I remember one of the times I saw them James jumped down in the crowd during Seek and Destroy. He went row by row screaming "search and" then he'd let a fan scream, "seek and destroy!" He ended on our row. I'll never forget being able to participate. It was 1989, I was 19.
Did the same thing in the New Orleans SuperDome, touring with GNR, Faith NO More opened. Amazing concert.
Saw that concert the opening night in 1992 in DC and he did that. Two guys and a woman were given a chance and were not good. Then another guy growled it and James growled a "YEEEAAAAHHHH!" positive response and the crowd went wild.
Ya know. This is the first time I think I have seen a reaction to a live version of this song. Most people react to the music video which has clips from a movie spliced in. VERY emotional experience.
Also, on the note of them playing on all 7 continents including Antarctica where they played to scientists, they missed an opportunity to play the obvious song they could have played down there, Trapped Under Ice.
Trapped Under Ice: I think they didn't want to be _insensitive_ lol.
I laughed out loud when I got to the bottom of your comment. Spot on! 😁
The masters themselves displaying their sheer power and uniqueness 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Regarding vocal injuries, Metallica toured arenas for some 2 years nonstop, almost daily, in the early 1990s, back when James used to sing like an animal - in a good way, musically, but probably in a bad way from a health perspective. I’m impressed that he has any singing voice at all nowadays!
James blew out his voice on the black album tour. I believe 92 or 93
@@Outlawtorn3711I heard it was during the garage Inc album days
@@MotionlessHorizxn I mean he did damage his voice recording the So What cover but recording the black album he lost it completely
@@Outlawtorn3711 ah, thank you!
13:10 Beth, your seagull impression made my day. I rewound and watched it 5 times. 🙌🏽
Haha
I like your positive attitude on these videos - it is always easier to work to find the good in things! Love the channel Beth!
To be fair, perhaps you should have reacted to a live performance from back in 1989 when they were first touring for the And Justice for All album.
His singing is far better here than in 89.
@@ianwakersno way, he lost his voice a long time ago
@@jonike6Then try actually listening to the performance. His voice is great, and, compared to 89, has actual melody and stays in the right key.
@@jonike6that’s a stupid statement
His voice is amazing nowadays, probably better than ever, he recovered from his wounds and his sobriety has almost fully cleaned his tone and allowed his range to truly shine once again. Also he clearly is on vocal couching 24/7 which is allowing him to force his throat once more without missing notes or breaking his voice. @@jonike6
Back in the day W.H. Smiths had a record department and electronics department. That is where I saw the video of this on a big plasma screen while wandering about looking at the bargain bins. I was transfixed. I had heard of them, but never heard them before... The way the whole piece was constructed to tell a story was *Bleeping* epic.
I love this song and I can’t wait to see your reaction.
Hehe awesome reaction video Beth..one of the greatest heavy rock ballads of all Times..witnessed live back in 2019..was Something beyond memorable..the energy and the heat from those flames..epic..a live gig that it's a must..u should check their old live videos of one and Justice Era..those are the Gold🤘🤘 rock on Beth
Wooowww now let's talk about real CLASSICS!!! Back in the day i remember to listening metallica a one 24/7 !! As always thank you, from the heart, for your incredible work and reaction as usual =) i hope that i can recommend you some music from this part of the planet earth to watch your beautiful reaction 😊😊 Keep going Beth! You're doing incredible, lots of love!
Oh Beth, this is a song where the official video is an absolute must. Just an epic masterpiece.
The music video distracts too much from the music
@@bob-ov4iq No, it doesn't. The music video for the song "One" just adds to it.
@@TokusatsuGamingfanIt does a bit if you don't get it but it was written as a result of war and what war can do, as well as propaganda during war from all sides of the war. What it can do to people and leave them broken. It's basically written in the perspective as the guy from "Jamie Got his Gun" about a kid who goes off to war and comes back completely broken physically and mentally. IT definitely adds to the lore behind the song.
@@zaynes5094 "Johnny Got His Gun" the name of the book as well as the movie is "Johnny Got His Gun". I also know what the the song is about, I've been listening to it for a long time.
James’s head voice on the “Please God NOOOO!” is very classic rock/metal. Love it. Great reaction as always, Beth!
Yes, he got surgery back in the 90s after the black album tour. That’s when his sound changed and people like to hate on it now. I think he sounds fine especially considering the circumstances.
Hetfield developed a wide range of vocal abilities throughout the years compared to his 1989 vocals
Not a band I would normally choose for her reaction but this song in particular night be interesting. A lot of emotion in this.
Beautiful
if you ever get the chance to see metallica live i would highly recommend it. they were awesome.
Hi Beth. Probably one of a very few times I'd say please see the video for this song. Live is my favorite, but you'll understand when you watch. 🙂
I agree with other comments check out the actual video to this in your spare time. Add a different context and enhances the story being told within the song.
Hetfield also had real issues w alcoholism for a lot of his career. I saw them at the now defunct Pontiac Silver Dome. 2.5 hour show which was epic. This song was a high point
True living gods of metal.
within thrash metal the only singer I can think of that comes to mind that actually uses vibrato when singing is Joey Belladonna from Anthrax. As you say its not TYPICALLY a style that is suited to it. One of the interesting things about modern Metallica doing One vs the studio recording and old live version is how much James has changed how he sings. He has a older man's voice now, those raw thrash screams of the first 4 albums have been replaced by a much smarter if less aggressive approach to singing. James makes up for it by adding some really cool ornamentation to the live versions of One nowadays. And yes they have changed the tuning for most of their older songs to allow for this different singing approach.
Slane Castle! I was there! Such a fantastic night and such a lonnng walk to and from where the buses dropped us off!
I first heard this on guitar hero 3. Not knowing that 10 years later metallica would be my first concert back in 2016. Still my favorite concert of the dozen I’ve been to.
Gotta check out the music video on your spare time. It provides great context to this.
Los conciertos de Metallica los estaba iniciando con la musica "el extasis del oro" de Ennio Morricone de la pelicula el bueno,el malo y el feo.
Great reaction! I remember when this album first came out, I had the t-shirts, the cassettes and cassette single (of ONE, B - Side The Prince by Diamondhead AND still have it to this very day!) and of course I had the Back Patch on my Blue Jean Jacket. I was and still am, an Unrepentant Teenage Metal Head!🤘
What an elaborate stage they have these days. Use d to be just speakers and a backdrop back in the day. Kudos to them for evolving through the decades.
Glad you went with a live version.
I've seen too many get caught up in the video and not listening to the song. Neither the lyrics or the music.
Nice reaction, congrats for your album release
Congrats on the album!
I get to meet James Hetfield next Saturday in Detroit. I can’t wait!!!
I saw them in Madrid and James is a vocal monster. Glad you like Metallica 🙂
I was at this gig 🇮🇪 !! That was 4th time seeing them. Brilliant!
Great surprised to see you react to one of my long time favorites and see you headbang a little 😁 .....oh and for spooky season i would suggest the band Helloween with the songs Helloween and Keeper of the seven keys😊
So much genius about this song, like the “landmines” part the guitars and drums are actually playing “SOS” in morse code.
Trying to think of all the great animal comparisons Beth uses to explain how to achieve certain sounds. The "Seagull" noise is a new one to me. My favorites are "The Grumpy Bear" to create space and "The Crying Puppy" to add a cry sound to your vocals. Entertaining and informative!
I hope you and your album do very well.. good vibes
I was there my second time at Slane. The first was U2 in 2001. They are mates in fact when Metallica done Slane U2 sent them gift baskets.
I was at this show. It was incredible with 80,000 of my best friends!
Grandeeeeeeeeee................ espectáculoooooooooo........ me encanta su música son gigantes gracias Big Beth 👏👏🍀🍀
I wish that you would have reacted to the performances from the Seattle 1989 or San Diego 1992 shows with this song because those performances perfectly capture Metallica in their prime.
The Official video is really the way to watch this one. All the film used from old movies about survivors of World War One is really powerful.
All the movie clips in the video clip is from the one movie "Johnny got his gun" which Metallica ended up buying the rights too
Lots of Love From INDIA 🇮🇳❤😊
Every one of us that played in Hardcore Punk bands, Straightedge bands, etc. in the 90s sought the sound that Kirk Hammett managed so powerfully with his guitars. It was interesting to hear the variations that James Hetfield used in this version and it's clear that he was staying away from a lot of the higher octaves that he used to pull in the original versions. The callous has scared him off trying some of them I'm sure. There were a lot more sudden jumps in scale that he avoided. Solid as ever though. What a moving show with the war visuals before and during. Never got to see them live unfortunately.
This song in Seattle 89 is one of the best metal live songs in the world.React it :)
FYI: Voice Play does the Metallica cover of Nothing Else Matters a Capella style.
IN my opinion James Hetfield is very underated as a vocalist. He has a voice for sure designed for metal, but he also has a very soft side to his voice that is magic. And the way he sings has one of the best qualities needed to be a great singer. He has passion! He feels the lyrics as he sings them. His voice touches me.
The official video of this song is the best way to get the complete picture of the music and lyrics!
METALLICA: ONE FROM THE AND JUSTICE FOR ALL ALBUM 1988.
Taking from a movie called: Johnny Got His Gun which I rented back in 89 when this video came out! My college roommates and I including our girlfriends were balling our eyes after it was over😭😭😭😭 we all had people in the Military particularly the ARMY and MARINE CORPS!!! One of my roommates uncle served in Vietnam along with my dad in the ARMY and they said one guy got almost blown to bits stepping on an IED and both arms and legs were gone but he did not survive! THANK YOU TO ALL OUR COMBAT VETERANS AND CURRENT MILITARY SERVING IN WAR ZONES IN PARTICULAR❤️❤️❤️ 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I was there. Great day with Ghost and Stiff Little Fingers supporting.
top 5 song all time.
Hi Beth, react to the unforgiven III live with the San Francisco symphony, great vocal performance by hetfield.
Dang. Was really hoping this was to the official video. Makes all the difference.
She almost always reacts to live performances to hear the actual vocals vs production.
@@alethea507 I'm aware. And most times I'm way cool with that. But for THIS song? Nah. Lol
That guitar solo really paints a haunting picture of the panic and anxiety Johnny must have felt
Btw I can absolutely recommend the movie that inspired this song. Johnny Got His Gun
Great reaction Beth!! ❤ Metllica’s One is the first song that I heard from them that blew me away back in the day. Pls react to Spiritbox’s new song called “Jaded”.
I was there 🤘
You should check out Chris Cornell's cover of this song, but to the tune of U2's One. It's a mash up that shouldn't work but does so well.
Agreed, it gives a different feel but still captures the magic
Good luck on the new release! Hope you sell out. Cheers from USA.
Thanks Michael!
James had lost his voice during the recording of the "Black Album", so he had to see a voice coach to make sure he didn't lose his voice again. He warms up his voice before every concert.
I wonder how many people listening to this song realize its probably twice as old as they are.
Not many people are as powerful of a frontman as James is live.
You did your research
react to the song ''Zeca Veloso - Todo Homem'', I think you'll like it
Celtic Woman also performed at Slane Castle.
12:17 The Frayed Ends Of Sanity 😂😂😂
Chris Cornell did a great acoustic cover of this songs lyrics mixed with the guitar of U2s “One”
Man, what's it like living under a rock.
Fun fact: James never wanted to be the singer, they tried a few times to find a singer, even approaching Glen Danzig. James always considered himself more of a "barker" than a singer, but later on started training his voice, like Black Album time frame.
The seagull tone you did was funny as 😅
Fun Fact: If you've ever seen/heard Tenacious D: Tribute, this is the song the Tribute is about.
That is the song that hooked me onto metal. MuchMusic could not play it enough for me.
Yay, finnaly!
Fun fact 2: there were some fans that went to the Antarctica gig with Metallica. But only like a couple of dozen or so...
I absolutely love the mental image of Hetfield going "CA-CAW" while backstage to warm up his voice. Thanks for that!
James would totally do that.
@@daniloliveira95 He would, if his vocal therapist said so. He used to be attached to a walkman with an exercise tape constantly, as per one of the backstage documentaries several years after... took it incredibly seriously, as he should.
Hey Beth, great reaction. I'd love to see you react to another Nightwish song-it's been a while it seems. "Romanticide" is the one I'd love to see you react to next.
You should watch the original music video which includes part of the movie Johnny Get Your Gun that Metallica bought the rights to.
Id wish you listen to W.A.S.P witch might be way out there on the "PC\wholesome" scale, BUT! the vocals are IN-sane! Blind in texas comes to mind
Ms. Roars I have a question for you. As we age so do our voices, they tend to get lower. Is there away to bring back a higher registrar? Is there food or drink one could take to assist with rehabilitation of the vocal chords? Coud surgery restore some of that youthfulness? Geoff Tate for example still can hit the higher range, most singers can't. Is it just to much for a vocalist to get regimented and do the work or is it just a non reversible symptom of aging?
Hey! Your voice is the same as the rest of our body. So general health helps vocal health. So first of all gentle exercise, your body and your voice. Try scales gently moving up into the higher range, take your time and don't push. Eat nutritious food, drink plenty of water (very important) and try to avoid toxins (alcohol, mold, pollution etc). It is also important to note our voices do change as we age so you might just need to adjust your technique to work with this new voice. A good vocal coach can help you immensely. In terms of reversibility, well it depends on what is causing the problem and if there is any damage. You can certainly gain a dramatically more youthful quality whatever your starting point. Will you sounds like you are 20 again, probably not. But with practice and looking after your voice you can sound this an amazing version of the current you!
Hope you do vocal reaction to Robert Palmer
An legendary artist you havent done yet ❤
Check out Syd Arthur, Canterbury sound and the singer is amazing. You could alternatively check out Pond from Perth Australia for some not great singing.
Beth, I think a thing you lack is having experience with a band onstage (doesn't even have to be rock/punk!)
In today's world, there are "in-ear" monitors! (And, the lead singer no longer has to SING LOUD to even hear themselves!)
(Beth, I challenge you! Try a few choice songs from your album LIVE without "in-ear"! Rely just on wedge monitors and/or
FOH to sing!) Just as an experiment!
Think the original video is the best version to watch even though the live is awesome you get more meaning with the original
All for one 1⃣ crazy Aussie
Beth, I am surprised you have not dived into any Triumph yet?
jesteś bardziej skoncentrowana niż przecier pomidorowy :D 👍
I was actually at this haha
yeah they pplayed in antarctica and did NOT play their song "trapped under ice"!!!!!! i'm still not over that miss!!!!!
First contact with "one" should be made through the original video; they so well complete each other.
.... Oh...! It's not your first with the song!
While this was a pretty great live version of the song, I strongly suggest you give the official video a go. Pretty fantastic video that actually _adds_ to the song.
More Metallica please 🤘🤘
You should have reacted to the official video.
I've never heard of James having nodules, but I think he started changing his vocal in the 90's to avoid it.
Please do Staind Blow Away Jacksonville
Wait, is Lars choosing "not" to play the fills toward the end? Almost looks like he just opts out lol.
Hello! I would like to suggest that you react to the song "Sapato Velho", by the Brazilian band "Roupa Nova". It's a beloved band here in Brazil, their vocal harmonies are unique, it would be really cool for you to analyze their voices...
Of all the bands over the past 40 years, I think Metallica has held up the best. James Hetfields voice still sounds good!
Iron Maiden?
Metallica is a level higher than all other great bands…..their stage presence is otherworldly 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
@@stigpetersen9701 and breaking stadium attendance records!
@@palloslevente There was that "big 4" show where the bands got together, and I think it's a Bulgaria performance where they switch around parts playing Diamondhead's "Am I Evil?", and it definitely shows James had even then handily surpassed everyone else vocally.
With all the nonsense going on, ty for this bby. TY
You are on to something with your vocal fry 😮😮😮
It may be my cellphone, but I tried the links to spotify and they are all broken. I'd like to pre-save the album on spotify but dont know how. Thanks! Great Video!
