Hey there, here's another person facing this issue. I've been having that for years now on one of my DS4 controllers: using R2 at a certain degree is causing the right analog stick drifting to the left. This video made me think and trying to solve this issue again. As an electrical design engineer i think interference of the low current, low frequency analog signals travelling through the board from the R/L buttons is highly unlikely. But mechanical or connetion issue is more likely. More pressure with the screw underneath the battery did not solve it unfortunately. Then I cleaned main board and plastic board with alcohol and a toothbrush. Also, no chance. I put a piece of paper underneath the plastic board connetor to increase pressure between it and the main board. I think i got a little improvement from that, but no solution so far. Maybe I try to increase pressure further and give that potentiometer cleaning a go. Thanks anyway! It was worth a try! 😊

I've had this issue (L2 and right stick upwards) for quite a while but never bothered with it because it was minor. However I started playing Metal Gear Rising recently and it finally became problematic.
Unfortunately I don't have anything noteworthy to add to the discussion. I opened the controller, cleaned the axis sensors and the circuit board with alcohol (there was some dirt and hair inside), tightened it back as well as it can be. The issue was entirely solved.
Something I noticed when I opened the controller was my L2 button was not properly in place, slightly off its "hook", however this may have simply been caused by me trying to pry it open, as it was quite stiff and had to struggle for a bit.
Cleaning the stick sensors with isopropyl alcohol and qtips fixed it for me, that reset didn't really do anything

Literally just solved the problem here with the help of this video!
In my case, I had drift upwards on the right stick when pressing L2. Had the problem for over a year now, even though I don't use my controller that much, it has about 2 years of very light use.
Decided to try and fix it now. Started trying to clean the L2 contacts 2 times, but to no avail.
After that I decided to try and clean next to the analogs. So I took the main board out, blew it out for any dust and some cat hair. This didn't solve the problem and made it even worse, because I was having upwards drift on the left one now.
At that point I found this video and decided to try.
So what I did was:
- Cleaned all the contacts between the board and the flat cable of the buttons.
- Cleaned both analog vertical axis (I had no glitch on the horizontal axis of none of them, so I decided not to touch them)
- Checked and corrected the alignment of the flat cable with the main board before strewing it in
- Tighten the main board strew as well as I could and checked every corner and alignment piece to be sure
For what I've tested here, the issue is completely gone.
My controller had never been open before, but had some encounters with the floor here and there, so if I where to guess, I'd say it was mostly the cleaning, but the alignment played it's role as well.
And I just made this long-ass comment because it is very hard to find solutions to this problem online, so if that helps the next hopeless soul, I already happy with it.
Thanks. I've come to the conclusion that the alignment between the contacts is a major factor. One person mentioned they can make the problem go away by bending their controller slightly. Xbox controllers are built better in that regard, because they align with a connector, so it can't really get out of alignment.

I think it’s some kind of resistance problem with current. Cars have things like this with after market tail lights can cause tcl to come on due to electrical current back flowing or drawing too much power when activated
My controller does this. I noticed that if I press L2 very lightly it doesn't drift but if I press it harder the drift starts to happen.

I would be curious with what PCB version is being used that has this issue. I've already ran into 3 or 4 different types where some are a little similar. With the PS3 controllers, I have fixed so many of them by simply replacing the rubber foam for the contact pressure. So I'm not really a fan of the contact pressure, but it does make it simple to replace.
that issue happens when I push left trigger and flex the controller slightly but a flex wasn't even needed before I cleaned the inside and placed a thin layer of extra rubber to increase the pressure underneath the screw.
might be the circuit pads not always touching the surface evenly.
I have a very similar problem on my xbox one controller. Whenever I push up or down on the left stick, it causes extreme diagonal outputs from the right stick
Was having the same problem for 2 days a video told me to press l3 and r3 for 60 sec and it fixed it
I screwed the bolts on the back (without opening) as tight as the 4 could go and it didn’t fix it completely but heavily reduced it. Forcing up the analog and blowing air and a brush down down it also fixed it for a few hours. In my case L2 made left analog move left only. Don’t want to know how much I lobotomised the delicate interior with the brush because rubber was coming out but it worked so whatever.
My controller is 6 years old, I had this problem I just blew into the opening of L1 and L2 and it fixed the problem

In my case it was caused by analog drift, cleaning potentiometer helped but from my experience the issue will reappear after a while. If it does I'm going to replace analogs with hall effect ones.

I’m dealing with this issue on two controllers. Red and red camouflage. Both pro model (with the light on the touchpad) and I’m trying to hold off on buying one and avoiding fps games lol

All these problems are mostly related to the incorrect and incomplete connection of the conductive film to the motherboard. It is better to replace the conductive film and when closing the motherboard screw, close the screw so that the film and the motherboard are completely connected. Automatic operation of l2 or r2 by pressing r3 and l3 or vice versa, most of the time, the connection is incomplete because of this, be aware that there is a cloud pad under the part where the film is connected to the motherboard, which also causes the connection to be incomplete. This is my experience after repairing more than 100 Dual Shock 4 devices.
I previously had this issue with my JDM-050 where L2 moves L3 forward and is now fix ever since I swap the plastic film for eXtremeRate clicky button mod but now have a new problem. The face buttons causes L3 to move forward now! I can't win! 😭
I dont know if anyone will see this. but the only thing that helped me was making sure the body or chassis of the controller is tight. mine was slightly loose and caused this issue. so make sure you squeeze the controller tightly and then make sure the screws are tightly fastened aswell
Hello, I have the 040 model. When I press the L2 button, my character walks forward, but when I apply light pressure to the L3 button, it stops the forward walking movement. Anyone who plays the RDR2 game knows that when the L3 button is pressed hard, the character bends down, but when you press it lightly without using that button, the problem disappears. You can clean it and put a small space between it if necessary. I will try to insert a piece of paper. I even changed the key foil for this problem, but the problem seems to be the L3 button. bought a new controller offical from sony as recent as acouple months ago and noticed that when i would attempt to look down with the right stick it would stutter hard making me believe it was debris of some sort so after just using a aircompressor on it that issue was remedyed but now i got this l2 causing drift on my right stick :/
Mines seems to press l2 down when an input is made other than itself, sometimes it behaves but i can never replicate what makes it stop.. It just stops and acts like a normal DS4 controller..

So I am having this problem right now. I haven't played my PS4 in years and I'm very mellow playing with PS5. But I think instead of taking the whole thing apart I'm just going to buy a new one. PS4 controllers are so cheap nowadays I should be able to pick up one for like 10 bucks new.
My DS4 had no drift but it sure is annoying when my character in cover walks into enemy territory as I aim my weapon.
The controller seriously have too many design flaws. The silicone conductive rubber pads breaks too easily after a year of use.
Triggers wear down due to vulnerable plastic hinges. Too many openings for any junk to enter.

I am going to try to fix this when i feel like it since i have fixed many issues with my controller, days ago i had issue with my left joystick not being able to reach fully or go diagonally when i push to North east or north west of the joystick it would flickerfully toe right or jitter, i opened my controller blew into it but never tried to open the potentiometer, it fixed it for while and also got rid of the l2 interfering with the joystick movement but it had came back again after couple days after opening it once again.
I think its also worth to mention that year ago i had an issue with my controller that my Ps home button somehow managed to be switched with my L1 button, everytime id press my ps button it would trigger L1 i tried to fix it but i was inexperienced and i never played again after week of coming back somehow the issue went away and it never came back
Pressing up the circuit membrane solved the issue. All though mine was slightly different. When i was replacing that green thingy, that you need to clean to remove the drift to red one from xbox-360 controller(yeah, i bruteforced it to fit, and it works), after reassembling the controller i found that if i hold L2, moving left stick down-left/right releases L2.
After watching this halway through, i unscrewed the case, opened it, connected to PC via cable and launched x360ce.exe to show output and tried to simulate the problem - hold L2 and move left stick, problem was there. So i tried to press whole controller (from front case to battery holding piece) with right hand and feeling L2 and left stick with left hand, and x360ce showed that all parts work properly. So i unscrewed that screw and screw it back more firm and tight.
I don't know what made me do it (I'm an electronics engineer too it makes it way more funny lmao) but I held my ds4 controller then I hit it with my hand 2 times from the right side of the controller. Now the problem is fixed. XD
The current theory is that the problem is caused by the traces on the button membrane not touching the traces on the board perfectly; misaligned basically. It's likely you knocked them back into place. Someone else said bending their controller made the issue go away.
I just shook my controller a bit and it seems to have fixed it

Yeah it's so weird barely anyone talks about it I mean the issue does exist. I press and hold the L2 button then I move forward my character and the camera pans to the right but when I hold the L2 button and I move the character backwards the camera then pans to the left it's so weird lol.
Sometimes opening the controller will fix the issue so I think it's the conductive film that is causing the issue maybe the connective pads is not being pressed so when you disassemble and assemble the either the issue persist or it goes away. I also cleaned the flaux. The only solution is to open and close the controller and hope the issue goes away.
BTW my controller is jdm-050 so it only has one flap which directly connects to the motherboard (4:59) unlike in this video which has 3 separate flaps (3:47).
Thank you for making this video glad to know that I'm not losing my mind because like I said no one seems to be talking about this specific issue and when you ask which I will never do because you'll just get meme answers like, "wtf are you doing with your controller, stop throwing it around or eating doritos while playing" as if that's gonna fix the issue.

@@pambudibaguswidodo9768 Yes by cleaning the contact pads and then tightening the "motherboard" screw. In my case I think the screw is loose so I added superglue then waited for it to solidify then I tightened it to make sure the board is secured and properly touching the contact pads.

I have this issue with my controller this the drift occurring on the right joy stick. I used the gamepad tester, to try and check, if there is any possible way to fix this issue. In my case when I tried flexing the plastic controller the drift issue completely disappeared. The L2 button normally causes the dead-zone to be above 40, but when pressure is applied to the controller the dead-zone is sub 5. The issue might be related to the contacts not being properly aligned.
This may be the most promising lead I've had regarding this issue. If I understand you correctly, when you say the contacts may not be aligned, I think you mean where the main board touches the end of the flexible membrane. I could see that causing an issue. When you talk about applying pressure, is that with the controller fully put together? If so, which way do you bend it? Like do you hold the handles and act as if you are going to snap it in half.

When I hold L2 it moves my Left stick and that causes my character to move it doesn't happen with teh right stick tho only the left

I just bought a DualShock 4 at a thrift store that seems to have this issue.
I have a similar issue I move the right diagonaly and it moves the left up

I have a JDM 011 board with the same issues: movin g the Left analogue stick forward, registers an L1 button press, and moving the Right analogue to the left, registers an R1 button press, bear in mind, i tested the board out of the shell, just the main board and the charging port connected to my PC with a USB cable, and STILL presented the problem, so its obvious the cause is not a dirty membrane or mislaigned contacts between the main board and this membrane, i meticulously cleaned the main board with a brush and alcohol, 3 times, still no luck, one of these days ill try replacing the green potentiometers on the analogue sticks, ive read a few times people have fixed this issue doing it, so ill report back when ive tried it.

I main tank. Left trigger is block. This is a MASSIVE problem. I hold block and my character will move, drop block, or be unable to roll dodge due to this ridiculous drift. It makes my role unplayable.

The L2 stick just fell off in one of my controllers and nothing was loose and open it just randomly happend and you cant even put it in they way it came out💀
My case is total opposite. For me pushing the analog forward triggers the L2 trigger. How can i fix this??

i stopped using my first ds4 controller because HEAR ME OUT, pressing downward left on the left analog stick causes R2 to be "pressed down".
So any range you move the left stick is ok but when you move it downwards left, you start shoting automatically in fps games or auto accelerating in car games and so on. It´s really annoying but i have and idea for you. I actually damaged the white "band" (sorry i dont know the name nor english is my native language) that goes from the charging usb port to the board. I damaged it after many times of opening for cleaning the joy so i had to cut it shorter for it to be placed again. This caused it to just reach its place, sometimes i would not place it correctly and the RGB lights from the joy would show incorrect colors.
Is this a possible issue? i will try to adjust the pressure on the screw you mentioned first altough im afraid to not be able to put the white band again in position as it is too short now and very difficult to position correctly lol
I think you mean the ribbon. It's possible that it is leaking current into the board.

Hello, i believe i have found the cause of the problem. It is because the potentiometer doesnt make good contact, with the motherboard or inside in the disc. I tried desoldering the potentiometer and placing another one of 100k and it worked well moving the potentiometer and the error of the L2 button disappeared. So im gonna replace with another complete stick and that will solve the problem

Hello everyone.
When i play COD MW3 and when i wanna aim and press the L2 button the right thumb stick goes slightly up. So my ads goes up very slowly. It's very annoying and strange because i don't have problems in other games.
In COD MW3 Settings > Controller > Deadzone Inputs [ Show more ] > You see a stick drift checker build in. And the right thumb button doesn't have any stick drift. But as soon as i slightly press the L2(aim button) you can see the right thumb stick goes up a bit..... Very very strange and annoying.
Could someone tell me what's wrong or how to fix it and if someone experienced this issue as well?

I have the issue with a JDM-055 board and both controllers are showing issues. One controller with a left stick that will not move forward all the way (full forward causes it to skip to center and full forward) and the other controller has a right stick that sends a forwards signal whenever L2 is receiving any sort of input.
I created my own gamepad testing program which shows the controller analogs , there current positions relative to center and max thresholds and progress bars for trigger values. ... kind of rudamentary but it is more than enough to get solid diagnostics on a controller and see what's actually happening in the program side of things.
I ordered a whole new shell and backplate to replace 1 controller and 2 new batteries , charger ports as well as new thumbsticks and PCB thumbstick replacements.

I received 2 of them today that i need to repair. Ill update if i do get it fixed.
I fixed both of them by replacing the potentiometers. The potentiometers was damaged and could not just be cleaned. One did it with the right stick and L2 and the other one was with the left stick both was the JDM-040 boards

My PlayStation controller moves to the left aggressively for no reason so I bought an Xbox. Sony are scam artists I buy a PlayStation and it comes with a controller at aggressively moves to the left for no reason.
Mine was like this but instead it was when I held down r2 my right analog stick would move left
This is what I'm currently experiencing did you manage to find any fixes
The fixes that solved it for me temporarily included- Blowing into the stick and also opening and cleaning it
However these were only for short times with the blow fix only lasting about 4 hours and cleaning about 2 days so I wanna know if there's a permanent fix
