    When Martin plays his fiddle, he goes to a place only known to himself. I thank him and all the boys for trying to get us to that place.

      If you haven't already, I HIGHLY recommend you watch Pixars newest movie Soul, the way that the film.talks about creative types amd the space they go to when they play/perform/create resonates so hard. Dont mistake this for a kids film, its a film for adults that kids can also enjoy

    I was sorry to hear of the beautiful Dennis Cahill's passing.
    My sincere condolences to Martin and all the Gloaming members, all his family and partner. A great loss to the world of Irish music and tradition, and to the world at large.
    Thank you for your lovely musicianship and beautiful empathic playing, Dennis.
    May you rest in glory amongst the countless reels, jigs and laments of your forefathers and mothers.

    I have been following this amazing musician since the 90's. I only saw him once live at the Chicago Celtic fest around '95 - playing in the band shell in Grant Park! Thousands were in the audience - and being Chicago - you can bet at least 75% were Irish or Scottish decent. He was accompanied only by the late great Dennis Cahill. And they brought down the house - playing the whole "Lonesome Touch" album and more. Talent like this ony graces our world once a generation or so. Martin is one of these talented spirits. I hope he comes back to Chicago soon as he once lived here and played many sessions at the Abbey pub on Elston Street.
    Martin - we miss you - please return and let us celebrate this great music again in your adopted home town where you found your great collaborator Dennis Cahill! You have so many fans here - who cherish those session days.

    I love Martin Hayes and was so sad to hear his long-time friend, Dennis Cahill, died back in June. They introduced me to traditional Irish folk music and I'll be forever grateful to them for that.

    First reel, The Lobster, is pure magic. It is my second favorite just after The Rolling Wave. The Gloaming, despite their moniker, are a star over the music itself.

    • @rebeccasohn8185
      @rebeccasohn8185 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apologies for replying four years late, but I think the first reel is "Boy in the Gap." It's also played on a Martin Hayes Quartet album, The Blue Room. The second tune is "The Lobster."

    I recently stumbled over this song on someone's random Spotify playlist and ended up listening to it on repeat for an hour. The violin is so amazing and inspiring and I would love love love to get my hands on the Sheet music (I'm not good at playing by ear). This playing is heartbreakingly good.

      Did you see that Martin Hayes has some instructional videos posted these days? Not these tunes, and, yes, taught by ear, but you might well enjoy 'em.

      just for future reference, while the instrument hes playing is identical to a violin, its called a fiddle in irish music.

      I learn by ear and I can't come close to Martin Hayes' delicate touch on the first tune. I have to be content to listen to it on repeat too :D
