Conrail abandoned this tunnel. In 1991, Which was the original.1854. its the Gallitzin. The second bore was the Allegheny tunnel where they widened and double tracked and made clearance for intermodal trains. The portage tunnel is very short and mainly used for eastbound gen freight
Glad to see somebody doing some exploration in pennsylvania there's a lot there. I don't live there anymore. I moved out to the southwest , but maybe you want to hit some locations in monroe county in the poconos. There's some location like penn hills and some other areas that are just outside of the mount airy lodge , which is now a casino up in mount pocono. But all over monroe county is all kinds of abandoned locations.
The abandoned Summit Tunnel. Other Tunnel is Allegheny Tunnel. A third tunnel is the New Portage Tunnel. They are collectively known as the Gallitzin Tunnels.
Awesome video, been a while since i was in Gallitzin. I figured there would be tunnels around there. 22 just gives you teases of whats out there from the windows
you are deff trespassing into the gallitzin tunnel. Smh X( The tunnel is collapsing in on itself you deff put ya self in danger. once you pass the yellow gates on birds eye road to the right thats rr property.
Hahaha, you’re not wrong!! The mine on my channel was actually super close to this tunnel! Lots of coal mines out here but a lot of them are collapsed sadly But you got that right 😂😂
I was out in Cambria County for about 3 months on a huge construction project. We got some local guy from a bar to show us a cool Iron Mine. But be very careful out there as apparently Methane is very prominent in a lot of these abandoned mines in that to the point they set up some plants to source it and renew it into Natural Gas. You'll black out before you even knew it was coming.@@lastadventurer
@@jimmyjams5 That's really cool man, I love exploring abandoned mines! But thank you for the tip about the gases, there's definitely a lot of dangers in these mines and that's a good one to know about. 😄
Yeah man! 577 could probably advise better on what type of meter to use but I can tell you when they setup a plant to reclaim excess Methane, that's a sign its probably pretty prominent in the area.@@lastadventurer
I have in-laws in Gallitzin. I've sat at the museum many times and fantasized about exploring the tunnels. Thanks for posting.
Of course!!! I am glad you enjoyed!
Pretty cool. My 3 x Great Uncle was the first engineer through those tunnels.

I've been in that abandoned tunnel from the east portal about ten years ago but didn't walk in very far because it had a lot of water in it.

Hardhats please...You can't predict those collapses but you can protect your head.
Definitely something I’m going to start doing, especially with all the caves I plan to visit. Thank you and thanks for watching 😄

Is this a tunnel that has tracks merge (AKA a switch) within it?
No it doesn't. Neither of the still in use tunnels have switches in them.

I've photographed trains at Gallitzin before. It's crazy that's what it looks like inside the abandoned tunnel. Very good video.

Great video. Fantastic subject. The only thing missing is a view of the entrance to the tunnel.
Thank you very much!! If you check out the short on my channel, it features the entrance! 😄
Nice, with all the orange AMD in there I thought there might be a mine around.
