    “Smells and sounds I’d grown up with and known every year of my life until then had suddenly turned on me and acquired an inflection forever colored by the events of that summer.”
    -
    Spoilers for the film Call Me By Your Name.
    So, I read the novel this film is based on back in 2017 and after learning it was to be adapted into a movie, I waited nearly a year in anticipation for it. After finally seeing it in December, I had some mixed feelings about it. I found the film to be quietly captivating and visually mesmerizing, but lacking some of the more explicitly presented themes in the book. So much is said in its subtlety, but so much of that can also be lost on viewers-I think, at least-if they aren’t already familiar with the book.
    That being said, I don’t mean to imply that this film doesn’t stand as an outstanding achievement on its own, because it certainly does, but I just think that book adaptations are always tricky and anyone who’s read Call Me By Your Name can certainly understand why it might be a particularly difficult text to adapt.
    But one of the overarching themes in both the film and novel is the notion that for Elio, his desires, experiences, and the way he perceives the world around him have forever been shaped by the events of his summer with Oliver. Those few weeks had afforded them both so many new experiences but at the same time, made all Elio was already familiar with-the sights, sounds, tastes, and all the mundanities of every summer he’d ever experienced in that house, suddenly become new.
    With this rather long but lyrically sparse song choice, I tried to draw on some of these ideas. I’m not entirely confident about the final result (which seems to be the case with everything I upload of late) and I know that the first half is rather lethargic, but I think the film is this way as well.
    I did feel a bit weird leaving out the obligatory “call me by your name” scene, but it honestly just didn’t have a place in this vid and I don’t see this as being my last anyway.
    I finally want to thank briony (brionyx509) for helping me find a working HD link to this film.
    Okay, ramble over now! I do hope this video is enjoyable for some. Thank you if you made it to the end of this.

    My heart is broken since the first time I read CMBYN and ever since I watched the movie I felt shattered. I just feel so much for them, particularly for Elio and his emotional progress that I mostly don't watch any edits. I don't even dare myself to make a something out of it, maybe because I'm scared of creating a big failure. And maybe because I know that I will break down in tears or just sit in silence, entirely numbed by the wave of feelings I have for CMBYN. But as soon as I saw your video in my timeline I needed to see it. I couldn't resist. And as I thought - you didn't disappointed me and broke my heart for the third time. Don't worry it was worth it! I can't even describe how beautiful and yet how sad your video is. You are incredible and please don't ever give up your creativity because what you make of it is pure art and admirable. Thank you making this video.

      i'm ashamed to have taken so long to reply to this...what a remarkable comment. it's extremely gratifying to know this video resonated with you, and that you even watched it in the first place given what you say about the film's emotional impact stifling your ability to watch vids.
      upon uploading this i had conflicting (most negative) feelings towards this vid and now, coming back to your comment, after being on hiatus for several months due to my own stifling feelings of self-doubt, your words are all the more meaningful and significant. thank you so much.

    first of all: love this, bloody brilliant! you have a really good editor's eye. also, i agree with the caption - i think it's essential to read the book before you watch the film, because then when you watch it your experience will be so much richer. you will know everything thats going on in elios head in every scene (or i remembered anyway) and that brings so much more meaning to it. but at the same time, i wonder how i wouldve found it if i hadnt read the book first!!

    I amend my original comment, having come back to this edit several times.....its really...subtle genius. Upon first view I thought somethings were mistakenly conceptualized. I have to take that back, there's a complex depth here, that, (like CMBYN book and movie) is easy to over look in the glossy segments. So, thanks for making me return and return again and thanks for sharing!

    WOAH. Bella. This vid is so stunning. I'm so glad you decided to work with a theme that felt so important and immediate to you - about the novel and what it conveys about Elio's experience of /being/ in this world - and explored it throughout this vid. I love how skilfully your editing is able to convey the intimacy and sensuality and indulgence of the film - from the scenery to the colours to the sounds. Some thoughts:
    - The opening sequence for the first minute was just so beautiful, and god damn your use of the scene of Elio mournfully watching the train pull away cut me so deep. Why??????
    - Pls can we talk about how the restraint in your pacing really makes the build up towards the final act all the more powerful? It really allowed me to slow myself down and comprehend the beauty of the footage and the tenderness of these different moments.
    - I am very much in love with the sequence from 2:22 - 2:37 and all that it implies.
    - Let me just say that when you returned to the original shot from 0:46 at 2:46 to show the shift to darkness I knew you were about to GO OFF (I was legit like "oh shit what is she about to do to me????") and of course you did.
    - I have a lot of feelings about how similar our approaches to the film are. Like, watching through this and enjoying all of the different parallels and rhythms and symbols I'm like "YES! GOOD! YES!". Tom and Will ONLY.
    - The voiceover!! So perfect so poignant!!
    - The kissing montage though. So masterfully assembled.
    - I love that shot of Elio staring at billowy at 4:15. Your attention to detail is always so impressive.
    - That final "everything is new" at the end featuring That Final Shot when everything is no longer new - it is now past tense and Elio is v sad about it - very much hurt my feelings.
    I'm really sorry to read that you're not feeling very confident about this vid, because to me it's a really poignant, compelling and thoughtful exploration of both the novel and the film, and I think you should be very proud of it. It's very beautiful.

      @xLiesForALiar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you so much bb. this is an extremely delayed reply but i want you to know how much this comment has meant to me. my negative feelings about the video have (thankfully) very much subsided over time.
      with this film, there is so much said in the silence. and i think this song in particular just really called for a meditative environment so that's what i tried to emulate in the first half. i'm so glad to know it was rewarding for you.

  • @morthempstock9477
    @morthempstock9477 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    New favorite of yours. Made me very emotional. I really love the videos you make that take their time and aren't afraid of long pauses or off beat. And the speech of Elio's dad always makes me cry so thanks for including it

    • @morthempstock9477
      @morthempstock9477 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also I don't think I read the description the first time around but now I have and I completely agree with you. I feel a lot of important things were lost on people who haven't read the book because they weren't present in the movie, not even implied. The movie felt more like a collection of instants from the book. It was lovely, and the acting really made it special, but it was more "superficial" than the book. Plus the director didn't include the last part of the book because he wants to make a sequel and I felt cheated when I learned that.

    • @xLiesForALiar
      @xLiesForALiar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @xLiesForALiar
      @xLiesForALiar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i'm late (extremely so), but i'm glad to see we're in agreement. i think it partly has to do with the narrative format and writing style in the book. so much of elio's inner conflict is exercised through small behaviors and his constant inner evaluation that i think it was just difficult to portray without resorting to first-person narration.
      i mostly just wish the role of envy was explored more in the film. also, the nosebleed scene was a bit of a disappointment, it was treated with far more significance in the novel.
      i have mixed feelings about the changed ending but i can understand why it felt that way for you.

    Omg... I’ve been waiting for you to do this movie. I shouldn’t expect anything less at this point it but everytime I watch an edit of yours I’m still rendered speechless by it. From the beginning where Elio hearing the bell sends him on a memory filled fantasy of the past. The silence in the first half that indicated someone/something lost, how images from the peach to the bed to Oliver linked to one another and finally the rush of passion that was Oliver and elio’s relationship and finally the scene of Elio sitting at the fire that killed me all over again. Ugh, Bella truly an auteur for fan edits.

    ok im back and here for a proper comment now
    So the way you build up the 'scene' or 'atmosphere' i guess is so breathtaking (literally i was holding my breath), the way you hold and linger on shots to establish the atmosphere of your video (and just their story). That shot of him with the train pulling away... uhhh no thanks
    I love those parallel shots of Oliver just being in the periphery of Elio, noticeable only by someone who is noticing him (which elio does ofc)
    all the water shots yes such a strong theme in this film
    Damn Elio looking at the peach and how you have that shot of Oliver drinking the juice and just the connotations of that, him thinking of him obviously in those really intense intimate moments, just wow
    Ok and I love how you have the fist shot with the daylight coming in on the shutters and then the shot later with the daylight fading and the music picking up and that switch in the mood of the video, going from mysterious and vague to more focused and intense (just like their relationship is more focused and intense at night) and all those little tiny shots of the things that Elio notices about oliver and just how much he takes in about him (all those intercut shots of Elio and the peach in between is such an excellent use of that scene I am shook)
    That cut at 3:20 with him moving away from oliver to him moving towards him is wow
    and then, then, that sequence, opening up with the voiceover, is so intense and moving i truly feel like im intruding on them, the way you exquisitely build up to this sequence makes it feel even more intense and private. The lyrics paired with the scenes really got me honestly bella. I love how you used those shots of them being playful and so comfortable with each other because those were some of my favourite moments from the movie and showed just how much they trusted and cared about each other adn were themselves the most with one another.
    Oh and the ending??? With him at the fireplace and the winter scenery? showing how short their love was and how it ended just like the seasons end? Absolutely breathtaking. That truly was some of the best acting i saw last year and it was the best way to end this video (i love how you did the credits just like in the movie as well)
    Im so sorry it took me so long to properly comment on this masterpiece but it's because it deserved time and attention that i havent had for a while but this is, as always, a work of art form you. you not only captured their love so wonderfully but also the atmosphere of the movie perfectly (which only enhanced their story for me). Just sublime bella!

    This was weird. Not Bad weird at all but the feeling the song and they way you put it together forced on me. It felt like a funeral, like I was saying goodbye to something I never had

    The Dad's soliloquy engaged a MASSIVE thinking error. We get new bodies every time we do not achieve that which we promised that we would in a lifetime. Even more profound is that we ARE NOT, NOT, NOT our BODIES! That speech made an attempt but fell short considerable when compared to a truth that is far more ancient than most realize. The part about facing the pain was somewhat authentic but only to a point. We must realize what we actually are.

    I've read the book and watched the film... I love film so much more then a book. It's good that they didn't put everything in the film, it would deprive the film of this sensitivity and intimacy.
    I've read Find Me, a novel... and it's disintegrated me completely... I can't wait for CMBYN 2

      Interesting. I had largely the opposite experience with the film and book. I haven't read Find Me yet but I'm looking forward to it.

    Very different from other video montages. Calls for a meditative environment. It made me recall the South Carolina low country, which is on the same latitude as Italy.

      thank you! and probably not, tbh, i'm sorry! but i certainly encourage you to download video editing software and give it a shot yourself if it's something you really want to do. there are tons of tutorials on YT for video editing and how to download the software (Sony Vegas is what's used most heavily in the vidding community and it's pretty user friendly; Adobe Premiere is great as well).

    Okay, okay. Let me try and figure my thoughts out. Where do I begin?
    I want to just start off by saying how generally I've been very apprehensive about this film - I'd read the book a couple of months back (after the movie came out) and didn't really like it; i went on to read a bunch of movie reviews (without having seen the film uhhum) so there were just a bunch of opinions in my head (still are) that weren't really mine, if that makes sense? While, naturally this film is visually stunning (yes, I've seen way too many edits) - I do think there are certain elements of this film / book that can be seen as fairly problematic. But, all that being said, I don't think any edit has made me want to watch the movie more than this one. So that's what I'm going to do (and hopefully not procrastinate writing another comment).
    But more from an objective point of view, THIS WAS INCREDIBLE. There really isn't a better way to say it. You talk of how you see the first part as being a bit slow but I think that's what highlights the second part and makes it even more special. I loved how it picked up and the sort of intensity of the scenes from the second half - which countered the pace of the first half. I think this was such a perfectly minimal edit (it's so so so perfect). I think it's also brilliant how well you've worked with the song - given its lack of lyrics, the visuals sort of just speak for themselves (which really just speaks for your talent). It is definitely one of my favourites from you - and this is me saying so without having watched the film.

      yet another wonderful comment from you and i must apologize for the extremely delayed reply...i went on a bit of a spontaneous hiatus from YT that i'm just now coming out of...trying to catch up on all i've missed!
      i'd be curious to learn what you thought was problematic about the book. i certainly appreciate your candidness though, and if anything, it makes it even more gratifying to know you enjoyed this vid despite your apprehension about the source material.
      i had a lot of uneasy feelings about this vid when i first uploaded - many of which have (thankfully) subsided over time - but it's comments like these that also make me realize a lot of that uneasiness grew out of a lack of trust that people would understand my intentions.
      so it gives me great joy to know that this video has resonated with you (despite not having seen the film itself) and that the aspects of it that made me question its success you enjoyed so vehemently. it's always a pleasure to read your feedback; you write with such depth of understanding and insight and what you have to say is always extremely rewarding for me as a creative. thank you friend

    How do you get film clips to edit? Where do you get them/download them?

    • @heartsaracing8273
      @heartsaracing8273 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure how/where Bella gets her clips, but to be so bold as to answer your main question.....there's software (some requires you buy the software and others are free to use) which allow you to capture video from your computer. You can do a google for "best video capture software" and get multiple choices. Most are easy to use, too. Hope this helps!
