DIY E-Bike Stealth Camping

  • I picked up an electric bike conversion kit on amazon and slapped it on an old mountain bike with a trailer to try it out for stealth camping. There was a little rain, a few mishaps, but a bad day camping is better than a good day at work. Big potential for stealth camping transportation to get into the camping spots I can't access with a vehicle.
The e-bike conversion kit is a Ebikeling model from amazon, I wouldn't recommend picking one up at this point due to my initial results. Hoping to work out the bugs.

One of the features of LifePo4 batteries is that they have a very flat discharge curve. They maintain a constant voltage through about 90% of their capacity and then drop off very sharply. For this reason, you usually have to measure consumption via monitoring current through a shunt rather than monitoring voltage. I expect your batteries will be fine, they'll have an internal BMS which will have shut off the power before you over discharged them.

Steve, your front forks will probably fail before your trailer does. Take my advice and exchange that front hub motor with a mid or rear wheel kit. The forks aren't designed to handle the torque of that motor. A mid drive also allows you to use the gears for climbing steep hills.

My dad was a US Air Force 130 pilot and in the seventies when I was two years old we spent a couple of years in Edmonton, Alberta on an exchange tour with the Canadian Air Force. Hub drive has one issue you must address. Because of the torque the spokes loosen. After each trip give them an inspection. On the trailer, with all the weight, do the same. Lift the wheel, lay your fingers inside the spokes close to the axle and then with your fingers move the rim back and forth. You'll feel it if the spoke nipples are loose.

Also, make sure you have zip ties and practice using them to true a wheel with junk wheels ahead of time. You can look it up, but you wrap it around a fork leg and cut the ends to a point and set the tip just touching the rim. You do need to learn which spoke to tighten to pull the rim the direction you want, but never loosen if you screw up. If you check it daily at least, they shouldn't get too out of wack to fix. As a back up to the back up, zip ties shouldn't be the primary tool, a brake pad can be rigged to do the same with less precision. Oh also, brake disks should be checked! They can be straightened with channel locks and you can use the zip ties to check. I am a wheel builder.

Interesting video Steve, as always! I have watched a lot of videos concerning travel trailer LiFePO4 battery conversions. One thing that they always include is NOT a voltage meter, but a state of charge/battery monitor meter. Something like the RBM500-CA from Renology. When you charge them up, it shows how many Amp hours are left available, instead of volts. As some of other comments have said, LiFePO4 batteries can show 100% and then 0% with no in between. If you get yourself a BMS, and that battery monitor, you should have a more accurate view of what you have left. The BMS will allow all batteries to charge equally so they all have the same charge. Cheers!

I have been watching your video's for a few years now and am a BIG fan, love them all!
In the last year I have learned loads about LiFe PO4 batteries in trying to equip my little RV correctly. While I could be wrong, I think you ran into a couple of the more complex issues I have learned about these batteries:
    A) LiFe PO4 batteries have a different discharge profile then the older LeadAcid/AGM/Gel batteries. LeadAcid/AGM/Gel batteries will slowly loose voltage allow you to easily check the output voltage to figure out the state of charge. On the other hand, LiFe PO4 batteries hold their voltage really well and drop so little it is hard to tell what the state of charge is. I have shunt in my RV that is designed to be calibrated to the battery bank and actually counts the current used to determine the actual state of charge and is accurate to about 1%.
I know you like to operate with less expensive equipment (which I think is great), but I don't know how accurate that reading was you gave us as you left the camp. I am wondering if maybe the battery was actually a lot lower than you realized...
But there is another issue, which I think might have been a bigger cause for things not working out:
    B) LiFe PO4 batteries in series
While LiFe PO4 batteries can be put in parallel to increase the current, most cannot be wired series to up the voltage. The reason is about balancing the batteries correctly. Inside a 12v LiFe PO4 battery there are four individual cells AND a Battery Management System (BMS). The BMS monitors the voltage across the four cells to keep them consistent. I don't know exactly how it does that, but I know it is really important. I know of one company that sells 12v LiFe PO4 batteries which CAN be run in series. They are very expensive batteries in general and when run in series REQUIRE an external BMS to keep all the different v12 balanced. I am sure they have BMS's inside too. I don't know, but guess somehow (more then likely via Bluetooth or something) the external BMS is able to communicate with the internal BMS so the whole battery system acts as one big BMS. All in all, a very expensive setup. I think each of their 12v 100Ah batteries is around 1000 USD, so I am thinking a 2000 USD eBike and an extra battery or two might be the cheaper chicken ;)

As a DIY e-bike builder I can assume what went wrong. The bikes display / controller probably doesn't have a setting for LiFePo4 chemistry batteries. Setting it to 36v probably 'tells it' that you have 10 LiIon cells (10x3.7v) which is fully charged at 10x4.2v (42v). Each of Steve's 12v LiFe is 4s, so he's got 12s LiFe, which is 3.2 nominal, and 3.6 fully charged. Fully charged (43.2v) is very close to the 10s LiIon (42v) setting. The issue is that LiFe has an extremely flat discharge curve. LiIon has a slight, but gradual decline in voltage during discharge. This could keep the display reading abnormally high. The ebike display is expecting the gradual reduction in voltage in order to display an accurate battery percent, in addition to being set to the wrong style battery.
Setting the display back to 24v (probably of a LiIon chemistry still) temporarily works around the problem.
That being said, 36v at 100ah (3.6kwh) is a lot. I've got a (non trailer) DIY e-bike that has 52v (14s LiIon) at 34ah for about 1.8 kwh and can get 80 km riding at 40-50 km/h, or probably 120km at a moderate 30-40 km/h. That was the most amount of 21700 cells I could fit in the triangle of the bike.

@@campingwithsteve LiFePO cells also normally read lower than Li-ion - 3.2v per cell vs 3.7v per cell (nominal, not full charge). There may be something kooky in how the eBike controller is reading those voltages. But still, I saw the meter at the start there reading 100% charge, when you'd think it'd read 90-something percent if that were the difference. Look forward to the result on this one, that's interesting.

Although I'll warn that you're likely going to run into issues with this setup because they're LFP batteries... Nearly all e-Bike battery controllers expect to be using NMC or NCA chemistry cells. Nickel based cells have a much higher nominal voltage (3.6-7v vs 3.2) and have a very different voltage curve. You may find yourself in a sudden power loss scenario. Just something to keep in mind.
(Edit) I should learn to not comment before watching the end LOL.
Honestly, I you'll probably need to bite the bullet and purchase a normal 36V e-Bike battery. Most commonly you'd mount one on a sled in the middle of the bike. It just sucks because battery prices have risen significantly..
