    4 white men trading in guns, opium, and flesh. Fowler is guns, Violet was opium, either Routely, or Skaffington will be flesh, and the other will be peddling the West's 4th export: Christianity. And I want him to be the love-your-neighbor type, not the hellfire-and-damnation type, because I want to see Mizu deal with the wrench in her revenge quest when one of these men doesn't turn out to be despicable.

    What makes Fowler such a great villain in this show is his crimes and cruelties are everywhere; he is the most open about it and what he is amidst all the more "socially acceptable" examples of what makes him horrible.
    - Fowler kills his own kids? Ringo's dad left him to die in the forest for being born disabled and Mizu's maid abandoned her when the money ran out.
    - Fowler's a sexual sadist and pervert? Akemi's father was going to force her to marry an old lord, or force her to be his whore. As Madame Kaji put it, "If you killed every man I've met who couldn't come til someone bled, you'd wear your blade to a stump."
    - Fowler's emotionally cruel? Lady Itoh served Akemi her own pet bird for dessert (after previous courses of rabbit liver in horse jizz and chilled fox brains with fetal pig blood).
    - Fowler's willing to murder many people to achieve his goals? Fowler's co-conspirators were planning to kill the shogun and thousands more (Fowler even mocks the for being polite while plotting it) and Lady Itoh ordered her son to leave the lords to burn to death in the tunnels to save face.
    - Fowler's openly racist? 99% of the people Mizu met insulted her for being mixed-race (Taigen tried to murder her for it when they were kids) and everyone who met Fowler had something negative to say about him being white.
    Fowler's works so well because he knows, as a foreigner, he can't hide his actions behind pseudo-logical rationalizing, social etiquette, or his race.

    • @kjj26k
      @kjj26k 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      Add to that Fowler has learned through traumatic experience that Might Makes Right and *that is IT.*
      Anything else is a waste of breath better spent destroying obstacles, so only talk when you've already won and by then the only thing left to say is gloating.

    • @madeofwax92
      @madeofwax92 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I mean Fowler fathered a bunch of bastards and then killed them and their mothers. Yes, he is painted as evil partially because he is taking power, but his character is much more evil than any of the examples you've mentioned. The fact that he is trying to take power is the least of his issues - that's just imperialism, which can be levied equally against any of the "good guys" in power in this show.

    13:51. “These guys have never seen a gun”. This is actually one of the historical liberties taken by this show. In reality, firearms were already well known to Japanese armed forces as far back as the 13th century, when the first primitive hand cannons (teppo) were brought to Japan from China by the Mongols (who had established the Yuan dynasty in that country). And by the 16th century- about 100 years before the Edo period (in which this story is set), firearms adapted from Portuguese matchlocks, known as tanegashima, began to see widespread use.
    Contrary to popular portrayals in Western media, it was guns and polearms- not swords or bows- that served as the main weapons of samurai during the Sengoku period. The katana was more of a sidearm and symbolic weapon of the samurai caste, rather than a practical one. Although firearm usage waned during the isolationist Edo period, there were still 200+ gunsmiths active in Japan. The notion that the shogunate at this time would not have access to its own guns is unlikely. But for the sake of this story, it’s an acceptable departure from history (that much of the show’s audience would probably not even notice).

    • @nullakjg767
      @nullakjg767 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it was portugal that brought guns to japan en masse in the 1500s, which is why the warring states era ended so shortly after. guns brought order to japan. western media loves to portray guns as doing the opposite.

    • @madeofwax92
      @madeofwax92 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      tbf, we literally saw a gun casually brandished at a soup shop in episode 1. the idea that the military wouldn't be aware of guns - even in the show - is silly. Although being aware that they exist and understanding how asymmetric the fight against them would be is another thing.

      I would have been okay with taking the historical liberty or being out-gunned if the lack of tactics and ignorance/ineptitude wasn't so complete. A series this good at subtlety could have found a better way to show Fowler's dominance/cruelty without rendering an entire shogunate feckless.

    • @udon6031

      It makes me worried about what other liberties the show will take. The way Fowler talked about Britain made it sound like it was some big colonizing power, which at that point in history it wasn't. He said the British were the best at murder, but that title definitely would go to the Spanish in that period. I worry when Mizu reaches Britain she'll see an industrial revolution happening a couple hundred years early.

    • @docavar5698
      @docavar5698 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And you know what it might be a slightly different universe here. Fowler introduced guns pretty late in Japan and it’s in combination with the past shoguns keeping the borders pretty tight to imply they HAVENT made ties with China if the Mongols didn’t go through. Just how different this world in the show is from ours? 🤔

      My only worry for Mizu with keeping Fowler alive is now that he knows Mizu is a woman. He's gonna be a bit...(g)rapey... because the way he said "little miss" and the way he keeps saying she has pretty eyes...gives me major creep vibes...and before anyone says anything, Ik Mizu probably wouldn't let that happen but...strong women can be taken advantage of. Doesn't matter, Mizu barely made it out the first time with Fowler.

    The only thing I disliked about this was that it acted as if Japanese people had never seen guns. This takes place in the 1650s and the Portugese had arrived in Japan in the 1540s. It took the Japanese less than a year to reverse engineer and produce their own guns (tanegashima guns) and Samurai, including the Tokugawa (leaders of the 'edo' shogunate) used guns extensively throughout the 1500s and early 1600s. So them only fighting with swords and charging guns with swords when they had been aware of European style guns and integrated them into their own military culture is strange

    My one thought as this season ends is... Where's Taigan? We see Akemi reunite w her husband and we learn her father lives. Ringo goes back to sword father and Mizu is obviously on a boat...
    But, where is Taigan? I kind of hope he is secretly following her, somehow, like in ep 2. It would be wild if he suddenly shows up in London. But I'd also be ok if he goes on his own journey, remaining Japan. You never know where this story will take us and and I love it for that!

    The British East India Company existed by this point, but it's 100 years before they conquered India. Blue Eye Samurai DOES take place during the beginning of the Buccaneer Era of Caribbean piracy, and shortly after the English Civil Wars. At this point, the British Empire wasn't the largest in the world yet, it had serious competition from the Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, and even the French

    29:45 technically the English have started establishing some trade routes with counties like India, China. Also trade posts in the Middle East especially around the Mediterranean Sea that is heavy spot for ships to dock, trade goods with merchants from there or transfer to next boat heading further west past Spain to coasts of France, Italy and of course England.
    Which I hope s2 isn’t just instantly to her arriving in England. S2 is her journey across different lands and know the cultures, how ppl lived, pick up some skills and fighting styles. Same time s2 jumps to akemi, taigen and Ringo what they are doing. S3 is when she finally arrives and based on what she learned figure out how to traverse London and find her targets.

      Had to look it up. Travel time various based on land/sea travel and where you travel trough. Then depending on seasons be rough sea travel, storms, heat on land or cold. Then depending on region and governance/monarchy laws that can cause delays.
      So ppl on Reddit say possibly earliest is 8 months. Latest could take near 2 years from Japan to England And that’s one way.
      Knowing Fowler being a merchant he may have connections through various countries during his trip from England to Japan and maintain contact via sending letters back and fourth. So he may convince/twist Mizu to work with him depending on area they in.

    The first person that Mizu killed ppl looked back, the person looks like Mizu but after analyzing it the first white person she killed might have been female but dress to look like a man like Mizu.
    Mizu parents might be reversed, her mother is white, her father maybe Japanese that’s a trader/businessmen. At the time some Japanese merchants did go to England, live and spoke their language with rarely some were born and raised there. Era wise this is possible when the time English presence was in Japan before they closed them off. It checks out with what Fowler said to her on you have his eyes. Ppl at first think it’s the blue eyes, no it’s the shape ane fowler knows him well being business partners and that’s how they first came to Japan. Plus again Fowler mentioning the maid was paid, so that’s have to be a good amount of money to be sent to convince the maid to raise and keep Mizu hidden.
    What made this show popular is the writing and dialogue. Many moments in their discussion plays a hint or huge role down the road, this includes Fowler words.

      @@shaskusmas again depending on how long england/japan traded chances is he was born in england even through japanese if his father was a trader. or most likely sake to make it eaasier for english ppl to say his name he gave himself an english name.
      either way based on how they did story and scenes in s1 i can see they gonna really twist up and make the encounter shocking on mizu meeting her father and/or learn of her mother.

    Oh, god, that castle siege was so stupid... And why TF Fawler just ran away after he beaten two main characters? It was a fantastic show for about like four episodes but seriously it's getting dummer and dummer with every new episode =\

    I think Mizu's mother is white! The daughter one of the guys living in London. Fowler knew about her, meaning she has special importance, and her mom may still be alive in London! This show is very feminist, so would make sense.

      I was thinking her mother was mixed, because it would explain the blue eyes while also retaining Japanese features.

      Fowler sad “don’t you want to know who killed your mother” so no, her mother was Japanese and is dead.

    I like the theory that Mizu wasn’t born of a white man, but a white woman. We still don’t know who were the men who were sent to kill her when she was a baby. What if she has a white mother & the mother has a connection to one of the men, maybe a brother?
