    The little neck comment is wonderful.; Mary was more or less telling Henry VIII, "After what you did to Anne Boleyn you've got to be kidding to think I would marry you!!" I wonder what Henry's reaction to Marie's little jab was?

    • @terrignazari6330
      @terrignazari6330 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Good point! Actually, I don't think there is any way a marriage between Marie de Guise and Henry VIII would have worked out even if she had agreed to marry him. From what I've read, Marie was a very strong-willed woman, as well as being clever and shrewd. She was no meek little pushover. Henry would have soon discovered he'd married another Anne Boleyn - who was perhaps even stronger-willed than his ill-fated ex.

    Marie was very smart to reject Henry. It took him two years to find a new bride after the death of Jane Seymour, and gosh, I WONDER why.

    • @pbohearn
      @pbohearn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, and she was a foreigner, unknown to the Court, His Minister had to go talent scouting deep into Germany to find him a new wife- no takers in Bloody England? No aristocratic girl chomping at the bit to get her chance? Lol. No, and Henry, a womanizer, curiously was willing to roll the dice and marry immediately after meeting someone who’s likeness he only knew from a portrait, whom he had never met, and was thus relying on the accuracy of his ministers reports. That sounds a lot like speed dating or worse- Tinder?? What it was was a romantic train wreck. And what did was he reportedly blurt out when his 2nd Anne was maybe out of earshot, (she didn’t speak or understand English anyway so perhaps that’s why he didn’t hold back )? “I LIKE HER NOT!!!” Emphatically! To his roving minister who knew it was time to update his resume lol. that marriage was annulled faster than Britney’s Vegas marriage to her backup dancer. LOL.
      Marie d’Guise was also Catholic , it appears, and Henry has already broken from the Roman Church and set up his own shop with him at the head of it. He never married a Catholic after his 1st pious wife forced the issue. That may have given Marie pause. But I guess he liked her childbearing hips?? “She’s a Big Girl”

    Marie must have stole that 'little neck' joke out of the Anne Boleyn book of humour! I didn't know Marie bore two sons before Mary. To hear they are buried together is tragic. BTW Maj is a real beauty and a scene stealer. 😺

    Wasn’t there an Italian aristocrat who similarly said she would marry Henry if she had two heads? I don’t think Henry’s reputation survived Anne’s beheading in life and certainly not in death.

    It seems Henry did not think the whole wife-killing thing would impede his future marriage prospects, did he? 😂😂😂 Marie’s little comment made me think of Christina of Milan’s later jibe about marrying Henry only if she had another head to give him.

    Can I ask if a book titled, The Royal Queens, is very accurate? It’s on audible. And do you intend on putting any of your books on audible.

      I tried looking on Audible and couldn't find a book with that title. Who's it by?
      Two of my books are on Audible - The Fall of Anne Boleyn: A Countdown, and The Anne Boleyn Collection.

    Marie was a smart woman to turn down Henry Viii. It is amazing how oblivious Henry seemed to be to his own reputation after having killed one of his wives under dubious circumstances and he'd execute another in 6 short years apparently thinking it would make no difference in how he was perceived. His own agents in Denmark, when they were trying to sell the idea to Christina to marry Henry praised him and described him as gentle! Happily she also would have none of it. I think most of Europe knew this man was unstable and dangerous.

      Yes, he just seems to have been oblivious to his rather questionable reputation. Marie had a lucky escape there!

    Hi Claire! Thanks for the video ... like a number of others, I'm loving the little neck comment. But I imagine it went over Henry's head.
    I also wanted to say a special thank you for the way you've answered my various and assorted questions. Since I don't have any other way to thank you, I wanted to give you some music. This is baroque music called Magnificat in C Major by German composer Johann Kohnau and performed by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir. When I first heard it, I could hear some similarities to the music of Anne of the Thousand Days and Lady Jane, as well as various episodes of The Tudors. This is some of the best baroque music I've heard on YT, and I hope you enjoy it.
    Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/GJ-wr1d4_F4/w-d-xo.html
    Thanks again for your kindness towards me and my questions!

    For all the references to Christina, dowager Duchess of Milan: wasn't her "two heads" comment an invention by later commentators? It's an apocryphal statement, I think.

    It is hard to keep the players straight when everyone is named Mary, James, Henry, Charles, and to make things more complicated they were sometimes named one name at birth and then ruled under another name.

    Another delightful video, Claire: thank you! Marie's comment that she had a little neck sounds so much like Anne Boleyn's remark. And her riposte sounds like Christina of Denmark's "If I had two heads, one of them would be at the King of England's [i.e., Henry VIII] disposal." Renaissance royal ladies had such Wit....

    Didn’t another woman that’s name avoids me at the moment lol.......oh Princess Christina👰🏻👑😇😍 who was staying at court of Milan say something similar when asked to marry Henry VIII?....I remember her quote ( If I had two heads, one would be at the king 🤴🏼 of Englands disposal ( yes I would marry him. ) Yet,alas I only have but one.” (A big no way lol!) I like that she was sassy yet classy lol !! The royals from other countries seemed to wise enough to see the trend since they weren’t subjects nor was it worth it to risks.sSeems more like the only reason he married English woman was because they had no choice since he was king lol that and ambition of course.

    Curious as to why Marie was referred to as a "big" woman, I poked around on Google (*cough wikipedia *cough) and Marie was reported to be 5 feet 11 inches tall. She must have looked quite regal in her gowns. Very interesting lady, the mother of Mary Queen of Scots.

    • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, "big" in this case would refer to height. Henry VIII was tall.

    Think after what happened to Anne it scared women away from him . I definitely would not want to marry him after what he did to Katherine of Aragon .
