Maybe - Miss Saigon (2014)

- This song replaces 'Now that I've seen her' from the previous Miss Saigon. I don't usually enjoy new songs in revival but this is an exception.
I do not own the song. Just putting up so that everyone can listen to this brilliant piece.
Now That I've Seen Her is such a gut punch of a song where one woman who just met another woman she has only heard about has to deal with a flood of emotions. This song is essentially making Chris a bad guy for having a past that he clearly doesn't want anymore. She needs to talk to him but this song is too Chris-centered and doesn't address this young girl that has just thrust herself into her life at all. Is this more about women not being enemies? Sorry, the show deserves to be more gritty and real like it is designed to be!
This song is soo relatable. not being sure about something makes us ask all these questions that were afraid to find the answer to
She really loved him, didn't she? Ellen was brave enough to let him go if he wanted that. What a level headed character. Breaks my heart every time I hear this song!
Sigh , and we will never know what could have been
Chris never had the chance to see Kim on his own before she made the final decision for everyone
@@anaihilator and that’s part of why it’s so tragic. I don’t agree with the choice she made but at the same time, I understood why she did it.
Help me
Am I fooling myself
If I've already lost you?
Nothing's changed, you're still mine,
We can try to ignore this.
But if she has come back in your life,
Well then maybe, you were never mine.
And yet my heart cries maybe,
It's a trick, it's a lie,
She's just trying to use you
But I looked in her eyes:
It could kill her to lose you,
And maybe, just maybe you need her too.
Back when we met,
You were broken and wild,
And I held you at night,
and I ached when you cried.
But despite what we lacked,
We tried staying on track, no regret, yet,
Maybe it was fate
That suddenly brought her back to you,
And your love was true love,
Before I even knew you,
If the life of your dreams,
Is the life she is giving,
Should I be the one to stop your dream from living?
If you're hers, then be hers,
And forget about me now.
I've been blind for so long,
That perhaps I can see now,
And maybe,
Just maybe,
I'll find the strength I need to set you free now,
I'll be strong, I'll stand firm,
So my tears won't betray me,
But my heart might just break,
If what may be, may be.
Thanks
This song is beautiful! And hits so differently when you thinking about people you miss, although I do also love ‘now that I’ve seen her’ but this song instead makes more sense. Overall we call all agree that this musical is a masterpiece of theatre. Long live Miss Saigon!
I have seen miss saigon and i have cried on this scene so much like i could really feel the pain and selflessness of ellen. God this song is perfect.
This song makes me an emotional wreck (not that none of the other songs in the cast recording don't do that already)
Well poor Ellen loves Chris so much that pain in this song is so strong, how can you not help but get super emotional. I've seen this new production 20 times already. I've never done that to any Broadway show but this one just totally won me over.
I can feel you on that. This production gives dignity on her character. We've seen the side of ellen that makes us believe that letting go also is an option to say "i love you". Even though its very painful.
I am listening to this on nth time. Still crying 😭😭😭😭😭
I'm a Maybe defender, and this is my rationale for it: I think Maybe takes us through the thought process, the journey from denial to acceptance, that Ellen goes through in her head. Now That I've Seen Her is melodically more dramatic and I see (or hear) how it fits in better with the other songs in the show than Maybe does, but I feel like Maybe's lyrics are more nuanced and sorrowful. With Maybe, you also get a stronger feeling that the tragic ending of the show was not a foregone conclusion, and that Ellen was already on the way to coming to terms with Kim's reappearance in Chris' life. That's how I read it, but I understand why so many do prefer Now That I've Seen Her to Maybe.
This song is perfect. Beautifully sung and I'm glad they changed Ellen's song. This perfectly shows she's not the villain in Chris and Kim's lovestory. This really shows she's also a victim here and hurting so bad and willing to set Chris free.. IT'S JUST SO SAD. THIS SONG IS SAD. :((((((((((((((((((((((((
Agreed: the original It's her or me was a bit harsh (making it sound like she would make sure no matter Kim was out. "Now that I've seen her" was same tune with different lyrics but made you feel for Ellen thinking about how the past relationship was no longer in the past and she realized that Kim could be a real threat to her marriage. This one is great showing that she loves Chris but she is not cold towards him or Kim.
What a lovely addition to the musical, id have still kept Now that I've seen her, in and used this as in the scene straight after with Chris, and have her sing it to him so he can see how much she loves him and he could react with "let me tell you the way it was..."
See now that I’ve seen her has the nostalgia but this I think hits the nail more on the head
I have now booken the tickets for Miss Saigon 25th Anniversary Performance at the Vue Cinema in Scunthorpe on Sunday the 16th of October and I will be going to see it with my mum and I am sure that we will both enjoy seeing it
When I first heard this song, I thought it was a great addition to the musical since it shows everyone that Ellen is a victim as well, but after reading comments here which lead me to searching for “Now That I’ve Seen Her”, I totally agree that they shouldn’t have replaced the song. NTISH is a natural respond when you finally see “that girl” then she shouted at your face. Yes, it will make her look slightly bad but it’s normal. She don’t know her story, and her husband is keeping it a secret. Ellen doesn’t need to clear her name with “Maybe”.
On the other note, this song is really good and beautifully sang. I can feel the emotion and the lyrics are so relatable! Love it but not as a replacement for NTISH
Right in the feels 😭
The character of ellen is so strong. He loves chris very much and the song is very relatable even in our times. Would you let him go? Or you will fight for him? Either of the two decisions will be brave enough to do. But the pain is so real.
I saw the show a few days ago, it was amazing. I was actually really impressed with this song, I personally didn't like "now that I've seen her".
This is so beautiful x
So beautiful ❤

I don't think this song is not as good as the previous two songs of which Ellen sang. We all must realize that Ellen is as much as a victim of circumstances. The words on this song brought out that side that wasn't presented clearly in the original production of Miss Saigon.
You're right. I love it!
I think this song means much more than Now That I've Seen Her It's My Favourite Song Of The 2nd Act!!!
Even though this song is pretty much the same 3 note pattern over and over again, I like it & I like the lyrics, but I don't like it for this show, especially after Kim just shows up and screams in her face. Kim's reaction is understandable, but I don't think after an old flame meets you and loses it, your first response is "my husband is meant to be with her" and just resign yourself to despair. In "Now That I've Seen Her" Ellen actually has a backbone and wants to fight for her marriage and talk to her husband to figure out what's going on, all the while still having compassion for Kim, who has obviously been through a lot. It says a lot more, & the tune is more interesting. Besides all the extensive, unnecessary lyrical and musical changes & attempts to make the new version of Miss Saigon grittier, I hate that it gave me the sense that Chris always loved Kim and never loved Ellen. Glad I saw the show live before they changed everything.
I agree. The old song was better. It was more unique and personal and its atmosphere matched the following trio with Chris and John much better. This is just standard over-emotional drivel that could be inserted in almost any musical.
I disagree , it's not weakness on Ellen's part to wonder if Chris belongs with Kim.
The man was horribly damaged and traumatized when they met . And even after they married Chris had recurring nightmares about Kim and clearly her fate haunted him even after 3 years and getting married
Any sane woman not in complete denial would wonder
I "partly agree".
"Even though this song is pretty much the same 3 note pattern over and over again, I like it "
I completely agree on that. Ironically that pattern makes this song very hard to sing and I am sure that in the future we will get many awful versions of that song :)
About the whole "Chris-Ellen-Kim-Drama".
I was like 15 when I saw the show and just like in so many movies I hated it that somehow every one of those three beats him- or herself up and when they talk to one another it is always shallow and gets never past "The heat of the moment."
"First Ellen has to know".
So he told her, that he lived just two weeks with some whore who now has born his child but he forgot to tell her that he promised her to marry her in the USA and that they shared a ceremony he KNEW was kind of a wedding vow? Oh please...
And there are three adults but sitting down TOGETHER and talk about the elephant in the room they all are aware of is impossible even though they have the huge benefit of having Johns help who knows about the options they have better than anyone else?
But musical, Tv and real life have one thing in common:
People aren't pretty often as reasonable as I wish :)
One can love more than just one person, but that creates situations that tend to go really wrong if the involved ones aren't open with each other.
While I understand your view... and I started off that way now I don't agree. This is like the inner processing of a person doesn't know where she fits anymore. It is so powerful... although I don't think this is the best version. I've heard better renditions.

Thanks for explaining.
I know I tend to expect people to act more rational than they can.
Maybe because I am a classical sociopath (don't worry, I have less narcissistic tendency as most people, not a serial killer :) I just lack some "emotional responses" who are common in most people.
Lovesickness and jealousy being two examples.
I a situation like that I could never complain about how "hard" that is for me, Chris or Kim, because that doesn't matter in THAT moment.
In THAT moment all that matters is sending John to get some icecream with Tam and sit down with Chris and Kim because for now none of us is entitled to complain.
WE are the adults here that means OUR job is to work out a solution that ensures that THAT little boy that has already seen things no kid should feels as save and loved as possible.
After that is discussed and only then we adults can find a way to deal with that situation, no one said that would be easy.
Also:
I would never "fight for a marriage".
I confess I never understood that.
Yes I am capable of love and I have a husband I lover very much and as in any relationship we too had here and there problems that needed us both to WORK on ourselves and the partnership to make this marriage work.
But to "fight for a marriage" always seems to me like fighting, wasting energy on something that is already lost.
If I had to fight to keep the one I love with me I (or both of us) obviously missed the point where we had to talk and work things out.
I really like this song better than now that I've seen her.
I kind of like how the melody ebbs and flows, if that makes any sense. Now that i've seen her is great, but i like how the melody is so "rocky" and tumultuous like how Ellen must be feeling at this point, but its a shame the song never mentions how Ellen may feel towards Kim unlike in NTISH. But still its a great replacement
😭😭😭

Could you imagine Julia Murney singing this? goodness gracious
Broke me.
😥
I still think Maybe and Now that I've seen here are equally good. Not terrible, but not awesome.
Does anyone know the singer of this version?
If I am not mistaken, it is Tamsin Carroll
Claire Moore is the original cast of Ellen
Does anybody know what key this is in?
Alice Ellsworth C# minor 👍
I disliked the Ellen character right up until I heard this song...I don't think it was ever anyones fault and you come to understand that more towards the end of the musical, but this song just gets to me, it radiates the emplathy I also feel towards Chris and Kim.
So this is a completely different character and yes it does imply that Ellen and Chris's marriage is a fallacy because this song so clearly wants you to believe kim and Chris are end game (even though this show is decades old and any attempt at a plot twist is fraught), BUT, it is not a bad song. It actually does kind of work on its own for a really interesting character in a strained marriage. But that's not what miss saigon is about.
キアヌ・リーブス😍love❤️
i don't feel this song is any better than the old song, and it isn't a show-stopper
Could you please listen to this song's lyric once more? I personally were shocked when I first heard this. I thought this song represents every part of the character. There are so many wonderful rhymes in it and the best part for me was 'if what maybe may be'.
"Now that I've Seen Her" and "Her or Me" are different than "Maybe" but this is just as beautiful as those two. And what makes this new song incredibly great is how Ellen's heartbreak resonates throughout the song. How, initially, she thought that this girl who was looking for her husband was just after money or whatever but then she meets her for the first time (in Room 317) and realized that, maybe, Chris and Kim deserved to be together. Also do remember that Ellen watched Chris talk in his sleep and shouts Kim's name. THAT is what made her think about the possibility that maybe he was never hers to begin with.
the music is not really grabbing me.
I agree with you
hi Jasmin, I certainly get what you are saying. It is true that the lyrics in the old song were a little clunky and also made Ellen seem a bit hard-hearted. But the song as a whole was musically a showstopper and always got a rousing applause.
this song kinda sounds like Santa Fe from Newsies.
thank you for pointing that out! I thought so to!
Omg yea

The song did not add to the story. It's all speculation that didn't matter. What matters is that Chris chose to start over with her, that he is happy with her. Tham is supposed to stay with Kim, that's it. Original version was better, because it was closest to the actual inspiration for the story. If ever this play needed changing its the choreography, that's it. Stop changing it, the old songs blended better together. We get the idea about Ellen , no further explanation was necessary. It was obvious the melody was nowhere close to the other songs, like a sore thumb.
The song is okay but they shouldn't have replaced the original. There was no need to give Ellen a number to try to make her more relatable - anyone with half a heart would feel for her character anyway. I'm really disappointed the revival didn't include 'Now that I've Seen Her'. 'Maybe' is pretty but does not deliver the same emotional impact.
Fun fact Eva: The original (for the first production in London) was not Now that I’ve Seen Her. The song was the same but the title of the song was the harsher, It’s Her or Me! So that’s two big changes over the years. Seemingly each update has softened Ellen’s approach to the situation.
I agree. The old song was better. It was more personal and its atmosphere matched the following trio with Chris and John much better. This is just standard over-emotional drivel that could be inserted in almost any musical.
あに〜〜〜〜〜だあに〜〜〜〜〜😸✌️
Not a big fan of this song; I personally think it adds an unnecessary frustration to the story. I mean, both "Now that I've seen her" and "Maybe" portray Ellen as one of the war victims whose marriage was threatened by her husband's past...But at least in the old version, it shows that she is willing to fight for her own happiness. In the revival, it feels like she was to give up, basically "whatever will be, will be". At this point, the story is depressing enough, so seeing another character fall spreads the plot way too much. Plus, I find "Maybe" has much less dramatic quality - it makes Ellen inferior to Kim, musically speaking.
I find this really flat. Not the singing just the lyrics. I find it very unrealistic that after meeting Kim she would be considering them being together this much as the lyrics suggest, yes she would definitely do this but I think they really interpreted Ellen wrong for this.
On the surface what you say makes sense but consider the context
Chris was traumatized and broken when he met Helen and he didnt tell her exactly what broke him and why so she probably just chalked it up to war trauma.
Then consider the fact he has recurrent regular nightmares that again, he wont tell her what the source is for them...but she knows he cries out a woman's name in anguish because of them and still refuses to tell her what happened to him in Saigon
Only when he has no choice does he admit he fathered a child with a vietnemese girl but even then he didnt tell her the full extent of what happened between them
So when she meets Kim who is still very much in love with her husband and expects to resume their relationship where it was sundered( and I sundered not ended because they didnt split, they were literally forcefully torn apart)
Well given that context, I dont think Ellen's reaction is that far fetched
Kim meant something to Chris clearly
And Chris meant something to her , the fact she kept their child while her country was literally burning in hell
It's not far fetched
I prefered the original Her or me to Now that I've seen her & definitely this song. I liked hurt & bitchy Ellen better, but then I'm guessing that's why they changed the title & half the lyrics in that song to make the character more likeable/relatable. The lyric is a good for this but the melody's forgettable unlike Her or me/NTISH. It just lacks bite unlike the other songs imo.
Nice tune but sorry, I don't believe this is remotely how women would react in this situation or the language they'd use. "It's Her Or Me" nailed it. This is telenovella. I hate it when composers revisit and tinker with works. It dilutes the integrity of the original, cohesive work.
This song isn't needed, stick with the original song that was in the show
Boring. This new song is such a non-event. The multiple earlier inceptions were more exciting to listen too. Cant we fall in love w both Kim AND Ellen?
This song is dumb. Bring back the original song. The whole show is about "the power of the Image": everyone has an image of how things will be, and are confronted with the realities of the world when their image is shattered. This is why the "I want it song" is Movie in my Mind. All the main characters had a song about the the powerful images they have, or the aftermath when when what they've imagined is not the reality: movie in my mind, sun and moon, why God why, American dream, now that I've seen her, Bui Doi. But now this song sticks out like a sore thumb and does not fit. Ditch it and keep the original
