Must Watch - Unsponsored Owner Review MG HS PHEV PLUG-IN Hybrid

- When you're buying a car you never find out the irritating stuff until it's too late. I hope that this brief unsponsored overview of some of the issues I faced in the first 2 days, can help you make an informed decision whether to buy or not.

Had one for 2 weeks as a courtesy car and couldn't wait to hand it back. It had 500 miles on the clock when I received it. Within two days, I had 2 bulb failures. The auto high beam had a mind of its own and came on whenever it liked. Touch screen is woeful and looks like it's out of a computer from 10yrs ago. Reversing camera looks like it's from an old Nokia phone Windows misted up constantly. Fuel consumption is horrendous average MPG was 28.2. Best I achieved was 32MPG. Unfortunately, despite its looks, it wouldn't be my choice of car.

For the speed limit, the one displayed on the speedo is sensed by the lenses on the windscreen whereas the satnav is is from the navigation program so it sometimes isn't correct. Both can be temperamental but the one on the speedo comes from the signs the car sense on the road so I usually follow that one unless it doesn't seem right!

Thank you for watching! Yes, I figured that speed limit display is governed by the two different systems, but as you say, it's temperamental. All in all, like you, I would say that it's good value for money, but that they do need to sort out these software issues.
My Volvo XC90 has the same issue which could be pretty annoying. I trust the SatNav more than the intellisafe
Thanks for the review. I have a standard petrol model. The other issue is the A/C controls, which have to be adjusted on the screen. Not sure if you could use what's app through Android auto or Apple car play. The Pearl white is nice too. Thanks.
I have an HS and prefer using the info screen to adjust the air con as I find it easier than most other vehicles that are mounted lower with multiple dials or buttons.

Hi Sassie, love the review and hope your car has been fixed now.. I just wondered if you know how what your mpg is or how many miles you get for a full petrol tank. They state about 155mpg but its difficult to get a real world fuel economy from anyone. thanks
Would love to assist, but unfortunately the car broke down after a week and has been in the garage till now coming up for nine weeks... :(

Hi. An interesting and sensible review. Did they fix the battery issue and how week did they deal with it. Did they give you a loan Phev while they had yours. Looking to get one but concerned about backup from dealers. Thanks

Also love the red interior, unfortunately it was not available in my country, so mine has black interior. I heard about the radio starting when the car starts, but it was fixed on the latest firmware update and doesn't happen on my car.

Can you switch off the speed identification by pressing the OK button on the steering wheel for about 5 seconds? Do the same to switch it back on? Use phone by plugging in to use Apple Car Play or Android?
It should have been possible to turn features off but they would revert to default settings for some unknown reason.
Hello 😊 greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪 I'm thinking of buying one of these cars, I'm really impressed with the spec for the price etc. I'm just wondering, at night time are the led headlights weak or good? And have you had any issues, I mean could you recommend the car? I see one guy as an issue when in reverse that the sensors keep beeping even though nothing is there, because apparently the licence plate is too close to the sensor? Thank you
Lights are good. I think that the issues I had were probably teething issues. Hopefully they have risolve them by now.

I got exact the same car, color and red. Some times you have to press every function twice. You can ask me anything. I already worn out the manual.
Lol! Yep I agree, sometimes the long press worked, some times a double press, but in any case unfortunately, had to call the RAC out 4 times within 7 days due to a battery drainage issue, so will likely be returning the car to the manufacturer. Real shame though... It has good potential.
@@sassieimmy Ok that's too bad , but returning a car is not an option here in The Netherlands, I can trade in my car at a loss but no refund. I also have seen the low 12V battery warning a few times.
The what’s app feature is due to highway regs because it’s internet source but would work on apple play

We just ordered one of these in black with a red interior thanks to your video.
Just wanted to note that some of the issues you mentioned are addressed in the manual. Eg. Fuel tank being pressurised is cos fuel goes bad after a while so pressurising the tank reduces the chance of it happening. If you are just bobbing around town mainly using electric you won’t use the fuel before it spoils. If I recall correctly you need to press the button for a few seconds and then it might take up to 30 seconds to depressurise the tank enabling you to fill up.
Some of the issues pointed out are normal these days like only being able to mute sound rather than turn stereo element of the system off. My leaf is like that at least.
Foible - You don't want the rear hatch opening with the engine on, but it shouldn't matter if the car is in park, right? Foible - You determine how fast you should drive, not the car. Speed limit signs are always changing and GPS can't keep up.
Theres a reason it doesn’t allow you to open the boot with the key when the car is started, it’s so that it’s not accidentally pressed when driving or you are not observing the book opening, this would be dangerous in case of obstacles or people. When you have the car turned off it works?!?!
This is not logical. There are many reasons why you may need to open the boot with the ignition on. But this is not the problem with the MG. The boot opening or not was not dependent on the car being on or not, it was just temperamental.
Hi..I guess you have used this car in peak winters. I have read somewhere that when heating is turned on then the EV won't work. Car has to run only on petrol. If that's the case then the plug in option is not enabled for atleast 6 months of the year in UK.. Is that true? Have you tried driving in ev mode with heating on?
Unfortunately, we had to return the car because the battery kept failing so sorry I can't answer your question.

Ooooooh! Hadn't noticed that :) But then why would they change the plates if they already had a load in stock?

the radio can be turned off by pressing home button for 5 seconds. The infotainment turns off, you see time and date on the screen. Then you can turn OFF and turn ON the car in same state and infotainment wont change its state. So radio will be OFF after starting the car. The bluetooth issue of call coming from whatsapp, I have also seen in an older version of Hyundai i20 too. So, its not new.
The WhatsApp issue is my Skoda as well. I'm my Skoda WhatsApp doesn't show on the system at all. Just the phone.
It's so odd that WhatsApp doesn't connect automatically. I drove one of their smaller hatchbacks and WhatsApp connected fine 🤷🏾♀️

About 10 or 11Lt 100km
Use Android auto or Carplay. Thé cap openner is not an issue.

The car protecs the user for making silly mistakes, for instance opening doors while the engine is running. So don't blame the car for rufusing to follow your orders. If the car is blocking something then try to find out what's the reason the car does that. In 99% of the cases the car has a good reason to do so. I'm a MG ZS EV owner for a year now and that's what I found out in this year. If you start presenting your car in a video a few days after you got it then you probably will show the mistakes a new owner will make. It's an intelligent car and you have to addapt to that. The most silly thing is to blame the car. The car is only protecting its user the way it was instructed to do.
Glad that you are getting on well with yours. This one has been at the MG garage for 4 weeks now and they have been unable to resolve some very major issues with the battery. Plus they said that the software had not been updated on our particular car. Are you saying that they are stupid too?
What a statement ‘the car protects the user’…I also had an mg ZS ev , by far the worse car I’ve ever owned which thankfully I’ve now got rid of it…Mgs pilot ‘safety’ system has to be the most useless, dangerous safety system in any car…so no the mg does not ‘protect the user’…and it’s not an intelligent car it’s a car with multiple component issues and lots of tech that doesn’t work very well.

Terrible review. After only owning it 2 days too. Read the manual or ask the dealer to show you how to use the car properly.
Thanks for watching! Yeah read the manual and so did the dealer during the next 8 weeks it spent in the garage. My final review is that MG apologised for the issues we faced and returned our money. 2 days is more than enough to figure out a car.

Thanks for your review. I sat in this vehicle last year. And just sitting in it was a huge turn off for me. Visibility and seating position is a shocker. There’s not much nice I can say about this vehicle.
I ended up buying the top trim RAV4 Hybrid. Chalk and cheese. RAV4 is tops.
For people who like this vehicle, then go for it.
At least this reviewer told the truth in some aspects, where as most reviewers suck up to the manufacturer in more ways than one.
