    Up until recently, Google Voice did not offer a HIPAA-secure option, which meant the only way to be HIPAA-compliant in private practice was to utilize an alternative option for your phone line. But as of 2018, G Suite has added Google Voice to it’s offerings covered under the BAA, which means it can be HIPAA-secure. But there are a few steps to take to do so properly. In this video, I’ll walk you through how to make Google Voice HIPAA-secure.

    If you’re not familiar with Google Voice, it offers you a phone number that’s not tied to any device, which means you could answer your phone from your smartphone, computer, or any device. The free version of Google Voice has been around for years, but up until recently there was no HIPAA-secure version of Google voice. Just like anyone could sign up for a free gmail account, anyone could sign up for a free google voice number, though neither of those options are HIPAA-secure.
    As of July 2018, Google finally allowed users to add a paid version of Google Voice to their suite of services through G Suite. This Google Voice service then falls under the G Suite BAA agreement, meaning it is HIPAA-secure. HOWEVER, the only way this is true is if you already signed that BAA agreement with G Suite. So make sure you learn how to do that from my earlier video first.
    If you already have G Suite and you’ve signed the BAA agreement, follow the steps in this video to add Google Voice to your suite of services so that it’s HIPAA-secure.
    Just a reminder that even though a service or software is HIPAA-Secure, it’s still possible to use it in ways that are not HIPAA-compliant. So be sure to use this software properly. You might find it helpful to review Google’s Guide: “G Suite and Cloud Identity; HIPAA Implementation Guide.” They have a section dedicated to using Google Voice in a HIPAA-compliant manner.

    This was helpful but it might be worth doing an updated version now that Google has changed service to be called Google Workspace (steps similar but slightly different).

    Thanks for detailed information. I wanted to confirm that sense I now have a BAA with G Suite I will be able to add my current non HIPAA Google Voice number to G suite as opposed to having to get a new HIPAA compliant Google voice number. Thanks for all of the help.

    Question: can I make my current Google voice number HIPAA compliant? And if so, how do I do this please? I can't find any information on how to do this. Thank you so much for your valuable content Dr Marie !

    I really appreciate this video. I ran into a setback though. When I clicked on the $10/month version at checkout it said that I would be charged $20/month and I can't figure out why that is. Has this happened to anyone else? Also, I have been using the free version of google voice, but I pay for the google workspace domain and gmail. Will I be able to keep my same google voice phone number when I upgrade to the business version?

    Hi, is there a HIPAA version for 10$ a month? when i click it, it wants to charge me 20$ per month even though i select the 10$ plan.

    I’m considering this for private nonmedical use thinking it makes the calls more private? Less google data collection?

    Do you know if it is possible for multiple devices to be logged in to the same phone number with this HIPAA compliant version of Google Voice? I have one phone number that I need two people to be able to access. Thank you!

    Do you already have to be a formed PLLC to sign up for GSuite HIPPA compliant services? Thanks!

    • @buffyfermino4361
      @buffyfermino4361 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need a PLLC or LLC. In fact, in California where Marie (and myself) are licensed, psychologists/therapists, etc, cannot have LLC's. No specific business license is required for GSuite and the BAA/HIPAA compliance.

    I've been following along with the video, have signed up for Google voice and am now trying to add a location, my issue is that I am opening up a teletherapy practice, if I use my home address (which I did not list as my business address, I used a commercial registered office) will my home address show anywhere, as I do not want it to. Help! 😊

      Great question! I don't think this information is posted anywhere, but just in case, I'd do the Google privacy checkup. You can find that here: myaccount.google.com/data-and-personalization
      I'd just go through the whole thing and uncheck everything you don't want people to see about you. Hope this helps!

    I wasn't able to change the Google Voice number. Is that only for paid options beyond the $10/month level?

    • @Mellyjc
      @Mellyjc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you mean change it from your free account, or from the assigned Gsuite account? I did confirm yesterday they do not have a setup to smoothly transfer a free number to the Suite. I canceled my subscription and went with another, cheaper provider that wouldn't leave me without my number for 10 days.

    Is it possible to make an existing phone you already use for business matters, HIPAA secure?

    • @PrivatePracticeSkills
      @PrivatePracticeSkills  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't tried it, but there's an option to port existing numbers into Google Voice. Here's a help page about it: support.google.com/a/answer/9049997

    • @Mellyjc
      @Mellyjc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I spent all day on this yesterday- the answer is that to transfer a regular GV number to Gsuite requires an outside phone company and up to 10 days. You'd have to talk to the phone company about whether you'll miss all the calls in that 10 day period, and I saw another comment that this is expensive.
      I looked at the Person-Centered Tech website and found iPlum is recommended, and they have easy, explicit instructions on porting from Google Voice with NO downtime. Voice number works until ported in, and they give you a temporary number until porting is complete. My port was done in like 15 hours, and it's actually CHEAPER than Voice on Gsuite. So surprised Google didn't think of this need when finally adding Voice to the Suite!
