    Thank you again, Will
As a big traveller on the XPTs, your review was spot on.
True, coffee and tea prices are extortion. I take my own favourite tea, my own mug, and just purchase a cup of hot water for $1 and make it up back at my seat . They happily do this as they don't stock much variety.
Recommend a sleeper, but take a friend unless you want to share with another male. And reserve the bottom bunk facing the direction of travel.
Car A daysitter Window in a forward direction of travel are great and more private.
The "white knuckle ride" between Wagga and Albury is fun.
No Wifi and dodgy phone reception is a big let down.
But, bring back the Southern Aurora anyday.
And use Car C ( buffet) toilet . Big and spacious, I'm tall and can barely fit in the others...and remember to LOCK THE DOOR.🤭🤭🤭
the overnight XPT is good, I just tire myself out during the day, and get in exhausted. I've been asleep by Moss Vale and woken up at Donnybrook many times..with the odd interruption during the night.
Some crew have said new trains will have no sleepers as they don't make enough money.
Also think about a NSW discovery pass. Great value..you can go to Brisbane, Broken Hill ..down to Adelaide, Byron Bay..and course Melbourne. A great incentive to save money.
    Just my 20c worth.
    Cheers and thanks again.
Oh and great vid of you speeding through Gunning.
    Cheers mate ..

Great video Will! I've only done the night train, which wasn't too bad but a bit rough in the economy seats. Certainly want to give the sleeping compartment a go at some point! My guess with the new trains is that they'll keep the night service but it'll be all sitting cars - that's what happened to the Sunlander when it was replaced by a new Tilt Train set.

Great video. ScotRail has recently reintroduced the Class 43 on some routes; I've used it quite a few times travelling between Aberdeen and Inverness. I have to say the Australian standard class carriages look a bit better than hours but our First Class have a major upgrade. No buffet service for us though; we occasionally get a trolley service but it's pretty basic.

Well of course we want to see you do the sleeper XPT 👍 Last time I caught an XPT was between Syd and Coota in 2020. Hadn't been on one since the 90s. First class seats no real difference, and the seat constantly moved from being reversed so many times. The train felt worn out but the service from all train crew was brilliant. Clearly loved their jobs. As an aside, look up Anthony Ronaldson's Dubbo XPT cabride play list from 2004 uploaded 12 years ago. Not only does the driver give a rundown of what-does-what in the cab and other aspects of XPT running and infrastructure, but his commentary that delves into his thoughts about the politics and decline in railways in NSW from the perspective of a veteran railwayman is both entertaining and enlightening. His thoughts regarding privatisation, cutbacks and outsourcing probably hold true for Vic as well.

I did the Melbourne to Sydney sleeper service in Feb, and it was... I'll say I'm not in a hurry to get on this thing again. It was probably one of the worst sleeps of my life, largely due to all the loud metallic groaning, think it was the bogies or something. And I guess being on the top bunk and not weighing very much myself, rather than being rocked to sleep, I'd describe it as more being violently jostled on a lot of track sections. Just about fell out 😂 (And that's not even mentioning the feeble old toilet/shower). So yeah, basically what you'd expect from old stock I guess.
It was a difficult 5am start the next morning to say the least 😅
The only reason I'd consider doing it again is getting off at Central I felt was just a way nicer and convenient way to arrive in Sydney. As opposed to trying to get out of and leave the airport

    • @Martindyna
      @Martindyna ปีที่แล้ว +2

The carriages have needed a major overhaul of their suspension for years it seems, they need to be lifted off their bogies and the bearing parts replaced / lubricated.
The train is held back by lack of maintenance of the track too, it should be possible to do 160 km/hr much more of the time.

I'm surprised they haven't moved forward on that. The sleeping births are quite comfortable, as long as you got the cabin to yourself. The sleeper births also have power plugs in them. So Tablet and Phone Chargers are OK.. They couldn't do Laptops..

Your video reminded me of an amazing layout I once saw at The Brick Pit trains show (that's now no longer ) of the Bethungra Spiral. I liked you little stab at Qantas. As for me I struggle why in Australia we have running as 'fast trains' a design that's now a museum piece in the UK. Something here is choking the whole rail network for decades now. Now it wouldn't have anything to do with the strong link between the Government and Qantas. Now there's a video idea for you.

I recently took the night XPT, economy to Sydney. Apart from the rough ride (which you can see at 8:00. Wow!) which I was expecting, to be honest, my major complaint is the space. I don't know what skinny poms the seating dimensions were based on, but someone as broad shouldered as me (not much broader than average, mind you) was literally jammed in between the wall and my fellow passenger, who was smart enough to swap seats with me to the isle seat early in the journey.
One more odd complaint. I was in the first carriage, and while it was otherwise quiet, every time we went through a tunnel the noise of the diesel would reflect back down into the carriage. In fact, the rough ride was doing something similar, being smooth in sections, and then rough. Leading to the situation where you would be able to sleep for a few minutes, but then we're suddenly either shaken or shouted awake by the train. It didn’t make for a great night's sleep, and the first thing I did on arriving at Central was down an energy drink and a Mars bar.
Next time, I will definitely be booking a cabin.

Rode the XPT night service Melbourne to Sydney in January 2023. Hadn't done that route since the days of the Southern Aurora. No sleepers on the Monday night service; so we sat up all night in what was supposedly a first class carriage, which was full all the way.
Compared to comfort and dining on the old Southern Aurora train of the 1960s-70s the XPT service was a disgrace. We halted for long stop as someone had stolen the copper wires between Wandong and Kilmore East... thought they were going to transfer us onto buses but luckily that didn't happen.

Now we have the Metro up & running. All we need now are new XPTs all around. And I would like to see a difference between 1st Class & Economy. Not just in price. Better seats. Maybe some Single seats as well. A food carriage for 1st Class & Sleepers so you don't have to walk all the way through the train to get food.

Showers in the sleeper can only be used on the night train.
With the late and over budget CAF replacement railcars, they won't have a sleeper in each set unless the new NSW government takes the unlikely step of modifying the contract.
There's no intention that I've heard of to cancel the overnight services, but at this stage one will be forced to sit up.
The bureaucrats sure ensured that the new trains won't be innovative. No couchette-type design that could be used night and day. Apparently the seating is suitable for 150 kilometre European journeys but allegedly poor for Australian 960km ones.

The only way a proper (and fast) Hi speed rail service will *ever* happen in this country between Melb and Syd is just like when they 1st put in rail in the 1800's! That is One state starts first and there is a "race" to the border...! On that note I think Victoria should begin NOW with Hi Speed rail to Albury. We are NEVER going to get the State NSW government or those "in Canberra" to *ever* focus on Victoria and the need for a proper rail service between our 2 biggest cities. Just MO!

A tip: if you want a standard long distance train to get to its destination faster ditch the freight! I travelled from Melbourne to Sydney in the 80s we were stopped at Goulburn for about 40 minutes loading and unloading mail parcels and other freight! A passenger train should only carry a small amount of freight intended for its final destination! If it's meant for anywhere else send it on a cargo train! Passenger trains for passengers. Cargo trains for cargo. It's simple common sense!!!!
