    I really like the scene where Badger and Skinny Pete take care of Jesse. Still after all these years, in a universe where everyone holds grudges, these two just want to think of a way for Jesse to be safe and happy. They really are his friends.

    • @djtoona
      @djtoona ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Exactly. It also gives an extended look into the friendship of the three of them. They agree to help him even though there was no profit, no promises, not even a need for Jesse to ask for help. It showed that they can pull it together and concentrate on their roles in helping Jesse out even after the junkyard dude takes a powder because lojack was turned on. That didn't phase Badger and Skinny Pete. . They are not just wasted drug addicts. And they did it for a friend. In a way it echoes the near-end of the series itself when Walt hires Badger and Skinny Pete to shine laser pointers into the house to pose as assassins with guns. Except there it was a paid gig. In any case, the two of them are showing they can pull it together in both the last scenes of Breaking Bad and in the early scenes of El Camino.

    I love the ending. It’s so beautiful. Jesse driving off finally in control of his own destiny. I think if you treat it as a bonus episode it works great. And it does actually end jesse’s arc really satisfyingly if you rewatch the whole show.

      People make this kind of comment all the time and it is kinda embarrassing. Jesse is not a real person. Your closure from a meaningless continuation is because you have a very poor imagination or at least don't use it enough, so you see others imagination is like real life, like they are magic or something; you need them.

    El Camino is the weakest part of the Breaking Bad saga, but it's still essential viewing and is a good send off for Jesse

  • @VersusArdua
    @VersusArdua ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I get that the people disappearer was screwed over by Jesse's erratic and irresponsible decision making in Breaking Bad, but charging him double when he was clearly so desperate was a morally dubious move at best imo. It really drives home the cold nature of the underworld in a way that the show did so well.

  • @Stevenson14
    @Stevenson14 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    Hard disagree with you Kino, about the film having “no stakes”. Jesse was being hunted by the police the whole time. I mean, did you see the scene of the caravan of cops going down the road while Jesse was in his car? Also, Neil and Casey were still bad guys. They gave the Neo-Nazis the tools to keep Jesse captive, they knew Jesse was being tortured and did not care. They weren’t explicitly as evil Jack and Todd, but doing business with those guys doesn’t make you just a bystander. The fight might have been over just a small amount, but unless Jesse got that money, he was screwed. It was $1800 or he’d be in a prison cell. How could you not see that the stakes were high?
    And yes, the film did have a reason to exist. It was to show us Jesse’s fate. He was the 2nd most important character after Walt, it wasn’t enough see that he escaped Jack’s gang at the end of the show. He was tortured and he would still be hunted by the police. We wanted to see how he would make it in the end. He dealt with PTSD, and used the skills he learned from Walt and Mike to maneuver his way to a new life. That matters. I agree it wasn’t perfect, but still a good film and nice epilogue to the BB story

    The point of Jessie killing that dude was that he did change. He learned from both Mike and Walter how to survive by using logic and manipulative tactics to win. Jesse when Caught immediately gives up, when it turns out they weren’t cops it shows his innocent way of thinking was wrong.
    So he incorporated everything he learned and he Won his freedom.

      I disagree. Cinema is a visual medium and cinematography is the vital component that differences it from other mediums like books, comics or video games. Some of the most progressive and influential works in cinema history have been excercises on cinematography rather than simply telling a story. Un chien andalou comes instantly to mind. Don't get me wrong, the best works in any medium are those that excel on as many aspects as possible. For instance, I personally find Better Call Saul an overall superior work than El Camino and Breaking Bad because I think that the show is better in every way from cinematography to editing to storytelling and everything in between but saying that El Camino is bad just because of one aspect of the production and ignoring how well it tackles the art of film and image composition, these being what even allows film and tv to exist along with editing, and also others like acting and editing is not knowing how to truly evaluate a medium that involves different elements working together.

    I was listening to this video while on my way home from work and hearing how quickly you described the plot of El Camino made me realize how lacking the movie was of any true substance. Yeah, it might have been nice to see everyone once more, it wasn't a story that needed telling since we could already assume he went on to find the peace he was looking for. I also agree that the stakes weren't high enough and that the Kandy guys should have just taken all the money so that there would be some real tension and not just the police looking for Jesse. Furthermore, I think that this movie suffers from what The Many Saints of Newark suffered from, which is that David Chase and Vince Gilligan are great television writers, but not great movie writers. Overall, great work Kino and watching this video was a great laugh to have after a day of work.

    • @djtoona
      @djtoona ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The low amount that Jesse needed to get together was perfect for this film. If it was the whole amount that he was short, be might have said fuck this and turned himself in, or this would have just been a robbery flick. He might have been tempted to rob any place with lots of cash (which are hard to rob these days), or consider suicide. But the small amount needed drove Jesse nuts. To get THAT close and to still need a little more for the trip was aggravating. Perhaps some of you have not be in a situation in which you had a big debt and were , after a lot of work, ready to pay it off and it turns out you come up short with no apparent means to get that last bit of money. And that's what leads to the OK Corral gunfight, And that's why he took just what he needed. (Yes, just before exploding the building)

    The other part I love is the fact that it's believable crime caper fiction. That genre rarely gets it right nowadays.Then you get Jesse and Creepy Todd, which are great characters. I agree it was unnecessary, but it's still better than any other TV universe or show in general. I'm editing the following in upon watching your commentary: I completely agree about the welder character (s). Would of been greatly improved if they were more threatening and villainous.

To say the least, those two dudes are as bad as the nazis for willing hooking Jesse up to his meth lab trap. Hey may not have been overcoming anything like you said but actually, we saw him overcome every single obstacle thrown his way using the knowledge he learned over the last 3-4 years.

    I get that people age over time, but at least actors could try to put themselves in shape to make themselves look like they were looking at the end of brba
    Aaron Paul is fat, didn't bother to lose weight before filming. (And he was supposed to be a slave for a year, at least Jacks gang feed him well lol)
    Jesse Plemons (Todd) is fat, didn't bother to lose weight before filming.
    As for Bryan Cranston, he actually looks pretty much the same he did in brba. But... he didn't bothered to shave his head because he had some other movie filming soon, so he's wearing a bald wig over his hair. And looking like a megamind in result.
    Actors clearly didn't give a shit about this movie. Movie, that meant to be the ultimate conclusion for an epic tv show, that either made these actors famous or saved their career. The show that may be THE highest point of their careers as an actors.

They know the LoJack has been triggered, yet take their time reacting, say goodbyes, etc. It’s not like they’re in the middle of the desert. I think it's an extremely flawed movie, but as an epilogue to Jesse, I enjoy it nonetheless. Of course I also had the courtesy of not having to be involved in whatever hype cycle this movie got which probably set it up to come off as being so bad. I definitely think they could have cut the movie down some and it would have been much better. Though I do wish they used the full version of Jane and Jesse's conversation at the end of the movie cause as it is in the current movie, it just comes off super unnatural and stilted compared to their normal converstaions.

    It's good, but honestly unnecesary. I liked where the show's finale left Jessie. He escaped Jack's Gang and Walter's Empire, but is forever scarred by what he lived through and we don't know what happens to him next.
    It did make me realize there was untapped potential to explore Jessie's relationship with his parents and the events that led him down to getting kicked out of the house. Did they give up too early on him? Did he start dealing while he was living there and they had no choice but to kick him out (as is often the case with addicts)?
    Did they reject him because he became a criminal, or did he became a criminal because they rejected him? Watching the movie, I feel more could have been explored there.
    Jessie. He escaped Jack's Gang and Walter's empire, but is forever scarred by what he lived through.

    Kino has a career in Hollywood ahead of him. He should replace Paul Rudd as Ant Man

    Todd gaining then losing like 30lbs in a week or two has to be one of the funniest things this movie does to the BB continuity. Another example why this cash grab was a terrible idea
