First round with the new Ping ChipR on Friday. It went really well. I used it from 90 out to on the fringe. The acid test - it went closer. I won't let my ego stop me lowering my scores, so in the bag it goes!
I have been playing with a Cleveland smart sole chipper for a few months now. It is now my main club that I chip with from many situations. I am a decent chipper, but this club has made me even better. The Cleveland chipper is very similar to the ping. The main difference is that the Cleveland is probably much lighter. Great video as always. Thank you. P.s. I maybe the only golfer who carries 2 chippers in my bag. I also carry the e club chipper which is much more like a putter, but is more rounded and less lofted than many of the other putter style chippers. Both of my chippers come in very handy and each has their purpose. Chipping is where the scoring is
I'm a five handicap, I have a good short game, but I also like putting together a 7-club easy carrying Sunday bag - I could easily put a chipper in that bag and really enjoy playing it. My guess is that most seniors could play with 4 clubs: a 7wood, a 7hybrid, a chipper, and a putter and probably beat their current handicap - it's probably worth a video to try the experiment.
@Ode Peralta Yes. Being a nine means your short game is either amazing with a below-average iron and wood game or you have a slightly poor short game and are a decent iron and wood player - the last being Andy - and why I see him putting this club in the bag. If you can make a weakness into not a weakness, it's a double win.

He just did some joint videos with James Robinson - where you can actually see Andy's shortgame - and yes, he's a nine - and why he will likely be putting the Ping ChipR in the bag. All the love for Andy - he doesn't hide anything.
I am pretty sure that most high handicap golfers regardless of their age would shoot better scores just using them 4 clubs!
I had my first round today using my new Ping ChipR. On the 3rd hole, a Par 5, my 2nd shot from the tee rested at 15 paces from the green & the cup was 15 paces from the edge of the fringe (I walked it off). I focused on my landing area, took a confident stroke - a ChipR-In for Eagle!
I will admit that I utilized my ChipR throughout the round in situations that I normally would have & should have played other clubs. Yet, if you do not try it in real time game situations you will never know.
I can honestly say that the ChipR saved me more than several strokes today. I am still dialing in utilizing this new club & overall I am very satisfied with it. I stroked some very good to great chips & a few not so perfect ones. I had 5 up & downs for par - with 29 total putts.
My ChipR will be in my bag for a long time. :)
After seeing Crossfield’s success with his Cleveland chipper, I was really hoping Ping would come out with something in the chipper realm. I’m glad to see they have. This is a must buy for me. Your view was great, appreciate your videos, and I look forward to more.
I got the Cleveland Smart Wedge C, for us average golfers trying to break 80 it’s a much more versatile club than some reviewers make it out to be (Rick Shields). If you’re a near scratch player that can hit flops or wants the extra long club in the bag, or what not it’s probably not for you. But if you’re a mid to high handicapper and you struggle with short game then you’re crazy if you don’t have one!
Chippers are not anything new, they've been around for ages. They're just not fashionable at the moment. All it would take is for a pro to win a tournament with one and they'd fly off the shelves.
You use a driver for driving and a putter for putting, so why not a chipper for chipping? Makes sense to me. What do you need 4 wedges with weird bounces and grinds for anyway?
They’re a one trick pony and won’t be versatile enough to get close to all pin positions, especially with a strong 38 degrees of loft.
I think they're useful. My point really is that I don't think people should feel embarrassed about having a specialist chipping club in the bag if it works for them.
You're correct. Back when I first started golfing in the early 80's, I had a chipper. Not sure where I got it or what ever happened to it, but I had one. I have a Cleveland Smart Sole now and while it does not replace my 56 if I am in taller grass or a bunker, it is still a very versatile, accurate and easy to use club.
All good points! Some players, including professionals, also use a wood or hybrid at times from light rough instead of using a putter.
Never heard of bunkers or flop shots ?
I have a Ping Chipo from around 1975. 5 iron loft and 9 iron shaft. I put a puttning grip on it and start to use it again a couple of month ago. Not great feeling but nice to use when you start thinking to much about your chipping technic.
I put a smart sole c in the bag a few weeks ago and I'm glad I did. Already a couple chip ins, and numerous par saves with it. I'm a decent chipper using my wedges, but the bump and run makes a lot of sense around the green where using a lofted wedge is unnecessarily risky. The chipper makes learning that shot easy.
I am with you, James. I have a Smart Sole C in my bag as well. Mark Crossfield put me onto it and because my home course gets a ton of play, we have a bunch of tough lies and the Smart Sole C goes right through it. I am still improving with it, but I am eliminating the big score...for now. I fully expect to be getting up and in more regularly soon!
To Andy's last point, my wedge setup was 45-49-54-59. With the chipper, I have gone to 45-52-58. I am getting some new P790s at 2 degrees weaker, so the wedge setup will be even better - 47-52-58. Handicap has not gone up. Onward!
I also added the Smart sole C to my bag a year ago. Love it! Most used club next to my putter.
I use a chipper and I’m not ashamed. I’m trying to break 90 not win awards for the coolest looking bag. My question is whether this performs better than current market chippers or just looks cooler for twice the cost
The Chipr looks like a nice addition to the bag. I like to use my wedges with a putting motion to chip but lie angle has me toe down which sometimes causes problems. The ChipR with 70 Degree lie angle is the same as my putter and this club is only an inch longer. I may have to pre-order. Thanks for the review!
I'm starting to feel very comfortable with my ChipR. I think it was your video that convinced me to get one. It wasn't easy, they were scarce in Northern California, finally got one while visiting family in Arizona. Thanks
I recently purchased an "accuchip" chipper at a thrift store for $2. It looks just like a Wilson 8802 putter. It is 36" long. It has a graphite shaft so is considerably lighter than my Ping. I have used it a few times and am completely in love with it. I have used it for just about every shot around the green but the sand trap. Today i had a 50 yard shot to the green from under a tree. I set the club back in my stance to reduce loft and hit a low one under the tree and up onto the raised green landing 6 feet from the flag. On the last few holes in stead of carrying a wedge and a putter up onto the green I just took the chipper. I used it to both chip and putt the hole. I was amazed at how well I putt with it (better than with my Ping). I am 74 years old so always striving to find a lighter set of clubs to carry. Next time out i will be carrying a 5 wood, 6 and 9 irons, a 76 degree wedge (for sand) and the chipper - no driver or putter.

I've been messing around with the Cleveland chipper for a few weeks. It looks more promising the more I work with it. The trick is to get your head wrapped around the idea of using a putter motion. That took a little time for me.
Others have mentioned just using a 7 or 8 iron for this job. Yes, that works perfectly for some people. I've tried it and I just can't get the pace right, usually sending it way past the hole. I have way more control over the pace with a chipper.

Just bought one. I'm a chipper convert, having swapped my odessey xact chipper for the Ping. The chipr is far better. My first shot was 40 yards and I put it next to the hole. The rest of the round I was so impressed. As you say I think it is more versatile than people think and I'm looking forward to trying this out. Most reports on this say it's very good, but a one trick pony. I totally disagree and think your video on this club is the best one I've seen. Thankyou, you've confirmed my views on the club. I would recommend people try it, if they have any doubts about their short game.
I use a 5 hybrid. I chip in a lot. I also 1 putt a lot. All down to my hybrid getting it close. 16 HC now. Dropped 6 strokes in 8 months since I started using the hybrid around the greens. Very rarely 3 putt now. Maybe once every 3 or 4 games. This has a roll on effect to the rest of my game. I even strike the ball cleaner now because I’m more confident I can get it up and down.
I tried that and could just not get used to the length and lie angle. Cool is works for you though. Loving my Smart Sole now.
I have the original version of this, the Chipo. It is lofted stronger than this club and it may be a little shorter. It is best used from under trees or for long chips. It rolls out quite a bit.
I thought exactly the same today, when I borrowed one from a friend… I hit 15 shots, from different lies, holed twice and never finished more than a couple of feet from the hole. Ordered immediately: now I just have the problem with which club to replace, but this ping club is a no brainer!
Hi Andy, in the winter when the weather is really rough I take a 9 iron for a walk and I'm amazed how good it is around the greens, it hones my short game ,you already have a chipper within your irons
I said the same thing on Rick’s channel. I have played a Ping Chipo forever. Absolutely fantastic club. Different in that it is lofted as an old school 5 iron (29 degrees) and the blade is really long. Shaft is 9 iron length and it is absolutely money. Even over a bunker or funky lies. Just takes some time on the practice ground.
You got me thinking now Andy. I have a Cleveland Smart Sole chipper and love it. The thing I like about it the most is the ability to get the ball on a line - so much easier than a wedge. But I never thought of using it from more than 10-20 yards out. I need to give it a try at those longer distances too.
I use mine from 100 out!
@@doughill6579 Really....nice? I can do 30-40 yards but 100. I did get a Smart Sole 50 degree gap wedge too and that works real well to fill the gap up to my AW.

I used this club for 110 into the green and it worked beautifully. Straight at flag. Pitching wedge, Gap Wedge and Sand Wedge obsolete from fairway.
Seriously considering this. Had thought about it before but now. Probably dropping my ego for a consistent club
Good review, Andy. On every chip I face, I'm trying to use the least amount of loft and the smallest, most controlled swing I can make. This lets you hit the intended part of the face more often for one thing, so your good shots are really good. But the main benefit is that with thin shots or slight stubby ones, the ball is going to end up on the green almost every time - it might be a little further away than you wanted, but you're going to have a putt for your next shot. And sometimes those thin shots end up close as well. I'm a 4 hcp and I'm still often thinking, "get this on the green at all costs" on tricky short shots. And it's basic course management, as well. I'm chipping, which means I've missed the green. So what I don't want to do is compound the error I've just made by following it with another mistake, especially a dumb one.
With a high-lofted wedge and a longer, faster swing, your margin of error shrinks to practically zip. I'm going to keep using my 9-iron, because I'm skilled with it and I prefer a narrower sole for most shots. But I think if everyone put a chipper in the bag and took out any wedge above 52º and played that way for 10 rounds they would see an improvement in their scores. Come to think of it, maybe I'll try it.

Check out the Macgregor chipper too guys- more like a putter which will remind you to use your putting stroke, but looks better than a lot of other chippers out there and (when I purchased it) much cheaper at £40, so a fraction of the cost of the Ping ChipR.
Hi Andy, great content as always! One thing that I would be concerned about, using a putting stroke with this club, would that spoil your putting rhythm? The swing is so much quicker.
Looks nice. I’d try it for sure. I have to be honest , watching me play is just as bad as noticing I have a chipper lol.
andy a test I would like to see would be 20 shots hit with a chipr and then 20 with your goto bag option. repeat for each type of shot fairway rough etc. then take a drone pic to show proximity to hole.

My cousin was deadly accurate with his chipper from 100 yards and in when we were in high school. Couldn't hit anything else but I knew a son as he was within 100 yarfs he was getting up and down.
Have the Cleveland version in the bag! Love it
Had 2 six hole rounds with the Chip R and although my shots (looked nothing like yours by the way)were ugly (because of my nervous YIP style) there was a vast improvement. I still managed to decelerate on one and moved the ball 5 yards
Andy, you probably missed another feature of this club which is the brilliant Ping Dyla Wedge Grip. It’s the standard grip option and is a longer grip that has three marks spaced about 1.5 inches apart. By gripping at the various markings you can dial in your distances. I have them on all my wedges and can hit three distances with the same swing just by gripping down. I had the Odyssey Exact chipper, I play off 2.8 Handicap. I know a pro who used one in the winter but he used GC Quad to test how the ball worked on mis hits from toe and heel. The Odyssey showed little drop off for mis hits from toe or heel. I’m guessing this club will be a winner. I’ll be ordering one!

I purchassed an old Taylor made 3 rescue for a dollar to cut down and use it to chip arround the greens but I found it to good when I used it as it was made for. So recently I found a chipper at the proshop and now use that.
Looks very similar to an old Mizuno chipper I have. Fantastic little club- sits quite upright which suits the putting type stroke.
So I bought this ChipR after seeing you video. Went out and shot my best game finally broke 90 it definately helped my short game. For now Inhave made room in the bag. Thanks

Great video and product. I’ve played golf since I was 10 years old and I get to play about once every two weeks if I’m lucky. I have had a chipper on and off in my golf bag since then. I currently have about 15 of them and currently using a Powerbilt TPS Bump and Run Chipper. I’ve considered investing in a higher end one an$ even looked at the Odyssey Marksman Chipper, but I like the looks of this one really well. I normally use a 7 iron for this job with the v locked arms with the wrist locked and slash iron/putter stroke. Effective, but not stable.
I can't use any wedge on tight lies. I never make contact with the ball, I always thin or fat the shot. Even if I'm 30 yards away, and on a tight lie, I put. I bought a Chipr and it has transformed my short game. Not only can I make perfect contact, I am now confident I will get the ball near the hole. The only drawback is the lack of loft. This club is only when you have room for a rollout. But everything they claim about the club worked effortlessly for me.

Looks great, regardless, practice is key whether you use this or the PW or other club.
I love my chipper, but I only use it 20 yards in. Never felt comfortable beyond this. I’m not your average golfer, 25 handicap, maybe a bit more. 😂
Looks good but defo something I would like to have in the bag for a couple of weeks before shelling out that kind of money for it.
Usually use my 8 iron around the green and generally get decent results.
8 irons work but on tight lies or bad lies....the sole of the "ChipR" is far superior (more stable) and consistent for hitting chip shots.
This must be the day for chipper reviews. I have tried a chipper and I believe it would help my game....but what do I take out of the bag to make room for it.
I have a hybrid instead of long irons and took my 4 iron out to make room for a chipper. I bought the EZ Roll and I can get close to the pin with it. The only problem is the long bottom of it drags on the grass for certain shots. This club won't do that.
Great video! Interesting club! I like the concept. I would consider that over a wedge. Most things can be done with a 56, so you could replace the 60. Thing about chipping is that when I was young, and we only had blade, no specialty wedges except a sand wedge, we learnt to use all the irons for chipping, changing the loft depending on distance (the closer to the green, the lower the loft), using the putting stroke. Seve Ballesteros used to do that and be quite creative, but that seems to have gone out of fashion. I wonder why...
Great looking club. No one should feel ashamed of using one. After all, golf should be fun. I have a Cleveland chipper and finally got my wedge struggling friends to get chippers. They're ALL chipper now. (pun intended) 😋
Every time I see a chipper video I say I should try one but ego kicks in. Weird thing is when I golf, my friends don’t typically ask what I use they just say great shot or dang must of been bad lie. Need to pick this or the Cleveland up and give it a go. Thanks for the video enjoyed as always.
As i am a serial short game struggler I purchased one of these on the back of yours and other reviews, but cannot seem to get any consistency with it.
I would be very interested to know how you set up with this club, middle or back in stance, wide or narrow stance, weight forward or center, etc ??
My golf buddies know my. Chipper stays in my. Bag to the last club. Once one has learned how touse it, itcan be a magic club
But one has to really practice to learn what it can do , even from some really gnarly lies of really varied distances from the green. Commit to reallylearning this. Club.
I’m glad Ping did this. I think a chipper would help most golfers out there, even lower handicaps. Just most chippers are really butt ugly & tough to bag due to your friends making fun, But this chipper really looks great. I would think the bounce would be higher than 8* and maybe a little more loft but maybe Pings onto something. I’ve been experimenting with hybrids around the greens with good success so this is definitely something worth trying.
I think chippers are a great idea. I was hoping Ping would come out with one. Its about time.

When you show the stills of the club at address with a ball it looks like you're closing the face. Like its hooded. Then when you swing the club it looks like a tennis topsin forehand. Is that a specific technique or something youve found works for you?

Does it have the big defect every chipper I use had? They all break very, very easily. I’ve broke 3. This hasn’t happened with any other club for me. Fair enough the first time it happened I was about 80 yards out. The other 2 were well within 30 though. They always look to have a flimsy design flaw where the head meets the shaft
Thanks for the video. I think chippers are made for the golfer who usually misses the green and is just trying to get on it, or really good golfers who have a chipping hole in their game. A few years ago I bought a used 42 degree Cleveland Niblick as a joke, but it's been in my bag ever since. The Niblick was only out for a few years, but then Cleveland came out with their Smart Sole clubs, and they are the same thing. Again, thanks for the great content.
Great video pal 👍. If ping hadn’t put the ChipR on the back it would look awesome. I’d be interested in how it would perform for me and as you say the more you use it the better you’d become but £170 is a bit of a gamble. I play chip shots with 7i to 58° and everything in between my rule get it rolling soon as possible. Looks a lot of fun tho shame ping don’t do a few short game days where you could go and test them out maybe. Keep the quality content coming thanks as always 👍
I’m a 13 hdcp and I started using a chipper from Cleveland, art of their smart sole line. Shot my best round of 82 at a course I usually struggle to break 90. Had a few finish close but my worst chips I 2 putted. With traditional wedges or short irons I’d be good for 3-4 duffs or bladed chips. I feel like I’ll save 5-7 shots a round. Maybe more once I really get a feel for it. Today was the first time I used it exclusively for a round. Took my lob wedge out of the bag.

Just thought I’d ask you. Which wedge did you replace the chipper with. I have 4 of the Cleveland CBX 2, 46/50/54/58. Don’t carry the 46 but carry the other three. I also have the Smart Sole chipper. Thinking of taking the 58 degree out and putting chipper back in. Is this a good substitute?

@@Ariacaraleia I carry a 45 Pw, 50 GW, 54 SW at the moment, took my 58 out. Most of us amateurs that aren’t a 5 handicap or better usually aren’t good enough to use a 58 or 60. I have considered putting a 56 in and taking the 54 out. Haven’t been in the sand since I’ve made the switch haha so haven’t used my 54 out of the trap any lately. Chipper definitely helps keep big numbers off my card. Played again today and shot 83. Had a couple of up and downs. I had zero duffs or thinned shots. Once I get a better feel for distance control I think it’ll be a real weapon and I’ll have a lot more up and downs. But most cases I’m at least getting on the green and walking off no worse than bogey. I was usually leaving myself inside of 10-15 feet on most chips with chipper. And some inside 6 feet. Leaves me something I have half a chance of making and worse case 2 putting. Inside 50-60 yards is by far the weakest part of my game. The chipper is saving shots for sure. I probably won’t shoot par or better with it, but breaking 80 on a regular basis is possible now.

Like you I am struggling to break the elusive 90 but the Chipper gives me some hope now.

Looks fantastic and would certainly improve my short game, but the price is OTT. I will have to stick with my 8 iron until the lottery comes up. Great video again 👍
Practice with your 9 Iron grip down and use the putter stroke , should work the same.
Ye that’s what I do, only difference is the shaft on the chipper will be a lot more upright making the putting stroke easier. Il prob save my money
@@YoYoZamolo so when I can play this shot which is not often on my course due to bunkers etc, I play the same type of shot with 7I to PW. The difference in loft leads to long/short bump and runs with the same backswing.

The only thing I don't get about this chipper is, why go to all that trouble to make it look like a normal club that blends in, but then go stamp "Chip R" on it? BTW I use a Mazel, Square Strike style chipper, which is great from about 50 yards in.
I am glad the made it but I have my G30’s with wide soles and the white dot lie angle so I get to use my regular irons.

This is all good Andy however I have some questions. Which golf club do I take out of the bag to make room for the Chipr. I currently have one of those late night infomercial chippers in my bag right now. I removed my 60° wedge. The chipper if fine as long as nothing is in the path of the ball such as a patch of rough or a bunker. Would if be better for my game to take that same 200.00 US dollars, invest in golf lessons to improve my approach shots and hit more greens? Love the channel!
Third day of the Open Championship and putter is being used a lot from off the green as is usual on a links course. My question is, is one allowed to use a chipper on a links green because of the undulations and chipper not taking a divot?

I like Ping but their products with a glued in bit at the back are often problematic ......I’ll look out for the carbon piece laying on the course, as these things usually fall out at some point.

Hi Andy... question relating to the lie angle of the ChipR. My irons are 2 degrees flat but my Fetch putter is 20° ±2° (out of the box). Should I be looking at a consistent 2 degree flat lie or go with the standard black dot. Any thoughts?

Can this chipper club be used like a normal chip shot set up with the sternum ahead of the ball?
O the strength of this I bought a ChipR. I already use a Chipper but like you said every time it came out the bag it drew comments. Not one comment since using this club. Getting used to it but really pleased with performance. Can you do a follow up on stance I notice you have feet close together and towards back?
With my other chipper I found front stance = roll back stance loft. I’m a long standing 28 handicapper so is it just me or is this correct?
Chippers have been out for decades now all of a sudden because Ping bring one out there are the must have club.
What about punching out under / around trees etc.?
Interested to know if you had it fitted to you, or are you just using the standard?
How does it compare to the Callaway chipper?
If it were capable of full shots I'd say give it a go, but for me it's a bit too one trick pony. Good for intended purpose but it's taking up a slot that limits other options IMO, but I will say if you struggle with chipping it's probably a good option.
Try the Cleveland chipper. I use it from 115 yards and in.
Not surprised ping done this a lot of people playing chippers now especially since alot of courses are hard as rock at the mo and people duffing their chips
If you had Ping green dot irons, would you match this chipper to that?
You should do a review on this club vs some of the Cheapest Chippers on Amazon.. Is there really a difference? Is it worth it?

Hi Andy Im a 16.5 handicap golfer. My short game isn't the best, usually chunk or thin the ball in and around the green. Thinking of getting the Ping ChipR but need some guidance please. I have pitching wedge, a 52, 56 & 60 wedges. My question is which wedge would you drop to replace it with the ChipR.
Personally o find little difference between the 56 & 60 so I am sure either of those would not be missed, I suppose it would be trial and error

I'm new to golf and I dont understand how clubs that help can be frowned upon, which seems to be a common theme in many reviews. By that reasoning, everyone should be using Hickory clubs or blades, surely. I climb too, and every modern peice of safety kit developed, is an aid to enjoyment and pushing the sport further. It just seems that some golfers need to get over themselves. Maybe??

Most people would be better off dropping the lob wedge and putting in the chipper.
Most of you TH-camrs have made these very popular of late, I picked up a Cleveland and find it gives you a false sense of security. Just as many duffs and flubs as with an 8 iron. I thought it would be a magic wand, but it’s not. Practice your wedges and chip and runs, just my take, thanks for your channel.
Bet you didn't know they make chippers in all different lofts now, they are called a set of irons.lol.
It hits like a 9 iron withit gets the ball in the air like one. You just have to play around with it to get the feel.
Why not do the same with your 9 iron? Maybe a couple other clubs also.
It's called...practicing... that will improve your game.
There are cheaper options. Square strike or the mazel, one of which you can select the loft you want. I think it's overpriced for the typical 'chipper' player. Maybe Taylormade will be bringing out a carbon faced one soon.

You talk of this as a wedge replacement, but if it's basically a highly forgiving 9 iron, why can't you make all of the intended shots with your 9 iron?
Also, if it's kind of a hybrid putter, would you ever put a putter grip on it?
