I have the avantone mix cubes and the gaus 7’s hooked up to them. I got them to use analog summing and the end of my mox down however I am waiting for the new Mac mini to come out to use them. *sigh

    Yes Touchtone, Fantastic video well constructed and highly informative. I really think you got it covered in a way that is honest in the pros and cons. I’m looking forward to seeing a beat made in the mpc then routing it through the ssl big six and finishing it with the fusion. That little intro you did was really original too and your video work is on point. Love this video. Just took delivery of mine this week. It’s unreal. The routing from the DAW is so intuitive and small moves on the EQ and the Bus Comp go a long, long way. Recall is easy if you print stems back in to the DAW along with the 2-bus. Then you can bring them back on the faders at unity gain if you need to tweak.

    Hey, I just had to drop a comment to thank you for the tip on using USB 15/16 for audio from my computer. I was using one of my line level channels, but this works much better, and I can still use my external headphone amp on ST Cue 1 by selecting Ext 1 in the ST Cue 1 Master section. Works like a charm. This is awesome dude. Not enough reviewers talk *specifically* about how they use their stuff and how they make it work for them. “This has 26#3 ins and outs with 500 separate usb x routing options” (🤨) is too much of a blank slate sometimes. Great review! When the original Six came out there was a video series from SSL where they were recording and mixing a track with Goldn which totally blew my mind how much flexibility existed in that tiny mixer. Big Six is next level and I could only imagine how much versatility this mixer brings to the writing, producing, and engineering aspects of a session.

    Great review! People remember, this is a CONSOLE! Most of you have NEVER tracked and mixed on console before. For $3K you are getting a SSL console/interface. There is nothing you can compare this too at this time. And I love the fact that you have to commit! That’s the way it should be done. Committing trains your ears and builds your confidence. Just ordered 4 of these for our home and project studio. We already have the 4K and Matrix. If you are a SSL fan, GET IT! You will not be disappointed. Again, great JOB on the review TouchTone and thank you SSL! Been rocking with SSL for over 30 years! And for those of you that do Rock, Jazz, Gospel and R&B … in other words .. tracking REAL analog instruments and then mix.. YOU WILL LOVE the experience! No offense to Trap, or todays Hip Hop, but the real experience is tracking through this. The preamps, conversion is GREAT.

      @TouchToneDSG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man I totally 100% agree with you I think they have to wrap their heads around this being a consult and understanding that once that happens I think you really start to get the power of this machine and you make great points with gospel R&B and tracking other instruments through this the preamp‘s are phenomenal and no offense taken at all music is subjective and I love it all thanks for tapping and I love talking to people that actually understand it

I know you touched a bit on it in the video, but I’m confused how you’re using the UC1 and UF8 when the BigSix is EQ’ing and Compressing then summing everything back into the daw. When would you be using the UC1? i can understand the UF8 because it’s controlling the daw but maybe a bit confused on the UC1. Is the UF8 used for the mixing features? UC1?

    I have two BigSix running as aggregated devices on macox so I have double the channels in Ableton. Combining different devices in aggregated mode can be hassle if they have different specs, but with 2 x BigSix it is just running flawless because they are the same and I was told that they made some kind of firmware feature that makes the two work together easyer. I can't find anything about that on their site though so I don't know if it is true of not. But they work perfectly together. They get warm alright, but I never had any breaking down because of it and mine are running 24/7 for over a year now. I bought it to replace 19" quantum 2626 + ferrofish pulse 16 etc and I am happy I did so. Sound is at least as clean. It does take up extra space, but the hands-on mixing is just much easyer at the end of the day. For me anyway. I am only a hobbyist so take my inputs with that in mind 🙂

      very Good point. He was referencing the old UAD stuff. I have the Apollo x8P and it sounds great. I have also worked with the SSL Six, and the Apollo has its own character and sound. I think the Six also has its own character and they are both good. I think the Apollo x8P has a slight edge on the sound and that I think has to do with the variety of plug-ins. I think this mixer would add to the work flow and the overall sound.

    I don’t have experience with outboard mixers, but if your using the rack mount console unit what benefit are you getting by pushing your channels out to this mixer? I thought that having the rack console was the equivalent of having the mixer? Also are you using the ssl plugins as well? Is there a big difference in sound quality versus the physical gear? I am in the box with my mixing gear and I am learning about the differences between the tonal sounds of the plugins. I understand that physical gear has a harmonic quality due to the electrical current variations. I see those differences in my physical synths, but I don’t understand your setup because of the rack pieces you have already.

      Man that's great to hear SSL is a fantastic company and I love the Frontiers they are sooooo worth it 😁

    • @stevencirile
      @stevencirile 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was skeptical of the frontiers marketing. I also own the desk which is amazing for my space. But Jesus the point source up close fantastic.
      I’m using a hardwired setup for my limited hardware incorporated into the big six. One thing. I’m doing is (Mixbus32c software for mixing-as it has integrated 12 mix bus’s) using cue 1 as my sends in mixdown mode to the g bus comp. So each stem can have varied degree of impact on its operations to the two track summed mix. Ie the concern of the side chain being fixed at to low a frequency- back off the send on kicks-bass somewhat will help that cause. Or I use the inserts available on 1-4 to patch in a separate compressor to deal with it and send nothing to the g bus for those tracks. It’s a push button engage option-send cue 1 to bus comp. My cue 2 is sending signal to a hardware reverb to use for ‘taste’ or not on the individual stems.
      Mastering M Bus Insert-fixed chain as I don’t own the flock patch…one day. I still plan on final sweetening eq and other plugins in the daw master bus insert to complete the 2 track sum mix. Slate all in pack I own. Some good stuff there for sure. Also IK Sunset Sound Studio Reverb is a must for rock/pop/r and b. I’ll be purchasing the Fame Studio version to. I did purchase an aphex 204 exciter, magic box out of production, used them in the 80’s, forgot how good it is used ‘sparingly’ very important sparingly. If you get a chance to use one you won’t part with it.
      For my tracking setup I will disengage the usb function on Big Six, and use it as part of front end into my RME UFX Plus-a you can’t beat this quality interface-tracking with Cubase for stability reasons. It’s bulletproof. Zero latency monitoring with totalmix. If you haven’t tried Mixbus32c for Mixing..I suggest you get the demo and do so. It just sounds good -better than cubase to my ears and it’s a console. K14 metering system-eqs that are amazing. The 12 mix bus setup as integrated to mixer and so on. I find I do not need many plugins anymore, literally just a few on the mix buses. And master bus.

    Great review. I am going to the UC1 this week and have been eyeballing the big six. I come from 2" 24 track big format console (SSL, Amek, Soundcraft) for my first 20 years and for the past 10 years, DAW and an interface. I do miss the tactile control vs mouse / keyboard... not to mention (which you did) about building a 500 series system... my thought was to have the ability to insert gear as needed in both tracking and mixing (my plan would be to use the big six as a summing system). Question: I currently own the Six and I see that you can cascade the two mixers by taking the outputs of the Six and injecting them into the Big Six.
    However, let's say you were summing a mix from your DAW and wanted to use both mixers to have the extra channels for summing, how would you get the DAW to output signal into the Six as well? If you are using the Big Six as the interface, is there a way to get some of the channels from the DAW into the Six? I assume it would require a separate interface but the Big six has no optical in/outs to cascade with another interface. Is there a workaround for this or can you only use the Big Six by itself for summing mixes?
