I am an Indian living in Finland. I really love the honesty, integrity and hardwork that an average Finn displays in daily life. Finland, unlike many other European countries, does not have a bloody history of colonialism. Finns have developed themselves by sheer determination and hard work. Average Finns are patriotic without being xenophobic. There are reasons why Finland ranks number 1 in human development index time and again. Long live Finland 🇫🇮 ❤️ ❤️.

I'm a croat born and raised in Germany. I was shocked to witness a war in my country, Croatia and now again...in 21st century to see such a massacre in Ukraine where 10 mil. people are displaced and many thousands are being killed, whole cities destroyed. Unfortunately, all this caused by Russian army. I was few times in Helsinki, Espoo and admire your beutiful country which is so different compared to Croatia but on the other hand we have much in common: we love our homeland, we are proud people, we strive to be independant, we love democracy and freedom. In last 80 years Finnland has done great achievements in protecting their lovely nature, creating the world's best design, achievements in human rights, economy, world's best education system. With such a heritage and known Finnish values I am sure that Finland will again wisely decide what's in their best interest ( together with Sweden). You have our fully support from Croatia.

I think this video misses the main reason why Russia hasn't invaded Finland and the main philosophy behind Finnish defense.
Finland has made the thought of invading it incredibly costly. Finland can mobilize more than half a million trained soldiers from a population of 5,5 million. Every building above a certain size has a bomb shelter. Every bridge is designed with slots that make destroying them with explosives easy. Finland has prepared for an invasion since the second world war and has enough guns to hand every willing person a East-German AK and tell them to camp in the forest.
And what would Russia gain from invading Finland? Finland has little natural resources, there are only a few million people and Finland's location is not that strategically useful all things considered. The main philosophy behind Finnish deference is a cost benefit analysis. What would a potential invader gain and what would it cost?
The reason behind the move towards NATO is partly fear yes, but also the benefit of remaining neutral is not that great to Finland anymore. During the cold war Finland benefited from being able to trade with both east and west but now that Finland is in the EU Finland has to follow the EU sanctions. It is impossible to sit on the fence anymore.

900k reservists (with guns for everyone as well). If war breaks out, the Army can just take anything and everything (like transport vehicles, buildings, anything you can imagine) under its control if it deems it necessary and the terrain is perfect for guerrilla warfare too. And other (infra etc) benefits which I am not gonna discuss here :)

But Sweden has betrayed its neighbours on multiple occasions which is why Scandinavia (+Finland) 'Nordica' is still an umbrella term rather than a political reality. NATO should make demands of both Sweden & Finland. Membership isn't automatic. They are to be respected as sovereign states but this time they have to be open, sharing and passionate rather than merely cherry-picking their obligations as they do in the EU.

Ukraine isn't considered to be quite "close enough" to the west to be worth protecting, but Finland and Sweden definitely are.

Ive since then partaken in Military rehearsals and have taken upon myself to attend courses both in civilian life and the ones hosted by the Military. If it should come to it, that an invasion would take place during my lifetime, i will not hesitate to take up arms to defend my home, family, friends, country and my freedom. Whether or not it comes with the help of Nato, doesnt affect my judgement. Ive made the decision to stand my ground if need be. As a grandson of a Winter war veteran, who was serving and fighting for his life on the toughest front in Karelia during 1939-40, it shatters me when I think of how we never learn from wars and the absolute HORROR it brings to humanity. Finland was in a very desperate situation barely 80 years ago, learning from both history books and personal stories of veterans, it would seem an alien thing, like a thing of the past to think about it nowadays.
But now we're currently(and have been for a long time) living in a world where dictatorships thrive once more at the cost of its denizens, held under tight control. We're living through another terrible chapter that should never have rhymed or repeated in modern times. I dearly hope Finland and all other nations will never see the light of day when their country is in a state of war, even if our army has always been prepared for the worst.
It feels hopeless knowing that there's nothing you can concretely do as an individual to change the course of history, but hopefully as a collective, we can change for the better. Whether you're Russian or Ukrainian, I hope you can make a difference. As small, as big as it may be, a change for better.

Based on the recent performance of Russia's soldiers and the state of their equipment and logistics, Russia would basically be throwing thousands of soldiers to their death if they try Finland in conventional warfare. Finland has a lot of well-trained and highly motivated soldiers backed by modern equipment and other western European countries. Russia cannot afford to open a new war front. They're incredibly bad in contact warfare. If Putin didn't have that nuclear weapon option, this war would have been over a lot sooner.

One thing people forget or don't know about is that Finland still has fortified defensive line in place on the whole length of their eastern border. Its not currently in operational use but it could be made totally operational with modern weapons in few months with enough workers. The bunkers are totally usable, trenches would not take long to dig, other fortifications and tank traps would not take that long either. Even if modern warfare is usually seen not as conventional warfare as it was back in WWII defensive lines still can work as well as back then. People know about Mannerheim line that worked well in Winter War to hold off the Soviets well Salpa line that was build after it is even worse for attackers it just never saw action as the peace was signed before finnish troops had to fall back to it and after the WWII it has stand there and is still in tip top shape most parts. The whole line is considered cultural heritage site so it can't be destroyed and who could destroy bunkers meant to be able to survive almost anything you could shoot them with.

There are a few differences between Ukraine and Finland which means Russia will never succeed with a land attack.
First of all they are pretty bad at it as it has shown over and over again, the regions that they have attacked in Ukraine are basically flatlands, any uneven terrain and they get their teeth kicked in.
Terrain in eastern finnish border is a whole other story, the few roads that lead into the country are carved out of tundra, mud and extremely thick forest.
Second is that just like in the Winter War, this is what Finland has been training for for since WWII, it's the only thing they been training for while Russians have been training for defense only.
Also EU Mutual Defense clause means any and all EU-members can freely come into Finland and defend it whenever they want, one thing we know is that there are a lot of fingers on the trigger in EU right now waiting to squeeze.
Basically the threats have lost their effect after a decade of throwing them around and people are getting sick of them.

If Russia were to try an invasion of Finland from that base up north, they'd be going into a very sparsely populated region. The capital city, Helsinki, is nearly 500 miles away. Their logistics would be extremely hard--pressed to supply the invasion force while it was still in Russia and not under attack. As they've learned in Ukraine, they'd never be able to maintain it on a 500 mile march through hostile territory, and there's simply nothing worth grabbing in the vicinity of that border crossing point. There are virtually no other bases in that part of Russia to augment a buildup and further logistic support either. Russia has far more densely-clustered bases to the south, very near Helsinki. If they decided to attack, they'd do it there.

The Finnish landscape would be hellish for the Russians as they'd have to move through deep valleys and forests, perfect for artillery ranging and full-scale ambushes. Not to mention every bridge and road could be easily and quickly blown up, making it that much harder to move across. All aircraft the Russians have would easily be taken out by advanced air-to-air systems, of which they have a huge amount. The only way they could realistically defeat the Finns would be via nukes.

Middle vague block country. 50's would count as eastern block to some degree, no marshall aid etc.
Finland was an inbetween country between west and east in cold war, being dictated by both sides who finland could trade with and what, but finland did still trade with both.
For examples see computers and the deep sea submarines, the subs cia said were ok to sell to ussr/russia because they thought finland couldn't do them, but finland could and then they put a stop to that(why ussr didn't build them themselves was that they lacked the proper steel metallurgy).
Finland also sold cranes to soviet block etc, which has a bunch of interesting stories about it that they couldn't actually get to one base they sold a crane to so had to instruct soviets on how to erect it and followed it getting erected from, get this, western satellite images(the cranes in question were big ass shipyard cranes which for again for some reason ussr couldn't provide themselves)

@@lasskinn474 Do you know how much other western countries have been trading with Soviet-Russia? Finland is a very western and Nordic country.
75% of forests are owned by private sectors. Also properties. Finland has a free market economy. Finland has got percentually more small private businesses than US. Finland has got all the freedoms in the world.
Forinstance the best freedom of press. The best freedom of religion. The best freedom of speech. You can google about it.
Finland is economically, politically, geographically and religiously a Nordic country and a member of Nordic council.

    • @lasskinn474
      @lasskinn474 ปีที่แล้ว

@@blackcoffeebeans6100 depends what year you look at. like said no marshall aid due to pressure, ussr had big power in finnish politics to the point where people like kekkonen could use fear of it - and they could affect finnish politics directly and so forth. even freedom of the press was so-so in some years.
and at times prominent politicians were just openly ussr fanboy communists too seeing czechoslovakia '68 as necessary for protecting workers rise and all other kinds of bull like that.
and no there's not other western countries just wouldn't flat out sell ussr some stuff that finland sold and finland sold what it could if not told by the west to not sell(and also bought ussr jets and tanks, but also swedish jets).
of course post ussr falling finlands been strictly "western", but even then it took russia attacking ukraine for finland to apply for nato due to russian influence on finnish politics via fear - so heavy was the legacy of ussr and russian influence on finnish politics - to the point where russian high ranking politicians were talking about the issue as if it wasn't our decision to make!
but anyway saying that finland was strictly western after ww2 is not really being honest and ignores the main issue which is THAT THE CENTER PARTY WILL BETRAY EVERYONE ALWAYS, no matter if you're right or left wing they find a way.

Well, to comment the video's content. What russia actually might think if they would decide to invade finland what ever the reason.
    1. Terrain. Finland is mostly forest. Finnish military is trained operating in guerilla type operation in forests.
    2. Finland has the one of the biggest (if not the biggest) trained army reserve in europe
    3. Finnish military equipment is quite modern. It doesn't rely anymore to russian era equipment like for example ukraina.
    4. Finlands military training is concidered very good in international standars. Professional soldiers in finnish military are highly regarded.
    5. Finnish artillery is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) in europe
The deterrance of finnish defence is there and working just fine.

I served my conscription in artillery many many years ago, but with few hour retraining I could still operate/aim both artillery cannons I used and probably others too. And I've seen some of the depos middle of nowhere with hundreds cannons fully maintained and operational back in the day. I bet there are literally hundreds if not thousands of these depos well hidden. I can only imagine what it is nowadays. I bet there are spare cannons to each crew and there are many generation of artillery crews in reserves.
