Empress, thanks for shining light on this totally forgotten very good song. Actually one of my favorites of theirs. Probably Someday we will be Together & Were did our love Go are favorites. An iconic Motown singer and group.

I’ve never heard this, but it has that classic Supremes/Motown sound. I like the storytelling because it’s sounds so emotional.

❤❤❤ At age 65, I still get the tears when I hear, "I'm Living in Shame." My mom passed away at age 40 in 1967, 2 weeks after my 8th birthday. My brothers and I were pulled out of school during the bereavement time while dad tried to figure out how to carry on w 3 sons w no mother. When I returned to school, I remember feeling embarrassed in not knowing how to explain my absence to my classmates. I made up a story saying my mom "had to go away" and didn't elaborate on any details. 😢

I used to run around singing " Mama, Mama, can you hear me..?"..until my Mama got aggravated with me, lol! Sad, but Baaad!!! I love the drum crashes! An underrated song...like " No Matter What Sign You Are", and "Forever Came Today"

If I’m not mistaken, this track was on a greatest hits cassette I had with me in the car mid80s.

This was my first CD in the late 90’s in middle school lol. I used to go to school singing the lyrics because they were so dramatic lol and she was just readin mama DOWN 😂

***MISS ROSS & THE SUPREMES TRIVIA TIME!!*** ...mama, can you hear me!? (4:58) .....heck, can EMPRESS hear me!? ; )
    - ...well, it's about TIME La Empress came back! ...I was BURSTING to give trivia somewhere! ...ha-HAA!! ...This 1969 tune was an un-official "Imitation Of Life" (3:47) follow-up to the VERY controversial Nov. 1968 #1 Pop / R&B comeback smash, "Love Child"; by this time, The Supremes & Diana were becoming VERY separatist....
    - ...this tune wasn't done with HDH, Mary or Cindy; Diana went in Solo, and had The Adantes (3:29) do backup; Fans KNEW right off the bat, and wasn't too keen on it...besides, the tune was MUCH more 'Pop', and not aligning with the serious Music of the times.....
    - ...It DID do well, though, going to #10 Pop / #8 R&B...BUT, Miss Ross was showing signs of itchin' to go.....SOLO.......this tune wound up on their Spring 1969 LP, "Let The Sunshine In"....featuring Diana doing a SOLO rendition of "The Age Of Aquarius"! ...she REALLY wanted to go Solo...Right NOW! ...............
    - ...P.S. the CD cover photo was LONG stated by Mary Wilson, as her most FAVORITE Supremes shot EVER, because of Flo's femininity, Diana's 'Divaness'...and, of course, because she was in the *MIDDLE* .....(0:26).....

A couple of the lyrics in this are rather campy--especially "Came a telegram/Mama passed away while making homemade jam". That line just makes me picture Mama lying dead on the floor all covered in jam. A little more time could have been spent by the lyricists to find rhymes without such absurdity. This song was Motown's follow up on Love Child, a huge hit for Diana Ross and the Supremes. Great production and music on this and Diana shows off her talent for acting and emoting on the lyrics, campy as they are here. And you're absolutely correct--the songwriters had Imitation of Life in mind when they wrote this one. This song could easily be titled "Sarah Jane's Lament".
