What if it's like the movie momento and everything he said is true and he's a good guy but she just never trusts him so she writes these notes that reinforces her suspicions and paranoia.

My theory is that Thomas was actually telling the truth and the reason he smirks at the end is because he’s one step closer to getting her to retain her memories. I mean the last attempt was nearly successful apart from the alarm messing everything up at the end. He’s changed the environment to avoid it triggering her past memories of her believing he kidnapped her and changed it for a hospital room which immediately makes you feel safer. This means that he knows how to get her to remember and if for whatever reason the alarm or any other thing triggers her she is less likely to respond violently (stabbing him again) because she believes that she is safe in a hospital rather than kidnapped by a stranger.

I like the theory that Thomas was just plain evil and that he was just a neighbor who grew up with her and stalked her because he loved her and she didn’t love him. The idea of an unreliable narrator is always an interesting concept that this movie seems to play with really well. Is he good or bad? Who knows in the end.

The whole alarm reaction thing was probably because she was classically conditioned to react that way whenever she heard that alarm. It’s not necessarily that her brain had a reset, rather, it’s because her brain associated that sound to a situation and an action.

I actually went and watched the movie, and he doesn't smirk at the end. He does look into the camera, but he doesn't take off his mask. I think he was looking into the camera like, "here we go again" kinda exasperated... And it wasn't mentioned here, but she erases her message to herself saying "don't trust him" and she writes a new note to herself saying "play along". So I don't think her brain got reset by the alarm, I think she planned the whole thing. 🤷♀️

The whole time you were explaining the ending my mind just kept going back to the dont trust him note. I feel like shes been through that before. I feel like she trusted him before and believed his story about the whole amnesia thing and then at one point she got a memory of the hospital scene so she wrote a note to herself in case it would happen again.

She might feel it as soon as she wakes up, and it either serves as a trigger she keeps to herself, or she understands that it's a possible weapon she has to keep secret.

My theory is that he’s experimenting on her and he is learning more about the hipa part of the brain 🧠
So now the new scene is he’s a doctor saving her and the story continue but now a different scene..... because he’s a real kidnapper and that’s his way from being bored..... omg creepy....
The ending scene is just him repeating the process all over again, I don‘t know why Stephanie said that he smirks, he clearly doesn’t look happy, he looks more like ,,oh, shit, here we go again‘‘ (sorry for the Language). While the female lead was lap dancing, he told her the story and how he also tried many ways of bringing her memories back, but neither worked. Now, at the end, he will just try another method. And the thing with her dreaming about drowning, was a real memory that probably happened in a past attempt of escaping with the boat. Hope this makes it a bit more clear.

No one gonna talk about her flashback of their anniversary dinner??? He didn't tell her anything about it, or about the food. That's a flashback she got from the food. That has to have happened. So I think, they in fact were in a relationship. Then either the story is somewhat correct of her being assaulted and him bringing her there to regain the memories etc. Or maybe he himself was 'Nick', meaning there may be no Nick, but he himself assaulted her. But then I don't get why he would present her with those things that can trigger her memory. Very tricky tbh. And the part in the beginning where he tells her things about her, I was sure that it was him brainwashing her. But yeah you end up with confusion and thinking if he is good or bad! This reminds me of a book I read (I forgot the name) but it’s about a man pretending to be the main characters husband and every morning she forgets everything(she had been in an accident). Then she finds out she has been meeting a docter in secret. And got a diary from her so she might remember more. With this she finds out that there is sumn fishy about her “husband” and so on and on. The only reason it reminded me of it is because of the part where ruby forgets everything every day and she puts notes down for her future self.

I agree with Stephiance I think he is spot on with his theory that the boyfriend is good and telling the truth and his own methods of conditioning her turns on him when his alarm goes off. I think the ‘don’t trust him’ just reinforces how far gone she can get and how hard he worked to get her back. It mirrors the book "Shutter Island" which was later made into a movie with Leonardo Dicaprio. Every time the guy remembers (the trauma), his amnesia/new brain story kicks in. He, himself, triggers his own amnesia because that is his way of protecting himself because he cannot deal with what he did in real life. That took place on an island also.

alright i have a theory of the last part: Ok, so definately for sure when the Alarm went off, it difinately triggered something inside of her to completely forget especially considering that she craws up the starirs when at this point in the movie she could use them, Ok so the part about thomas smiling into the camera is really confusing ,it could means a load of things I think that Thomas Knows that she remembers the phycological/physical trauma ruby went through involving him being a bad guy, so like stalking her, the part where Ruby stabs him, after the alarm goes off , could potentially show a the memory on what really happen, for ruby, so like a trigger, and although Ruby quickly forgets her legs work, her brain /gut just wants to show her one of her most traumatic memories, Thomas smiling could be an indication that he knew that specific memory was going to come out but he didnt want her brain to think much of it, since she "loves him" Maybe since she remembers it so heavily he has to kill her, this could be a heavy conclusin especially since he says he ready alot of books about amnesia , and there a potential others...- I think that the match stick code reflecting off the mirror for 'don't trust him' could be heavily relied on the fact that at one point ruby did do a full recover and realised exactly what was going on, but thomas eventually re-set her memory
