Why Putin is Afraid of Ukraine

If Putin does take Ukraine and incorporates it into the Russian borders, won’t he end up sharing borders with more NATO members than he does presently?! At least when it comes to the current Baltic members on the border, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, he can encircle them via Belarus and Kaliningrad Oblast and effectively block them off the rest of the bloc so long as he has a favorable regime in Minsk.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has a lot of people scared, but it also has a lot of people confused. Why would Russia, a country of over 140 million people and over 17 million square kilometers of land, invade Ukraine, a country of just 40 million, with an even more minuscule 600,000 square kilometers of land? After all, it’s not like Russia needed more land or natural resources, they already have it all.
