      I also hate that. Watched a few videos over the years where they are referring to their fps in the top left corner that I can barely read on a 32" 4k monitor full screen. I find that useless. Appreciate the feedback.

      @@NOTAM1 My previous experience was running DCS on an MSI Laptop with an i7-9070H @ 2.6GHz, GTX 1660 Ti 6GB and 32GB RAM. I thought even on that PC that DCS was awesome and that laptop required significant tweaking to get DCS smooth in VR. I'm running an Odyssey+. I purposely held off on finalizing my gaming PC build until the RTX 30 series line came out. I'm running a Zotac RTX3080 which performs almost on par with the TUFF. Items that task the shit out of the system are "Civilian Traffic" and "Shadows".
      When DCS is on screen I have settings pretty much maxed out like you.
      In VR I had to do the following and my VR settings are below. This gave me the best VR experience and was a great balance between visuals and FPS. I don't have a metric yet on my FPS but I will say in VR its buttery smooth.
      Step 1: Follow all guidance here for VR Shaders.
      th-cam.com/video/bkzHTclRIgQ/w-d-xo.html
      Step 2: Run the following
      "GameDVR_disable"
      Step 3: Optimize your RAM (Do this in the bios and make sure its set to the speed of RAM you paid for). i.e. I have 32GB DDR4-3000 but in the bios it was defaulted to 2300MHz. I had to bump it to 3000MHz where it should have been.
      Step 4: Overclock the CPU. I was clocking at 5.3 on the i9-10900k with a six fan Corsair 360mm watercooler but was unstable in DCS at that speed and had to run at a solid 5GHz
      Step 4: Overclock the GPU. Note that even though you OC the GPU faster, you might still need to dial back the OC speed some to be stable in DCS. DCS is awesome but poorly optimized for VR and even with your 3090, your CPU is going to be your bottleneck. Even my overclock on the i9-10900K was a bottleneck
      Step 6: tweak NVidia settings
      Step 7: (As much as it pains you thinking the 30-series GPU solved everything) Dial back the settings in DCS.
      Texture = High
      Terrain Texture = High
      Civ Traffic = OFF (

    Practically speaking you can reduce some of the settings with very little impact on the quality of the graphics. SSAO punishes the framerate with absolutely no benefit I can see and there's no need to combine MSAA with SSAA - that's another huge loss in frames - it's way better to pick one or the other.
    I can see why you used maxed out as a baseline, but for everyday use I'm getting a solid 60fps on every map in nearly all situations. That is with a 2080Ti at 4K - I have a 3080 on order, but I'm buying that with MSFS in mind.

    • @NOTAM1
      @NOTAM1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I had SSAA off before the test, just personally hate tests that tweak settings for a specific setup and claim X frames per second. You are correct though, anisotropic down and pre load and Super sampling are probably unneeded and were not on with the 2080 Ti when I ran it. But claiming X fps without a baseline like I mentioned doesn't mean anything either. I could have 150 fps with my 1070 Ti and the proper settings.

      @@NOTAM1 As @Anglo Spanish Racing Noted ----... And I agree with the baseline requirement for measurement and comparison is most important. It would be nice to see the maximum performance and visual quality running DCS @ 4K. Would you get a 30% FPS improvement with minimum reduction in visual quality - if you reduced or removed MSAA, turned of SSAA x2 and turned of SSLR? Some of the extra goodies DCS gives for these settings seem more useful for content creators making Cinematic Trailers and add no value to most gameplay situations.

    • @NOTAM1
      @NOTAM1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ysiadpir1423 it was more meant to give you a baseline of the 3090. If you take your card and max the settings you should see how much % improvement you should expect which should be similar to the % improvement at other settings (somewhat). That being said with SS and LR off I got around 90-200 fps. It varied wildly depending on the area. External views were closer to high 150+ fps. Hope that helps.

      @@kontoname well, I think most of the people thinking about a game engine like a 1 scene tech demo like to be found in 3d mark etc.. It is not just a checkbox in the settings to support different AA techniques. Some AAs are utilized during the rendering process, others after that in post effects time. Some techniques cannot be used with some of the lighting methods coz the combination causes lighting artifacts. Also the post effect AA gives blurry image which is very undesired on VR setups for example. The fact that I can paly the DCS on my old Haswell i5 k (4.4ghz) + 1070 msi gtx and 32gb 1666 ddr3 config while using RiftS shows the DCS isn’t that unoptimized crap..AA? I really don’t need it, if I set my pixel density a bit higher, the result is good enough for me.. If there was a new (txaa like) blurry result but small footprint I would leave it OFF. Better to have slightly pixelated edges than blurry image. The fact is, NOTHING beats the SSAA in image quality, not even close to it.

    • @g1gabyt3
      @g1gabyt3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kontoname How is he agreeing with him? That's just an optional feature in the options and isn't even the primary method for AA the engine is using. It's mostly there for people with powerful hardware, but with less capable monitors or for people who play on lower settings, but still want higher quality AA. SSAA is in no way outdated, it's just a fringe AA method due to hardware requirements, if anything MSAA is outdated. Having a native SMAA option would be nice, because post-processing AA methods like FXAA (which you can inject via your drivers settings manually) or TAA blur the objects way too much, which makes the target acquisition in simulators like this harder and completely unacceptable.
      Dude's literally rendering the game on 2 times the resolution with 4 times MSAA to boot at 4k, of course it will have relatively low performance just with the amount of clutter and polygonal density the game has to render with such inane drawing distances. This is not just an overkill, this is on completely imperceptible levels while also EXTREMELY hardware intensive. He claims it's to create the baseline, but it's not, no-one activates SSAA as a baseline, it's literally the last option you should consider and absolutely irrelevant to almost everyone.

      You are not alone, DCS is awesome, but even for pilots the barrier to entry (just using DCS, Mission Editor, where to learn about systems, where to start etc..) is not easily laid out or found. Its easy to say for people like me who have been around since LOMAC and flaming cliffs (loved those back then), but even having been around since then and walking away from DCS for a few years, my return to it was not a simple path.
      Eagle Dynamics have recognized this and are currently working on a middle ground product that will more easily introduce the product to people.

      MSFS has much better looking weather and the scenery looks better from a distance. But when you get up close, like you do when flying low in a fighter or looking through a targeting pod, FS starts to REALLY fall apart. Going through some valleys in the Caucasus region, it was pretty shocking how many times I could look over at the mountain side and see the river running sideways due to error in the satellite imagery. Hopping directly back into DCS, the scenery overall looked very bland, but when you get close it doesn't got all Alice in Wonderland on you. But the big thing that jumped out to me when I did the comparison is that the aircraft in DCS are stunningly well-modeled. After being unimpressed with the mountains, forming up on a tanker with some other jets up in the contrails, it just looked incredible. Overall, in any given screenshot I'd say FS is a better looking sim, but they both have strong and weak points. On a really good map like Syria, I do think DCS can trade blows with MSFS as long as weather doesn't get involved. ED say that a major weather revamp is a high priority; we'll see how they do. The weather in FS is truly jaw-on-floor stunning.

    42 fps for $2,500 CAD for a 3090 is pretty sad. The 3090 is a giant waste of cash for games (look at the benchmarks). I know this isn't in VR, but people need to understand that VR and 4K are only run by a microscopic number of gamers. I'd be more interested in a 1440p video with a 3070/6800 to see how this runs. I'm upgrading from a 1070 (at 1440p), and we all know that the optimization of DCS is terrible, but that is a far more realistic setup for the vast majority of gamers. Yes, it doesn't look great, yes, neither of the helicopters look any better (since they are all old modules). If you want eye candy, DCS is not about that. It's about the flight models and systems modeling. MFS is simply a tourist simulator with how Asobo approached flight dynamics, not to mention it doesn't have helicopters yet. But even when it will, nothing can beat the Huey in DCS. When I want to feel like I'm actually flying a helo, I always turn to that module.

    The planes look great. the ground textures look like garbage. but that is not your fault its very old software.

      DCS has it moments. The high fidelity of the aircraft are nice, and the trees can look better than MSFS sometimes, but the buildings and ground textures don't hold a candle to MSFS, I agree.

    I have same fps in 4K with a GTX1080. Perhaps you have a bottleneck in the motherboard/CPU/Memory

    • @NOTAM1

      Even anisotropic and the pre load slider gives double fps increases when turned down. Are you sure you have the exact same settings.

    Damn that is low FPS. I quit DCS because between DCS 2.0 and 2.5.5 With the same settings and hardware I went from 120 fps to 40, while game logic is mostly unchanged since 1.2. Sure I could burn 5000 Euro, but at some point one has to draw a line and ask if graphics alone on a flysim really worth 5000 Euro every 3 year. If the game logic, with coms, AI and so on, the game itself could just stick to 1.2.6 graphics. Graphics really matter if you get at ground level, but they totally abandoned Combat Arms, so i am sticking to Falcon BMS for now, until DCS will stop being a eye candy toy and take the simulation part seriously.

    Nice video but it’s not necessary to use a 3090 to max out DCS in 4K. A 2080Ti will do the job just fine. A strong CPU is a better investment for sims like this. In many situations that will be your bottleneck.

      I have a 2080Ti, it doesnt run these settings at all. Bro, look at the resolution, MSAA and SSAA. 11GB are not even close to what is needed. YT expert

    • @jarentz
      @jarentz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@krostouin yeah but running both SSAA and MSAA is overkill in any resolution let alone 2160p and unless you’re running a very large screen, the difference would be negligible. I run 4x MSAA in 4K but not SSAA. Using a 32” monitor. Hey if you’ve got a 3090 why not? Go for it. But you don’t need this kind of GPU to max out DCS. Again, the challenging low FPS situations in this sim will be limited by your CPU anyways.

      A 2080 Ti hold up well, but not at max settings. I have a 2080 Ti and ran it before this. I was getting 25-50% less fps with the 2080 Ti. I'm not saying you can't run a 2080Ti very well with this game, you can, if you lower some of the settings (many of which are unneeded granted, but still not max). But If I remove those settings (super sampling and anisotropic to 8x) with the 3090 I get around 90-200 fps. But that isn't how you benchmark something for others to use.

    • @jarentz
      @jarentz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NOTAM1 What benefit is 90-200 FPS in 4K? I don’t think there are many 4K monitors which run higher than 60hz. I run the same settings as you are minus the SSAA and get 60fps which is my monitor’s rate. Again, any situations where I get less than 60fps are due to the CPU. As a “benchmark” what your results show that a 3090 is overkill for DCS on a single screen. Unless you want to run >60hz or multiple displays. Heck try an 8K TV with the 3090 and get your money’s worth 😉

    • @NOTAM1
      @NOTAM1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jarentz The video wasn't a comment on whether or not you should or shouldn't buy a 3090 for DCS. Its just a benchmark. If you were to use it as this, it might give you insight into the performance you may need or require (or not) with your setup. I may be wrong, but I don't think I offered any opinions here. Just "this is what I'm getting" sort of thing. This build was done to support the HP G2 eventually, so I'll take all the performance I can get to push me as close to 90 fps as possible.
