I have both and love them both. The Mora is better if you want to use for knife tasks or you are really counting ounces. The Fiskars is better for splitting wood and hammering things like tent stakes. If I had to pick one I would go with the Fiskars. It is half the price and is a better general purpose camp hatchet. What I really like the Mora for is processing big game. I used mine to quarter an elk and it was awesome for that purpose.
Most of the time, I put a convex secondary bevel on my scandi grind knives, Rod Garcia designer of the Skookum Bush Tool suggested that, it makes sence as far as adding more strenght to a especially a zero grind a.k.a. scandi grind, when you have such a thin edge on a tool you will be pounding into wood, a secondary bevel makes a whole lot of sence.
I use my Fiskars splitting axe quite a bit and sharpen it with my Worksharp. The edge is completely different now and takes a little more abuse. It still needs a touch up after each session but not nearly the damage I used to get. That Mora looks like something I would like, heck I like anything with a blade, good demo Aaron. Mike in SJ
The biggest thing that is disappointing is not having a usable pommel for hammering tent stakes and other things. I like the better steel and edge holding capability. Great review!
Say Heah Aaron, This is the video that got me searching for a Lite Carry for this season. It's not that I really needed a new set or new gear for the upcoming warmer weather season. Infact my Swamp Rat RatWeiler should be here shortly which I'm pairing off with my Rodent Solution and I could give my friends back. and I also just pulled the trigger on a Beautiful Battle Horse Attitude which I'm having it thinned down from 3/8ths" to 5/32nd" thick. I also am having a curve put on it so the Drop Point is lower for personal reasons and a High Scandi Vex Grind with White Handle with Blue Liners on it. But since I really enjoy my afternoon delights a hot cup of coffee on the open fire and a baked potato and I want to go Lite. I got the same Hatchet in this video that got me interested in it. So I paired it off with the Mora 200 which will be added to my vintage Mora Frost Clipper and the 510 and the Classic #1. I also have in a beautiful condition a Vintage Mira that has a meral trim leather sheath with three crowns on it with a big "A" on the sheat. The knife has a Curly Birch handle with a hand gaurd and a metal pommel it's in great shale, I think it was a Military issue for the Cadets. Anyjow, as you can see I didn't need a new set. But tge video inspired me and I got the knife and even a Bacho Laplander and they match in color, But also believe it or nit. My Bokor Plus Black Vox Rold fits in and sort of matches and I really like my Rold and it was approved by you too in one of your videos. Thanx for putting out some awesome videos. It's a POLL not a pommel, other than that, great review. I love my Mora as well, but have MANY axes and hatchets. I believe it fits the bill for when weight is absolutely critical seeing how light it is. Have you ever checked the poll with flint to see if it will throw sparks? I have not but if it does, that makes it even better. I need to check that out tonight.
I hold one a SHOT and liked it, the only thing I an wary about it the way the shaft sticks out away from the sides of the head, unlike my Schrade axes which are flush and split cut firewood awesome. Did you try splitting any small standing pieces of firewood? Otherwise, I think it wold be a great lightweight bush crafter and I still might pick one up to test.

Yeah Aaron, That's just what I was wondering before I saw Chris and his concern, Yeah I like using my Estwing's for that reason, and I have three sizes, Oh I have a Gransfors Bruks and a Iltis Oxhead that I had it customized, and my 2Hawks. anyhow lately I've been using William Collins techniques how he uses an axe to split kindling, having a smooth face leans me more into the Estwing's over Fiskar's and this Mora Camp Axe, I first saw my logs which are 3"-4" in diameter, and about 12"-14" long, then I chop in to it to get it started and using a hammering motion I hammer right through and on stubborn wood I can baton on the handle, Yeah please do a follow up I would like to see if the Mora Camp Axe will hang up at that area.
I’ve had one for many years gifted to my by my older brother. I’ve never used it because I tend to favor the Fiskars. Maybe I will get around to it one day.
Say Heah Aaron. I ordered my Mora Hatchet with my Mora 2000 in Green Because I didn't know the Bacho Laplander was available in Orange, or I would of had a Orange Trio. No biggie, I like my Green Trio. It's my Lite Trio. Infact it's one of my Fav's. Lite Trio Carry. I bough a few of Far Nine Flap Over Purses at a closeout Price, I think I paid $2.99 apiece for them. Their not as we'll made as the good Haversack's. But that's excactly how I use my Far Nine Flap Over Purse as. The funny part is I'm still using my first one as a Haversack and it's still holding up great. It carries my Mora Hatchet and I have my Bacho Laplander with a knife I bought at eBay , It's a Damascus knife. But not your average damascus, It's more fancy but the lines connect to eachother and to my surprise it is a Damascus. It wasn't too expensive and came in a cheap sheath. with a wrapped handle which I use to nake a defence/fish, frog spear if I want. On one side I have a Bushnell Compact Binoculars . the other side my Compass .The good size main body carries my other 5C's, I also carry a Survival Bekt with my Canteen and Necessities Pouch and my Mora 2000. I also carry an Nalgene Bottle, Pancho and a Space Blanket in my Makeshift Haversack. When I take my friend along for a Afternoon Delight, I might take my Homer Harmonica after the fact and she makes a great Mors A La Cup of hot coffee and we bring some Cheese and Fruit and ofcouce I bring sone good Cigar's which she doesn't mind in the open air. So yeah, The Mora Hatchet is a great piece of kit to make up one of my Fav. econo priced Lite Trio. After seeing how it's made and how it holds in the handle, I just wish it was more wedge shaped to split better. Oh, don't get me wrong, I manage it working wood and it's very lite and compact as it is. But sometimes on wet condition's I bring my Wildeness Tool which is also around a pound with my S. O. G. Seal Pup Elite TiNi Tactical Knife that by the way work's great in the bush. With my C. S. double edge machete that's discintinued makes a pretty good clearing tool. Oh, I also, and because of your sharing the Steel Will's I got a great combo, I ordered my Druid 240 and teamed it with my Druid 230 as a clearing long knife with my Estwing Sportsman make a pretty good Trio. But I also bring it with my makeshift Havesack so the Bacho Laplander is in the zippered flap over. You need to learn how to pop a chip out of the wood. Continually chopping in the same plane is highly inefficient. You did this with both hatchets, so its neither hatchets fault. Your technique is very bad. JT.
I am one of your subscribers, and as such look forward to each video. One of the things that is taught to people who are new to photography, is to make sure that your subject doesn't appear to have a tree growing out of his/her head...ahem... ; )
Say Heah Aaron, Alot of people don't realize you can baton with this small Mora Hatchet. I still use my Lite Trio when I go out for a good cigar and a coffee, known as my Afternoon Delights.,,.p
Pros: Small, light, strong materials, good steel, excellent handle with perfect palm swell, excellent handling and center of gravity, generous size cutting edge, thin geometry is excellent for carving, curved bit is nice for notching Cons: No flare at back of blade to prevent damage to the handle mount when splitting large pieces, thin poll The best thing about the mora is you can get a Fiskars instead and have a cheaper and more versatile hatchet.

Nice review. I am of the opinion its better to sacrifice a bit ($100 isn't a huge amount) and get a Gransfors Bruk small forest axe. A GFB would cut those trees in 1/2 the time, with 1/2 the effort. If your life depends on it, quality beats price every time. The GFB also has a 20 year guarantee.

Nice review. l'm looking at buying this but I have a few questions which I hope you can answer. How is the grip in wet conditions? And would you recommend this over the Kershaw camp axe?

even though i do NOT like axes/hatchets that you can't replace the handles on i say this about the little Fiskars: the Fiskars hatchet cut like living hell. i've had that damned Fiskars for 15 years and the SOB cuts damned good - keeps a damned good edge, too. the Fiskars is a damned good hatchet. however, when the handle breaks that's it for it and i'm wondering when it's gonna break? it's old now, but it has been used a hell of a lot and lasted 15 years.
In all reality regardless of what the specs of any axe says, the back end will most likely be used as a hammer at one moment it’s life. So choosing an axe That can take that type of beating is a very important step regardless of whether its your intention to do it or not. You want something that can take the abuse just in case. for this reason the X7 (which I’ve never had a problem with hammering nails, pegs, fencing, posts etc.) wins in my book. For $25 the only thing u can honestly say is that you have to sharpen in a little more often.
I think this is a great backpacking tool, because of the light weight and bushcraft abilities but if I'm at home splitting kindling or rounds I use my Fiskars hatchet or an axe or maul. For cutting up small logs and branches or making poles this is awesome, at half the weight of the fiskars hatchet which I would never take backpacking. I don't carry a saw and I can't remember the last time I found sawed up logs to split up in the backcountry. Each tool has it's place I think.
Nick Rodriguez I have not made a decision on the AXE vs. Big Blades yet, (a video is coming on the pros and cons soon) but I would say that the Silent Hero and the Mora would be an amazing do everything set up.

flat as it seems to be it is probably an awful splitter. So we have practically no hammering and likely bad splitting capabilities. Severe drawbacks for a hatchet. What's worth a review without showing it's most common use!? And presenting it as as good as the fiskars in the end seems to be more like advertising an improper hatched vs a proper one,
Mora is an excellent knife-producer, and well known for it's products. Why for God's sake do they have to produce a kitchen-cutlery and present it as an outdoor tool? And why do we have a review cutting out two of the vital features of an axe/hatchet? Maybe I'm way too critical or naive for our times, fantastic review. Thumbs up!
Paul 815 I've carried this lil hatchet for couple o years now,its light but damn powerful.goes thru 5" saw cut birch in one swing.also have tried it on gnarly oak and it does fine.
Re nato mora makes good knives but I feel bahco is under appreciated,they're affordable and dare I say way better lol their wrecker knife is a beast has a great handle for bushcraft and u can beat that thing with a proper metal mallet all day.i think I paid £15 and honestly u can dismantle just about anything with it.has great belly for carving and easy to sharpen.ppl have biases towards European brand excluding gransfors for some reason.but bahco make really good tools.
Say Heah Aaron, Make a loop with paracoard a circle. put it through your belt and then take the bottom of the loop through the top loop and put the handle of the hatchet through the that loop. a poor man's hatchet belt carry.

But the X7 does not have a compact design and harder to make feather sticks with. I'd carry around another bigger axe with a hammer side for chopping logs anyway.
Kinda surprised the Mora has such a poor pommelling ability. Anyway, at 38 seconds for each small axe I guess you've proven that its not the size of the tool that's important, it how well you use it! :-)
This is a hatchet.they call it an axe. But its clearly a hatchet. Not meant to split logs like a fucking winter axe. Hatchets are made to split little pieces of wood. About the size of your forarm. Dooh..
A hatchet is normally made for limbing wood or splitting kindling. This hatchet however, has a thin head and wouldn’t split wood well. However, you could of course easily enough split wood.
That thing would be awful at splitting. The wood wood destroy that plastic. At least the X7 has a wedge shape head that things in the middle to allow the plastic to be protected somewhat. For the money those X7s are above and beyond capable. Remember, all axes are not hatchets, but all hatches are axes.
How well does it split compared to large knife like the BK9 or SP51? I am new to axes as well and am wondering if they may have more uses in the woods than a knife. Some people swear by them and would never carry a big knife.

What are you hammering with your hatchet? What are you doing that you need a hammer as well? I'm just wondering what your philosophy is for your hatchets. I have never needed a hammering tool for anything that I have ever done while out on a trip on which I would bring my hatchet.
Nate Malone walnuts hickory nuts tent stakes trap stakes on the trapline busting through ice nails killing animals on the trapline breaking bones to get the marrow straightening bent equipment making tools crushing plants to make medicines crushing shells and small stones into powder to make a paste driving wedges into things I could go on, but you get the point. maybe you should do more than just sit on your butt while outon a trip.
I didn't see product support mentioned. I like Fiskars for the UNCONDITIONAL lifetime warranty. If you break one, they replace it. Not great if SHTF, but until then, you get a free new axe if you hit the log with the handle and it breaks, etc. Does Mora have the same? Not sure, just asking.

These really fall into the hatchet category, but either one of these is worth a hundred "survival" knives, but there are much better choices than either of these. For that matter, a quality tomahawk, not one with a fancy head and edge made for looks, but one made for real work, is a much, much better choice.You should have batoned with them. Somehow people forget that a hatchet can be batoned even better than a knife, along with chopping better. In fact, you can often get through a tree faster by batoning than by chopping, especially if you don't have a lot of experience using a hatchet or an axe. I really don't mean this as an insult, but your chopping technique wasn't very good. If you would slow down, place each cut in the right place, and use the right technique, you would not only go through wood faster, but with a lot less effort. But neither a knife nor a hatchet is any good in a survival situation unless it's on your body, and for on the body carry, or even in the pack carry, there are not only better choices, but lighter choices, if the weight bothers you.

Why carry a hatchet? ++To fell very small trees or shorten firewood( a small saw does it better). ++To split wood( a short handled hatchet is a sorta hazardous, one-handed splitter ( A small forest axe would be better, and safer. A wood wedge would be better. Batoning a big knife would be better) ++To cut big bones( a small saw might work better). ++Chop timber into logs for fire( selective gathering plus a small saw works better). ++Hammer things like tent pegs or wood wedges( this Mora is a poor hammer). An Estwing is better for that. I can't make a case for carrying a hatchet, and this Mora looks likes a poor hatchet. You can make a good case to carry a small axe, but a saw+ big knife is probably better to carry.

Ive used Boron on horse shoes, for traction on pavement and trail rock but never seen or heard of a boron axe head, until now and thats badass👈
Isn't the thinness of the head bad for splitting? And when splitting, will damage the plastic? 🤔

Say Heah Aaron, Alot of people don't realize you can baton with this small Mora Hatchet. I still use my Lite Trio when I go out for a good cigar and a coffee, known as my Afternoon Delights.,,.p
at IWA I have asked to Mora employees why they add boron to carbon steel and they said that boron add a lot of resilience to steel
Pros: Small, light, strong materials, good steel, excellent handle with perfect palm swell, excellent handling and center of gravity, generous size cutting edge, thin geometry is excellent for carving, curved bit is nice for notching
Cons: No flare at back of blade to prevent damage to the handle mount when splitting large pieces, thin poll
The best thing about the mora is you can get a Fiskars instead and have a cheaper and more versatile hatchet.

Nice review. I am of the opinion its better to sacrifice a bit ($100 isn't a huge amount) and get a Gransfors Bruk small forest axe. A GFB would cut those trees in 1/2 the time, with 1/2 the effort. If your life depends on it, quality beats price every time. The GFB also has a 20 year guarantee.

The hatchet is a bit thin for splitting, he instead used it for its strengths. A.K.A. Chopping
In most cases if you have to baton a hatchet you need to go home because you are supremely unskilled.

nice axe,i am hedging between this one and the Schrade SCAXE2L,wish i could try them out together,better comparison for me to choose from
even though i do NOT like axes/hatchets that you can't replace the handles on i say this about the little Fiskars: the Fiskars hatchet cut like living hell. i've had that damned Fiskars for 15 years and the SOB cuts damned good - keeps a damned good edge, too. the Fiskars is a damned good hatchet. however, when the handle breaks that's it for it and i'm wondering when it's gonna break? it's old now, but it has been used a hell of a lot and lasted 15 years.
In all reality regardless of what the specs of any axe says, the back end will most likely be used as a hammer at one moment it’s life. So choosing an axe That can take that type of beating is a very important step regardless of whether its your intention to do it or not. You want something that can take the abuse just in case. for this reason the X7 (which I’ve never had a problem with hammering nails, pegs, fencing, posts etc.) wins in my book. For $25 the only thing u can honestly say is that you have to sharpen in a little more often.
I think this is a great backpacking tool, because of the light weight and bushcraft abilities but if I'm at home splitting kindling or rounds I use my Fiskars hatchet or an axe or maul. For cutting up small logs and branches or making poles this is awesome, at half the weight of the fiskars hatchet which I would never take backpacking. I don't carry a saw and I can't remember the last time I found sawed up logs to split up in the backcountry. Each tool has it's place I think.
On that note. What is your opinion of me retiring my big choppers (bk9 and SOG tigershark) in favor of this little guy and my Silent Hero?
Nick Rodriguez I have not made a decision on the AXE vs. Big Blades yet, (a video is coming on the pros and cons soon) but I would say that the Silent Hero and the Mora would be an amazing do everything set up.

flat as it seems to be it is probably an awful splitter. So we have practically no hammering and likely bad splitting capabilities. Severe drawbacks for a hatchet. What's worth a review without showing it's most common use!? And presenting it as as good as the fiskars in the end seems to be more like advertising an improper hatched vs a proper one,

Mora is an excellent knife-producer, and well known for it's products. Why for God's sake do they have to produce a kitchen-cutlery and present it as an outdoor tool? And why do we have a review cutting out two of the vital features of an axe/hatchet? Maybe I'm way too critical or naive for our times, fantastic review. Thumbs up!
Paul 815 I've carried this lil hatchet for couple o years now,its light but damn powerful.goes thru 5" saw cut birch in one swing.also have tried it on gnarly oak and it does fine.
Re nato mora makes good knives but I feel bahco is under appreciated,they're affordable and dare I say way better lol their wrecker knife is a beast has a great handle for bushcraft and u can beat that thing with a proper metal mallet all day.i think I paid £15 and honestly u can dismantle just about anything with it.has great belly for carving and easy to sharpen.ppl have biases towards European brand excluding gransfors for some reason.but bahco make really good tools.

Say Heah Aaron, Make a loop with paracoard a circle. put it through your belt and then take the bottom of the loop through the top loop and put the handle of the hatchet through the that loop. a poor man's hatchet belt carry.
They use that type of steel on forest machine band tracks as well very strong.

With the x7 you can hammer thinks, mora not!
But the X7 does not have a compact design and harder to make feather sticks with. I'd carry around another bigger axe with a hammer side for chopping logs anyway.
Kinda surprised the Mora has such a poor pommelling ability. Anyway, at 38 seconds for each small axe I guess you've proven that its not the size of the tool that's important, it how well you use it! :-)

This is a hatchet.they call it an axe. But its clearly a hatchet. Not meant to split logs like a fucking winter axe. Hatchets are made to split little pieces of wood. About the size of your forarm. Dooh..
A hatchet is normally made for limbing wood or splitting kindling. This hatchet however, has a thin head and wouldn’t split wood well. However, you could of course easily enough split wood.
That thing would be awful at splitting. The wood wood destroy that plastic. At least the X7 has a wedge shape head that things in the middle to allow the plastic to be protected somewhat.
For the money those X7s are above and beyond capable.
Remember, all axes are not hatchets, but all hatches are axes.

How well does it split compared to large knife like the BK9 or SP51? I am new to axes as well and am wondering if they may have more uses in the woods than a knife. Some people swear by them and would never carry a big knife.

Not annoyed at all. I live in a metric country as well and just sharing tips on what i do when i'm curious about conversions or specs.
By the way F.Y.I the head on the Mora Hatchet goes down about 2" inches into the handle.

if I'm going to carry a hatchet I want to hammer with it too, and the mora just doesn't have the surface for that. 5 out of 10 for me.
What are you hammering with your hatchet? What are you doing that you need a hammer as well? I'm just wondering what your philosophy is for your hatchets. I have never needed a hammering tool for anything that I have ever done while out on a trip on which I would bring my hatchet.

I didn't see product support mentioned. I like Fiskars for the UNCONDITIONAL lifetime warranty. If you break one, they replace it. Not great if SHTF, but until then, you get a free new axe if you hit the log with the handle and it breaks, etc. Does Mora have the same? Not sure, just asking.

These really fall into the hatchet category, but either one of these is worth a hundred "survival" knives, but there are much better choices than either of these. For that matter, a quality tomahawk, not one with a fancy head and edge made for looks, but one made for real work, is a much, much better choice.You should have batoned with them. Somehow people forget that a hatchet can be batoned even better than a knife, along with chopping better. In fact, you can often get through a tree faster by batoning than by chopping, especially if you don't have a lot of experience using a hatchet or an axe. I really don't mean this as an insult, but your chopping technique wasn't very good. If you would slow down, place each cut in the right place, and use the right technique, you would not only go through wood faster, but with a lot less effort. But neither a knife nor a hatchet is any good in a survival situation unless it's on your body, and for on the body carry, or even in the pack carry, there are not only better choices, but lighter choices, if the weight bothers you.

Why carry a hatchet?
++To fell very small trees or shorten firewood( a small saw does it better).
++To split wood( a short handled hatchet is a sorta hazardous, one-handed splitter ( A small forest axe would be better, and safer. A wood wedge would be better. Batoning a big knife would be better)
++To cut big bones( a small saw might work better).
++Chop timber into logs for fire( selective gathering plus a small saw works better).
++Hammer things like tent pegs or wood wedges( this Mora is a poor hammer). An Estwing is better for that.
I can't make a case for carrying a hatchet, and this Mora looks likes a poor hatchet.
You can make a good case to carry a small axe, but a saw+ big knife is probably better to carry.
