I like the German translation even more because it says „Will u marry me? Because I’d like to get to know you.” I guess it’s just different wording but I feel it makes a lot more sense because outside from work they both didn’t knew each other at all so it’s really sweet to phrase it like that

Many of us enjoy watching this movie, and many other romcom movies, because we watched it in our teens and early twenties, when romcoms were at their peak. At that time, we didn't really care about the plot or try to keep up with the story, we simply just loved to see the main characters fall in love.
37:00 The character of the Ex is there to make her feel insecure, not to make her jealous. Because she seems like such a sweet, friendly person compared to her bossy self
finally someone! this movie has been tormenting me for years because it’s my best friend’s comfort movie and i can’t say no to them. always have to bite my tongue to not upset them with my trash-talking. but now i can just come back to this and nod along, crying tears of relief. thank you!
36:06 "Ryan's character just feels so empty" is the same energy in media that have female characters who only exist to pine over a male chatacter. This movie is still a guilty pleasure, though. That scene in the woods between Sandra Bullock and Betty White lives rent free in my head. 😅
Inaccurate though lol The only people in that do that are elderly. Especially in summer if you're up north it doesn't get dark till very late or not at all
She didn't have to open her eyes to show the boat moment was about her warming up to him imo. Looking at him would have been the obvious move, but also difficult and maybe even awkward given his proximity. But her expression when her eyes were closed conveyed her anxiety, then the release of her tension while in his arms. I personally liked that choice.
ooh I feel like if they honed in more on that subtle physical relaxation it would've helped the scene. I agree, showing emotion through her eyes may have been the obvious choice (classic lol) but if they really played around with the camera and focusing on the body language, it would've helped deepen the moment. Also I have not watched this movie so I'm spitballing solely based on this video hehe
@daniifantom5537 yeah maybe there was a better way to focus the camera work there. I've seen the movie and I agree the romance was a bit choppy that it could have felt rushed, but I did appreciate Sandy's subtle performance.
i was briefly distracted from my screen when that bit came on and got so irrationally scared when seeing it out of the corner of my eye lmao I’m so dumb
It is subtle romance, seeing each other in new contexts. Her seeing him w his family, him seeing her w his family. It’s definitely there, there’s warmth that grows. I also just love this movie
I like how subtle it is, and that they each have own moments to catch feelings. It feels as realistic as can be for such a situation. Wouldn't fit her personally to suddenly stumble over words an they have standard cheesy montage and boop suddenly inlove and happy as a Disney Princess at end of their happy ending
in theory, yeah. but they didn't actually execute any of it well. it could have been this and been really good and been _so much better_. but they really dropped the ball on the whole concept. the concept is not bad at all, they just did not deliver the concept well at all. it's disappointing because it could have been good with what it was but it just wasn't. it did not click. people like what they project it to be. but it's unlikable because it's not what people project it to be. it's just a missed opportunity.
@@3elsi i think it's just that there are some real trash romcoms out there. like... this movie may be a missed opportunity but i have definitely seen FAR worse
Dylan was fed up with this movie before it even started 😂. I personally really like this movie. Margaret is not "mean" she is just strict because of her job (and personal life). She is a woman being the head of a big company. She got to be strict or else she wouldn't be taken seriously. She is just sassy and direct. I personally like that because most romcoms have a female lead with the most plain personality, or they're the stereotypes of the sweet, quirky, and "likable" girl. And if you watch the movie, her character development is great, maybe too fast, but i don't really mind. But i agree on the fact that Ryan's had no story, and their relationship didn't show growth, they only showed a good comedy dynamic. These types of movies were corny but so good. It's simple but still enjoyable to watch. I miss the 2000's-2010's era of movies.
Dylan was complaining about Ryan's character not being delved into and the ex being useless but the point of that scene in the deck was to show that as much as he was in love with Gertrude, he gave that up to move to NY because he wanted that dream more, to build a career on his own outside of his family's businesses. He left a beautiful family behind because he had a dream, which Margaret can obviously relate to
Yeah, and in the scene where Margaret was vulnerable, she was doing it to understand what was going on between Andrew and his dad, so it was for her to gain something, but he ended up making her laugh as well. Which would mean a lot if you're as lonely as Margaret.
I’ve been saving this video to watch it when I really need to feel better. Now I’m home, feeling broken hearted and I’m glad I can watch Dylan just being himself. Thank you for making me laugh when I feel like I can’t 😊
the way Dylan started losing it towards the end of the movie LOL like "you don't love her. She doesn't love him! This isn't love!" yeah, so many plot holes Dylan but we love good rom coms with giant plot holes. We are a crazy society
I think it’s reasonable to assume it’s lower cost of living bc it’s rural and verryyyy red, but it’s like the fourth most expensive state in terms of housing and healthcare 😅
What, it's Canada? I thought she was supposed to be Latino & the movie was at least showing the importance of the dreamer program. Even betty White can't save this. If this ends w/ some sexist BS where she replaced job with marriage ....smh
@@willadafanderson6714 she canadian and its non of the rest of that crap you put down. she has a job visa and she violated it by leaving the country before everything was finalized.
@@willadafanderson6714given the fact that Sandra is not a Latina woman that would be a little strange. Also no, she didn’t give up her job neither of them did 💀
I think this movie is loved so much, is because it's cozy, light, and funny. It's not bad, it's not great, but it's easy to watch and memorable. The cast and premise carry this movie pretty heavily too.
they actually AREN'T in love at the end and that's why this movie is so great! Ryan specifically says he wants to marry Sandra in order to date her. I think Dylan is so confused because romcoms are supposed to end in True Love. This movie ended with "we really like each other and its probably love but we have to get married first in order to stay together and give our relationship a chance" And it's breaking Dylans man brain lol Edit: you can love someone without being IN love! Thanks for coming to my Ted talk
You can love someone and still only be dating them lol. But in this movie, he must love Sandra in order to decide to marry her at all after she let him off the hook & told the immigration investigator.
The point of the ex is to further showcase the life that Ryan’s character could’ve had if he stayed, but he chose to go to New York anyways. It’s mainly for Sandra’s character to see all that he gave up to work for her which adds to her guilt and the point that they really don’t do much for Ryan’s character development
@@xJentaa yeah I agree. I like the way Ryan’s character says “marry me, because I’d like to date you” at the end because I don’t think they’re in love right away but could get there
@@oliviamayer24601 ruined then by what he says immediately _before_ the 'date you' line: "it suddenly dawned on me that *the woman I love* is about to be kicked out of the country"
I feel like Dylan answered some of his questions and criticisms at the end. The point of the manuscript is that it is initially supposed to be a throwaway comment that she dismisses. The fact that he doesn't mention it but she brings it up at the end is an example of her listening to him and learning about him throughout the years the same way he knew small details about her. And we do learn things about his character, like that he is ambitious just like her and left his family and high school sweetheart to pursue this publishing dream in NYC. Also, I think the movie is better because she doesn't have a dramatic transformation. The "subtle romance" is him loving her because he finally understands her and why she acts the way she does after three years. People also really love this movie for the comedy like the nude scenes, strip show and the Betty White scene in the woods which were all moments Dylan didn't' find funny. The plot is thin but this is still a feel-good movie that I love to rewatch.
@@mmcreads Nah, it’s not weird. He’s watching this movie for the first time and with 2024 eyes. There’s so much in this movie that would not fly now. The guy she fires being one of the few POCs in the office-that actually would be fine and still holds up well because there’s no racial stereotyping about that role. Also the character deserved to be fired. However, it’s then followed by the immigration office and the plane scenes. Where Margaret puts all her worst Karen/entitled white woman ways on full display-budging in front of a line of visible minorities. Thinking she can get away with defrauding the government. Her racist comment about “gardeners and delivery boys” would never have made the cut. Certainly, not as a line from a protagonist. Plus the Oscar cameo and Betty White’s character are racial caricatures with the latter being especially egregious with the cultural appropriation
@@checksanity so per your view, 2024 requires an injection of race into everything. The main character acts entitled and obnoxious because she's the boss and believes she must display authority to be taken seriously. It's silly and misguided and a cue to the audience on how to assess the character. Your attempt to make it about her race says more about you than anything said in the film. And no one was harmed or exploited by seeing an old lady dance in a comical manner in the woods. Calling that appropriation is just absurd. Really, this film is not that deep; some things are just supposed to be funny.
@@checksanitythere are native tribes/communities that still live in Alaska. And Betty’s character doesn’t show any racism or appropriation throughout the movie, except for that moment in the woods. So that probably means that Betty, being as old as she is in this movie’s storyline, probably had native friends or learned the culture while living in Alaska? Especially considering Betty’s character was taking it seriously… believing “giving thanks” was necessary for Sandra’s character to do in the first place at all. Or that the baby blanket legit had magic power (notice the patterns on the blanket? They look some sort of tribal). Also, everything else you said, race was literally (for once) not a thing in this movie like at all. Being black myself and picking up on subtle racism in early 2000s movies… this wasn’t one of those movies. The only time where that’s in the movie is very obviously pointed out in the immigration office when Sandra’s character obviously thinks she’s more important to cut the line of POCs and calls them gardeners. But Sandra’s character fits as a conservative/republican that isn’t inherently racist, but is very blind/or willingly obtuse about racial issues.
I watched this movie on a plane recently and my thought coming out of it was "boy this relationship is not convincing in the slightest" - it happened too quickly and too much of the movie was spent with them hating each other. Glad you seem to agree on that front. My mom loves this movie and I genuinely don't understand what she sees in it.
He looks better in darker colors. It just brings out the natural highlights in his hair. I have a similar hair color to him and when I wear darker shirts, i like myself so much better lmao.
thats what i was thinkinf when he said he cant stand that actress who plays the hometown love interest/former gf, and her character is particularly grating in 27 dresses lmao
As much as I love this movie, if Dylan was going to do a Ryan Reynolds movie, I feel like “Definitely, Maybe” would’ve been better. One of my favorites, but also a bit more of a “serious” role from him.
This movie is definitely not perfect, but it just really hits that romcom spot for me. I think it's quite subtle and understated with the romantic moments, having smaller glances, and body language changes between them, all the while feeding into the very specific trope of one character (usually the MC), who doesn't have a family (or their family sucks), falling in love with their love interest's family, and seeing them in a whole new light. And along the way, the LI sees the MC being vulnerable, and open about their pain for the first time. I just eat it up 😅 Plus, I just found the comedy elements to be SO good. I love the fights with the dog, Sandra, and Betty in the forest, and the weird strip scene 😂😂
Yeah! I feel like it manages to turn a fairly cliched plot into quite a subtle romance, and elevated with the comedic gold of the Sandra and Ryan duo, it's just one of my favourite childhood romcoms~ also Betty White is a treasure, and that forest scene always gets me fr
If I were to describe this movie, it'd probably be "lukewarm" or "I like it but it feels hollow." I enjoy the premise, but Dylan's right about the chemistry not being high enough. They have nice chemistry in terms of not being afraid to sass each other, but there wasn't really a smooth transition from that to romance.
the premise is decent but the script is awful and the execution is awful. disappointing. could have been nice but they completely flubbed it and it's just nothing
i'm autistic, and when I was 12 years old this movie was my favorite. I would watch at least 5 times a day and it continued for 6 months, but its been 12 years since i've last watched it and its so nice to finally watch it again and actually understand the content in it
I loved this movie. Then i rewatched it and it felt like he only liked her for her body, not for her... This had a lot of potential tbh but oh well... still iconic. Loved your commentary Dylan!
I'm realizing that the insane popularity of kdramas in recent years, is coz they are all romcoms and Hollywood doesn't make romcoms anymore but everybody loves romcoms 😅
After watching kdramas, the romance in hollywood movies feels so lackluster. Like in kdrama you see the subtle facial expressions, hands brushing, lingering eye contacts etc. But in western movies, they just kiss and now they're in love 😂 like in this movie I felt no chemistry between the couple.
Kdramas know what they're doing. A season so they can take a bit of time developing the relationship, but just a season, so the story has to progress toward its end.
@@Axterix13 kdramas definitely benefit from having a limited run of 1 season. So they have to complete the story unlike series that go on and on with no end in sight.
Him not realizing that Alaska is one of the most expensive states to live in is so funny to me😂 milk is like $9 a gallon on average. It cost more to live in Alaska than it did for us to live on Oahu
As someone who has lived in Alaska, on the East Coast, the Midwest, AND the West Coast, Alaska money is more like west coast money. It's expensive up there, and very hard to keep a footing because of import/shipping costs. So, building an empire in Alaska is actually pretty hard!
Dylan so badly wanted them to fall head over heels in love in 3 days when I felt like the writers were trying to be somewhat realistic by having him say “marry me because I want to date you” you know to see if this could be love cause it’s only been 3 damn days lol
Right?! He wants some epic romantic saga in a weekend when the movie is more about self discovery thru vulnerability -and it happens to lead to a budding romance. IMO anyway 🤷♀️
except for the fact that all the characters _do_ say that they're in love now. ryan literally says the woman I love before the date you line. dylan's saying if you're going to have them suddenly be in love, actually, you know, have that be true? and if you're not having them be in love yet...don't have the movie say they're in love now. because it did. he didn't want them to fall head over heels in 3 days. he wanted it to actually make sense if the movie was going to say that they did!
39:10 The fact she didn't look at him on the boat *is* showing us how she warmed up to him. She's letting go, letting him lead bc she feels safe with him and she trusts him. Imo that was how it was intended

I think that's why it's a great movie. It's not a generic rom-com with all the tropes.
it could have been that if they actually put some emotion into the looks towards each other and that first kiss, but that didnt happen
in theory, yeah. but they didn't actually execute any of it well. it could have been this and been really good and been _so much better_. but they really dropped the ball on the whole concept. the concept is not bad at all, they just did not deliver the concept well at all. it's disappointing because it could have been good with what it was but it just wasn't. it did not click.
people like what they project it to be. but it's unlikable because it's not what people project it to be. it's just a missed opportunity.
You can be strict without insulting people and ignoring them

Someone's gotta pin that comment.

they actually AREN'T in love at the end and that's why this movie is so great! Ryan specifically says he wants to marry Sandra in order to date her.
Yeah he seemed to miss a lot of the subtlety in this movie. It was also a tad weird how much he hated Margaret beginning to end 😬

What is a kdrama?
@@DiegoGonzalez-ic3si Korean Dramas, they're usually just one season long.
I'm genuinely so EXCITED for all the future movies he's picked out for commentary and especially the rom coms!!!
Dylan, please, just let the romance fool you!!! It doesn't need to be accurate or anything but funny and lovely AND IT IIISSSS
The look of pure disdain when Ryan starts confessing is absolute gold
“He will be not only harried but married” I died 😂😂😂
He is making some good points. Falling in love doesn't make her less racist and judgmental.
“ I love DIS- COUNT me in!” Bro 😂😂😂 I laughed so hard
"Does it matter?No"
"Am I gonna complain? Yes"
It's not a movie commentary without Dylan rooting for death
20:17 “uhhhhh.. what are we doing?” he asks before a serious tragedy. and rightfully so.
No he's saying they don't even like oe grow to like each other which they dont
@@thepigeon9230they do… but it’s more because Sandra allows herself to loosen up around his family and realizes she likes a lot of things about him.
39:10 The fact she didn't look at him on the boat *is* showing us how she warmed up to him. She's letting go, letting him lead bc she feels safe with him and she trusts him. Imo that was how it was intended
