      I for one was there for all of it. It was my first caucus ever (I’m 19). And I, along with the other 164 people in my precinct spent the entire time marveling at how fucking stupid the caucus system is.

    • @ryanbrantley275
      @ryanbrantley275 4 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      It was my first Caucus and it was ridiculously confusing and skewed. Why only have it on one day at one specific time? Why wasnt the importance of delegate explained better? I had to do this on my lunch break, most of the people that would have voted for my candidate were working at 7pm. Biden supporters were more elderly types I noticed, they weren't working evening shifts so they were well represented. Why do they have us all herded like cattle in a gymnasium and yelling and carrying on? Why couldn't we walk in at anytime during that day and push a button in a booth and grab a sticker saying "I Caucused for so and so" and then go about our day? Why did the DNC choose a tech software company called "Shadow Inc" to make this app? Have they never seen a Bond movie? All very confusing and maybe that's the point. George Carlin was right, this country was bought and paid for a long time ago by the 1% and we only have the illusion of control.

As a German I want to see Bernie win and implement things my party (the Social Democratic Party of Germany) and other European parties have been implementing the last 100 years, but if the Democratic population of America does not want to choose him like they didn't want in 2016, even after knowing how fatal the selection of Clinton had been to progressive and young voters, that is their decision. There might have been unfair barriers for Bernie in 2016, but looking at the numbers he would never have had a realistic chance to win the nomination, I thought 4 years of Trump would have changed that with Democratic voters, but they still seem to be too afraid to choose real change over "bipartisan electibility".

      +Brandon Pennington Then you don't understand the purpose. The nation has switched left since the last election as seen by the expansion of the blue wall. If Hillary is the nominee and everyone who leans left votes for her, than she will win by a landslide. If we agree to unite behind the nominee then the DNC can stick their fingers in their ears and force through a crap candidate who supports their interests. This system is an affront to democracy, we are basically picking the president though the nomination, if the DNC controls the nomination (which they do because it's private not public) then they control the presidency.
      The only way to fight this is to disregard party lines and vote for who you think is best. I'm not saying that I have the guts to vote Trump and potentially destroy the nation, but that is the rationale.

      I was unable to vote in the year 2000, as I was only 14. Otherwise I would have done my damnedest to make sure McCain won the Republican primary, even if I wasn't his biggest fan. When Bush won the primary, I knew the Republican party had fucked itself into a corner, because it wasn't listening to the larger general populous, but only the extremists in its party. I registered as Democrat in 2004 to make sure I could vote in those primaries. (And cried when Kerry lost because fucking hell 4 more years of Bush...) In 2008 I thought Obama stood NO chance of winning over Republican voters, so I voted Clinton. I was ecstatic when he won. Both times. And I remembered that it wasn't Republicans he had to win, it was independents. And there are a lot more independents than people realize. Mainly because they don't bother with primaries because primaries suck. In 2012 I was flabbergasted that the Republicans were even going through with the pretense of the primaries as drawn out as they were, especially since anyone with half a brain could say "Romney won because he was the only one who didn't look out of touch with actual reality" but I realized it wasn't about reality for them, it was just about media and money. The more they could drag it out, the more they could get the names repeatedly out there into the public mind and they had begun to cater to parrots with buzzwords, while not really understanding buzzwords themselves. That is why they lost.
      My fiance voted Green party in 2012. I was too scared to. I've had my issues with Obama not doing "enough" in my mind, but still, Ralph Nader's effects on 2000 are more fresh in my mind than most people my age (since my Dad got me into politics when I was only 4....) He's braver and bolder than I am, however. "It's because everyone thinks they're locked into only those two choices that no one votes for what they actually want." That's true. And I don't want to live in a world that only ever picks "least disliked of above." We can do better.
      This year I'm Bernie or Bust. Why? I mean I VOTED Clinton in the 2008 primaries, after all, and surely I don't want the Trumpocolypse, right?
      But I learned from all those elections. And the biggest thing I learned was that the greater populous counts the most. Always. No matter what crazy thing they want. Republicans fucked themselves into the corner, not just this year or even last year, or even 8 years ago, but as early as 2000. (Well a little earlier too, because bringing Clinton up on impeachment charges actually set the stage for Hillary to get to this popularity.... but ehhhh) Because they didn't listen to what the greater populous wanted. They started ostracizing minorities back then, and forgot that *all* votes matter.
      I don't want a Honda. I'm not going to be talked into buying a car I don't want just because I'm worried about getting the last car in the rental lot.
      I'm not Bernie or Bust, but it's time to break up the parties, they're no longer serving the people, and that was the only point to them to begin with.

      +1309i US was a democracy under the Articles of confederation. The articles failed because it gave too much power to states and the general public. This lead to import taxes between states, multiple currencies, mismanagement of said currencies (simply printing more money to pay state debts) or choosing to ignore international debts all together. Point being, whatever undemocratic processes we have exist because as a public we weren't responsible, educated or smart enough to be trusted with that kind of power. +MrChow408 and that's not going to happen, not because of corruption, but because there's no precedent for similar cases being indicted.(I can find the article on this if you want it) Even then, that's just the indictment. There'd be a court case, and the Clintons have good lawyers. also, closed vs open primaries is a huge debate without an easy answer, because parties ARE private institutions.

    • @MagicSandwich27
      @MagicSandwich27 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Out of the 14 Open primaries Hillary Clinton has won 10 to Bernie's 4. Where Bernie actually does best is in Closed Caucuses which are the least Democratic because other than being closed they take place at specific times and take hours from start to finish which can be an incredible inconvenience. Navada is the only case where you can argue Bernie could've won if more people were allowed. Also as far as Superdelegates are concerned, if you took already all of Hillary's away and let Bernie keep his; he'd still be behind by over 200. I know I'll be hearing shit for this because I have seen Bernie supporters in action, but the truth is that while Sanders supporters may be louder and Senator Sanders himself may draw a bigger crowd, Clinton is drawing the bigger vote.

    To clarify/summarize John Oliver's point in this video (since a lot of folks seem to be mistaken):
    The primary process is set up by political parties, which are technically private organizations, which is why the process can get very convoluted and in some cases, seem entirely un-democratic. The primary process wasn't set up by the Founding Fathers or anything, they're systems that were created by each political party to choose the candidate which could best win the presidential election. It's super confusing, and both parties could do a much better job of setting up a better system. Yes, it might seem that the process then favors establishment candidates (duh, of course it would). So if we want to change the system, let's write an email on February 2nd.
    Any other thoughts?

    • @leeduon8012
      @leeduon8012 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's well said. I actually don't think the party nomination process should be entirely Democratic, but definitely more so than what we have now. I think if it becomes entirely democratized, we risk being too subject to the whims of populism, which as we've seen can be a bad as well as a good thing.

    • @CinnamonMuffinz
      @CinnamonMuffinz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Right. The presidential election is where the question "Is this democratic?" becomes very important. But parties could choose their candidates through a variety of ways, and obviously they've decided that it's best to balance out who the party voters like and vote for, and who would really be the best candidate to carry forth their party's agenda. Being popular isn't everything.

      What if we played a game of basketball and the whole time I was pushing tripping elbowing and flopping. Yet the refs don't say a thing while the crowd screams for justice while the refs and the league say tough luck you were outplayed. It's disingenuous.

Ignorance of the electoral process cannot be an excuse for voters to later on criticise everyone including John if their candidate is having a bad time . We could, for example, criticise John for talking about pennies rather than this segment on his season 2 finale episode.. But still, how would that have changed the process of the 2 parties? To change this kind of election reform requires a long protest/campaign before the elections and requires intervention at the top level of both parties.. To get that done is not easy..

They DESPERATELY do not want people to feel the BERN....so...even with a liberal host like John Oliver..they will not allow him to slant it any other way besides "everything is bad" instead of the truth of how bad Hillary is. You will never see that in the mainstream media, the only way for Bernie is to WIN VOTES, as he will never "win" the media from the billionaires. Sadly that's down to more voters being comfortable with a familiar politician then a bolder one. I realllly want Bernie to win and I furious about this whole thing; but John Oliver's just stating the facts. In other episodes as he has stated, they have no sponsors which is why he can say what he wants. To then come out after all his shows, actually state that this election is safe and come back on groundhog day? What happened to..."do it now people!" ? As a man that has started revolutions, We are scheduling revolutions? Smh Why would the DNC change anything then? She was Hillary's campaign manager the last election. Do you really want to give that power to a man who promotes hatred?
      War is a bad movie no one wants to see.
      People pay to suffer through it, the actors get paid for it and the producers get paid to make it.
      Who will that war be with and who is forced to back it or clean up the mess?

      +Amina Merchant That's a MAJOR point. Yes, Hillary has more votes than Bernie--because in many states Independents are not allowed to vote. Add in all the Independent voters who couldn't vote--most of whom would vote for Bernie--and I think you'd see a very different result. Add in Independent voters, and I truly believe Bernie would be ahead.

That’s how we have 20+ years of this thugcracy

    john couldn't have predicted the comment section better. incoherent arguments from Bernie supporters accusing john of supporting the primary process which Hillary won, when his whole point is that it needs to be more inclusive and reformed. but Bernie supporters understanding of most things is skin deep and pseudo intellectual. maybe 18 trillion dollars in debt isn't the best time for a socialist revolution.

      I've never really heard a bias from him. Everyone acts like he's got one but I don't see it. He was just stating facts. Even when he was "bashing" trump in the "drumph" episode he was just asking everyone to consider the facts behind what trump was claiming.
      Skin deep and pseudo intellectual are opposites. But honestly any supporter with heightened emotions who know little on the subject can contribute by smashing their face on the keyboard. Happens in both parties with any candidate.

I get that they have to weave in jokes, but was it necessary to focus solely on Bernie supporters, as if we're the only ones who have overzealous individuals among us. That's just my opinion, maybe I'm mis-perceiving because of my political views.

And he's forestalling rage at him over it. He hasn't said he favored one or the other based on their merits. The only candidate he has openly condemned is Trump because Trump is a special case of a joke candidate. Hillary is normal politics bad; Trump is a whole different ball game of dangerous/moronic.
