I think it just comes down to if your a prosumer or a professional. I’m in complete love with my S1H and did mountains of research before buying it. It’s truly for professional filmmakers who use manual lenses. As these new cameras have come out over the past 2 years, while they share the same price point, they fail to reach the same potential as the S1H, with or without the ninja V. The S1H is in a strange spot, as it’s a cinema camera in a mirrorless body, so consumers are confused why this camera has poor autofocus, complex layouts, and a deep settings menu. I still consider it the absolute best camera for owner operators who shoot professionally in that price range, but the a7s iii is more for prosumers who don’t need to worry about timecode, 10 bit 422, anamorphic, and the insane amount of other features the S1H provides. If you include the ninja v into the discussion, the canon and Sony series cameras fail in comparison for cinema workflows. The a7s iii is great for youtubers and filmmakers who don’t desire to work on a set in cinema, and the S1H is great for filmmakers who don’t desire to make TH-cam videos or free short projects.
Despite being almost 2 years old now, the S1H still hasn’t been beat in its cinema-mirrorles category. The c70 can’t shoot raw and is s35, the a7s iii can’t shoot raw or even true cine 4K, the r5 is a joke, the sony fx 3 is just the a7s iii. A good camera to compare the S1H to is really the canon C series, the black magic series, and even the red Komodo.
Tldr: comparing these two cameras is like comparing a forklift to a Ferrari, they are made for different people.
    Loved the video!

Great conversation. As a S1H-owner weith a ton of Canon glass I still dream of the C70. But as much as I adore the autofocus and the 4k-slow motion on the Canon and Sony I would miss the IBIS and the color-science on the S1H. I would even say the Lumix has a more Canon-5D-look than the new Canons themselves.

Great video! The main advantages that I don't see as subjective are:
S1H - low pass filter and the ability to turn NR to almost completely off. It's still there but very minimal when turned off. The NR on the Sony is pretty bad and can't be turned off.
A7S3 - autofocus (obviously), and catalyst.
As you said, they seem like they target different people - for weddings and events - A7S3 - no question. For more narrative stuff, I'd prefer the S1H.

My main work has been in a fixed position at the back of a venue filming for up to 2 hours. Doesn't require a lot of focusing, but does need to shoot continuously in high resolution & frame rates eg 4k60p for that amount of time. The S1H is the only mirrorless that can do this.

    Hi Nate, Dustin,
Cool video seeing you both talking about the S1H and S3 from a user’s perspective.
I’m still holding on to my S1H but have a friend who really wants it for his work. I plan on getting rid of it but kept it for all the reasons you’ve both mentioned.
I added the R5 and haven’t ran into overheating yet but if and when I do, I’ll just record externally. The white balance seems to do a better job without much adjustments (than Sony’s R3/R4) and closer with the S1H colors.
Do you find yourself needing to adjust the white balance on the S3 and/or matching it with S1H? Or you just use one camera only for your projects?

    • @nomad0714
      @nomad0714 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@thedavidsurowiecki, hard to say. I like them both.
Key here is if you need autofocus because of your use case like mine, then hands down R5.
If you do studio work and need all the assist tools, S1H is better. For some reason, I prefer the colors of Panasonic but that’s a personal taste.
For IQ, both are really good and you can’t go wrong with either choice. Canon has more lenses (albeit RF lenses are expensive) to select from with adapters for EF lenses.
If you could only select one, I would say R5 but if you do long form shooting and in hot climate, use an external recorder as it will overheat. You can manage it and there’s some hacks but some may void your warranty.
Hope that is helpful. If not, ask some more and good luck!

      1) mist filters on any camera from Tiffen, Polor Pro, Freewell (I use the Glow Mist), and Moment CineBloom; or
      2) edit in post; or
      3) use S1H anamorphic video mode which R5 doesn’t have. If you get R5, you can always stick the mist filter on to get the look I think you’re asking for

The S1H is still the only mirrorless camera on that list. The a7s iii won’t ever get it since it shoots UHD and has subpar cinema settings. Being Netflix approved is really just important for people filming on Netflix, but it’s also a good scale for what is considered a professional cinema camera, which the a7s iii is not, nor is it supposed to be. The S1H is a cinema camera first, and a mirrorless camera second.

I think you should reconsider the S1H. It’s far from “digital looking.” The digital look comes from poor dynamic range, bad codecs, small sensor size, and bad rolling shutter. The S1H has better dynamic range than the a7s iii, has no crop 4k and can shoot open gate 3:2, and with the ninja V can shoot prores raw, but the s1h still has problems with rolling shutter.
The S1H is a true cinema camera, and is far from digital looking since it has an optical low pass filter on top of being technically superior. Af does suck though, but most cine shoots use manual lenses.

    • @nathang7014
      @nathang7014 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MrVh78 I guess I should spend some time giving a more in-depth explanation. The main factors, excluding all equipment besides what is on the camera, like lights, sound, etc, it boils down to these factors. Here are the cameras compared between what makes their sensor "filmic" Dynamic range readings are at a measured SNR of 2 by CineD since all camera companies lie, and the Red Monstro is the only camera with an actual dynamic range of 16 at an SNR of 2.
      A7s III:
      Dynamic range - 12.4
      Sensor size - FF
      Codecs/Croma Subsampling - 422
      Bit depth - 10
Max resolution for video - UHD 4k
      S1h:
      Dynamic range - 12.7
Sensor size - Large Format (open gate 3:2)
      Codecs/Croma Subsampling - 422
      Bit depth - 10
Max resolution for video - 6k
Dynamic range is the single most important spec for a camera to look filmic. Highlight/shadow clipping is a dead giveaway to a cheap digital sensor. The S1h's dynamic range is the second-best measured by CineD, with the first being the ARRI Alexa.
Sensor size allows shallower DOF, and being able to shoot anamorphic 3:2 open gate is a huge deal for cinema.
Codecs are the same, but with the Atomos Ninja V, the S1h can shoot prores raw at 12-bit, which is insane.
Bit depth is the same, but S1h can go to 12 with the Ninja V
Max resolution is the least important factor for the film look, but it's useful for reducing noise with downsampling, making a 6k downsampled image have less digital noise when reduced to 4k. This is essential for filmmakers aimed at the big screen, since 4k is a minimum requirement, and pixel to pixel 4k has too much visible noise. Also, the A7s III cant even shoot true 4k or cine 4k, making it not ideal for film productions.
It's worth noting that V-Log is a fantastic log profile that is only on the S1h, and is used in Varicam cameras. It's also worth noting that the S1h doesn't have a green shift in the shadows like the Sony series, but if you can color correct, this isn't really a problem.
However, all of these specs are useless if you don't understand your camera enough to create a filmic look. While dynamic range is extremely important, lens choice, lighting, and even audio are far more important for the film look. Your right in that the OLPF doesn't really create a film look, but it softens the image and is standard in cinema cameras due to reducing moire, and that sharpness isn't really a big deal in film. I admit, mentioning the OLPF was kind of a cop-out on my part so I don't have to spout off all of these specs, but since I am here doing that anyway, I wanted to clear that up.
Unless you have a technical description of why the S1h looks digital over the A7s III, please let me know, otherwise, that is your opinion, and you are fully entitled to have it.
Sorry if I overloaded you with stats, I don't need to convince you how great the S1h is, I just wanted to know why you think that and if you knew about what makes a sensor more or less filmic.
