  • The Classic Sony ICF-2010 Shortwave Portable Radio is taken out for a Daytime visit on the AM Broadcast band. The radio is very sensitive on all the bands, and it does not disappoint :) The Cost of Admission has lowered, and there are some great deals for a Classic Sony such as this.
The Terk Advantage Passive Loop was at the ready, and did an Excellent job Helping pull in those Distant Stations.

Overall, the radio is worth every penny on the secondary market. I'm actually thinking of trying to find a second one, it is that good.

I love when old radios creak like wooden floors. Cheers Todder

Bought mine new from Fry's in Dallas Texas, still looks brand new. Also have the 7600GR too.

You can tell a radio is from the 1980s if it says "Quartz Clock" on the digital clock display! 😀
What's amazing is that Todd's ICF-2010 has stood the test of time. Most liquid crystal displays go bad over the decades - they stain, darken and turn brown with age.
It would be really great if Sony agrees to license the manufacture of their old radios to Tecsun, just like Grundig did with Eton. 📻🤔

Sony ICF-2010 is indeed, a great SW radio ever built. Love it so much.

Sony! The tuning is interesting. It doesn't do theremin noises like an analog, but it also doesn't fully mute and "chuff" like modern digital stuff.

To this very day that might just be the best portable shortwave radio ever built.

Try using the synchronous detection when listening with the radio on the AM band. Use the feature on my Sony ICF 7600GR. Helps with adjacent strong stations to null them out to recieve weak ones.

Nice to see a video on this classic radio, thanks! A friend of mine has one that looked in a perfectly mint condition. He wanted to give it to me, but the radio is very sick. Doesn't turn on most of the time, sometimes does... a bit: some very weak noise from the speaker but no sign of life at all on its display.
    All buttons inoperative.
It'd probably need a lof of work but I've been unable to find someone to fix it. Pity, really. Would have loved it I'm sure.
It's my second bad experience with a classic Sony radio. I had bought an ICF-7600 which turned out to be completely deaf on FM and somewhat working on SW with a very, very low audio. Again, couldn't find anyone to fix it. It's taking dust in a drawer now... Bad luck with Sony.

The programming on 750 WNDZ in Portage, Indiana is not totally religious. If you listen later in the day the programming is brokered as the station sells the airtime on the station.

Great video. I own the same radio, be it the type number is ICF-2001D. Exactly the same radio by the way. This probably is the best consumer portable radio ever made. The only downsides definately are the battery compartment (contact issues) and, as they are all old now, the circuit boards that can suffer from corrosion partly due to outgassing of poor quality batteries or leaky ones that were left in the radio. The battery gasses eat away the printed circuits. And maybe the radio only has two bandwidth filters but I never found this a real problem. As for AM, it shines there too. As a matter of fact, it even outperforms the famous GE Superadio series, all variants if it comes to pulling in real difficult signals and selectivity. But the radios have their own purposes, the GE series are ultimate daytime AM band receivers, this Sony on the other hand has all bells and whistles so it shines day or night. All in a self contained package. Speaking of the packige it comes in, be aware that the case is made of medium grade ABS that has a tendency to get brittle over time. By now all units suffer from this so be careful to store the radio well protected in e.g. an unused laptop bag. On the go this is definitely a must. If the unit is accidentally dropped, it will suffer irreparable damage. This quality is no longer made, certainly not in a portable package. For example ALL Tecsuns are absolutely no match for this radio if it comes to pure pulling power on AM. Even with only two bandwidth positions. By the way, the scale light is very dim. It can be replaced with a brighter one but only if you know your way around in this product. If not, do not even reach out for the screwdriver, you WILL mess things up. Mine has been fully restored (done by Rod). I sent it out to the USA to get the job done. Greetings from Hekelingen, The Netherlands. Bye, Willem.

I had this open once to trouble shoot and found a faulty ribbon cable. It has restored traces, and I had to adjust the fit on the connection. It was not a fun experience.

@@todderbert I know. It is all very cramped and before you know it something gets damaged along the process. What I noticed in your unit, is that the sensitivity doesn’t change when tuning past 1620kHz. It should. From 1620 (1621) the ferrite bar is no longer used. This might be due to a blown transistor that is very easy to replace as it sits on the small connector board on the left side of the radio. Lots of info on that on the web.
