter storm I presume, even though I drained the pipes. So no washing my hair in the sink, no washing dishes in the sink, and no heat to stay warm. I literally went to be at night in shirts and coats to stay warm with temps feeling like 17 degrees outside.
Winter camping isn't for everyone (not me for sure with this setup) and there are many problems living off grid. So this is how I survived during that unexpected winter storm while chaos ensued around me. But I did get to see my good friend Dani and we had, well, some very, very, very (did I say very?) good laughs!

This was entirely unexpected. It was supposed to be sunny and warm in Southern Texas on the coast, hence the reason I kept my plans and took off to meet my friend. 🤦🏻♀
This video was absolutely delightful, I love how you just roll with the punches.Sorry it was so cold and nasty. It was great that you had Dani there to share in your misery 😮. Prayers for warmer weather and sunshine ☀️ stay safe. 🙏🙏😊
Heres where a community comes in handy. They support each other.
You and Dani are so much fun together Amber 😂 I hope you do some traveling adventures with her 💙🏴
That storm was crazy! Glad you found propane and had someone to laugh with. Thanks for sharing with us!
Hi pretty lady. How are you doing today? And how is the family are doing today? And how is the weather over there???
One of my favorite video's, Amber! It was great seeing you laugh and have a great time even in the midsts of change of plans. Well done!
I live in the DFW area. I was running errands on the Monday the ice storm started. It began to rain sleet really hard so I went home. Didn’t leave again until Friday morning🥶. I saw so many smashed vehicles on the side of the freeway on my way to work. We got a little stir crazy but I’d rather be home safe than out trying to maneuver in the ice!
Glad I saw this..Dani is SO inspiring keep going no matter what.
It's always fun to travel with a friend. 2 vans. Fun stuff. Survive van travel.
Great to see video of Corpus Christi. It has changed a lot from when I was a kid.
I ran out of propane on a recent trip and my van got down to 30… so cold! Worst thing was it was my fault as I thought I had enough to get thru the night. I’m feeling your pain!
This is soooo depressing but i am addicted to this reality hunger games style of story telling, every time i want to go live in a van i watch these videos and i feel so conflicted. I think this amber person is super sweet and fun though
You poor girls! But I’m glad you’re making the most of it and you have your sense of humor!😆
You poor things! Ugh. It’s good to show people the reality of what can happen though. At least the two of you got to spend a lot of time together. ❤
Hi pretty lady. How are you and how is your family doing today? And how is the weather over there??
So glad you are okay after dealing with that extreme cold. I get cold easily so I always have back up jackets and gloves with me all of the time. I get cold in the summer because of the a/c.
Hello, I thought this video was really fun and entertaining. Its so nice and fun to giggle and be a little goofy sometimes. You two werent rude at all. Your friend seems to be a very perky fun lady.
Oh and I went to ur more tab and ordered up a fixd stick for my truck and van. Thank you for that.
Hey have a great time and thank you for all you do for us.
🙂 👋
WOW, Amber! I'm delighted that you and Dani are having fun, and laughing, a-go-go, in the middle of an ice storm. I live in Houston, and was not laughing!🥶
Thank you very much for the information regarding FIXD.😊
VJAI COOPER 😊 Yeah it was so cold. I get it. We were just trying to make the best of everything. Did you fair well during the storm?
@Story Chasing YES, thank you for asking. However, the 2021, Artic Blast is a different story. A pipe burst in my complex, and Poseiden rose from the sea, and I videotaped it!🤣
I was teasing, and enjoyed the video. I'm laughing because you and Dani are a riot!🤣
Okay, we're Texans...🤣
Welcome back to humanity Amber. Laughter is great medicine. Stay Beautiful, funny, and factual.
You two are an absolute delight. I loved this so much! Lots of laughter and support in an unexpected challenging situation! Both of you made it work in the midst of it. BRAVO dear hearts. Does Dani have a YT channel... I'd love to follow her.
I love your friend's energy...you guys had me crackin' up! I'm headed to Dallas for a convention next week so I'm really hoping it's going to be better weather!! Stay warm Amber and hugs! xoxo Cella & Sugar
I enjoyed this video, you had a friend to help you get through this and you have a story to remember.🤭 Life can be a crap shoot!❤️❤️
Hello from VA...Love watching your journey.
This comment may be too late.....
But I noticed that Texas ( Dallas area too )....
Is in another Big Storm with possible Tornadoes....
I hope you're back to Home base & being safe....
My husband and I are officially fulltime rvers ... Well tonight we ate experiencing our first night freezing cold dead battery no hookups thankfully I have ice packs and made ice with our icemaker in case this happened but we are feeling so free not tied to a house
I am so grateful to have come across your video and watching it has been a unique experience. As someone who used to have a very adventurous personality and to see where life has taken me to the place where I constantly feel tired, and burned out, living in a city has huge effects. Watching you and your adventures inspire me to change some things and maybe also give van life a chance as well :) thank you and wish you all the best.
So glad you had a fun friend like Dani with you....
So you could have some laughs while stuck in bad conditions.... & Also having Yummy Food to Enjoy...
Good Luck.... Getting Home.... Thanks....
I have FIXD and love it for my over the road job. I highly recommend it too!
America is very surprising with the extreme weather. Before watching vlogs of van lifer. I was always thinking Texas hot remote derest. It is a very strange concept of snow in the derest. In Australia derest or outback there is never snow. Fascinating what happens in other countries. Really good candid video loved seeing you laugh and smiling happy face.
Luv ur ballerina bun on top of your head! I hadn't seen your hair like that before and it's adorable on you!
As a person who's spent a lot of time in coffee shops and caffe's, holy cow do I know about the phone conversation thing. It's like people think they have a magical wall of silence around them and will talk about all kinds of personal things.
“Nevertheless, she persisted” really should be your motto. It’s like the universe wants you to stay put in an apartment but you’re like “hell, no. I’ve got living to do”. GOOD FOR YOU! 👍😃
37degrees is a Heat Wave in my part of the Country!!!!
I'm in Minnesota...come on up and stay a week!!! Lol
Amber I truly loved your video but I hate that you didn't have no heat that really bothered me but anyway I love you videos sweet thank you so much for sharing it with us I'm down here in Tennessee and I did not know they was having an ice storm in Texas until you said something be safe take care can't wait till your next video and God bless you
Way to go.. Smart survivor I like that!! No complaints just solutions surviving... I bet you wish you were all warm at your casa!!
Stay safe and warm
Richard Eckert Thank you very much! 😊🙏
I think this was a most enjoyable video. The unexpected was fun! Thank you ☺️
You're a good creator. I think it's the real that you bring with your videos that makes your videos a bit intriguing and interesting. Stay safe my virtual friend and keep up the good work! Thanks for the effort.
I think you should just come to my house in Venice, FL. It's gorgeous here! (And I retired here from Vermont!)
Hi pretty lady. How are you and how is your family doing today? And how is the weather over there??
Oh Amber, what a mess of issues you had to go through!!! Hope you made it to Dallas safe and sound.
Great video Amanda…the good news you spent quality time with a friend, which is always fun. Be safe traveling home. God Bless ❤️👏🏻🙏🏻🇺🇸
I live in Chicago area. My Columbia gloves stay with me until May
You definitely need some warm garments in Chicago. I did have some rather nice ones, but left them at home. It wasn't supposed to be cold there! lol
FYI Navy submarines are boats. The Lexington is a Ship.
Yes I have fixd for 2yrs I think Almost. I order mine from youtube they have on it. Pretty cool thing to have. Enjoyed the video. Sorry yall got caught in cold. I know yall had a time. Lol keep enjoying you!!!
Good hot food definitely keep you warm
HUSTLERS 😊 The Pho was amazing.
@@storychasing i wanna make that soup got alot of good ingredients in it
Awesome video! Brrrrrrr cold weather I hear yeah over here west coast cold cold. Thank you for sharing.
I hear you about being cold in an RV! We had quite a bit of ice and freezing 🥶 rain here in Oklahoma! I ran out of propane on Wednesday morning! It was so cold my space heaters did nothing! I don't think I would have survived if my power had gone out! I pretty much stayed under my electric blanket all week! They finally were able to bring me some propane on Friday morning! I am very fortunate because my tank is on board, they will deliver it to me at my site! Dont even have to unhook or anything! She brought it to me and I turned my heat back on and it started warming up in here right away! I just sit here and cried big huge sobs...I was so cold! Crazy that storm went all the way down to Corpus Christi!!! Just can't seem to get away from the cold...I am having serious doubts about traveling at all in the winter! Think I just really need to find me a nice warm cozy little house and just travel in the spring and the fall!
After all the sadness you have had it lifts my heart to see you just laughing with a girl pal. Your video is just reinforcing my decision to sell my Travato and now have a tiny Transit Connect. I might upgrade someday to a larger Cargo Van but no more systems for me. They just always seems to break. To be fair, I rarely camp without at least a plug in and public restrooms and showers.
both those ships carry oil, I was in one like the first one (tanker) and you think it's big outside the white section on the back (cabins and engine) is like 10 stories as it goes down into the hull of the ship, it was incredible to see, I worked at an oil refinery at the time and one of the guys got permission to take me on board for a tour, it was pretty cool. The second one was a barge it lightens the tanker so it can come into/out of port if not it may hit bottom, once they reach deeper waters they will transfer the oil back into the tanker.
Nice and lib video! So great to laugh with you girls!
Hi if your wanting to stay at a free beach you should have gone to Port Bolivar Peninsula. It's across the ferry from Galveston. But the wind is terrible in the winter, 15-25 mph. You went there once but you called it something else. We used to camp there for many months of the year. Hope you stay safe and I hope you are familiar with camping on the beach in Padre because the sand is a lot thicker than Bolivar or corpus
M son and husband slept on the USS Lexington with a Boy Scout troop! The water starts to clear around Freeport Texas. The beaches east of that are muddy because of the Mississippi River! Just a bit of Texas info
Before you leave check out everything in the van and you must buy 2 of the stuff you need
Kary 😊 I guess I was hoping to avoid 2 of everything but it looks like I will have 2 of somethings and a better check list for the future. lol
I have a code reader and I'll bet the Fix'd didn't cost as much. Thanks for the info. I'm gonna get one in addition.
Michelle 😊 It saved me today in fact.
Awesome fun,......you made the best of a bad situation!
This is an Awesome Video full of twists and turns! 👍🤠🙏❤🇱🇷
OM gosh, I can’t believe we’re short of propane. Thanks for letting us know.
Women Station Channel 😊 Some places didn't have propane, but others said they didn't have a tech to fill or they didn't have an adapter for the RV. I've NEVER had this issue before so it was definitely weird.
@@storychasing Yup. I told a friend of mine who’s out on the road. I don’t want her to get stuck. She’s a bit more North of you right now but you can never be too careful. ✋❤
Glad to see you happy. Does Dani have a youtube channel ?
Hola👋from southern New Mexico🌶️🌵....Snow in the mountains here. I go thru at least 11Lbs of propane each week providing the sun shines in the day and warms the RV. 53° Yesterday...glad your having fun with Dani.
The frozen brat! 😄 Good thing you didn't chip a tooth! We were definitely goofy, but we had to make the best of a complete change of plans, and I think we did!
I bet this makes you glad that you have a real home to go back to.
I can’t believe you ate that hot dog frozen!! 😱🤣 I think eating out repeatedly is allowed in your extreme circumstances. Yikes! 😂❤
My husband gives me grief for having so many back up ways to heat water in our vehicles 🤣. I have a tiny alcohol stove, a tiny wood stove, I'm also about to get a little sterno stove. Plus I have a tiny rice cooker and crockpot both of which are under the watts of my Jackery. Girl you could have cooked that hot dog up in some rice and had a hot meal in a rice cooker.
🤣🤣, OMG, is my hot dog bun frozen too? We have to laugh to keep from crying, right? 😂 This was so funny Amber.💞 Thank you for the laugh but I'm so sorry you were freezing cold, and yeess, Hot showers always help. Glad you were able to finally get propane. See you on the next.😎
Are those blankets on the bed Rumpl blankets? Those are the best!!
Where is your electric cooktop? We have electric blankets that plug into the Jackery as well. What a trip!!!! Haha
We miss Lady Lex sooooo much in Pensacola, FL which was her home berth. 😔😔😔😔😪
Howdie neighbor! (From next county over)
I lived in Texas for a year. That was enough. The weather is unpredictable.
HI AMBER n is there Wal-Mart r discount store 2 buy electric blanket since u carry jackery type solar generator? U can also pick up single gas stove that campers use or mr buddy heater or small electric heater. these items r good 2 have as a backup since weather changes on a dime. thks rox
Darling, love your hair like this. You be you... but I sure like it on camera. I'm talking about the longer length, not the bun.😆 Sorry... Wow. Sorry it was so cold.
Pity you didn’t bring a beanie & gloves as body heat escapes through top of head! 😁 🥶 Dani is so much fun thank goodness you are together during the freezing weather….you were funny in the Cafe! I think people who speak on loud speaker in public are just rude or ignorant? 😕 Safe traveling 😍🇦🇺🤗
Amber not everyone is from America so next time u put a map up it would be good if you can put a circle up so non usa citizens can see where you are. You need a diesel heater then you won't have any problems.
Seems like Texas turned into Colorado for a bit 😂. Colorado girl here 👋
Hi Amber, I'm glad you got back on the road even though it was a much bigger adventure then what you planned but I want you to know I enjoy your content and appreciate your advice such as the FIXD OBD code reader I used your link to get one for me and my van so when the next thing goes wrong with my van I will be better prepaired to deal with it
you need a desiel heater.
I enjoyed this watch thank you❤😂
Velos Aquarius is an oil/chemical tanker (thank you Google).
Ian Furqueron 😊 lol. See we learn. Thank you Ian.
😂😂😂 I did the same. Google
I thought you said, “I wasn’t able to find cocaine” 🤣
Need a beenie to keep the heat in your body!!
Oh you and Dani made me laugh so hard. Please do some more videos with Dani. She’s so good for you Amber! 💕
Hi pretty lady. How are you and how is your family doing today? And how is the weather over there??
Amber, where is you bluetti and jackery? Could of solved your problems.
Enjoyed the slapstick!!
Love your videos!
Safe travels.
Glad you enjoyed it! lol
Can't operate a bun but I bet you know how you apply those hotdogs?
Oh... I guess I missed that it was 4 p.m. in premiere time I was 20 minutes late to the live chat LOL oh well I'll watch it now
Laura's Lanes 😊 Hopefully next time. I hope you enjoy the video.
@@storychasing I did that was pretty funny! Glad you're safe!
Amber, how about the wig you left in the van. That may help keep your head & neck warm😄
You guys are so funny🥶
Amber, I ordered the fixd from your link but upon completing order I saw the fixd premium. This appears to be an annual membership?
This made me MAD. They do NOT tell you about the $69.99 annual subscription until AFTER you purchase. My van isn't ready yet, and I DON'T want it activated till I'm ready. Still in the unbelievable process of cancelling the FIXD Premium!!!!😡
Esther stephens 😊 No you don't have to do the premium or give them any information. Just hit the X and you have it for free. I don't pay anything at all and never have. I just use the free part. I had so many other things I was talking about in the integration that I didn't mention this part, but I guess I just thought everyone would see that there is a free version and a premium depending on which one you want. I've always done the free version.
@LilWoolf I responded to your other comment but I'll add it here too in case you or others didn't see the other response. No you don't have to do the premium or give them any information. Just hit the X and you have it for free. I don't pay anything at all and never have. I just use the free part. I had so many other things I was talking about in the integration that I didn't mention this part, but I guess I just thought everyone would see that there is a free version and a premium depending on which one you want. I've always done the free version.
Wow
Funny commercial!
Amber do you still
Have reliable internet? I got some weird email saying pay pal will no longer deduct my bill. I can’t seem to get a hold of them. Please take care!!
Does Dani have a channel to follow? If so, can you share it?
Why didn’t you and Dani get a hotel room for a few days?
I don’t know why but I thought you had a generator on board, that would have been the ticket for running your heat w/o propane or enough solar power. Sorry. Stay warm head to Florida beaches.
Amber, where is the FIXD link?
It’s in the description of the video. HTTPS://www.storychasing.com/FIXD
Thanks Amber!
Talk about why you needed certified propane?
When you're down on the farm and you wanna get warm , propane.
Gesh, you had a really great opportunity to do a great video on the food and area, but you passed it off. Too bad.
I don't understand why you just didn't turn your van on and run it? My last ice snow blizzard a couple months ago the campground I'm staying in the electric went out and I don't like propane so I let it run out. I just turned my truck on it heated the whole RV and I stayed warm to the next day when my kids come pick me up because the electric still wasn't on. Good luck on getting home 😸🙏
Yikes that’s awful. It’s not good to run your engine like that all night without actually driving. So that’s why I didn’t. I’d run it just before I went to bed and then upon getting up.
WHY NOT HEAT THE HOTDOG? LOLOLOL
Defrost it in the microwave??
❤👍
I think those are barges
Fonda Truelove I was trying to figure out what they are for.
