    Hey James, thanks for the two videos. I too am out in the country and take great lengths to setup a wireless network on the farm.
    I ran into an issue where the battery wouldn't recharge, going to test it a bit more before deciding to return it, that said... Reading the netgear forums from the aussie/telestra folk when they got this first... the reason that they think it reboots is a power issue. The USB Type C wall charger charger that Netgear supplies with the Nighthawk is rather low wattage for a USB Type C device. The battery being inbetween the charger and the unit helps buffer any power draw spikes I figure. However, when you remove that, if the unit is performing heavy tasking (High number of clients, LAN routing, high bandwidth, low signal (since if there's a low signal between the Nighthawk and the tower, the radio has to work harder), etc.), the power draw from the unit outstrips the power supplied by the wall charger. Netgear basically responded and said it was only designed for "intermittent use".
    Anyhow, what some of the aussies did is they got a heavier charger. Like a 12W Apple iPad charger, or one from a Pixel. They were then able to run it mostly without any problems. That may be something you want to test.
    I'm not using this as a primary internet either (You probably also are getting your internet from some sort of WISP), but I tossed it an extra line on my plan since DirecTV Now has "Data Free" streaming on AT&T plans as long as it's done through the mobile app, which means it doesn't count against your 22gb soft cap for Unlimited Plans.
    Have you done any more testing since this video? Any more issues that you've found? I'm still in my 14 day trial period for this so I'm doing a lot of research.

      Mirkali Maricadie they don't advertise it but it's qualicom quick charge 3.0 compatible. Right now I'm out for the week with it as a connection for the whole family. I would say as a back up internet it's great but if your dream is using it as a primary internet... I'm not sold on that with atat network yet.

    To make it clear, if you use a Quick charge 3.0 with backwards 2.0 compatibility charging adapter this will solve the rebooting without a battery issue, the charger that came with this device isn’t providing enough power for the device. Netgear has confirmed this.

      James, have you tested this yet...or you still traveling? I noticed that when the nighthawk screen is ON, and you are transferring data, it reboots. I set my screen timeout to the shortest...and I turn it on to check whatever, and then I tap the power button (usually twice) to turn the screen off before I start downloading, etc. Do we need to buy a quick charge 3.0 USB C cable? I thought thats what this was.

    • @101knorrell
      @101knorrell 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      David Moran the cable that came with the nighthawk will work fine, you need to purchase a Quick charge 3.0 brick(Amazon has them pretty good price). My Nighthawk hotspot has been on 2 weeks straight without rebooting and not issues. I no longer keep a Battery in mine either.

  • @herriedejong6653
    @herriedejong6653 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is the M1 also a voice/telephone signal repeater?
    We have without our Cross polarized Yagi antenne no mobile internet.
    I am looking for a mobile cell phone connection extender with also an extra data output LAN.
    I am looking now for a LTE 4g extender with voice repeater and one LAN output for data to a balancing TP-Link router.
    We use a polarized double Yagi Antenna from Halo&Son in Austria for Band 28 and this works very well and we want it to be connected to the extender.

    You can play PS4 and Xbox One on a Double NAT, match making nowadays keeps strict NAT in mind and servers are a good middle man to connect players without confliction between NAT types. Ping is much more important and anything over 100 ur gonna get judder and a sub par experience.

    For anyone using T-Mobile and getting a "Mobile Broadband Disconnected" message on their Nighthawk M1, I called T-Mobile about this issue and they said that tablet lines are no longer compatible with this device. You have to have an "internet line" to be able to use this device (which are ridiculously expensive). I suspect T-Mobile identifies these types of devices by IMEI/MAC Address and then blocks it if it's not a tablet. I wonder if MOFI LTE Modems are affected.

    Now my final edition... since I’ve had this amazing device, I’ve spend 200$ on the antenna set up. Antenna plus wires, shipping and handling. I plan on getting a second one as well. The first help tremendously. Hopefully I can double that. Anyway if there is ATT signal, it’s usually fair. I’ve been as high as 72mbs and as low as well, nothing. My states I travel... CA mostly 20s to low 30s. Unless you are on the i5 heading north. Low signal to none. Between Bakersfield to San Francisco. I don’t usually go any higher. South of Bakersfield( out of grapevine) 20s to 30s. All the way to AZ down to San Diego. Mountains of course play big effect on any signal.
    Arizona i10 pretty fair till after Tucson. Starts dropping.
    New Mexico, around 10s to 30s on the i10,

    • @JamesMccorn
      @JamesMccorn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, Congrats on your purchase! I made this video almost two years ago. That said a few things to note: You need to set the Nighthawk 6700 into access point mode. Its a setting in the options for when you manage it. To property set up the network on your M1 mobile router you will need to make sure DHCP is running and internet standby is disconnected. You will also need to keep the M1 plugged in with a qualicom quick charger 3.0 as the default charger does not deliver enough power to the unit to run it full time. From the M1 router plug in a Ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports of your Nighthawk 6700 (not the wan port). From their your setup will look very much like mine in the video. I run the M1 into a 48 port switch and then into two nighthawks (a x6 and a x8 set in access point mode). Hope this mini tutorial helps set you on the right path.

    So that I am not going stupid here, you obviously connected a switch to that hotspot, theoretically you can just plug in a hardwire (single computer/device) cat ethernet cable and the hotspot will still deliver data to that computer correct?
    My confusion is, after checking out other videos on TH-cam about the Nighthawk M1, it has been said you're only able to use that as a router to achieve data, esstentially making the ethernet port an INPUT only.
    So I guess my question is, even after showing me that you have proven you can hardwire a modem and provide internet from the Cell Tower -> Nighthawk M1 -> Hardwire / Ethernet cable -> device and it will work?
    It just baffles me that other people saying you cannot use the ethernet port that way, only can hook it up from another router and piggy back from that.
    And one last question, as for the AT&T plan, if you may pretty please share the information with me, that is your plan Unlimited with No throttle -- is that a current plan, or are you granfathered in?

    • @JamesMccorn
      @JamesMccorn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi code, you have a good eye for the truth. So here is some truth. The m1, if it detects a dhcp server,(like a cable or dsl modem) switches to the connection sharing mode. If it does not detect any dhcp server (ie you unplug the cable modem and plug the m1 in with the same cable), it becomes the dhcp server and that's how I used it in the video. So it becomes the router for the whole network. Yes it works and can work quite well if your not in a hole in the ground like me. Sadly for your last question, atat no longer offers it as a unlimited hotspot on any plan atm. Mine is grandfathered in but should anything change I'll be sure to post a video on it.

      Logan Leray, Hi Logan, in the instructions the default user name and password are provided to help you log in the first time. If you are still having trouble, you can do a factory reset on the device (see instructions) to get the username and password back to the instruction manual default. Wish you luck.

    it really looked like to me from this video that you could really use some external antennas you sure know a lot about computer engineering but looks like you don't know the first thing about how wireless networks work. Isolate that hotspot as much as possible away from any other wireless devices and at the highest point in the house since you said you were between three mountains.

    • @JamesMccorn

      It's a mobile router that takes your carriers data plan and converters it into wifi and ethernet. You must check in your local country for compatibility and data restrictions for the plan you are on. Not everything that glitters is gold and so to with data plans. Not all data plans can be used on any device. Some have restrictions on the device it can be used in.

      Thanks James, so I live in the US, and I have a LTE 75GB data plan a month. So I can just take my phone sim card and insert it into this device, make some internal router changes to make it look for verizon and it should run off of that instead of my mobile hot spot which is only 30GB per month.. If so that would be great..

    Hello, how did you hooked another router (make it wired) to Nighthawk LTE Mobile Hotspot Router - AT&T? The instructions dont say you can do that other then for Offloading Data? I tried and couldn't. I would be very nice to know the secret for all of us. Could you share it please?

    • @JamesMccorn
      @JamesMccorn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi aloha 9dvr, sometimes the instructions do not tell you everything, (see the fact that the mifi supports quick charge but they do not include a quick charger in the box) with that said. The way you get it working is to just plug in a ethernet cable to anything you want. As long as the mifi is the only router on the network it will act as one. However if it detects another router it switches to offloading data as a dumb accesspoint. So if you were wondering what I did it was simple. I disconected the cable modem in my networking cabinet and ran the cable to the mifi. Please note you will absolutly need the battery plugged in and the power hooked up if you want to do this in a more perminate situation. Hope that helps

      dasabeke dont know where you live but here in the U.S. depending on how many lines you have and the plan you sign up with atat (the only carrier for this hotspot atm) the cost can very. Atat has two unlimited plans, one capped on speed and the other less so. As this hotspot can break gigabit speed, might as well go for the faster plan. I have multiple lines, so this hotspot costs me $20 per line per month. I have 8 active lines... With ping that high your speed could be 100 and your computer can still be slow. I think he needs to move it or get an antenna. You could be getting 5 mps with low ping and computer will run much faster than 50 mps with high ping. I own the nighthawk hotspot. router at&t. It will not run without the battery. it will start but then shut off, just like in the video. We live pretty far out in the sticks. Our ping average is between 45 - 55 anything higher whatever your doing starts lagging or buffering if streaming or playing games, which i do.{ at least that is what happens to me} I can and do play call of duty and other like games. We have 3 computers and sometimes 2 phones using the hotspot . Because of what i enabled on my pc in settings i range from 30 - 60 mps download 5 for upload on average. I" am connected directly to hotspot. The other 2 computers run on wifi they range from 12 - 22 mps DL 5 UL. our average use is around 400 gb a month with all devices.
    The bad side is we have to reboot quite a lot. If i am on pc and someone starts theirs up, internet crashes and have to reboot. if ping becomes to high we reboot. a lot of times internet will become very slow, we reboot, sometimes 10, 15 times {or more} a day.

    • @JamesMccorn
      @JamesMccorn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Logan Leray speed is dependent on your distance to the tower, any obsticals in your way to the tower, tower congestion, antenna aggregation tech (2 or 4x mimo) deployed on the tower, frequency bonding and the backhaul fiber run to the tower. Any one if these will affect your top speed. By the by I don't work for any of the cell carriers so I can't really help you beyond that... if it means anything I live in a urban environment and I get 26 mbps on average but at 3 am I can get close to 100mbps and the best part of the nighthawk is that when atat gets faster it's ready for those speeds.

    • @JamesMccorn
      @JamesMccorn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi SonofMarvin, I have not tried using Ethernet all the time, as the mifi is my secondary internet connection when mobile and a backup for the home when I am home from traveling. My video does highlight some interesting uses for the Nighthawk as a primary internet. Since this video, I do have some additional thoughts on the matter. If I were to do it again, I would run my house through a router first then to the Nighthawk. I would then configure the nighthawk to DMZ the router so all the heavy lifting would be done by the router as opposed to the Nighthawk. Reason being that with my situation. I have so many clients 16+ and lots of network traffic that the little SOC (System on a chip) that the mifi rocks would get overwhelmed with the traffic and cause latency to rise (see video) as everything gets backed up and has to wait its turn. Worth testing out.. Let me know how your setup goes and what you learn as im intrested to see how it works out for you.
