    My dad used to play Rise of Rome all the time back when I was about 3-4 years old, he tells me the Hittites were op and a lot of people played as them back then. With the current patch my favorites are Greeks. I like all AoE games (2 is my favorite) and I find plenty of 2,3, and AoM content but im glad to see some AoE1 content. Subbed.

      i really only played 1 when I was 4 years old, I always played Choson because I thought it sounded cool and for no other reason than that. But when we got AoM I only ever played that. Nowadays I only ever play 2 DE and AoMEE, but sometimes install 1 DE for some nostalgia

    What I find interesting is that in the big patch made a few months after this video, all of your low tier civs got buffed. Babylonians and Choson get Market and Storage Pit discounts, Carthage starts with extra resources, Egyptians get cheaper farms, and Greeks get faster working Town Centers.
    If you made this tier list today, would it be any different?

    • @WinstonsWaffles
      @WinstonsWaffles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yes and no,
      The strong civs still have attributes that make them the strongest; but, the weaker civs have been assisted greatly. A lot of games (at a high level) are decided by openings and early game eco; so civs that got buffed in later stages - eggy for example - are better but still not 'top tier competitive' in a 1v1.
      The cho bonus is nice, but doesn't do thaaat much. The carth bonus is probably the biggest and has the largest impact on its placement.
      Carth went from a really low grade to being one of both the best rushing and booming civs. It's opening provide a lot of flexibility, and on water maps its fish boom is absurdly devastating in the hands of the right player.
      Babylons buff simply wasn't enough imo, I think if the market techs were ~50% cheaper it would still be a pretty weak bonus, but any more than that would be just out of place in the games civ set.
      Greeks now have one of the strongest pocket plays if the TC boom is uninterrupted, but have very few tools to ensure that. Their timings will always be just on par with any other civ, so a strong rush on pocket will be devastating as their walls wont be up particularly fast.

    B : ASSY MIN SUM PER (too map dependant)
    C : BAB CART CHO
    D : PALM (75f vill ruin this civ) GRE (no archers no camels)

    Hello, let me share some thoughts on this. My conditions are pretty different, as I play classic edition of the game (shame on me? :D ) and usually against computer - land maps, several opponents, starting from Tool Age. (I'm just planning to buy The Return of Rome DLC when there will be more of content.) I like to use cavalry line and horse archers, so I definitely understand why you placed Yamato and Shang into S group, I played with them often too. But now, I am getting very interested in Palmyrans! Yesterday I have checked all tech trees from a specific point of view: my favourite units (cavalry line, horse archer line) and back-up options (hoplite line, ballista, plus chariots as "trash" units). My assumption is that when you are bothered by powerful units, usually you should counter it with different types to respond with economical efficiency. Now I can be wrong, but rock-paper-scissors principle led me to value flexibility/opened tech tree more than bonuses for any specific units. I found that Palmyrans have EXACTLY that: tree including everything mentioned above at least in 1 from 2 levels or 2 from 3 levels of the units. I see that with quicker villagers, Palmyrans should save some population space and they have also different counter options: camels against cavalry/horse archers, elephants+ballistas against hoplite line, chariots/horse archers against priests, all levels of catapult against ballistas. It seems to me they should be able to respond to everything - so now I doubt there is a civilisation that could fit to my purpose better than Palms. And that difficult start does not bother me, as human should be always better in booming than AI. The only issue is to know what your enemies want to use soon enough - that could be partially solved by sending scouts and having a lot of production buildings to create units simultaneously. I hope you will let me know about what you think.

    • @WinstonsWaffles
      @WinstonsWaffles  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting thoughts! Tool age starts are pretty unique in online play, not many games are played on that setting but Palmy are for sure a very versitile civ with a solid wide tech tree, they have good power units too like HHA for lategame. Thanks for watching :)

    Wow, the game has changed a lot since I played this game at quite a high level in the late 90s. Persians were trash. Hittites top tier . And no one cared for the Romans. And no one really ever played aggressively in the tool age except on water. Have the civ stats and unit balance changed or is this pure strat development?

    • @WinstonsWaffles
      @WinstonsWaffles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hm, tool rushes for sure became a meta thing in the voobly days throughout the 2000s, DE brought a lot of smaller tweaks to the game, alongside a TON of quality of life features, making it easier for people to do more in the game (play aggressive AND handle economy/defense at the same time) whereas on classic managing your eco could be such a burden without rally points, multi-queue, etc... these features that players on DE rely on for an overall higher level of play (not to say there weren't absolute beasts playing back in the day, they just played a harder game lol).
      Thanks for watching :)

      @@WinstonsWaffles Hah, yeah being ready to get that next vil order in the TC just as the last one popped out while doing everything else was pretty much one those things that you had to do to be competitive at the upper levels. You sort of developed a feel for when you had to go back to your TC.
      So tool rush became meta before any changes to the core game?! That's amazing, I remember tool age units not being worth the sacrifice to bronze age time.
      Do many people still play aoe1?

    So all the priest masters, Babs, Egypt and Choson are low. I may need to do some learning of the early game to get used to multiplayer. At least when it comes to 1v1. But Palmyrans I'm going to enjoy testing those since they are slightly higher than I expected.

      choson only excel in the lategame, generally even if a civ is bad in iron age on paper, if they are good in the early game they will dominate choson, because stone and tool age arealways played in 1v1 vs bronze occassionally and iron almost never.
