  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask just got added to the Nintendo Switch Online service, but we couldn't just review one without the other, so we had to go all the way back to 1998 and play through Ocarina of Time again.
    It's been over 2 decades since the game came out. How does it hold up? Is it still fun? And is it worth your time after all this time?
    The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[a] is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was released in Japan and North America in November 1998, and in PAL regions the following month. Ocarina of Time is the fifth game in The Legend of Zelda series, and the first with 3D graphics.
    It was developed by Nintendo EAD, led by five directors including Eiji Aonuma and Yoshiaki Koizumi, produced by series co-creator Shigeru Miyamoto, and written by Kensuke Tanabe. Veteran Zelda series composer Koji Kondo created the musical score. The player controls Link in the fantasy land of Hyrule on a quest to stop the evil king Ganondorf, by traveling through time and navigating dungeons and an overworld. The game introduced features such as a target-lock system and context-sensitive buttons that have since become common in 3D adventure games. The player must learn to play numerous songs on an ocarina to progress.
    Ocarina of Time received widespread acclaim from critics and consumers and won several awards and accolades, who praised its visuals, sound, gameplay, soundtrack, and writing. It has been ranked by numerous publications as the greatest video game of all time, and is the highest-rated game of all time on the review aggregator Metacritic. It was commercially successful, with more than seven million copies sold worldwide. In the United States, it received more than three times more pre-orders than any other video game at the time, and was the best-selling game of 1998 in the country.
    A direct sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, was released in 2000. In the early 2000s, Ocarina of Time was re-released as part of The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition promotional disc for the GameCube and for the iQue Player in China. An enhanced version of the game for the Nintendo 3DS, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, was released in 2011. Both versions feature Master Quest, an alternative version of the game including new puzzles and increased difficulty.

    I disagree with your analysis on the Z-targeting system. Remember that back at the time the N64 joystick had only one stick, so it was technically impossible to play around with the camera as we do today with the new controllers. It might be shitty if you compare to today's systems, but the Z-targeting was a brilliant solution for that time!

    To fix your issue of starting at your house everytime you started the game, you could’ve just create a save point before quitting the game and then loading the save point when you play again

      Also, there were times where it was faster to reset your game to travel to your house rather than walking all the way back to the Kokiri Forest lol

    z targeting was amazing actualy. For that time there was no z targeting. Of course the system is being polished every since but that is the point: 3D gaming could be divided in before and after z targeting. It changes a lot. Is something you would understand basicly only if you had played only 3D games without z targeting for all your life and then the ocarina. It was a new aproach that made game more cinematographic

    Short answer...yes...it shaped the rest of the series and Is a master class in game design

    Most who have trouble with z-targeting don't know how it works. Souls games use the same targeting system, just adding a free camera with the other stick.

    The answer is:
    If you can tolerate abysmal controls, its worth your time.

    Great Review! I love the save states with NSO, lets us save more often if we are a bit time poor or not as patient as we used to be hahaha. Your right, the Art direction was great and the excellent sound design helps carry it further : )

      Thank you for the kind words :)
      I didn't get much use out of the suspend points myself, but it's cool to know they offer some more flexability over the traditional saving system.

    I got an n64 controller for the switch for z targeting especially. There is nothing wrong with z targeting.

      There most definitely is a number of things wrong with it. But you can’t expect one of the first lock-on systems to get it completely right. One thing right off the bat would be wanting to center the camera if a creature was nearby. Well, you simply couldn’t. However, it did most of what it sought out to do

    When I heard you mention if you were alive in 1998 when the game released your head would have exploded😂😂😂! Well let me tell you. I was alive on that beautiful day. I also had 5 Zelda adventures under my belt. The Hype of Ocarina of time, or Zelda64 as we called it back then, was so strong, for months preceding the release in 1998, we would do daily 100% speedruns on A link to the Past. We would complete the game every day before going to school. Anyway, Ocarina of Time was twice as amazing when the 64 was top of the line. Oh, and Z targeting? Haha! I am a Z targeting master and I loved it! It was actually a great system and one of the gossip stones even mentions that True Zelda Pros set their Z targeting to Hold. That game is a timeless classic and it will forever be in my heart as the best of all time!

    It's so stupid how you can't purchase OOT or other games independently of the expansion pass.

    • @WorthYourTime
      @WorthYourTime  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it's absolutely ridiculous. Especially now with the 3DS Eshop closing. If you don't have a physical copy of the older zelda games (or have already bought them), then you're going to be hard pressed if you want to actually own the games.

      I understand they want to sell the expansion pack but they can at least sell each game individually for like $9.99. I recently bought the expansion pack just to play ocarina and majora. Although I guess it was worth it cuz there are other games that I ended up playing as well..

      Good to hear! We always love when we can get someone to try a new game.
      The screen thing is a bit weird, especially when we're all so used to 16:9 ratio. I will say though, the game does such a good job at sucking you in that you'll quickly forget about it!

    What do you mean botw is better??? Absolutely not! Botw has big problems, it lacks urgency to do anything. You just walk around in a big world and you dont feel the need to do anything.

    Whenever I try to play this game I leave it halfway through, not because I'm bored but because I always forgot I was playing it xD
    As always good review!

      Man I got totally addicted. It took a while for me to get into the groove but damn this game is great.
      Majora's Mask is just as good if not better, and we have some banger games lined up for next week. March is truly spoiling me.

    Great review though I strongly disagree about BOTW being better than OOT.

    • @KIFulgore
      @KIFulgore 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I felt that way too until I started another OOT playthrough a few weeks back for the first time in 20 years. And man... does it feel clunky in combat. Pains me to say it but I'd rather have BotW or TotK over OOT if I had to choose.

    • @sparkzmentalz2
      @sparkzmentalz2 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@KIFulgore Will yeah OOT has outdated mechanics being over 20 years old. Though it's core gameplay loop feels much more cohesive than BOTW/ TOTK. Dungeons are way more fun having to figure the layout and find the map versus unlocking terminals.
