You do an excellent job with your videos, Eric. I always seem to learn from them. I've been admiring the 52 for a long time, but, dang you, Eric! With this video you as good as reached in my hip pocket, extracted my credit card & ordered one for me!! Trust me, I will forever blame you to my wife for my having spent so much money!
Great information on the Icom ID-52! I would consider that a bug in the software that Icom should fix to connect to Bluetooth from the iPhone settings, like all other Bluetooth settings. But it’s good that you found a work around to Icom’s software bug. It’s good that you can make all those setting changes with the app and the iPhone. But to get to the next level, so that you can do all that with just the ID-52, then the ID-52 should have all that built into the radio, and the ID-52 would need to be able connect to WiFi directly. The screen on the ID-52 would probably need to be larger. Then you’d only need one device, with no dependency on the iPhone as a secondary device. Then if the ID-52 could connect to WiFi directly, you wouldn’t need a hotspot RF device. You could just connect to the WiFi at home, your iPhone WiFi hotspot in the car, to connect to reflectors, if there isn’t a repeater nest you, or you want to use a distant repeater. It would also be a big enhancement if you could connect to other format reflectors, other than D-Star, like you could with an OpenSpot RF hotspot, with the ID-52 alone. So, I can imagine the drastic improvements that could be made to the ID-52, or Icom’s replacement for the ID-52. Dave KY0L
Thanks for the video. Do you happen to know WHERE on the phone the app exported the repeater list TO on an iPhone ? I can't find it anywhere, including in "Files" where you'd expect it (including in "Downloads"). Thanks. PS.. at least regarding the IC-705 (which the app also works for), the Import function only imports to the app's list, it doesn't update the 705's list. Export doesn't send it there either.
A great hand held but for this heavy Price I expected it to come with APRS. Great Docu, Eric. Keep up the Good Work & happy Sunday to you and yours. 73 de YFUG 💯🍻🙋♂
Great video. I would buy an ID52 if it had better BT integration but will stick with my ID51E Plus 2 for now (the audio is great). I need to use a data cable but can use the app pretty much as described. 73.
Can you download firmware updates etc with the app? Otherwise you need RT systems mac version to load things like that??? Would be great if the app could do it.
Is there any way to completely control the radio by an app? For example changing the frequencies by the app and not just repeaters. Also waterfall display? Why isn't that on the app?
Has the app functionality been updated for the ID-5100? Or do you still have to use the computer and SD card? What happened to all of your videos on the ID-5100??
I'm thinking about getting this radio to replace my gs-5b, I saw a video where gs-5b failed the spurious emissions test. My concern is the repeater database not being maintained, if I want to add a lot of repeaters to the 52 would it be fast and easy?
So I just got mine and I’m trying to find nearby FM Repeater’s and it says there is none in my area we have approximately 12 in my area. Any idea what’s wrong you’re only show me digital and I don’t have any digital in my area.
So I’m thinking of getting this. I see there is no d-star near me. I really like the radio and hope to be moving soon…. I guess I should ask would it be ok outside in the rain? Is it easy to program analog repeaters also via the app? Thanks 73
When I do the app steps, it seems to only update the repeater list in the app. It never sends it to the radio. Are you sure that’s actually updating the radio?
Can you show the app actually update the repeater database in the radio? It will not do it for me, the documentation doesn’t list it as a feature? Also talked to several others with the same issue.
This is a nice and positive video, so I don't want to complain too much, but a few things mentioned in the video are not really nicely explained: The "your call sign" thing is a bit confusing. When you're talking to me (the viewer) and saying something to the effect of: "You can set up your call sign", that might lead me to incorrectly believe that I can set up my call sign with the application. Instead, the application (and the radio itself) is speaking from my point of view: My (that is to say the operator's) call sign is called "My call sign", and your call sign (KJ4YZI, for example) is called "Your call sign". So the Your call sign is an address book, and not my own call sign. It can also be used to memorize the call sign and various suffixes, like A, B, C, G, and so on, for various repeater functions. I haven't seen an option in the application to set up My call sign. When I go to the DR option in the application, and click on To setting, I can choose Your call sign as one of the sources, and then, select a call sign from the "Your call sign" list. The handy repeater list update option which was demonstrated in the video is not for the radio, but for the application itself. The radio and application have separate repeater lists, but their default contents are the same. For example, I programed a number of local repeaters, which are not on Icom's list, and my gateway, into the radio, and they do not show up in the application.
I just bot a 52a and have a galaxy 51a phone - WILL NOT connect to phone. I INITIALIZE Bluetooth did not work that way. But cant get the Regular Bluetooth settings display back?? oops - I dont think ICOMs app is usable so far. I dont get how it works so well on ur Devices. Bummer - may go RTS the easier way.
Love my 52 but found the app to be buggy and not very useful at all. Android version would only connect for about 2 seconds and then fail on one of my devices. The other device did finally work but was still very difficult to pair. IOS version paired and connected just fine but they require you to use a windows computer (with Itunes) to update the DB. And even after all that, it won't let you use the phone as a remote mic. Icom should hire the BlueDV guy to fix it or come out with a true remote app.
Why would I want to send a photo from phone, through ham radio, back to wifi/LTE ? Wouldn't using data like mobile LTE or wifi defeat the purpose of using a radio?
I can see the picture sharing ability being especially useful for ARES/RACES ops in the aftermath of an earthquake/tornado/hurricane/blizzard or other sort of wide area disaster. For regular use, maybe not so interesting. Bathroom selfies are for cellphones, not HAMs. 🙄
I just bought an ID-52A. It’s amazing and cheaper than my cellphone. 😂 Seriously, how much did you pay for a cellphone. This rig should last 20 years for less.

Sorry, but I am guilty from tons of people LOL
Love your channel. Just bought this radio. Can't wait for it to get here. Thanks for all the informative videos I appreciate it a lot!!!
Nice seeing my old stomping ground show up in your list of repeaters lol.. grew up in Brevard County

Dang it Eric - I'm also going to purchase. You're video's are top notch mate! 73 de GI8WFA.
Danke für das tolle Video.73,von Jozef,Wien.Österreich.😊😊😊
Once again Eric, excellent and very informative video!
Got it Working, Still need to get use to this App,
I have the BT on my mobile ID5100. The APP update of the repeater list was very useful traveling to Hamvention.

Hello, TY for your time & video
Do I read from the radio FIRST then make CPS changes? Then I read back to the radio RIGHT? 🙊
Great radio but the most important feature to me is APRS, DPRS does not cut it. I love the repeater listing function though.
Great video. I would buy an ID52 if it had better BT integration but will stick with my ID51E Plus 2 for now (the audio is great). I need to use a data cable but can use the app pretty much as described. 73.
Certainly a great radio. Its on my wish list, thanks for the info.👍
Great video, Eric, thank you!
Great work,,!,
I do not have a windows computer, does the app load firmware?
I'm going to get one of these! I have the Alinco DJ-MD5X!
Can you download firmware updates etc with the app? Otherwise you need RT systems mac version to load things like that??? Would be great if the app could do it.
Great video

What/how did you do to get them to do that MARS CAP Mod for free?
Has the app functionality been updated for the ID-5100? Or do you still have to use the computer and SD card? What happened to all of your videos on the ID-5100??

It is IPX7 rated for outdoor.
Can You Use this app to Transmit terminal on the Ic 52?
Haven’t tried yet
Just did a quick look in apples app store and the closest i see is RS MS1i. Is it possible its been renamed or later version?
Same app just updated
Thanx for a great review vid, Eric. Yours are the best because there’s none of the Hollywood intros and livestreams with talking heads.
When I do the app steps, it seems to only update the repeater list in the app. It never sends it to the radio. Are you sure that’s actually updating the radio?
Thus app also work with the Kenwood D75A,
My 52a rebooting turning on BT. I am running version 1.23 and BT 1.12. Do you have any suggestions to it working?
Are you telling me that I can connect to an analog repeater in Orlando and tx out of an analog repeater in Vero?
So can u program it with out having to use computer to make your list
Thanks
Could only find the RS-MS1I in the App Store. Is this the same app?
same here. The app shown in the video doesn't appear in the App store
nice job

Wow, a great video...but I can't believe I'm the first to view it(?)😲as always, thanks for ur reviews👍🇺🇸😃
Will the app work for Android
Did they change the app? Can’t find it on IOS….
I found it. Might be new
but you can't use the phone to TX?
Isn't it illegal to transmit over gmrs with this radio?

ID52A plus is not working with this App,

You did not pay attention to the video.. pictures are sent radio to radio, NO CELLULAR OR WIFI USED..... 😔
This is Why I like the Japanese Brands,
Hello Eric KJ4YZI
great videos
73
Can we get a update please?
Yup.. I'll send one tonorrow
Great video. I have it on my wish list with HRO... KN6PWH.... 73
only works in normal mode not terminal mode

I do not seem to find this on the iOS App store, so I guess this feature is limited to Android. Way to go iCom. Hire an iOS coder please 🤔
I found it in the apple
App Store

They Removed the Repeater map,
Has a lanyard, still drops radio
Look at you looking like it’s cold in Florida or something lol
Watch the video uploading now, im sweating my ass off LOL
Don't be admitting on the internet to transmitting on a radio not allowed out of band, mister. "They" are watching.
May have to get off my wallet YZI !
This App don't work,
Your comments about MARS/CAP mod and using the radio at work are a bit concerning.
Thanks
