    I had a neighbor pass away in an apartment building several doors down from me. I came home from working out of town for a week in the middle of the night. The stench was so bad that I decided to go visit my parents for the week. When I was packing to leave the next morning, I saw a man in a hazmat suit in the hallway. He said that the man had been dead for about a week. How someone could live in a home with a decaying body for any amount of time is beyond me. The smell in the apartment building was enough to make me gag.

      Scent habituation- living around it constantly and long enough will produce the inability to smell that particular scent strongly or altogether. But yes, how they could deal with it long enough for habitualization to occur is the very question. Yikes. A coworker of mine has a son of whom bought his dream house in Arizona and rented it out in the meantime while he finished out his Air Force contract so they could move into themselves after the tenants moved out. The tenants had an elderly mother they were taking care of of which died in one of the bedrooms in the house and they let her dead body lay in the bed for 3 weeks before they did anything. The tenant claimed she didn't know what to do, so she did nothing. Needless to say it instantly was no longer their dream house and soon after sold it.

My buddies dad took care of his daughter her whole life but when he died last year she was 45 never worked once always lived with him at home she tried to convince her brother to leave his body in the basement so she could keep cashing his pension checks cause she had nothing! Of course he called the EMT immediately but somehow she got two more checks and cashed before the death certificate came thru like 6500$ now those places what their money back but she's gone and emptied his account 15k nobody's seen her since then we found out she hadn't been taken him to his doctors appointment for months and he had some kinda cancer that nobody in the family knew about she was his Caretaker so legally no doctors would tell the family any of his business he'd probably still be alive if she was keeping up with his appointments

    We had a man down the road from us die in his home. This is going back over 20 years ago. Neighbors began to smell the stench, us included. But we didn’t suspect it was an actual dead body of a human being. But then a few days later we found out it was. He was an alcoholic that you’d rarely see outside of his home, but I remember how horrifying and sad it was finding out that the smell was not a dead animal somewhere, but a dead man. He also lived on the other end of our street too, so it was really alarming how the smell trickled down the block. 😢

      Aww man. Sad. My parents had a rental property back when I was a baby. There was a liquor store behind the house acroos an ally. They were their for about 3mths when they started smelling soemthing dead. They thought it was under the house. Nothing. Then it got stronger over the weeks. They thought it was the a/c. They finally called someone. Cops peeked around the ally. Smelled really strong. They found the owner of the liquor store. He was retiring and had gone into the store to grab last minute belongings. He fell over a bottle and died. In a hallway area. Windows were tested. The a/c in hid building was in fan.. it was blowing the smell right into my parents a/c unit that was located right across his vents. They still say they can smell that smell. He was 64. No living family. Only a friend that he told goodbye to and that he would be back to visit in 1 mth or so. He was there 3 weeks. That's way no one wondered where he was. 😢

    That other family members were estranged is no surprise. Isolating the elder is one of the first things they do once they very first present a show of affection and socializing long enough to put people at ease. Then the isolation begins and it's hard to break because often the elder is so flattered by the attention the abuser gives them, that they defend the abuser. They even can become hostile to the concerned family because they are questioning the judgement by questioning the abuser, fear the abuser aka flatterer may leave them and then they'll end up in a "home", or alone, or they think the family is jealous or the ones being abusive because the abuser plays a victim card.
    Once well isolated they change their tune and become openly abusive and/ or neglectful.
    AN APS WORKER ONCE TOLD ME THAT WHEN ON A WELFARE CHECK THEY MUST SEE THE POTENTIAL VICTIM THEMSELVES TO CONFIRM THEY ARE ALIVE BECAUSE THIS IS NOT SO UNCOMMON. IT'S JUST NOT IN THE NEWS THAT MUCH.

      This is just an update on the case. It was originally reported on back in October of last year, when he was found. His son-in-law, who lived in the home, was the one to report it. As devastating as this is, I really hope it was just a case of his daughter not being able to come to terms with the fact he died. That’s what it seems like to me, as there was no foul play suspected, and it took the son-in-law so long to report it. He may have been slowly trying to help her, but it just became too much by last year.

      @SneakySalaXander ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@FeatherX Fact is, we don’t know. It could also be they collected checks because that’s the only way she could keep her father in the house. Social security being involved doesn’t inherently mean they did it with malicious intent. They have to get involved if the individual was collecting benefits. Be it they died at home or at the hospital. As far as it stands now, yes, they collected checks. But, assuming there was no foul play, that’s the only crime they committed, as it actually isn’t against the law to keep the deceased in the home in Kansas. The question that’ll be answered by social security is why they did it.

      My uncle is a retired general, he has no kids, he was like a second father to me. His long time girlfriend I had no clue until these last few years NEVER liked me, anyways 5 years ago he married her, which I totally got, supported and thought was amazing as they had been together for a long time, (prior 30 years they always had a odd relationship as they’re both career driven and independent so they broke up got back together, they both have their ways so others always found dating them difficult so I thought they matched 🤷🏼‍♀️) but when he called he said they privately got married and “it was the right thing to do” it was the oddest way I’ve been told about a marriage as I was also told now that he’s married I was taken off his will (which I NEVER EXPECTED TO BE ON NOR KNEW I EVER WAS AS WHILE I LOVE HIM DEARLY IM JUST HIS NIECE) well my uncle started to loose his memory (he doesn’t have dementia I don’t think) these last few years, also ALL our family has passed my parents died by the time I was 35 (I do have a husband, daughter, grandkids) but he was the only older family member I had left so I enjoyed our closeness, calls, he stopped visiting me, and now calling. I was calling him but I got the sense I was annoying them especially her as he’d make jokes then say she said hi and I could tell it was a joke because she hated me, they travel a lot always have but now retired they do so for fun he was close to where I live and never called to see me which my entire life that’s unheard of, he use to drive me nuts how much he use to visit or if in the next state he’d expect me or him to fly out. So after that I stopped calling and he hasn’t called me, I honestly don’t think he cares and I don’t want to bother him or push myself on him. It's obvious the house used to be a very nice one and yes, it fell into disrepair, but people were still living there. It's not as if there was a single person living alone (like me) - elderly (like me), and the neighbors would have then suspected something had happened if they didn't see me (nearly outside daily) and especially my front yard showed signs of neglect (I am one of those retirees who spends all her time landscaping). Apparently he made no provisions for a funeral, a will, his bank accounts, nothing. And he owns 2 buildings, one with tenants. My husband and his siblings have to go thru boxes and boxes and boxes of paperwork to see if they can find a will or anything. It is going to take months. It is going to take dumpsters. It is going to take a lawyer. What a mess! They have been asking him for a long time to get his affairs in order, and get rid of some stuff. My husband always helped him. The family is acting like they cared. You didn't hear from him or see him for 6-7 years. Didn't talk to him for any holidays or birthdays for 6 years. Clearly NEVER stopped by the "family" home for anything. The family already acted like he was dead. If I didn't hear from a family member or seen them for a few months I'm looking for them, especially after multiple years. Then the nieces say they thought something was wrong but had no problem keeping their mouth shut for 6 years. Now they act shocked and devastated he's dead. His family didn't care at all for him. I have no empathy for the family besides this man. Any of the family speaking to media is clearly looking for attention plain and simple.

We have a fun activity planned, business as usual." I couldn't fathom how people could live and behave like this, and then I got married....
