Band Maid mixes are why I positioned myself directly in front of Kanami’s amp for their live show. She does more work in a single song than most live guitarists do in a full set.

Giovanni is a masterpiece of composition (one of many), a song I can put on repeat and get something new every time. There is a well-mixed version on the Day of Maid 2024 Blu-ray that comes with the Epic Narratives (Limited Edition).

Especially in Giovanni the guitar is for harmonic texture which is why she keeps it back in the mix. Kanami likes to use melodic figures instead of backing chords but she doesn’t want it to overwhelm the vocals

Band-Maid live is always best! For example, Band-Maid recently released a video on their Band-Maid Prime webpage of the band practicing "Hate?". Now, if you have reacted to the official live video of the song, you know how dynamic it is with the amazing solo conversation/duel by MISA and Kanami. During the video on Prime, the band played the entire song with the conversation/dual in such a calm and relaxed manner that it looked like ho-hum just another song to practice. All the notes were perfectly played with each Maid in their own little world practicing their part. This group is so together and professional.

As a (hack) guitarists myself, I can sympathize with your wanting Kanami's guitar part to be out front further... but if you listen to the studio track, this is how it's composed, with the guitar line being tucked behind the vocals. You might have a different opinion of it if you had come at it hearing the full version first, rather than the instrumental version. It's nice that we have the instrumental version so we CAN get a clear listen to what's going on there if we want, but the dynamics here are quite intentional as part of the composition, and this live version is pretty damn spot on to the intent of the composition.
We guitarists often do argue that Kanami takes more of a back seat in the dynamics and in terms of things like the length of her solos than we would like, and maybe it's her just being a little shy? But then again, there are the actual instrumental songs where she's quite out front and killing it. This is part of what makes this band great, that you have this diversity in terms of all sorts of things, including the placements of each instrument on each song. If there's something that you would like to see somewhat different about the song you're listening to, well, just listen to another Band-Maid song and another until you find that perfect one. It's out there if you listen long enough. 😄

This was the live debut done in an online streamed concert with no audience because covid. The concert was also released on DVD/Blu-ray. They did the live debut of 7 songs during this concert.

Kanamincho is a once every century level composer. There, I said it.

They’ve pushed Kanami forward more in more recent mixes. She sounded great at Yokohama last year and the spin off show that followed early this year.
I think it’s a fine line to tread. A lot of songs, like Giovanni, she’s shredding basically the whole time, right through choruses and everything, and it’s more textural than melodic, so if it’s too prominent, it could compromise the catchiness of the song.
I describe it like they’re basically a prog band, but with catchy vocals that trick the casual listener into thinking that they’re not.

The incomparable Unseen World album featured this and the amazing HGK . Miku named the song after a Turkish guided missile system as the song simply "takes off". Kanami wrote a guitar part so difficult, it took her weeks to be able to play it. It's generally not covered for this reason. It comes with vocals and should be heard to be believed ! 😮❤

Imagine Miku being handed "Giovanni" from Kanami and having to write lyrics for that! She did an incredible job! Fantastic!

@@Davey-Boyd The job was a bit easier for Miku when she used Night on the Galactic Railroad as a basis for the title. Giovanni being the protagonist of the story who is looking for his missing father. A story that resonates with Miku's personal experience.

You want to hear more Kanami? Prepare to be disappointed. Kanami loves to bury her sound in favor of the whole Band-Maid vibe. She especially wants Saiki to be heard and since Saiki sings the entire song, welp. Then there’s Misa, giving the band a very bass-forward sound.
BM rewards repeat listening. The more you replay a song, the more you hear Kanami.

No, I think she wants rhythm section to stand out the most, then vocals next.😅

Always the issue, Kanami letting others take the spotlight. I has been a recurring complaint that on their live recordings, Kanami is to quiet.
    But still, a great song.😊

This was a LIVE Studio PPV stream......no audience. They did these during the C-19 plandemic and also do them for the "Day of Maid" for the fans which is every May 10th. This appears to be a 2021 LIVE stream, most likely Day of Maid since "Giovanni came out on their 2021 release of Unseen World, could also have been a teaser song in 2020 too, pre- Unseen World release.

I heard the studio version first and then when I heard the instrumental I was amazed by all the guitar work I had missed because I was focused on the lyrics. People are now using AI to remove the lyrics to try and find other buried treasure in their music.
